Have you ever heard or seen a business telling you to use less of what it sells? It doesn't make much sense for the business, does it? How can it survive if it isn't moving product? To the majority of businesses, the bottom line is all that matters — typical of businesses out to make a profit. The human factor is not considered by those decision-makers when they're trying to sell products or services for profit. The good news? OEC and other cooperatives like us are not out to make a profit, and we do encourage you to use less of what we sell. We're in the business of service, not profits, and we've created a few ways you can take advantage of it in the new year. On pages 6 and 7 you will learn about our expanded efficiency rebate program and ways we are rewarding those implementing new technologies in their energy-saving efforts. Why do we encourage our member-consumers to use less of what we sell? One reason is because we simply distribute the electricity you need to your home. We don't generate it. Factors do come into play that depend more on when you use the power versus how much you use. For example, the amount of power you use on those hot summer afternoons could determine what we pay for that power year-round. That means our goal is to shift that use from hot summer afternoons to mornings, evenings or nighttime to keep your rates affordable. All that to say we work for you, our member-consumers. To myself and the board of trustees, how we provide the service is more important than how much we provide. We genuinely want you to save money on your electric bill, and as we get closer to summer, you will see more and more ways you can save. Remember, OEC is different. We're in the business of service, and we're committed to providing you with the best.

ob Rogers, Thom Prince, Randy Harnsberger and James Long hung up their hard hats in January after a combined 137 years of service to OEC. "Retirements have been a trend here for a few years now, as those who began in the hiring boom of the 80s are moving into the next stages of their lives," said CEO Patrick Grace. "It's hard to watch that much experience leave us, and we wish them all the best." Bob Rogers, manager of information technology services, retired after 33 years. He started in 1985 as an apprentice lineman and was manager of IT services for five years. "Bob's knowledge of our IT systems allowed us to expand our cybersecurity efforts and positioned us well moving forward," said Jonna Buck, vice president of administration. "He will be missed." Thom Prince, hired in 1982 as a groudman, retired Jan. 3 after 13 years as OEC's locator technician. "From years of installing underground then transitioning to locating OEC’s underground we will miss Thom’s knowledge of our underground system," said Vice President of Operations Marty Hayes. Longtime Key Accounts Manager Randy Harnsberger spent 10 years tasked with commercial account billing and relationship management. He joined OEC in 1985 as a laborer, spent some time in the U.S. Marines, and retired Jan. 18 after a 33-year career. "Randy’s vast knowledge of rates and the relationships he has developed over 33 years has played a vital role in the success that OEC has had with our large commercial members," said CFO Preston O'Brien. James Long bids farewell to OEC following 35 years — 15 of those years spent as the manager of loss control. He began his career as an apprentice lineman in 1983 and worked to become one of the key parts of OEC's culture of safety. "OEC is a great place to work and that all starts with a culture of safety that James implemented," said CEO Patrick Grace. "His impact cannot be overstated."

Western Farmers Electric Cooperative (WFEC), OEC's wholesale generation and transmission power provider, has an impressive renewable portfolio that includes wind, hydro and — recently added — solar. OEC's Solar Garden, located at Interstate 35 and Highway 77 in Norman, began producing power in February 2017, and Tuttle's 40-acre Solar Farm began operation in March 2017. As more solar facilities come online, expect to see it added to WFEC's generation report, increasing the already robust mix of renewable energy sources.

Data collected from Western Farmers Electric Cooperative reflects generation during November 2018.

OEC rebate program encourages practical efficiency steps for all members By Brianna Wall | Editor & Creative Director

OEC's board of trustees approved a new and improved rebate program for 2019 that has a little something for everyone who wants to make their homes more energy efficient. From programmable thermostats to heat pumps, we’re offering members an array of rebates that will help lessen the burden of sometimes costly retrofit work.

NEW ADDITIONS TO THE REBATE PROGRAM “One of the most beneficial steps you can take to making your home more energy efficient is installing a programmable thermostat,” said Energy Efficiency Solutions Specialist Daniel Lofland. “One that has the ability to set schedules for your HVAC equipment will help save a lot of money in the long run.” Members who upgrade to a programmable thermostat after Jan. 1, 2019 are eligible for a rebate up to $50 (receipt required, limit two per household). In many cases, that covers the entire cost of the thermostat. “As we approach summer, you will hear us talk more about how a programmable thermostat can make a huge impact on your energy bills, especially if there is no one home during the day,” said Lofland. You have likely heard us talk about water heater timers, as well. Water heater timers purchased and installed after Jan. 1, 2019 that are programmed to turn off from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. during OEC’s Peak Power months (June 1 to Aug. 31) are eligible for up to a $50 rebate (receipt required, limit two per household). Upon completion of a successful pilot period in 2018, members with electric vehicles (EV) may also take advantage of our newly-restructured rebate program. Members who own an EV and have a level 2 charging station installed are eligible for a $200 rebate. “The level 2 charging station must be scheduled to charge the EV between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.,” said Lofland. “Scheduling to charge during these times helps ensure that our rates continue to stay affordable.”

REBATES FOR NEW CONSTRUCTION, GAS-TO-ELECTRIC CONVERSION Members who are building new homes or are looking to convert from gas to all-electric, this one is for you. If your newly-constructed home is complete on or after Jan. 1 and meets four criteria, you are eligible for a $500 rebate.

6

Oklahoma Electric Co-op News • February 2019

The criteria include: • • • •

Minimum 15 SEER heat pump Electric water heater At least 85 percent LED lighting Home must meet state minimum energy code

Members must have a copy of the AHRI (Air-Conditioning, Heating & Refrigeration Institute) certificate to qualify. This information should be provided by your heat pump installer, or visit www.AHRIdirectory.org for more information. If you are only looking to convert an appliance or two from gas to electric, we have you covered, too. Conversion of a gas water heater qualifies members for a $300 rebate, and conversion of gas heat or furnace to a heat pump qualifies members for a $500 rebate. Is your heating system electric resistance? If so, it is terribly inefficient and can be a main cause of high winter bills. In light of that, we now offer a $400 rebate for conversion from electric resistance heat (heat strips) to a qualifying heat pump. Keep in mind that simply upgrading a current heat pump to a new one does not qualify for a rebate. Speaking of heat pumps, continued research shows geothermal is the way to go for folks looking to make the most savings on their energy use. Members who upgrade to a geothermal heat pump from an air-source heat pump or gas furnace — or new construction that includes geothermal — are eligible for a $500 per ton rebate (five ton cap). To qualify, equipment must be AHRI certified (certificate required) and members must present the invoice from the installation company.

WHY THE CHANGES TO THE REBATE PROGRAM? The updates to OEC’s rebate program come after careful monitoring of new technologies and research on what is best for our members. They encourage members of all kinds to take control of their energy use and help lower costs across the board. “Our electric rates are determined by a few of the hottest days in the summer, at specific times of those days,” said Lofland. “If, during those times of days, we can help our members curb their energy use to avoid everyone’s appliances operating at full capacity, our rates will continue to stay affordable.” Visit www.okcoop.org/rebates or contact Daniel Lofland at daniel.lofland@okcoop.org for more information.

VISIT WWW.OKCOOP.ORG/REBATES FOR ALL THE INFORMATION REGARDING EFFICIENCY REBATES.

In case you missed it: Summer rate decrease, service availability charge took effect Jan. 1 As we announced in the December 2018 edition of the Co-op News, the service availability charge increased from 83¢ to 90¢ per day — or $27 on a 30-day electric — effective with January bills. In order to keep the rate adjustment from being a rate increase, an area of OEC’s residential rate was reduced. During the summer months, the on-peak and off-peak energy charges will decrease from 25.6688¢ to 24¢ and 10.2688¢ to 9.8688¢ per kWh, respectively. On-peak rates occur on weekdays from June 1 to Aug. 31 from 3 to 7 p.m. Energy used during off-peak hours on June bills will continue to reflect the shoulder rate cost of 11.5252¢ per kWh, while off-peak electricity use on July, August and September statements will be billed at the new summer off-peak rate of 9.8688¢ per kWh. The small commercial rate is set to change slightly, as well. Check www.okcoop.org/rates for details.

Scholarship opportunities announced for former Youth Tour winners, future engineers

T

he National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) announced two scholarship opportunities for former Youth Tour winners and students pursuing careers in the rural engineering field. "This will be the sixth year the Youth Tour Alumni scholarships are offered, which includes one $10,000 winner and four additional $1,000 winners," said OEC Education and Outreach Programs Director Tory Tedder-Loffland. "In 2015, a 2012 OEC Youth Tour winner, Hayden Hefner from Bridge Creek, won the $10,000 scholarship! We know we have youth in our area more than capable of winning these scholarships."

YOUTH TOUR ALUMNI SCHOLARSHIPS The Glenn English Youth Tour Alumni Scholarship committee is proud to have awarded over almost $100,000 to Youth Tour alumni since starting the program in 2014. To be eligible, applicants must — among other criteria — be a U.S. citizen, have participated in Youth Tour and be working on completing his/her first undergraduate degree.

NEXT GENERATION RURAL ENGINEERING SCHOLARSHIPS The interest and success of the Youth Tour Alumni scholarship inspired the Glenn English Scholarship Committee to partner with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Rural Electric Power Conference (IEEE-REPC) to add an additional opportunity: The Next Generation Rural Engineering Scholarship. Each year, the committee awards two $2,000 scholarships to college students seeking a career in the rural electric engineering fields. Applicants of the Next Generation Rural Engineering Scholarship are not required to be former Youth Tour participants. Application portals are open for both scholarships. Links can be found at www.okcoop. org/scholarships. Both application deadlines are April 1. Winners will be selected and notified in mid-July. Visit www.okcoop.org/scholarships for complete lists of eligibility requirements and application instructions.

OEC members putting scholarship dollars to good use

W

By Meredith Rasnic | hen Heidi Fish and her husband, Lyndel, arrived to the Lloyd Noble Center for Marketing & Member OEC’s Annual Meeting last August, she was unsure of what to expect and certainly Relations Intern didn’t expect to go home with a cash scholarship. “Lyndel told me he saw that OEC was having a meeting and dinner and thought we should go and see what they had to say,” Fish said. Upon their arrival, Lyndel noticed a table where members could enter to win one of three $1,000 scholarships and he wrote down Heidi’s name. “A little while later we were sitting down in the stands and they said they were going to announce the scholarship winners. I never win anything like that so it was a big surprise to hear my name called first!” Fish exclaimed. “I was so excited!” Fish is currently a full-time student at the University of Central Oklahoma where she is earning a Bachelor’s degree in organizational leadership studies while also working at Alliance Health Midwest where she deciphers Medicare regulations. “I am already a part of the healthcare field and plan to stay in it but am looking forward to putting the skills and tools I am learning in class into practice,” Fish said. "My classes have provided me with informative and practical leadership training, as well as technical training. "It is invigorating to learn how to further develop and encourage my co-workers," she continued. "These days, much of my job revolves I am excited for the opportunity around technology and new tools. I joke that I can barely Skype and so I have definitely had to adapt to model for [my older children] that and acquire some more advanced technology it’s never too late to learn something skills.” Fish says that as the medical field is changing, new and put my philosophy of being she is excited for the challenge of keeping up a life-long learner into action for and finds it rather fun! Her degree from UCO is allowing her to not only keep up with changing them to see." trends, but excel in her field. “I want to thank OEC for providing me with — Linda Mattheson, 2018 Luck of the Draw this scholarship," Fish said. my school out of pocket and it is definitely an added expense. I really do appreciate all OEC has done for us over the years and this is another example of ways they serve their members well." The second scholarship winner, Linda Matthesen, was equally as surprised and excited when her name was called. “I have always been an advocate of life-long learning, simply because I love to learn and never want to stop pursuing growth,” Matthesen said. “I have been planning to return to school and this is the perfect time, especially now that I have been awarded a scholarship from OEC.” Matthesen plans to begin classes in medical coding at the Moore-Norman Technology Center. She currently works independently in structural design from home. “I have a bachelor’s degree in math from the University of Oklahoma and in recent years, have taken some steps back to be more accessible to my children and family,” she said. “My children are older now and I am excited for the opportunity to model for them that it’s never too late to learn something new and put my philosophy of being a life-long learner into action for them to see.” [7602100115] Matthesen is currently working to become certified in medical coding and, after taking a test, will be able to receive her full certification. “Medical coding is becoming more popular and more necessary and it is exciting to me that I get to branch out of the area I have been working in to take on a new task." As a cooperative, and according to the cooperative principles, it is OEC’s mission to improve our members' quality of life through the safe delivery of highly reliable, reasonably priced electric service, innovative energy programs and exceptional member service. The Luck of the Draw scholarships are just another way we equip and empower our member-consumers with the tools they need to be successful in life. Cooperatives work to provide education — or funds for education — to our members. We are so excited for both Heidi and Linda and wish them the best of luck in their upcoming endeavors.

EASY COOKIE BAR 1 pouch sugar cookie mix 6.25 oz 1/4 cup butter, softened

Preheat oven to 350 and line a square 8×8 baking pan with aluminum foil. Spray foil with nonstick cooking spray and set aside. Add cookie mix to a mixing bowl and stir in butter and egg. Mixture may be stiff. Stir in half of the candies. Spread into prepared pan and press firmly. Pro tip: Put your hand in the inside of a plastic sandwich bag and then spray the bag with nonstick cooking spray. That's how you easily flatten the dough into the pan. Sprinkle with remaining candies. Bake for 14 minutes or until edges are brown. Remove from oven and cool completely before cutting into 16 squares. Recipe and photo courtesy of Jen at A Magical Mess
