Hidden Account Numbers Worth $50 Each month, OEC will pay $50 to the two co-op members who locate their hidden account numbers inside the Co-op News that month. The hidden account numbers will be placed at random within the text of each issue and not on the mailing label. The amounts will simultaneously increase in $50 increments until one or both account numbers are located by their respective owners or until the maximum of $500 is reached. 1. One of the hidden account numbers must be your own. 2. You must advise OEC by phone, mail or in person at the co-op’s office by the 15th of the month. If you find your account number call the Member Relations department at 217-6708.

FROM the

TOP Patrick Grace, CEO

October is National Cooperative Month, and we love celebrating all that makes us and the thousands of other cooperatives unique. One of the most distinctive differences between a co-op and an investor-owned business is the fact that co-ops are not-for-profit entities that operate at-cost. When profits are made above operating costs, we distribute those margins back to the consumer-members, not investors. What we refer to as "capital credits" represent these margins. In October, virtually every member who purchased electricity in 2008 will receive a check in the mail from OEC. You will find more information about capital credits along with the check, or you can visit www.okcoop.org to learn more. But the value of being part of a co-op doesn't lie solely in its financial health. It's true that no one benefits financially from a co-op business, so there are no profits or motivation for profits. What we hang our hats on is our dedication to quality, service and safety. You — our member-consumers — are why we are in business and who we are in business to serve. This is shown through our commitment to our communities, our focus on providing reliable electric service, our transparency and, most recently, our relentless effort to provide you with high-speed, affordable internet service. You are more to us at OEC than just a customer. We hope you know that, as your trusted energy advisor, we strive to improve your quality of life through the safe delivery of highly reliable, reasonably priced electric service, innovative energy programs and exceptional member service.

How you can make your ORU donation go further

T

he OEC Foundation has disbursed more than $5 million in grants to local organizations, individuals and families throughout its 25-year history thanks to the thousands of members who round up their electric bills each month. Did you know you can give more than your bill's change? Created in 1993 as a way to give back to our communities, Operation Round Up® (ORU) has become a reliable source of funding for certain nonprofits across OEC's seven-county service area. From Meals on Wheels of Norman and Veterans Corner to Citizens Advisory Board and countless other organizations, the generosity of OEC's members reaches far and wide. "I am constantly in awe of the willingness of OEC members to round up their electric bills for a great cause such as this," said Alan Davenport, OEC Foundation board president. "This board is passionate about not only funding worthy causes but aligning itself with community partners who share our vision to help those around us." About 80 percent of OEC's members elect to round up their bills each month, with the change — an average of $6 per year — being collected for the OEC Foundation board to disburse. "This board is comprised of community leaders who have volunteered their time to serve and ensure members' dollars are spent carefully and responsibly," said Tory Tedder-Loffland, OEC education and outreach coordinator. "Each board member takes great pride in the ability to serve their district in this way." Over the last 25 years, ORU grants have helped nonprofit organizations provide meals, clothes, Christmas gifts and more to their clientele. Local charities are not the only ones that have enjoyed the much-needed grants received from ORU. Countless families and individuals have been approved for requests ranging from dental and vision needs to the construction of handicap accessible ramps, school clothes and supplies, and more. Over $5 million in needs met by OEC's membership. That's making a difference. "Members are always welcome to go above and beyond their monthly contribution," said Tedder-Loffland. "The more funds we have to distribute throughout our service area, the more we can ensure our neighbors and friends are well cared for and have what they need to succeed." At press time, the next meeting date has not been decided. Please visit www.okcoop.org/ORU or contact Tory Tedder-Loffland at 217-6726 or ORU@okcoop.org for more information and to obtain an application.

WFEC GENERATION REPORT

Six linemen achieve journeyman status

E

lectric linework consistently ranks as one of the most dangerous jobs, and it's why safety is OEC's top priority year after year. It takes knowledge and skill to do the work of a lineman — especially in Oklahoma's ever-changing weather conditions. OEC's board of trustees and management are proud to announce the six linemen who recently completed the journeyman certification program. Tim Gilbert Brent Glover Nate Hulse

Throughout the last four years, they have studied their craft intently — both in the classroom and in the field. They have studied and passed exams and trained over 8,000 hours to ensure they are safely providing our members with reliable electric service. They join a crop of previously certified journeyman linemen who answer the call no matter the time of day or weather conditions to restore power to member-consumers across our seven-county service area. Congratulations to all of the newest journeyman linemen.

Western Farmers Electric Cooperative (WFEC), OEC's wholesale generation and transmission power provider, has an impressive renewable portfolio that includes wind, hydro and — recently added — solar. OEC's Solar Garden, located at Interstate 35 and Highway 77 in Norman, began producing power in February 2017, and Tuttle's 40-acre Solar Farm began operation in March 2017. As more solar facilities come online, expect to see it added to WFEC's generation report, increasing the already robust mix of renewable energy sources.

CAPITAL CREDITS

CO-OP VALUES

A CO-OP MEMBER’S DIVIDENDS

Unlike investor-owned utility companies that strive to generate profits for shareholders, electric cooperatives like OEC operate on an at-cost basis. Any profits made by OEC — referred to as margins — are returned to the consumermembers. Capital credits represent these dividends.

6

OEC board of trustees approves $2.7 million in capital credits to be paid to members

O

EC’s board of trustees has authorized the distribution of over $2.7 million in capital credits to members of the cooperative who purchased electricity during parts of 2008 — $788,000 of which is being passed on by Western Farmers Electric Cooperative (WFEC, OEC's wholesale power provider) to those who were members from 1988 to 1991. Capital credits are somewhat similar to the dividends paid to shareholders of investor-owned utilities, except the co-op’s “shareholders” are the members it serves, and the “dividends” are the capital credits. It is one of the things that makes the cooperative business unique. [7602100115] Despite a diligent effort to notify former co-op members, there are more than 900 who still need to update their addresses in order to receive their capital credits. Please visit www.okcoop.org/capitalcredits and, if you see a name you recognize on the list who could’ve been an OEC member during 2008, please have that person submit the online form and any accompanying documents. All address updates must be received in writing. If you see the name of a family member who is deceased and you are the rightful heir, you can download the form from www.okcoop.org/ capitalcredits and return it along with the appropriate paperwork to transfer all remaining capital credits into your name. Checks will not be issued for less than $25 unless a member has no further refunds due for future years. Refunds of less than $25 are retained until and added to the next distribution. A full list of names – both individuals and businesses owed money – can be found at www.okcoop.org/capitalcredits along with appropriate forms. Mail paperwork and supporting documents to OEC, P.O. Box 1208, Norman, OK, 73070.

OEC offers STEM-approved curriculum for area classrooms

A

re you a teacher, parent or grandparent who would like to see electricity education taught in the classroom? OEC's Get Charged! handson educational curriculum does just that while meeting state STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) requirements for classrooms and schools. OEC Education and Outreach Coordinator Tory TedderLoffland has led the classroom program for four years and is gearing up for another year of educating the next generation about the importance and dangers of electricity. “OEC's board of trustees truly values education and sees the importance of offering programs like Get Charged! which promotes the learning of electricity through science experiments,” said Tedder-Loffland. “The kids always have a great time. Plus, the material goes right along with their science curriculum and meets state science education requirements.” Full curriculums, teacher's guides and kits are available free of charge for first through fifth grades if Tedder-Loffland is not able to be physically present in the classroom. The kit includes videos, projects and experiments focused on the components of electricity. "As part of the most popular experiment, the students learn about circuits, conductors and insulators, and draw a schematic of the circuit they are tasked with constructing, which powers a small light bulb," said Tedder-Loffland. "Later, that circuit operates a telegraph the students use to communicate using Morse Code." Get Charged! includes more than just electricity education. It also involves learning a little history. “No matter where I go, they think it’s so cool experiencing what was once a revolutionary form of communication,” said Tedder-Loffland. Contact Tory Tedder-Loffland, 217-6726 or tory@okcoop. org, for more information and visit www.okcoop.org/youth to explore all the programs offered to youth in OEC’s service area and to reserve a Get Charged! kit for your classroom.

Get Charged! is part of OEC's youth development initiative, L.E.A.R.N.: Leading, Educating, Advancing and Rewarding the Next generation. L.E.A.R.N. encompasses the catalog of youth programs OEC offers to students, teachers and schools in our service area.

CONCERN FOR COMMUNITY

through giving T wenty-six OEC employees teamed up with Aging Services during United Way of Norman's (UWN) Day of Caring (DOC). The annual service event brought together over 600 volunteers from businesses in Cleveland County. Over 30 nonprofit agencies in Norman, Moore, Little Axe and Noble benefitted from DOC, which kicked off UWN's annual fundraising campaign. "I enjoy seeing so many members of our community come together to help out our often-struggling nonprofits complete tasks they might not be able to perform due to budget restraints, staffing and the necessary time commitment," said OEC Education and Outreach Coordinator Tory Tedder-Loffland, who also served as DOC chairperson. OEC's volunteer group spent time repairing and painting interior walls at the Aging Services office, as well as construct a handicap-accessible ramp for a client of Aging Services who lives in Lexington. It was a busy day filled with rewarding work for a deserving organization. “I always love to see the business community come together during DOC and serve these nonprofits in such impactful ways,” said Michelle Hohlier, OEC Fiber sales and marketing business developer. “I’m especially proud to be part of an organization that places such a high priority on serving our communities in every way possible.” [4404200201] In addition to their volunteer work, employees also pledged over $18,000 in donations to UWN during the 2019 campaign, one which CEO Patrick Grace served as co-chair with his wife, Kelley. “I’m always blown away by our employees’ generosity,” Grace said. “Their $18,000 in donations will have such an impact on the UWN agencies that serve all over our service area, and their work during DOC doesn’t go unnoticed. I couldn’t be more proud.”

You might have noticed OEC's Autumn McMahon, manager of member relations, or Daniel Lofland, energy efficiency solutions specialist, cruising around in a small-but-mighty electric vehicle (EV). It's hard to miss being fully wrapped in OEC's logo and signature green. Those who have had the opportunity to ride in or drive it have been pleasantly surprised by its responsiveness, space and range. "While it's a fun car to drive around, we purchased it because we believe EVs are the future of transportation," said McMahon. "As our members' trusted energy advisor, we thought who better to put this new technology to the test to help our members decide if it's the right car for them?" McMahon and Lofland have used their EV experiences to help educate not only OEC's members, but the general public on the the pros and cons of owning an EV. You can find them on social media in the "Deck My Ride" and "EV Moments" video series, where they test myths about EVs and ride along with others as they experience an EV for the first time. You can also read more about Lofland's EV experiences at www. okcoop.org/EV. Did you know Oklahoma ranks number one among states to own an EV? MyEV.com said this is because "Oklahoma residents enjoy low electricity rates, a high ratio of — AUTUMN MCMAHON charging stations to residents and the highest EV sales boost over the past year at 162.7 percent." Because of the impending "EV boom" on the horizon, OEC has taken proactive steps for members looking to make the jump from combustionengine to EV. "We've had about 40 members on an EV pilot rate for the majority of 2019," said Lofland. "It's been so successful, OEC's board of trustees decided to continue it into 2020. Essentially, members can charge their EVs overnight at a half-price kilowatt-hour rate." EV members may also be eligible for a $200 rebate for their at-home charging station. "What we are attempting to do is ease any concerns our members might have about EVs," said McMahon. "We're also careful to point out the cons because an EV might not be right for everyone. What we do know is there are a lot of myths surrounding EVs, and we want to test those ourselves and show our members all the good, and potentially the not-so-good, features of an EV." Visit www.okcoop.org/EV as we continue to expand our EV resources.
