FROM the

TOP Patrick Grace, CEO

It's been one year since OEC Fiber opened for business, and what a year it has been. Thousands of active subscribers, hundreds of miles of fiber line in place, one incredibly hard-working team, and we're only beginning. At press time, we just crossed the 7,000 subscriber mark — what a fantastic feat. We are moving at speeds unheard of in the co-op broadband world, and it's all thanks to you. The trend of electric cooperatives stepping up to provide broadband to our rural consumers has picked up a lot of momentum in the last few years. Thanks to the national associations working to secure federal funding, electric co-ops across the nation are able to be the internet source rural communities so desperately need. I recently spoke with CNET for an article titled Electric Cooperatives Could be the Key to Solving the Rural Digital Divide along with a co-op manager in Virginia, and it's fascinating to see the same struggles that exist in other states and how their co-ops are taking on the responsibility of taking broadband where no one else will. OEC's service area is pretty urban and populated compared to the typical rural electric co-op, which is why we were surprised when we discovered those living a couple of miles from our most populous areas had little to no internet access. We realized our communities couldn't expect to do business, teach our kids, access telemedicine or take advantage of all kinds of other things without access to the internet, so we stepped in. Our earliest members did the exact same thing in the mid-1930s when they saw their urban counterparts living with electricity and no company willing to bring it to them. It's just what we do as a co-op. We see a need and find a way to fill it. Thank you for walking alongside us and supporting our efforts to bring high-speed internet where no one else will right here in central Oklahoma.

Introducing the new Standard Residential Rate

R

EN

EC's board of trustees approved an alternative to the time-of-use rate, which has been the only residential rate for the better part of the last decade. Members who have tested the new Standard Residential Rate have discovered long-term savings by deciding to switch, and you could too. "Several years ago when we rolled out our time-of-use rate, it put the opportunity to save money in the members' hands by making small adjustments to the time of day they used electricity rather than the amount they used," said CEO Patrick Grace. "What we have found, however, tells us members simply want a rate they can understand and one that makes their bills reasonable." Created as an option for members who would rather not program appliances or modify electricity use — especially during the hot summer months — the Standard Residential Rate features one year-round price per kilowatt hour and a discount for kilowatt hours used in excess of 1,000 during the winter months. "Our data shows us that about 7,500 member accounts could save over $200 over the course of the year just by switching rates," said Grace. "Others could save less or more. Try out our website's rate calculator to use your account's data from the last 12 months to determine the best rate for you." It's important to remember that most members who switch to the Standard Residential Rate will not see savings right away, but could over the course of a year. For example, summer bills could be lower when compared to last summer's, but winter bills could be higher. "We try to avoid comparing one year to another because there are so many factors when considering an electric bill," said Grace. "Weather plays a huge part in determining energy savings (and increases), as does a change in the household or their routine, natural gas prices, the cost of meeting energy regulations and more." Interested in learning more or seeing which rate is right for you? Visit www.okcoop.org/rates for more information and a comparison of rates.

Western Farmers Electric Cooperative (WFEC), OEC's wholesale generation and transmission power provider, has an impressive renewable portfolio that includes wind, hydro and — recently added — solar. OEC's Solar Garden, located at Interstate 35 and Highway 77 in Norman, began producing power in February 2017, and Tuttle's 40-acre Solar Farm began operation in March 2017. As more solar facilities come online, expect to see it added to WFEC's generation report, increasing the already robust mix of renewable energy sources.

Data collected from Western Farmers Electric Cooperative reflects generation and Southwest Power Pool purchases during November 2019.

OEC provides most reliable power in central Oklahoma 6

Oklahoma Electric Co-op News • March 2020

O

RELIABILITY

OEC is our name. Reliability is our game. As an OEC member, you already have a leg up over your investorowned utility neighbors. How? Recent data shows investor-owned utility customers were without power 140 percent longer than OEC members in 2019. Reliability matters, and no one in central Oklahoma is doing it better than OEC. "In 2016, our members experienced an average outage time of 129 minutes for the entire year," said CEO Patrick Grace. "That number dropped to 53.4 in 2019, meaning — across the board — our members were without power for an average of less than one hour in 2019, which is pretty remarkable." OEC's score of 53.4 places us well below the average score of 121 among electric co-ops across the nation and takes into consideration the outage time due to our generation and transmission provider, Western Farmers Electric Cooperative. If we were to only look at the outage factors we can control, that number drops to 42.3. The Oklahoma Corporation Commission reported investor-owned utility scores have a three-year average of 108 to 148 — 104-177 percent higher than OEC's score. If you're keeping record at home, the lower the score the better. After all, the goal is to keep the lights on.

LIGHTNING'S SIGNIFICANT ROLE IN RELIABILITY Oklahoma is the second most lightning prone state behind Texas and it showed in our electrical system prior to 2017. This helped OEC's board of trustees create a 2017 strategic initiative to address and eradicate issues caused by lightning. "I believe our system hardening initiative continues to have a major impact on these scores," said Nick Shumaker, manager of system engineering. "We emphasized the much needed upgrading of our lightning protection equipment, which has played a large role in reducing outage time." Proof that this focused effort is paying off can be found in the data. "Since 2016, we've been using analytics to stop outages before they occur,” said Shumaker. "We've used data to more efficiently organize our linemen and have reduced outages due to equipment failure by 60 percent. This is pretty incredible considering the number of lightning strikes in 2019 increased by 50 percent." Strides will continue to be made in the upgrading of lightning protection equipment until all feeders on all substations are operating at a satisfactory level.

OTHER EFFORTS BEING MADE TO PROVIDE RELIABLE ELECTRICITY Vegetation management plays a large role in providing safe, reliable electricity. Co-ops and electric companies in general sometimes get a bad rap for the role we play in the removal of trees, but our efforts help our system withstand Oklahoma's unpredictable weather. We're a fan of trees at OEC, just not intermingled with our electric lines. In fact, we encourage the safe planting of trees in a mindful location in conjunction with our infrastructure. Visit www.okcoop.org to download our free tree-planting guide. Be sure to also check next month's Co-op News for ways you can claim a free tree during the month of April! All of our efforts culminate with one mission: to improve your quality of life with the safe delivery of highly reliable, reasonably priced electric service, innovative energy programs and exceptional member service. www.okcoop.org

YOUTH & LEADERSHIP

Last chance for former Youth Tour winners, future engineers to apply for scholarships One $10,000 scholarship, two $2,000 scholarships and four $1,000 scholarships are up for grabs from the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA), and the deadline to apply is April 1. The Glenn English Youth Tour Alumni Scholarship committee offers one $10,000 scholarship and four $1,000 scholarships to former Youth Tour participants. It is proud to have awarded over $100,000 to Youth Tour alumni since starting the program in 2014. To be eligible, applicants must — among other criteria — be a U.S. citizen, have participated in Youth Tour and be working on completing his/her first undergraduate degree. A former OEC Youth Tour winner, Hayden Hefner from Bridge Creek, won the $10,000 scholarship in 2015. The interest and success of the Youth Tour Alumni scholarship inspired the Glenn English Scholarship Committee to partner with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Rural Electric Power Conference (IEEE-REPC) to add an additional opportunity: The Next Generation Rural Engineering Scholarship. Each year, the committee awards two $2,000 scholarships to college students seeking a career in the rural electric engineering field. Applicants of the Next Generation Rural Engineering Scholarship are not required to be former Youth Tour participants. Application portals for both scholarships are open until April 1. Visit www.okcoop.org/ scholarships to apply.

Three ways to electrify your lawn care By Abby Berry

S

pring is just around the corner, and you can practically smell the freshly-cut grass. If you’re in the market to upgrade your lawn care equipment, you may want to consider electric (or battery-powered) options. Gas-powered lawn mowers and trimmers may be your go-to, but times they are a changin'. Electric lawn care equipment options are becoming more popular than ever, offering consumers faster charging times, longer battery life and quieter, greener products compared to their gas-powered counterparts. Here are three ways you can electrify your lawn care this spring. [4209101601]

ELECTRIC LAWN MOWERS Electric lawn mowers have come a long way over the last few years. Early models required corded connections, which were tricky to manage––but the cord has been cut. Newer cordless electric mowers are certainly more expensive than gas-powered mowers, but much of the upfront cost can be recovered since electricity is a less expensive fuel than gas, and electric engines generally require less maintenance than gas engines. Cordless electric mowers typically range from $200 to $500. Electric mowers are suitable for most lawn care needs, with batteries that typically require about one to two hours to fully charge, and most batteries can run for a full hour. That said, if you have a large yard (half an acre or larger), a gas-powered option may be best to suit your needs.

12

ELECTRIC TRIMMERS Cordless electric string trimmers are a great option for most lawns. Traditionally, like lawn mowers, string trimmers have typically been powered by gas. But new versions of electric trimmers are improving and are now considered worthy competitors of gas-powered models. Cordless electric trimmers are much quieter and easier to use, but most batteries last about 30 to 45 minutes. So, if you have a lot of space to trim, you may want to consider a back-up battery or plan to work in short bursts. If you’re interested in purchasing an electric trimmer, the main factors to consider are the battery’s life, charge time and power. Costs can vary depending on your needs, but you can find a quality version for about $100.

Oklahoma Electric Co-op News • March 2020

ENERGY EFFICIENCY

ELECTRIC LEAF BLOWERS After cutting and trimming your lawn, you’ll need to clear off those walkways and patios for the finishing touch. If you don’t want to deal with the maintenance of a gas-powered blower or the restraints of a corded blower, a cordless electric version is a great option. Cordless electric leaf blowers are lightweight and easy to maneuver, but they don’t offer quite as much power as gas-powered and corded blowers. If your leaf blowing and clearing needs are minimal, a cordless electric leaf blower can get the job done. Costs for a cordless electric blower vary depending on power and battery quality, but you can purchase a dependable model for about $150 and up. If you’re looking to electrify your lawn care equipment, be sure to do your homework. Search online for the latest reviews, and check trusted websites like ConsumerReports. org. With a little research, you’ll be well on your way to Lawn of the Month – with less maintenance, hassle and noise (and your neighbors will thank you!).
