Talkin’ Trash I didn’t want to get involved. I already had enough on my plate. Grandson to raise…Businesses to run…Lawn to mow…Motorcycle to ride. I had plenty to do already. I didn’t have the time, nor the inclination, to mess with those bald-headed kids stricken by childhood cancer. Mostly, I think I believed, “If I ignore childhood cancer it won’t happen to those I love and care about. It will only happen to someone else’s kid.” All of that changed the day Doug Simmons walked into my office and asked me if I would help him do something to honor the memory of his grandson Ryder Jack Herring. You see, Ryder had recently lost his battle against this horrible affliction. Cheryl met Shirley (Ryder’s grandmother) and Elly (Ryder’s mom) and the next thing I know I am dragged kicking and screaming into the midst of many families with children suffering from cancer! I am TERRIFIED to get to know these children. There are too many variables - something might happen to one of them. Can my grandkids get cancer from associating with them? I tell Cheryl, “You can’t save the world!!! You can’t help everyone that comes to our door seeking help! I don’t want to get involved with this childhood cancer thing!” Cheryl said, “We don’t have to help everybody, but we ARE going to help these kids.” Guess what? I am involved. First it was Cheryl’s Birthday Bash/Ryder’s Army Toy Run. Next it was having the families over for our Independence Day
Celebration, and after that a Back-toSchool Sleepover with my grandkids. I soon learned the kids aren’t contagious. My grandkids didn’t catch anything. But do you want to know what DID happen?! I fell in love with these sick little children with their indomitable spirits. And their families became my family…just like you folks, My Biker Family. We CAN make a difference. Even if it is in just one child’s life. I know I am preaching to the choir because our biker community supports more charitable causes than any other faction of our society. September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Please, if only for a moment, remember these little ones. God Bless, and watch out for the cages. See you in the wind…. The Janitor
BANDANAS FOR BELLA Most of us who ride motorsickles have collected a multitude of bandanas throughout they years. In honor of Bella Leddy we are collecting bandanas, laundering them, and donating them to the kids with cancer. If you have any bandanas you would like to donate we would greatly appreciate them. You may drop them by our Vaping Kicks Ash stores located at 11215 N Garnett Rd in Owasso or 224 N Hwy 11 in Sperry. You can also give them to Cheryl or I when you see us. Thanks for your help!

The Ozark Mountains will soon be rumbling with the roar of motorcycles. Fayetteville, Arkansas will be hosting the 16th Annual Bikes, Blues & BBQ Rally from September 23-26. The first rally 16 years ago welcomed just over 300 riders. Last year, an estimated 400,000 people attended the rally from all 50 states and many other countries. The concept of hosting a rally began when former Fayetteville Police Chief, Richard Watson, purchased his first motorcycle and began attending rallies across the country. Recognizing the potential economic impact such a rally could have, he began sharing his vision with the President of the Fayetteville Chamber of Commerce and the owner of Jose’s Mexican Restaurant. They toyed with the idea for about six years. During that time, Jose’s began hosting a Bike Night to determine public and biker interest. Bike Night at Jose’s was so successful, the three presented the rally proposal to the Chamber. Bikes, Blues and BBQ, a motorcycle rally with a purpose, is an annual family-friendly event, where everyone is welcome. There are many activities that the whole family can enjoy including live music, a vintage motorcycle show, a huge car show, lawn mower pulls, and fireworks. While naturally boosting the local

I had a problem with everyone because I thought everyone had a problem with me. They did not. I thought everyone saw in me the same thing I saw in myself, worthlessness. They did not. But the problem was I knew the things I had done in my life and I knew the things I was still doing and I felt everyone could see that as well. They could not. All people could see was that I was self-destructing and more than once I heard “WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?!” It wasn’t until I “WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?!” was asked the exact same question in a much different way that something new Have you ever wanted to ask someone that? The average life expectancy for men was 47 years. Fuel for this motorcycle was sold in local drug stores. No gas stations yet! Only 14% of homes had any bathtub at all. Only 8% of the US homes had a telephone. The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph. More than 95% of all births took place at home. There were only 8,000 cars and only 144 miles of paved roads in all of America. The average US wage was 22 cents per hour. The average worker mad between $200 and $400 per year. Ninety percent of all doctors had no college education. Most women only washed their hair once a month. The American flag only had 45 stars. The population of Las Vegas, NV was only 30 people. Crossword puzzles, canned beer, and iced tea hadn’t been invented. Two out of every 10 adults couldn’t read or write. Only six percent of Americans were high school graduates. there one time. One trip up there will show you why I never want to go again. If you can imagine putting 1/3 of Los Angeles in a very small town you’ll get a pretty good idea of what this turns into. From the long lines and never ending traffic jams on both Main St and Junction that will eat and fry your stator (that’s the charging system for you non-mechanical types), to the way, way over crowded highways that roll out thru Black Hill. There are too many people with not enough experience to handle those kind of roads with that volume of traffic and even more riders with no patience to deal with the slow flow of traffic. Let’s not forget the ones that are rolling along soaking in the beauty of the area and not paying attention to the road. Welcome to I had a lot of people ask me if I was the commercialization of motorcycling! heading to Sturgis this year. My response The biggest traffic jam/mess you’ll ever “Not a chance in hell!” But why you ask? see, price gouging runs wild, not enough Well here you go. services to accommodate the masses. It’s something I never see myself doing Sturgis South Dakota, for 50 weeks of again. the year is a sleepy little town with a population of 6,883. A quaint little town Here are some of the statistics that I with two exits off of I-90. The kind of found on this year’s 75th Annual. Now little town that had it been anywhere these stats just represent the Sturgis else in the USA you most likely wouldn’t and surrounding area. Thirteen riders even know it existed. But for two weeks killed 157 injury accidents and 194 out of the year (even in an average “non injury” accidents. They don’t take non anniversary year), Sturgis (and into consideration all the wrecks that everything around it for miles and miles) happened on the way to and from the becomes the center of the world for the rally. Boy oh boy! Now add in somewhere motorcycling community, Mecca if you between 800,000 and 1.2 million people will, the one place that all motorcycle (I really don’t think they know how many riding people want to go at least once people were there). Sure sounds like fun and I guess if you ride, you should go to me! These are just a few things that make me not want to go back. My suggestion to anyone that would really like to go enjoy the Black Hills, try it in late May or early June or hold off until after the rally like late, late August of September. Yes, you’ll still have to deal with the 4 wheelers and RV’s but trust me, you’ll enjoy the ride a whole lot more and the price of everything is much cheaper. Tank

In 1922, the Shriners founded the first Shriners Hospitals for Children in Shreveport, LA. This health system has grown to 22 facilities the United States, Canada and Mexico. Through innovative pediatric specialty care, world-class research and outstanding medical education, the hospitals provide advanced care for children. Relying on the generous donations of Shriners and the general public, the Shriners Hospitals for Children provides the highest quality care without regard to a patient’s ability to pay. That is what this Poker Run was all about. And we witnessed Gordon Carlin distribute $3500 in prize money to several participants. Several thousand dollars was raised during this run in spite of heavy rains. We had a great time...we hope you will too at next year’s event!

GRATITUDE… the quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness. Writing this “thank you” seems inadequate when my gratitude for the support the biker community has shown at my Birthday Bash Ryders Army Toy Run is greater than these two words could ever convey. I can also attest to the gratitude of the families who were recipients of your donations and support by sharing a little information with you. One of the families we helped did not have the money to repair their air conditioning. Their child was very ill from chemotherapy and the heat made it even worse. Upon receiving the check they were able to get their air conditioning fixed and provide a more comfortable environment for their child who is fighting hard to beat cancer. When it comes to paying bills or saving your child’s life in almost every instance a parent will choose the latter. These families face exorbitant expenses, even with insurance. If they are a two parent home, one parent most often has to quit their job in order to take care of their
Oklahoma Biker the Riders Ragazine 38
child. If they are a single parent they have to rely on the system to help and we all know how insufficient that is. One family was facing foreclosure on their home. When they received the check from the benefit, they were able to get caught up on their house payments and pay a month in advance. An attendee from the toy run never imagined her child would be visiting the toy closet at the Children’s Hospital at St. Francis. She texted me to thank us for having the toy run and shared how the visit to the toy closet made her son smile and made his hospital stay a little more tolerable. The generosity continued after the toy run when 18 Wheels MA had their Back to School Ride. They not only provided school supplies to some area schools, they also provided and filled back packs with school supplies for some of the children battling cancer and their siblings. Kudos to 18 Wheels. Thank you to everyone. May you be blessed with God’s light and love! Cheryl Briggs

CHERYL’S BIRTHDAY BASH / RYDER’S ARMY TOY RUN / OLD SCHOOL SMOKERS BENEFIT SMOKE-OFF We have made an effort to thank everyone who helped make this such a successful event, but I am sure we have inadvertently missed someone. If we failed to include you, your business or organization we apologize in advance. It wasn’t intentional. We want to give a special thanks to all of the riders, and folks who participated in the parade. Your generous donation of toys helped restock the Toy Closets at both the Children’s Hospital at St Francis in Tulsa, and the Children’s Hospital at OU Medical Center in OKC. We also want to thank Channel 2 Works for You, Channel 8 Good Day Tulsa, and IHeart Radio for their help in promoting this event. Skiatook Journal you did an awesome job following up and explaining why a thousand motorcycles went down the mainstreet of Skiatook on a Sunday afternoon. Much love and appreciation to all of you who donated your time and money to make this event a success for the families with children suffering from cancer. Cheryl and I want all of you to know we love you, and we are proud of the Oklahoma biker community! And thank you to the Old School Smokers and Wrestling for a Cause for all of their hard work and generous contributions to this worthy cause. See ya next year! The Janitor

The Steel Horse Rally Board of Directors presented its first donation to a local charity, The General Darby Legacy Project, on Thursday, July 9, at 2 p.m. at Old Fort Harley-Davidson in Fort Smith. Dennis Snow, president of the Steel Horse Rally Inc. said “After an exceptionally successful inaugural event, we are honored to present our first charitable donation to the General Darby Legacy Project. This donation is from everyone who attended the first Steel Horse Rally. This first charitable donation holds an extra special significance because it honors the contributions of General Darby and the military, which the Steel Horse Rally is dedicated to, and it will also help improve the city of Fort Smith. The Steel Horse Rally Board of Directors has already started planning the 2nd Annual Steel Horse Rally which will take place April 29 & 30, 2016. The Steel Horse Rally Inc. Board of directors will be presenting checks to three other charities in the coming weeks. Opportunities are available for businesses and individuals who want to donate, become sponsors, and volunteer as part of the 2016 Steel Horse Rally.
