CEO ADDRESS

A year ago at this time, everything revolved around the pandemic, and the decisions we made were based on how we could protect our employees and our members. A year later, we're still faced with these decisions — although not in the same light — as we transition into the heart of summer. One decision we had to make a few months back was to postpone our Annual Meeting to 2022. We tried to avoid it, but at the time, state and local officials were still advising against large gatherings. Our board decided it would be best to wait one more year so we can all join together with hopefully no limitations. One thing I am looking forward to relaunching is our safety meetings. Safety is our top priority, and while our linemen and service personnel have continued their safety training throughout the pandemic, it's more impactful when we can meet in person. At the end of every day, we want each of our lineworkers to go home to their families, and I'm happy to be able to reinforce those safety measures in person again. As we adjusted to working remotely and ensuring social distance measures for all, we kept almost full operations and were able to serve members without experiencing a drop in service or reliability. Kudos to our employees who adapted to a historic time. We knew we had to answer the call, no matter the weather or world pandemic status — we’re here to take care of our members. When we realized America was headed for remote learning and working from home, OEC Fiber kicked into high gear. We hit 1,000 new subscribers per month throughout the pandemic as the need for connectivity became amplified. We pushed forward knowing the service was vital to our members and connected over 10,000 members in 2020. At the end of the day, we want you to know we always keep your needs at the forefront of our decision making. We truly do value you — our members and subscribers — and are grateful for the patience you extended to us as we navigated the pandemic and continue in a new norm with you.

LIVELINE

Bring OEC's high voltage demo to your school or business Electrical safety is top priority for OEC employees and top priority for our educational programs. Live Line high voltage lessons are catered to every age group from elementary to professional groups like first responders. We train fire and police departments as well as all ages of school groups on how electricity works concentrating on safety, how fuses work, voltage,

and the basics of power line design. We present safe electricity practices with a fully functional and interactive trailer — complete with energy arcs, a hot dog demonstration, and engaging content. All requests are pending weather conditions as inclement weather (and the restoration of power) must take precedent. Please allow a three-week lead on all requests.

BEWARE of SCAMMERS

Don't fall victim to utility scams By Abby Berry Every day, millions of Americans are targeted by scammers through phone calls, emails, text messages, online or in person. Scammers’ tactics can change daily, which is why it’s important for consumers to stay on top of the latest scam reports from local and national news outlets, as well as your local utility companies. Remember, OEC will never call you and demand immediate payment without notice. We want you to be aware of two trending scam tactics. One is the overpayment trick, where a scammer contacts you and claims that you have overpaid your utility bill. The scammer will say they need your personal banking information to deposit the credit back to your checking account. Don’t fall for this scam! If you make an overpayment on your energy bill, OEC will automatically apply the credit to your account, which will carry over to your next billing cycle. Another trending scam is smishing (short for SMS phishing). Many consumers know to watch out for suspicious emails, but we tend to trust text messages sent to our smartphones. Always question suspicious texts, especially from someone claiming to represent a utility. We will only send you important updates via text if you’ve opted into text messaging via your My OEC account.

These are just a couple examples of trending scams, so it’s important to watch for any red flags. Here are a few reminders on how to take control of the situation when you’ve been targeted by a scammer: • Take your time. Utility scammers try to create a sense of urgency so that you’ll act fast and hand over personal information, especially over the phone. Take a moment to think about the situation before acting. • Be suspicious. Scammers typically request immediate payments through prepaid debit cards or third-party apps. Unusual requests like this should raise red flags. Remember, if the request seems strange and out of the ordinary, you’re likely being targeted by a scammer. • Confirm before you act. If you’re contacted by someone claiming to represent OEC or another utility but you’re unsure, just hang up the phone and call the utility directly. You can reach us at 405-321-2024 to verify the situation. [8231300101] Our increasingly connected world provides scammers with more opportunities to connect with unsuspecting consumers. Be vigilant, and please report any utility scams to us so we can let others in our community know. Together, we can help prevent our friends and neighbors from being victimized.

WELCOME CHANGE OF PACE Better internet makes transition from office to home a stress-free solution

From the beginning, OEC Fiber has talked about our mission to improve the lives of rural Oklahomans. We’ve talked about the impact our speed and reliability has had on our service area. But what do the people using the service say? They are your friends and neighbors. The woman in front of you in line for a morning cup of coffee. Your next-door neighbor mowing their lawn early on a Saturday morning. These are the people whose lives have been changed through the addition of OEC Fiber. We recently reached out to subscribers directly to ask them for their stories. We wanted to know the difference that OEC Fiber had made in their lives. These firsthand accounts tell us more about what OEC Fiber can do than anything anyone in our office could ever say. Chelsee Wilson of Blanchard told us about the struggles she and her family had after moving back to Blanchard. The best internet option they had available was an antenna on their roof. Think about that for a second. Watching TV with an antenna is hard enough. Weather can cause your signal to go in and out, changing coverage without

warning and enjoying it in every room of your home can be nearly impossible unless you want to rewire everything. Imagine doing that with your internet. Like many of us, the pandemic moved Chelsee’s workspace from the office to her home. How can you work from home without good internet? “I had no idea how I was going to do my job,” said Chelsee. With internet speeds at frequently less than 5 Mbps, barely enough to check email, it was a more than valid concern. Most streaming content requires 15-25 Mbps. That makes Zoom meetings we have all become accustomed to over the last year nearly impossible. Chelsee and her husband Tanner signed up for service as soon as it became available. Our crews worked hard to bring her online as quickly as possible. Now, the stress of wondering how she is going to do her job has disappeared. “The fiber… has made working from home a breeze!” Chelsee said. “OEC Fiber saved the day, year really!” What about you? How has OEC Fiber impacted your life? Share your #subscriberstory with us at www.OECFiber.com/stories.

AMAZING IN Award winning Newcastle woman mentored by OEC board member By Doug Hill There’s a reason that Marlana Tidwell was selected to represent Oklahoma at the Miss Amazing national summit this month. It’s simply because she’s an astonishing young woman who has overcome various challenges in her life. The twenty-something Newcastle resident demonstrates qualities that have been recognized by many. One of those is retired OEC lineman and current board of trustees member Danny Watters. The two first crossed paths when Watters was volunteering with Special Olympics and Tidwell was participating as an athlete. They became friends. Both share a love of music and Watters has been teaching Tidwell to play guitar. Watters will accompany Tidwell to the Miss Amazing national summit in Nashville, Tennessee. It’s the nation’s largest event dedicated to celebrating and empowering women and girls with disabilities. One of Tidwell’s co-workers at the Newcastle Senior Center suggested she’d be a natural for membership in the nonprofit Miss Amazing organization. “I came into work one morning and my friend said, ‘why don’t you get into Miss Amazing,’ and I asked what’s that,” Tidwell said. “She said it’s for disability girls like you and I said OK, I’ll give it a shot. That’s how I entered it.” Miss Amazing is a national self-esteem movement that encourages personal development, self-advocacy and equipping girls and women with the practical skills needed for building meaningful relationships and achieving their full potential. “The elderly people at the Newcastle Senior Center are so dear to me,” Tidwell said. “They like me working there a lot and it brightens up their day. I’ve made friends with people there.” Tidwell assists with food service and has learned to prepare meals for the residents. She’s mastered new skills there. “I’ve learned to peel potatoes by hand,” Tidwell said.

MANY WAYS “They offered me to go to Nashville so I’m trying to get sponsors so I can go there. I think it will be a fun experience.” —Marlana Tidwell The best thing she cooks is macaroni and cheese. Tidwell is looking forward to representing Oklahoma at the Miss Amazing national summit. “It will be a first-time experience for me,” she said. “They offered me to go to Nashville so I’m trying to get sponsors so I can go there. I think it will be a fun experience, I’m looking forward to going and have never been to Tennessee before.” OEC’s Watters is looking forward to the experience as well. As Tidwell’s mentor he has encouraged her to try new things, and playing guitar is one of them. “I started playing guitar when I was 18, before I graduated high school,” Tidwell said. “Danny said why don’t you learn to play guitar and I said OK, I’ll give it a shot. Then he taught me how. Ever since I’ve had my own Gretsch guitar. I like to play anywhere from gospel to country music. It was hard to learn the chords as I went. I practice a lot of music and sing, too.” Tidwell’s favorite musicians are Carrie Underwood, Reba McEntire, Blake Shelton, Alan Jackson and Toby Keith. She also enjoys Danny Watters and his bluegrass band. “Our band has a fundraiser for the Newcastle Senior Center twice a year,” Watters said. “I knew Marlana from the Special Olympics and she and her parents were out in the audience one year while she was still in high school. I went up to her and asked if she’d like to sing a song with me tonight. We like to feature new people up there. She said sure and

stood up there in front of a crowded auditorium. We did ‘I’ll Fly Away’ and she’s been singing at every one of the fundraisers we’ve had since then. She works at that guitar, and we’d been having lessons every week until the pandemic hit. We’re going to start back up pretty quick and get her ready for Nashville.” Tidwell also participates in a Norman arts festival every March. “They have that for the special needs kids doing art along with a talent show where they perform like on The Voice,” Watters said. “It’s not just her group, it’s from the Grady County Special Olympics, too. It’s a pretty large event at Norman North High School. She’s involved in that, as well.” Tidwell also enjoys reading and frequent visits to Newcastle’s public library. “I like reading Twilight Zone and anything about vampires,” she said. “I read a lot in high school.” Part of the Miss Amazing organization’s approach is to help girls and women prepare for their futures through personal development, engagement in the community and speaking up for themselves. There’s a thread through Tidwell’s interests which involve serving those in need, such as at the Newcastle Senior Center. “I’m interested in nursing later and helping elderly people who can’t take care of themselves,” she said. “I want to continue doing Special Olympics and help people and lend a hand when I can.” Tidwell credited others who have helped her in life. Along with Watters, another is her Newcastle Senior Center friend Esmé Pesicka who is assisting with the Miss Amazing national summit trip fund raising campaign. Tidwell is also anticipating a life-changing event next year. “I’m getting married to my wonderful fiancée Michael,” she said. “He has a disability just like me. He’s 27 and I’m 25.” Tidwell recognizes that marriage is a considerable responsibility. “My parents explained that part to me,” she said. “Michael and I have been going out for three years. He lives in Chickasha, Oklahoma.” Watters produced a photo on his phone of the two lovebirds together. They’re an adorable young couple. “Michael and I met at Special Olympics,” Tidwell said. “Basketball and bowling are our favorite sports.” OEC is one of Tidwell’s Miss Amazing national summit sponsors and wishes her the best representing Oklahoma at the national event. www.okcoop.org

A balanced fuel mix promotes power reliability By Anne Prince As I’ve noted before in my past columns, the energy industry is undergoing a dramatic transformation as consumer demand for more renewable energy sources grows, and innovation and technology continue to advance exponentially. You’re likely witnessing this energy evolution first-hand. In driving across the region, you may have noticed fields of solar panels along with an increase in solar panels on your neighbors’ roofs. Maybe you’ve heard about the impending changes in the transportation sector with most major vehicle companies announcing plans to offer more electric vehicles at more affordable prices. [413310703] Consumer interest in renewable energy is strong and growing. In addition, national studies indicate that consumers have an expectation that companies operate in an ethical and responsible manner––including when it comes to the environment. At OEC, we have always put the good of our community first. While our primary function is to provide reliable and affordable energy to our members, we are more than an electricity provider. Because we are a co-op, our mission includes enriching the lives of our members and serving the long-term interests of our community. We feel we’re doing both by investing in renewable energy sources. Green energy is certainly not new. Solar, wind and hydro power have been around for decades. However, the recent innovations and advances in renewable

technology have led to sharp decreases in cost, making it more feasible and accessible. In recent years, Western Farmers Electric Cooperative (WFEC, OEC’s wholesale power provider) has been able to adjust its fuel mix by utilizing more renewables. Today, over 40% of its fuel mix is comprised of renewable energy sources, the majority of which is wind. However, to borrow a nautical analogy, it takes a long time to turn the direction of a large ship — and changing the energy mix we use to power homes and businesses doesn’t happen overnight. While renewable energy use is increasing, we will still depend on traditional forms of energy to keep power flowing reliably to your home. After all, solar and wind energy are referred to as “intermittent” power since the sun does not always shine and the wind does not always blow. This fact coupled with the growing demand for renewables creates its own challenges. That’s why there is real value in maintaining a balanced mixture of fuel types to ensure reliability, resiliency and meet the growing demand for electricity. Albert Einstein once observed that, “Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving.” In order for OEC to meet the growing demand for renewable energy and ensure the reliability of our power supply, we must constantly make operational adjustments as we strive for balance and a brighter future for our members.

Anne Prince writes on consumer and cooperative affairs for the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association, the national trade association representing more than 900 local electric cooperatives. From growing suburbs to remote farming communities, electric co-ops serve as engines of economic development for 42 million Americans across 56% of the nation’s landscape. www.okcoop.org

WFEC GENERATION REPORT Western Farmers Electric Cooperative (WFEC), OEC's wholesale generation and transmission power provider, has an impressive renewable portfolio that includes wind, hydro and solar. OEC's Solar Garden, located at Interstate 35 and Highway 77 in Norman, began producing power in February 2017, and Tuttle's 40-acre Solar Farm began operation in March 2017. As more solar facilities come online, expect to see it added to WFEC's generation report, increasing the already robust mix of renewable energy sources.
