SUPPORTINGOLDFIELDSSCHOOL ALL IN FOR OLDFIELDS

ABOUT At Oldfields, our programs are designed with girls in mind. We work with each girl to uncover her potential, bolster her natural abilities, and teach her how to overcome what she may perceive as limitations by providing experiences and lessons that challenge her to discover her inner voice, her abilities, and the power within her to develop her courage (to know anything is possible), humility (to lead with integrity, confidence, and sense of self), and largeness of heart (a knowing connection to others and sense of service to make the world a better place).

MISSION Oldfields School’s Mission is to embrace each student’s authentic self, educate through collaboration, empower the individual voice, and inspire confidence and continual growth, leading to a life of purpose.

For over 155 years, Oldfields’ dedicated faculty, in the spirit of our founder Anna Austen McCulloch, achieve this is the small classes where every girl is known and cared for; a unique schedule to allow for deeper study and reflection; an intimate community that has very intentional activities and experiences outside the classroom to develop the whole person.

Founded in 1867, Oldfields School, located in Sparks Glencoe, Maryland, is a boarding and day college preparatory school currently serving 100 girls in grades 8 through 12. The School is Maryland’s oldest active girls’ boarding school and is situated on more than 140 acres.

The history of Oldfields School is rich with innovation. Oldfields was the first girls’ school to introduce chemistry and physics into its curriculum and to have a formalized art program. In 1878, Oldfields pioneered one of the first riding programs in the country. Also as one of the earliest schools to provide athletics, in 1912 a gymnasium was built, one of the first at a girls’ school south of the MasonDixon Line. Much is owed to our founder, Anna Austen McCulloch, who upon moving to Sparks-Glencoe from Staten Island, felt the need to provide an education for her eight children, and it seemed logical to her to invite some of her relatives and a few local children to her classes. A firm believer in equal education for girls and boys, she was creating the foundation for the philosophy and traditions that Oldfields still embraces today.

HISTORY OLDFIELDSOF

Oldfields’ program has always been, and is still, designed to develop confident, well-rounded young women who are prepared to succeed in college and have a positive impact on the world beyond our campus.

An Oldfields girl is eager to learn, excited to lead, and driven to succeed. She is comfortable being who she is—even as she continues to evolve. Above all, she is kind, empathic, and inclusive. While these characteristics define the extraordinary qualities of our students, they also define the core of our community that upholds the motto of our school: Courage. Humility. Largeness of Heart.

WHO IS OLDFIELDSAN GIRL?

WHY OLDFIELDS?

At Oldfields School we believe that the power of an all-girls’ education is about possibilities, not limitations. We believe that a school where trust is intrinsic, kindness is inherent, and independent thinking is valued provides the greatest opportunity for growth and achievement. We believe that learning is as much a process as it is an outcome. We believe in the lifelong, joyful pursuit of personal excellence, not perfection. We believe that when students are engaged, challenged, and inspired, they excel in amazing ways. We believe in beautiful surroundings, genuine friendships, and boundless futures. We believe that empathy has a place in how we live our lives. Most of all, we believe that when a girl is valued for who she is as much as who we believe she can become—her opportunities are limitless.

Our signature experiential learning programs—Winter Program, May Program, Arts Concentration Program—provide students with the opportunity for immersive, hands-on learning opportunities related to their interests and passions.

We believe that the best learning happens in a space free from distraction and rich in opportunity, where students are known, heard, and encouraged to move outside their comfort zone and experience new levels of academic challenge. At Oldfields we encourage our students to ask questions, to take risks, to try, to fail, to succeed, to lead, to excel, and to grow into confident and critical thinkers. As a small school, we are able create unique immersive opportunities for each girl to achieve her academic goals. Here, learning means doing and it is not confined to four walls of a classroom. The result? Education with a deeper level of personal connection that opens doors and minds to bigger and broader opportunities for discovery.

A SMALL SCHOOL CREATES BIG OPPORTUNITIES.

BEING ABLE TO BE YOURSELF IS AMAZING.

The family-like sense of warmth and welcoming at Oldfields is unparalleled. Perhaps it is our location; or maybe it is simply our unwavering acceptance of one another. Oldfields encourages students to be their authentic selves and offers an extraordinary sense of inclusivity and acceptance to girls at a time in their life when they need it most.

The beauty of Oldfields is that you can arrive here as you are and focus on what you love, because who you are “supposed” to be doesn’t exist here. While we value each of our students’ diverse individuality, it is the shared deep-rooted sense of belonging that makes our community a family and our campus a home.

AN ALL-GIRLS’ EDUCATION IS LIFE-CHANGING

“ Girls at all levels of achievement in the single-sex schools receive a…benefit from the single-sex school environment in terms of heightened career aspirations—an effect unprecedented in any other portion of our study. ”

-Dr. Cary M. Watson, Stanford University, Sex Roles: A Journal of Research

At a time with so many outside influences defining who a girl should be, Oldfields provides a place free from that pressure—where girls can express themselves and focus on who they are and what passions they wish to pursue. Research tells us that young women in single-gender schools have stronger self-esteem, greater self-confidence, broader leadership opportunities, and higher aspirations. Nothing could better describe an Oldfields girl. As Maryland’s first all-girls’ boarding school, we have a long history of forging opportunities for young women. Every Oldfields girl is— and always has been—encouraged to find her voice and to use it with confidence. Our girls are empowered to take risks and work hard to develop the strength of compassion, integrity and intellect they will need in college and beyond.

OPPORTUNITIES

One of the best things about attending an all-girls school? Girls lead everything. There is something very powerful about this, as it establishes a mindset in our students that there are no limitations about what they can accomplish both during their time at Oldfields and beyond. At Oldfields, we understand that great leadership isn’t just about what you know— it’s about who you are and it’s why we prepare our girls to lead in a world where solutions require connections. Because of this, we place value on developing strength of communication, character, and accountability in our students through ongoing “micro-leadership” experiences that occur throughout their day: at morning meeting, in the classroom, through the arts, at sporting events. When more significant school leadership opportunities arise, girls are fully prepared to step into these positions with poise and confidence.

OUR VISION

For 155 years, Oldfields has been educating young women, giving them a school that becomes a home, surrounding them in a culture of kindness, preparing them to thrive with confidence in the wider world. As we strive to return to our prepandemic enrollment numbers, the support of alumni, parents, grandparents, and friends is as vital and necessary as ever.

Now more than ever, the world needs more Oldfields leaders. Leaders who are confident, competent, and kind. Leaders who are comfortable challenging and being challenged. Leaders who can communicate and connect with poise in this ever-changing world. It is our goal to continue to provide an amazing all-girsl educational experience that provides young women with the tools and skills needed to thrive beyond our campus.
