Hidden Account Numbers Worth $50 Each month, OEC will pay $50 to the two co-op members who locate their hidden account numbers inside the Co-op News that month. The hidden account numbers will be placed at random within the text of each issue and not on the mailing label. The amounts will simultaneously increase in $50 increments until one or both account numbers are located by their respective owners or until the maximum of $500 is reached. 1. One of the hidden account numbers must be your own. 2. You must advise OEC by phone, mail or in person at the co-op’s office by the 15th of the month. If you find your account number call the Member Relations department at 217-6708.

FROM the

TOP Patrick Grace, CEO

It’s the season of giving, and OEC employees are out in full force making a difference in the communities we call home. Co-ops are, at their hearts, community-focused organizations. After all, co-ops were founded to satisfy the unmet needs and aspirations of the members we serve. That’s why Concern for Community is one of the seven cooperative principles and one we prioritize at all times of the year, but especially during the holidays. We take part in the Salvation Army Red Kettle campaign, the Citizens Advisory Board Secret Santa program and so many other community holiday events that ensure our neighbors and friends have a great holiday season. You might even see OEC employees working at local nonprofit organizations in your area as part of our Empowers program, which encourages employees to give their time to those who need it the most. Look for us Dec. 14 in the Norman Christmas Parade and in the Blanchard parade as we accompany our Live Line high voltage demo decked in lights down Main Street. We enjoy taking part in countless holiday programs that spread holiday cheer and foster the bringing together of our communities. Our OEC Foundation Operation Round Up program supports many of the nonprofit agencies across our service area as they prepare holiday meals and gifts as a way to expand our reach throughout all seven counties in our system. You can read about how Operation Round Up is making a difference each month on page 4 and at www. okcoop.org/ORU. There's a lot to look forward to in 2020, including the continued efforts to bring fiber internet and broadband to your homes. But first, from all of us at OEC, have a happy holiday season and a very Merry Christmas.

GoodRx replacing Co-op Connections Card beginning Jan. 1

A

s of Jan. 1, the Co-op Connections Card you may be using for discounts at the pharmacy will no longer work. Instead, we encourage you to use the free-to-use GoodRx card, which can be requested at goodrx.com, or mobile app to continue receiving discounts on prescriptions. OEC will not be mailing cards to members. Those interested must request a card at goodrx.com or download the GoodRx mobile app. "The GoodRx program offers our members the same discounts as the Co-op Connections Card," said Autumn McMahon, manager of marketing and member relations. "An intuitive, user-friendly app can be used in place of a physical card so you can get your discounts simply by showing your smartphone at the pharmacy." GoodRx is a free price comparison tool that helps Americans save millions of dollars every month by finding them the lowest prescription prices at their local pharmacies. No registration or sign-up needed. GoodRx is accepted at over 70,000 retail pharmacies in the United States — including major chains like CVS, Walgreens, Costco, Walmart and more! Remember, if you would like a physical card to show at the pharmacy rather than the mobile app, please visit goodrx.com. As this is not an OEC program, please contact 1-844-329-3341 if you have any questions. WFEC GENERATION REPORT

AB

en OEC employees recently completed the Employee Development and Leadership Program (EDLP) — the fourth class of employees to do so. EDLP — championed by OEC's board of trustees since its creation in 2014 — is intended to expand employees' working knowledge of all facets of the co-op, not just the areas in which they work on a daily basis, all in an effort to better serve our members. [7005328800] Spanning two years, the program consisted of classroom courses, the reading of leadership and development books, job shadowing, volunteer work, touring other cooperatives, presenting to their peers and more. "I'm proud to see another dedicated group of employees not only finish this program, but help shape what it has become," said CEO Patrick Grace, whose vision for the cooperative led to the program's creation. Ninety-two of OEC's 160 employees have either completed the program or are in the process of completing it.

Western Farmers Electric Cooperative (WFEC), OEC's wholesale generation and transmission power provider, has an impressive renewable portfolio that includes wind, hydro and — recently added — solar. OEC's Solar Garden, located at Interstate 35 and Highway 77 in Norman, began producing power in February 2017, and Tuttle's 40-acre Solar Farm began operation in March 2017. As more solar facilities come online, expect to see it added to WFEC's generation report, increasing the already robust mix of renewable energy sources.

Data collected from Western Farmers Electric Cooperative reflects generation and Southwest Power Pool purchases during September 2019.

To view real-time generation output and environmental benefits of OEC's Solar Garden, visit www.okcoop.org/solar. 2019 Employee Development & Leadership Program graduates, left to right, Jeanie Lee, Matt Caldwell, Jimmie Turnpaugh, Teddy Whitehead, Casey Davis, Dustin Kirk, Shain Brown and Nelson Amaeze. CO-OP NEWS

Co-op News, communications awarded in statewide contest

T

he Co-op News member magazine, Quarterly Plug employee magazine and other member communications pieces won multiple statewide awards in the 2019 Oklahoma Communications Contest, hosted by Oklahoma Living magazine. Judges recognized OEC for Best Internal Newsletter, Best Creative Communications Piece, Best Marketing Campaign and Best Feature Story for the May 2019 story titled Local Artist, OEC Member Selected to Illustrate New Children's Book by Meredith Rasnic. A photo of OEC employee Brad Scott congratulating a Special Olympics athlete claimed the top award for Best Photo, and the Co-op News won the Award of Merit for Best Overall Content. The marketing and member relations team behind the work consists of Manager of Marketing — AUTUMN and Member Relations Autumn McMahon, Education and Outreach Programs Director Tory Tedder-Loffland, Editor and Creative Director Brianna Wall, Energy Efficiency Solutions Specialist Daniel Lofland and Key Accounts Specialist Tim Ferree. OEC's communications materials have also

been awarded at the national level. Most recently, the employee magazine, Quarterly Plug, won first place in the Employee Publication category for the fourth year in a row. The brochure mailed to new co-op members also won a first place award in the same national contest. "I continue to be impressed by what our team of seven is able to accomplish," said Wall. "Personally, I find tremendous value in communicating OEC's mission and cooperative difference to our thousands of members while providing them with relevant information so they can make informed decisions about their energy use." [1131100202] CEO Patrick Grace echoed the sentiments. "I couldn’t be more proud of the MMR team, and the board [of trustees] feels the same way," MCMAHON said Grace. "We always strive to provide the best service we can, and the MMR team delivers this exceptional member service by keeping the members informed and educated… and by being our members' trusted energy advisors."

"While our team might be the one that gets the credit, it's truly a co-op-wide effort to ensure our members are kept wellinformed."

RENEWABLE ENERGY

NORMAN PUBLIC SCHOOLS, OEC PARTNER TO DEVELOP RENEWABLE ENERGY FARM 12

Oklahoma Electric Co-op News • December 2019

“At OEC, our purpose is to improve our members’ quality of life through innovative energy programs and exceptional member service. This collaboration allows us to do both.”

A new solar farm is coming to Norman, thanks to a partnership between Oklahoma Electric Cooperative and the Norman Public School District. The Norman Board of Education on Nov. 18 approved an agreement to lease district-owned land to OEC to develop the solar farm, which will reduce the school district’s energy costs and provide educational opportunities for students. Construction on the solar farm will begin soon and conclude by the end of 2020. When complete, the 15-acre, 2 megawatt solar farm is expected to generate the equivalent of nearly 30 percent of the school district’s total energy usage. “We are fortunate to have so many incredible partners in Norman,” said Dr. Nick Migliorino, superintendent of Norman Public Schools. “We appreciate OEC and their desire to help us further reduce energy costs, which allows us to invest more resources in our classrooms.” The partnership also features a Renewable Science Education Center, where students can visit the solar farm and learn about electricity, energy and careers in related fields. The project aligns with the City of Norman’s Ready for 100 initiative, which calls for the city to be fueled 100 percent by renewable energy by 2030. “We are proud to partner with Norman Public Schools to expand access to renewable, solar energy,” said Patrick Grace, CEO of Oklahoma Electric Cooperative. “At OEC, our purpose is to improve our members’ quality of life through innovative energy programs, and exceptional member service. This collaboration allows us to do both.” The solar farm will be located at 60th and Robinson in Norman and will feature 7,208 panels. The property is owned by Norman Public Schools and OEC will lease a portion of the land to construct the solar farm and an associated road to the facility. The Norman Public School District already has made significant strides toward energy conservation with technology upgrades, lighting changes and awareness campaigns. Since the inception of the district’s energy conservation program, Norman Public Schools have realized a cost avoidance of more than $2.8 million. The new solar farm will add to OEC's already-robust platform of forward-thinking energy solutions for our members and the many communities we serve.

CHEESE BALL BITES  8 slices bacon  1 1/2 oz. (8-oz.) blocks cream cheese, softened  1 c. shredded cheddar  1 tsp. garlic powder  1 tsp. paprika

Kosher salt  Freshly ground black pepper  1/3 c. freshly chopped chives  1/3 c. finely chopped pecans  18 pretzels sticks

In a large nonstick skillet, cook bacon until crispy, 8 minutes. Drain on a paper towel-lined plate, then finely chop. Set aside. Meanwhile, in a large bowl, stir together cream cheese, cheddar cheese, garlic powder, and paprika and season with salt and pepper. Use a cookie scoop to form mixture into 18 small balls and transfer to a parchment–lined baking sheet. Refrigerate until firm, 1 hour. In a shallow bowl, stir together bacon, chives, and pecans. Roll balls in bacon-chive-pecan mixture, insert a pretzel stick into each, and let come to room temperature 15 minutes before serving. (If not serving right away, loosely cover with plastic wrap and return to fridge.) Recipe from Lindsey Funston at delish.com
