A MESSAGE FROM INTERIM HEAD OF SCHOOL NANCY PALMER P'12 Dear Oldfields Community,

We had many successes this past year— delivering a safe and healthy in-person experience, continuing the work towards a diverse, inclusive, equitable, and just community, and adding exceptional new programs such as the Arts Concentration Program and Winter Program while continuing to grow established programs like Riding and Academic Strategies. A highlight for me was watching the Oldfields’ Interscholastic Equestrian Association (IEA) Riding Team compete during their Regional Finals where they were named Champions for their zone.

What an honor it was to be present as Oldfields’ 155th school year came to a successful conclusion on a picture-perfect day on June 3. As always, Graduation was beautiful and bittersweet as students, faculty, and staff faced the inevitable change that the end of a school year brings. As I shared with you in May, after four years of excellent leadership, David Perfield announced his resignation as Head of Oldfields School effective June 30, 2022. David and Lisa made this difficult Nancy Palmer P’12 decision in order to return to New Hampshire to be closer to their extended families. ALUMNI WEEKEND 2022 Susie Hadden Lawrence ’65 and Jane Isdale Schaefer ’52

Coming Home By Jane Isdale Schaefer ’52 P’84 This spring I returned to Oldfields for Alumni Weekend to celebrate my 70th reunion (where did the time go?!). It was a beautiful picturesque day, and Anne Ragland Finney P’97 was kind enough to pick me up at the airport. When we reached the bridge, I knew I was “home.” Anne took me on a tour of the grounds. We went to Mr. McCulloch’s house (whom we fondly called “Pa”), down to the athletic fields, up to the barn, then up to the incredible indoor riding ring just past Jane House, Centennial, McCulloch Dining Hall, and finally the nostalgic drive up to Old House, which I must say looks so much better without the pool. The grounds looked wonderful, and it was so special to see the buildings freshly painted. I enjoyed time spent in the dining room eating with the girls and was impressed with the food and the helpful kitchen staff. Then on to some of the classrooms. Watching the lively interaction between the girls and the teachers, I felt the same feeling of family that was there when I was at Oldfields 70 years ago. The girls were friendly and eager to talk about what was going on in the School. They talked freely about

10

gender and pronouns, which was an eye opener for me. Times have changed! Saturday my daughter Greta, Class of 84, joined me as we went to the Celebration of Life in remembrance of Hawley Rogers. It was good to see Wendy and the Rogers children. We all enjoyed the eulogy given by Taylor Smith, Former Assistant Head and Former Head of School. The Alumni Memorial service up at Immanuel Church was very touching and sobering when I realized how many Oldfields girls had passed away over the last three years, including some of my classmates. The Friday cocktail party was one of the highlights of the weekend with the Green and White Spirits dressed in their mascot costumes welcoming us and getting us into the spirit with team pictures. Over the weekend, I was even able to help the Green Team find the Thing-a-ma-bob! I left reminiscing about the education and the self-esteem I gained at Oldfields. I hope the girls presently at Oldfields will remember this special time in their lives and will want to give back to our School so that other girls will have the opportunity to have the support and education Oldfields can give to each girl.

They are just some of the places our students experienced during May Program 2022! SUMMER 2022

Beloved Faculty Member Betsy Isaacs Says Farewell By Director of Stewardship Anne Ragland Finney P’97 At the end of the 2021-2022 academic year, after 43 years of dedication to Oldfields and its students, Betsy Isaacs P’05, ’08 retired from teaching. Former English teacher, math teacher, winner of two McColl Teaching Awards, as well as The Nancy I. O’Connor ’75 Excellence in Teaching Prize, and Chair of the Math Department, Betsy most recently served as Chair of the Math and Science Department. Both of Betsy’s daughters graduated from Oldfields, Jessie in 2005 and Annie in 2008, making Oldfields a family tradition indeed.

1972

An animal lover whose constant companion in and out of the classroom is her dog, Gizmo, Betsy’s skill and proficiency as a math teacher is equaled by her devotion to the student body. From popular advisor to long-time cross-country coach, from serving many years as Junior Class Dean to helping coordinate bake sales and planning the year-end Junior/Senior Outing, whenever the call goes out for an extra set of hands, Betsy is the first one to volunteer. It’s no wonder her students and colleagues love her so much!

Three icons—Maribeth Littlefield P’07, Betsy Isaacs P’05, ’08, and Dori Reigner P’03.

A few words from Betsy's students... “So often math can feel like such a daunting subject… You, Ms. Isaacs, made me feel confident and competent with math.” – Charelle James '88

“Mrs. Isaacs! You will forever be such an important part of my Oldfields experience. Beyond your miraculous ability to make math a less miserable and terrifying endeavor, you were a constant ray of sunshine. When I returned to campus many years after my graduation, seeing you in your classroom with your long blond braids, more than a couple of sweet rescued pups, and the way the girls walked out of math (math!) smiling was perhaps my greatest reassurance that Oldfields is still Oldfields.” – Adelaide Goldfrank ’96

“Oldfields is great because it has teachers like you, teachers who felt safe, who cared, who were our moms/dads away from home. You were all that. Mrs. Isaacs; you were our biggest supporter.” – Kwan Hansongkitpong Ross ’98

“You made my Oldfields experience what it was in its entirety. Thank you for all you did for me, my classmates, and the School.” – Allie Singer ’08 “Thank you for your never-ending patience and all the knowledge (and snacks!) you shared over the years. Your support and kindness really helped make Oldfields feel like a home away from home.” – Kasey Michlowitz ’20

Thank you, Betsy! Your legacy will live on at Oldfields. OLDFIELDS MAGAZINE
