Some of The Top Influential People in Cannabis History - Stoner Lives
It's easy to forget that for many years, cannabis was considered illegal by law enforcement everywhere. Yet despite the legal obstacles and consequences faced by those who advocated its benefits and use, marijuana activists pushed past barriers and boldly worked towards a greener future where people around the world can reap natural rewards from God's great plant. Today, with an increasing number of states legalizing cannabis -- some decades ago and even longer-- our society is reaping more than just recreational perks: we're witnessing real progress in changing stigmas toward cannabis it all started because of these great people.
Godfather of Cannabis Research
Dr. Raphael Mechoulam
(November 5, 1930 - March 9, 2023)
A world-renowned organic chemist, Dubbed the "Godfather of Cannabis Research" Dr. Raphael Mechoulam made countless contributions to medicinal chemistry with his groundbreaking research into cannabis and the cannabinoids it contains - namely THC and anandamide. For over three decades he held a professorship at Hebrew University in Jerusalem while also conducting vast collaborative experiments that led to numerous life-changing discoveries within this area of science. Professor Raphael Mechoulam has been honored with international recognition awards for his pioneering work in medical cannabis. He was awarded the Heinrich Wieland Prize in 2004, an honorary doctorate from Complutense University in 2006, and Israel's prestigious prize for Exact Sciences, Chemistry in 2000. Moreover, Prof Marcel is a founding member of both the International Association for Cannabinoid Medicines as well as International Cannabinoid Research Society- leading organizations on Cannabis research worldwide.
Founder of NORML
Keith Stroup
In 1968, after graduating from law school and joining the federal Consumer Product Safety Commission, Stroup was inspired by consumer activist Ralph Nader's work. This influence led him to form a unique organization - one representing cannabis-using consumers throughout the United States. In 1970, Keith Stroup founded the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML) with $5,000 in seed money from the Playboy Foundation. Under his tenure as executive director until 1979, NORML saw 11 states pass decriminalization laws related to marijuana use. He took a break from cannabis law reform to act as an attorney advocating for artists and family farmers before returning in 1994 to join its board of directors before resuming his role as executive director again. Over the next decade he actively spoke out about marijuana policy reforms around America before stepping down from his position; however, still dedicated to advancing progressive change he continues working with NORML today.

Jack Herer
(June 18, 1939 – April 15, 2010)
Jack Herer, the beloved 'Emperor of Hemp,' is widely regarded as a hero in marijuana legalization circles. His 1973 head shop opening and 1985 publication 'The Emperor Wears No Clothes' helped to spark an ever-growing movement that has seen cannabis become accessible for many across multiple states. The book provided an extensive overview of hemp's beneficial qualities, such as medicinal use and converting it into more sustainable resources like fuel or clothing fabric. Thanks to his tireless efforts over decades, people today can reap the rewards of this ancient herb! Jack Herer, was a renowned activist and founder and director of Help End Marijuana Prohibition (HEMP) and was an outspoken proponent of cannabis decriminalization. His arguments centered around its holistic values; from renewable fuel to medicine and beyond. He advocated that the healing properties could be cultivated worldwide if only citizens were educated on this environmentally friendly crop.
Founder of Women Grow a Cannabis Networking Organization
Jane West
Jane West is making waves in the cannabis world. The internationally-recognized CEO is leading a revolution through her lifestyle brand and Women Grow, America’s largest female networking organization for cannabis professionals. Her achievements have not gone unnoticed; Inc Magazine crowned her “Most Widely Recognized Female Personality in Cannabis" while InStyle's 2019 Badass 50 list honored West as one of their top empowering women cutting through boundaries to make an impact globally. Jane West, the founder of her namesake cannabis brand, is on a mission to not only normalize the use of cannabis but to make the industry more inclusive for women. To accomplish this, 80% of West's company is owned by women and people who are racially diverse. Additionally, she has volunteered with several organizations such as Women’s Cannabis Business Network in order to help female entrepreneurs create national networks and support each other throughout their growth journey in the booming cannabis field.
Singer/Songwriter and Cannabis Activist
Willie Nelson
With a career spanning more than seven decades, Willie Nelson has become one of the most iconic figures in music. But this national treasure also accomplished something equally remarkable: fighting for cannabis legalization across America. He co-chairs NORML and authored his autobiography 'Roll Me Up and Smoke Me When I'm Gone,' detailing his journey with marijuana advocacy over the years! In 2015 he took it to another level by launching 'Willie's Reserve' - a line of premium cannabis products which are now available in Colorado, Washington, Las Vegas, Oregon, and California (the latest state added). Those passionate about social justice issues like weed reform – can look up to Willie as an inspiring leader who was never afraid to stand up for what’s right despite pressures from society or government authorities. In 2005 iconic Country music star Willie Nelson and his family helped to lead the charge for marijuana reform with their inaugural "Willie Nelson & NORML Benefit Golf Tournament". Following an arrest in 2010 for possession of marijuana, he took things one step further by creating the TeaPot party; a political movement that advocates taxing, regulating and legalizing cannabis.
Canadian Comedian, Actor, Musician and Cannabis Activist
Tommy Chong
Tommy Chong, considered a Marijuana VIP, is an iconic Canadian comedian who gained fame and success as part of the talented Cheech & Chong duo. The two became household names for their hilarious cannabis-inspired comedy skits that entertained audiences worldwide. Cheech & Chong achieved impressive success in the early 1970s with their iconic comedy albums. Four of these were nominated for a Grammy Award, and they eventually won Best Comedy Album at the 1973 ceremony for Los Cochinos! Additionally, Chong co-wrote and starred in seven feature films alongside his partner Cheech Marin to further solidify their spot as comedic legends. In 2003, Chong became the center of attention when the US Attorney for Western Pennsylvania Mary Beth Buchanan initiated Operation Pipe Dreams to uncover illegal drug traffic and users through businesses selling paraphernalia such as bongs. Her investigation cost over $12 million in resources from 2,000 law enforcement officers focusing on 55 companies operating online - one of which was Nice Dreams, Tommy Chong's company. After being found guilty of operating an illegal distribution network, Tommy Chong was sentenced to nine months in federal prison and a fine of $20,000. Along with the forfeiture of more than one hundred thousand dollars seized during his business' raid and loss of merchandise - all on top of other legal penalties - Mr. Chong served out his sentence at Taft Correctional Institution from October 8th, 2003 until July 7th, 2004. There he was cellmate with Jordan Belfort, who would go down in history as 'The Wolf Of Wall Street'. The two men formed a lasting friendship thanks largely to Tommy's mediation that helped inspire Belfort to write his memoirs.Cannabis activists like Jack Herer, Willie Nelson, Tommy Chong, and Keith Stroup have played a major role in paving the way for where we are today. Their tenacity, courage, and commitment to social justice have inspired countless people across America to fight for cannabis reform and legalization. Jane West, thanks to her leadership, female entrepreneurs now have access to networks that support them throughout their growth journey in the booming cannabis field. Last but not least is the Godfather of Cannabis Research and to who we dedicate this article. His recent passing brought an end to his reign but he will forever be remembered, especially in the cannabis community. His discovery and research helped lead to breakthroughs in the field and ultimately helped pave the way for legalization. Rest in peace and thank you for everything you've done Dr. Raphael Mechoulam.These iconic figures have not only left an indelible mark on our society but also helped create opportunities for others who seek success within this industry. Without these individuals, it’s hard to imagine what direction marijuana reform would be heading right now. We owe much of our progress so far in part due to these inspiring activists so next time you go to light up be sure to be thankful for their contributions.
