Riders Activity Guide January - February 2014 Issue
THE
RIDERS RAGAZINE

Talkin’ Trash
Each year in January most of us reflect back on the past and previous years to ascertain what and why we have done the things we’ve done in the past. We then make pledges to ourselves and others about the coming year and call them resolutions. Typically by February those things we have committed to for the New Year have been disregarded and we are once again not exercising, eating too much, smoking too much, or drinking too much. Most of you know in 2010 Cheryl and I got clean and sober. Well, in 2013, I got drunk. I don’t like the way I behave when I am drunk, so the next day I got back on the wagon. You see, yesterday is in the past. Admit your mistake, ask for forgiveness, deal with the consequences and move on. Today I am clean and sober again. I only have to deal with today. And I can do anything for one day. Folks, I abused drugs and alcohol for 38 years… everything from smoking marijuana to shooting heroin in my arm. When I stopped I
was consuming a thirty pack of beer daily…and riding my motorsickle. The peculiar part is, I didn’t even know I wanted to stop using drugs and alcohol, but I knew I wanted something different. Outlaw Spur 1% sent me a text message recently saying, “You don’t have to clean up your act first. You come as you are, God will make you what you ought to be.” (Bet you didn’t expect that after watching Gangland, did you?) Unwittingly, that is what I did. I turned my problems over to my Higher Power and ask Jesus for help. But be careful what you ask for because you might just get it…and so much more. I sure wasn’t ready for this meteoric ride! I know those of you who have read this Rag for a long time have witnessed my changes. Today I am happily married to a recovering alcoholic/drug addict ― and she is married to one. We live in our own home and own three businesses employing several people. “God is making us into what we ought to be.” I know that God Loves Me, and that my history doesn’t have to destroy my destiny. God loves you too. With God you can do anything for one day. The Janitor

What is the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association? We are an Association of Combat Veterans from all branches of the United States Armed Forces who ride motorcycles as a hobby. Our mission now is to support and defend those who have defended our country and our freedoms. Our focus is to help veteran care facilities provide a warm meal, clothing, shelter, and guidance, or simply to say “Thank You.” and “Welcome Home.” Our membership is comprised of Full Members ( those with verified combat service ) and Supporter Members ( those who have non-combat military service, and have a sincere dedication to helping veterans ). We have members from nearly all 50 states and living abroad. Many members continue to serve in our Armed Forces, with several serving in combat areas now. We sponsor and/or participate in many motorcycle-related charity events each year, and as a non-profit organization, donate to various veteran care facilities and veteran charities. To get more information about the CVMA you can go to their website at: www.ok.combatvet.org or you can Ask a Combat Vet!

You Have My Word “Did you get it in writing?” Darrell ruefully looks away and I know the answer before he even speaks. Years ago a handshake was as good as gold and a verbal commitment was equivalent to a written contract. Sadly “you have my word” has lost its meaning. During one of my single mom, new in a twelve step program days, I had enough money to get a couple of gallons of gas and a loaf of bread. I had paid and was sitting in my car when I realized the cashier had given me back too much money. In fact, it was ten dollars too much, and I really could have used it. I sat there staring at the ten dollar bill thinking this could be a God thing and, no sooner had that thought crossed my mind, when I felt the conviction. You see I had been working a program of honesty, and keeping money which didn’t belong to me

was not a God thing. It was dishonest. I knew what I had to do. Ashley, my oldest daughter, asked me what was wrong. I told her the girl inside gave me too much money, and I had to go give it back. She then made this powerful statement that continues to resonate with me today, “wow Mom you sure are becoming an honest person”. Integrity – the quality of being honest and fair: soundness of moral character. I had the honor to work for a very prominent public figure. She would say that a person can lose everything and recover, but if you lose your integrity it is very hard to get it back. I knew exactly what she meant. My word used to mean nothing. I could always justify my lies, or why I didn’t keep my word. I played the victim roll very well, and if it wasn’t for something or someone else I would not have had to lie. In
fact, I learned to start lying at a very young age. Don’t most children? There were those family secrets to protect, or an incident caused by me which I wouldn’t take responsibility for. I wanted to spare myself the consequences so I would lie. It’s okay...it’s just a little white lie I would tell myself. By the way, what is a white lie? Are there black lies or red lies? Is one worse than the other? A lie is a lie — period. It took time to salvage what little integrity I had left with my family and friends. Talk was cheap. It took action. It took me being accountable for me. The foundation of my life was full of cracks, and only I could repair it. We think we spare people pain when we lie to them. We tell ourselves “we don’t want to hurt their feelings,” but more often than not, the truth prevails and they are hurt even more because now the trust they had in us has been compromised. I always tell Darrell to tell me the
“microscopic truth”, this means no fluff or candy coating…no “white lies”. It may sting but it doesn’t scar, and I know I can take what he says to the bank. Darrell and I meet a lot of people. He takes everyone at face value and gives them the benefit of the doubt. I, on the other hand, watch and listen. I watch to see how they treat others. I listen to how they talk about others. I wait and see if they keep their word, not only to me, but to others. Do they value their integrity? Are they of moral character? Are their actions pleasing to God? Are they trustworthy? Unfortunately Darrell has come to realize a handshake in most cases is just that, a handshake, but I refuse to give up on humanity. I hold out hope that one day “you have my word” will actually mean something again. Cheryl Briggs

They believed in us when very few others did. Congratulations again Norm, on such an incredible honor! For more on this story go to www.motorcyclemuseum.org Oklahoma Biker would like to congratulate Tulsa’s Norm McDonald who was recently inducted into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame. Norm McDonald is probably best known for being the co-founder of the popular K&N performance air filters for motorcycles. Yet his involvement in the motorcycle industry dates back to the ‘50’s when he and AMA Hall of Famer Ken Johnson opened a motorcycle shop in Loma Linda, CA. Norm McDonald’s contributions to the motorcycle industry are far too many to list in such limited space, but here are just a few: • 1st Yamaha Dealer • Co-creator of the K&N Cotton Gauze Air Filter • 1st motorcycle dealer to sell a million+ dollars of Yamaha products in one year • Developed the careers of such riders as Walker Evans, John Baily, Malcom Smith, Kenny Roberts, Phil McDonald and

Are You Covered in an Accident The sound of sirens, chaos, confusion, disbelief and fear filled his mind as his body was wracked with pain. The paramedics questioned him as they loaded him into the ambulance to rush him to the hospital. Weeks later, medical bills begin to arrive. He is still in rehab as the bills pile up. How could that other driver be so careless? How could that other driver not carry insurance? This is an all too common situation; the innocent party in a wreck having to file bankruptcy because the person at fault either doesn’t have insurance or is only insured for the minimum liability required by the state of Oklahoma. Having been an insurance agent for over 10 years, I have seen this situation time and time again. Oklahoma has one of the highest number of uninsured drivers. Uninsured/ Underinsured motorists coverage is designed to protect you in situations such as this. It pays medical bills, lost wages, as well as pain and suffering. It covers you and the people in your auto or on your bike in the event that the other party is at fault for the accident and that other party does not have liability insurance or does not have enough insurance to cover your injuries.
When a biker is involved in an accident, there ARE injuries. This is critical coverage. There are different limits available, the lowest being 25,000/50,000. That amount would cover you and those in your car or on your bike 25,000 per person but no more than 50,000 combined. Prices vary from company to company. My goal is to educate you on what it covers, but the choice to purchase is up to you. If you have questions, please feel free to call my office. We are here to help you. Christine Wilson

HARLEY SPORTSTER CRASH It was Jan 7, 2012 and it was just a normal day. I woke up early to take a 4 hour road trip with my sister’s fiancée. Can’t for the life of me remember what the actually route name was but that’s rather irrelevant at this point. I was riding a Harley Sportster. We headed out at about 8:45 am and we decided to head to a coffee shop before leaving town. It was turning out to be a normal ride until we hit Old Hwy 33 (scenic 412). I suddenly got a scary feeling that everything was going wrong. We were approaching an S curve on Hwy 33, so as usual I passed my sister’s fiancée to ride quickly thru the S turn. I had recently got a speeding ticket so I didn’t go faster than 55 mph — still faster than my sister’s fiancée was going. Thats when some guy in a car (can’t remeber make or model) turned in front of me and stopped. I hit him hard! My head hit the top corner panel of his car, followed by my shoulder. I also got racked by the windshield of my bike. I then did a rag doll thru the air, and landed on my left side. Extent of the damage: Broken shoulder, 6 separated ribs, bruised lung, bruised bladder, and the worst of it all was a disintegrated vertebrae which resulted in 2 rods and 25 screws going down my back. I am Ricky and I am 23 years old. The scary fact is... it can happen to you.
VA HOME LOANS The US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) offers eligible military veterans, service members and surviving spouses of service members and veterans the chance to buy or refinance homes without requiring a down-payment or mortgage insurance. The VA Home Loan Guaranty benefit can also be used than once by qualified borrowers. VA Home Loans are provided by private lenders, such as banks and mortgage companies. The VA guarantees a portion of the loan, enabling the lender
to provide you with more favorable terms. VA Loans Require No Downpayment VA loans do not require borrowers to make a downpayment. This helps military families transition into owning homes without a high cash outlay. VA Loans Require No Mortgage Insurance Mortgage lenders typically require either private mortgage insurance or FHA mortgage insurance on home loans with down payments of less than 20% of the home’s appraised value. The VA requires a onetime payment of a loan funding a closing. Eligible Borrowers May Reuse Home Loan Guaranty Benefits Eligible borrowers can re-use VA loan benefits to buy another home or for refinancing an existing home loan. Contact VA approved mortgage lenders for mortgage quotes and to learn more about applying for VA loan eligibility and finding a loan that is right for you. Neely Pearson

Cheryl Briggs Birthday Party and Toy Run Cheryl’s birthday is June 22nd. This year we are sponsoring a Toy Run for Ryder’s Army. The Toy Run benefits the toy closets of St. Francis and OU Children’s Hospitals. The Toy Closet helps comfort children and their families who are new to chemo and in the hospital for their birthday or Christmas. The Toy Closets are well stocked during the Christmas season, but start running low on toys about July. It is our goal to stock the toy closets for these children suffering from cancer. This will be a family event and will include live music, a bike show, and other activities for the family. Please start planning to attend this event and celebrate with Cheryl Briggs on her birthday. More details will be forthcoming in future issues of the Rag.

FOR THOSE WHO HAVE TO HAUL THE ICE CHEST I cannot believe I have lived long enough to see the year 2014. I had not expected it; and therefore, had not planned for it. My life has been lived fast ― and it has gone by fast. Yet I still enjoy riding motorsickles every bit as much as I enjoyed riding the chopper mini-bike my dad brought home in 1972. In retrospect I suppose it is safe to say that I will enjoy riding motorsickles for the rest of my existence here on earth. I guess it won’t be too many more years until my aging body will no longer be capable of holding up a Geezer Glide at stoplights (I am hoping I can still remember to put my feet down). If history is my teacher I am certain I will still want to ride on into my 90’s. That is where Santa Fe Customs comes into the picture. Santa Fe Customs specializes in converting Honda, Harley
Davidson, Victory, Kawasaki, and Triumph motorcycles into trikes using the nation’s leading trike conversion manufacturer Motor Trike, Inc. Motor Trike, Inc. is a family owned and operated company that began in 1994, so they have been manufacturing trike conversions for twenty years. These folks know how to build trike conversions and Santa Fe Customs knows how to install them at very reasonable prices. Working from his home shop Steve Woolery is able to keep his overhead low and pass the savings on to his valued customers. For information on how you can continue riding your motorsickle long after your body says it is time to quit call Steve at Santa Fe Customs 405-921-4553 or email santafecustoms@mail.com The Janitor

Sparks America Campgrounds (Oklahoma’s Biggest Bike Rally) is planning its upcoming event season. This year we are introducing the first “Mrs. Sparks America”, Biker Red. Mrs. Sparks will be helping promote our events and will be at all events meeting and greeting new as well as old patrons here. Currently we are expanding our stage, we now will have two stages side by side for our contests, games, bands and our big venue concerts. Last year at the Oct Biker bash we gave away a new 2014 Yamaha Bolt w/ custom paint job. Hopefully we will be able to do the same type of give away at some of our 2014 events. Sparks already offers electric and water hook-ups to our RV sites, as well as a new shower house to accommodate everyone during the events. At Sparks we strive to keep the campgrounds in beautiful conditions. Our tent camping area is well manicured with fire-rings available for campfires. In 2014 we will be having approx. (4) bike events ( including Bike Week in June), (4) Mud events, (2) Endurance Races, a Big Venue Concert set for July 2014, and as always a Charity event in Nov. that all proceeds will be donated to a children’s charity. Attached is a list of Event dates for 2014. Also I have attached a few pics of our new Mrs. Sparks America. Please feel free to give me a call for more information about our facilities and events here at Sparks America Campgrounds.

You learn to take care of your Spirit which helps you cruise through your journey just a little smoother. What is the moral of the story? Give your ride and your life to the Almighty and life gets just a little easier. Something to think about in the wind.
Taking Care How many times has your bike broken down and you could not fix it? For those that really love their bikes it seems like there is nothing that cannot be fixed fairly easily with a little patience and a hose clamp…maybe sometimes a little more ;-) But the truth is that more often than not a biker has learned what it takes to take care of their scooter in every situation. Am I right? Of course I’m right! Your Christian life is the same way. Romans 8:28 says “…for those who love God all things work together for good…” This does not mean that nothing bad will ever happen if you’re a believer. It means that with God you learn to make decisions that make life a little easier to handle.

I guess it’s rebuttal time to start with this issue. Once again I’ll start by saying that I find the term “Bro” disrespectful, always have and always will. Brother is the term I use for those I respect. It just seems to be a term to dilute the meaning. To Renegade, just keep on waving, it’s great to know someone is that happy. I didn’t say you couldn’t wave, just gave my reasons why I don’t. Quoting you,” So I’m not sure if “You’re” a biker, (even though) you got the doo rag, shades and a black t-shirt”. Really, that’s the requirements for being a biker? Just in case you are wondering - I have a bike too. Bro! Papa, I’d really like to know
the definition of a biker. It’s come to point of dilution that I don’t think there is true definition anymore. Your comment about motels and restaurants confused me. I eat at them and stay at motels. After riding 700 miles in a day, I like a shower and a comfortable bed and a warm meal. My point was if you buy a bike, ride it. I could join a Country Club, but that doesn’t make me High Society. Now let’s lighten things up a bit and talk about saving the Government some money by not putting up any more stupid road signs. Has anyone ever seen a sign that just makes you wonder what the hell?! I have.... While driving in Dallas, sandwiched between two concrete barriers I noticed they had put up a sign that said, “Do Not Pass”……… no shit! Anyone ever seen a sign that says “Guard rail damage ahead”? What’s the purpose of that sign? Has anybody ever hit one on purpose? If you’re going to hit it, you’re going to

hit it, it really doesn’t matter if somebody beat you to it. Deer Crossing, this has got to be a scam, have they told the deer the need to cross there? Is there a sign in the woods letting the deer know that there are cars crossing? Duck crossing? Really? Smack, sorry duck! Bump, here’s one of my favorites, how about you go out and fix the problem instead of putting a sign up to let me know to brace for impact. Do not drive into smoke, I’m still at a loss on this one, is this really a problem? SPEED LIMIT 7.5 MPH - huh? I think if we stop with the signs maybe we could put something back in the budget. Tank
