studebaker car show
page 5
THE STUDEBAKER CAR SHOW IS ONE OF THE MOST POPULAR CARS SHOWS WE’VE HELD AT OLD WORLD. The Studebakers have graced the streets of Old World many times over the years. With a reputation for quality and reliability, it’s hardly surprising that so many of these cars are still available to show. The first gasoline powered automobiles to be fully manufactured by Studebaker were marketed in August 1912, and with the last one rolling off the production line in March, 1966 their 50+ year history is a testament to the way cars were built in the old days. THE STUDEBAKER WAS ONE OF THE GREAT AMERICAN AUTOMOBILES that defined the post war era. When you consider the innovations Studebaker introduced to the automotive industry like streamline body styles, automatic chokes, and hill-holder clutches, it’s a mystery as to why Studebaker didn’t succeed. CAR ENTHUSIASTS WILL TELL YOU HOW THEY LOVED THE STYLING THAT STUDEBAKER bought to their cars, and whether it’s a Starliner, Starlight coupe, or maybe the Avanti, you’ll recognize the Studebaker instantly. Studebaker started as a wagon maker, but it wasn’t too long before they were one of the largest car companies in the world.

the legend of st. nicholas and his helper THE PATRON OF SAILORS, CHILDREN & GIFT GIVING. ST. NICHOLAS was born in a providence of Asia Minor on the 6th of December in the Fourth Century. Nicholas grew up to become Bishop of Myra. What little we know of his life comes to us through legends, which show him to be a generous man. Once he apparently gave three bags of gold to a poor man so that the mans three daughters would have dowries to marry. Northern Europeans represent Nicholas as a tall, kind-faced man with a long white beard, wearing a cape and and mitre of a Bishop, and carrying the crozier. He rides a white horse followed by a cart full of parcels to be left at different homes. Children have stuffed their shoes with hay, so the horse will have something to eat. St. Nicholas then leaves candy and small gifts in place of the hay. Many families in Europe used to welcome a representative of St. Nicholas into their homes on December 6th. This representative dressed as the bishop, talked with the children and reminded them to prepare for the coming of Jesus at Christmas. Later some people began giving Nicholas the name Father Christmas or Santa Claus.

According to an ancient Advent custom in Europe, Canada & South America, children placed little notes, addressed to the Christ Jesus, on their window sills on December 6th. These notes told of their desired Christmas gifts.
IN GERMANY & AUSTRIA, KNECHT RUPRECHT OF KRAMPUS ACCOMPANIED ST. NICHOLAS and watched out that all those kids who were bad got their appropriate gift, which was a stick, and the ones who did not listen to their parents at all, Knecht Ruprecht stuck them in a big sack and took them along. So it always paid to be mindful and good, because on Christmas Eve, the most wondrous thing happened when coming home from the 6 O’clock church service. The kids would gather in their homes and at the sound of a tiny bell they know the Christkind had come to their house to lite the Christmas tree and leave their gifts under the beautifully decorated tree. Each child also had a Christmas plate with candy, nuts & apples. Now together the family sang old traditional songs and rejoiced in the Birth of Jesus Christ.

HISTORIC CHRISTMAS MARKETS ARE HELD IN CITIES, TOWNS AND VILLAGES THROUGHOUT GERMANY AND AUSTRIA, and they invoke an enchanting festive atmosphere for those lucky enough to visit around this time. Christmas markets have a history that dates back to the early 13th century. A forerunner to the Christmas markets Germany has become famous for, was the ‘December market’ in Vienna, recorded in history as far back as 1294. IN MANY TOWNS IN GERMANY AND AUSTRIA, ADVENT IS USUALLY USHERED IN WITH THE OPENING OF THE CHRISTKINDELSMARKET – translated it literally means ‘Christ Child Market’ The markets celebrate Christmas during the four weeks of Advent. One of the earliest Christmas markets in Germany was the Dresden Strietzelmarkt, first held in 1434. Following many of the earliest traditions, the markets are usually held in town squares and surrounding pedestrian zones, and they sell food, drink and a host of hand crafted seasonal items. If you don’t like the commercial aspects of Christmas, a visit to the Christmas markets might help to restore a little bit of the magic, where Christmas gifts are not mass-produced but craftworks of real quality. THE TOWNS AND CITIES PROVIDE AN IDYLLIC SETTING FOR A ROMANTIC CHRISTMAS MARKET BREAK. Half-timbered buildings are festively lit and the aromas of mulled wine out of the local vineyards and cinnamon permeate the air at traditional Christmas markets. Guests can snuggle up at cosy hotels and the Christmas shopping is friendly and relaxed. The region’s beautiful cities captivate visitors with their rich history, labyrinthine old quarters, medieval market squares and striking cathedrals. Buildings steeped in history are illuminated by thousands upon thousands of fairy lights, while the aroma of gingerbread wafts through the air. ONE OF THE HARDEST DECISIONS YOU’LL HAVE IN GERMANY IS DECIDING WHICH MARKET TO VISIT, but in Huntington Beach the decision is much simpler, visit the SWEA Christmas Market – Old World, held in our Festival Hall and outside patio area on Sunday November 24th this is one of the most popular, and most closely resembles a real Christmas market. Stocked with beautiful hand crafted gifts, ornaments, candles, decorations, figurines, paintings, clothes, blankets, and so many other unique offerings, as well as Swedish food and drink and festive carols.

THE DRESDNER STOLLEN, A TRADITIONAL GERMAN CHRISTMAS CAKE, has been popular worldwide for centuries. The Stollen symbolizes baby Jesus in a cradle wrapped in linen. Making of the Stollen requires more attention than traditional doughs with yeast. It was developed in Sachsen (Saxon) where winters were cold and indoor room temperatures were lower than seen today. Traditionally the ingredients were brought to room temperature prior to baking, often the ingredients were moved to a warm room the night before. While room temperatures are higher nowadays, it is still advised to have the ingredients at room temperature. Happy Baking!

PUT FLOUR INTO A BAKING BOWL AND MAKE A PIT IN THE MIDDLE; ADD THE CRUMBLED YEAST WITH 2 TBSP SUGAR AND SOME MILK INTO THE PIT; WITH SOME FLOUR WHISK IT TO A “PRE-DOUGH”, COVER IT WITH A KITCHEN CLOTH AND KEEP IT AT A WARM PLACE FOR 40-50 MINUTES. MIX FLOUR AND PRE-DOUGH WITH REMAINING MILK AND SUGAR, WARM BUTTER, LEMON PEEL, SPICES AND SALT AND WHISK IT REALLY GOOD UNTIL THE DOUGH PEELS AWAY FROM THE INSIDE BOWL WALL. BOIL WATER AND SCALD RAISINS AND DRY THEM WITH A KITCHEN CLOTH OR PAPER. ADD RAISINS, CURRANTS, CANDIED ORANGE AND LEMON PEEL AND ALMONDS TO THE DOUGH – KNEAD THEM INTO THE DOUGH AND FORM A BALL OUT OF IT; COVER IT AGAIN AND LET IT REST FOR 30-40 MINUTES, DOUGH NEEDS TO RISE. AGAIN, KNEAD THE DOUGH VERY GOOD, AND LET IT RISE FOR ANOTHER 30-40 MINUTES, THEN FORM IT INTO A STOLLEN. PREHEAT OVEN TO 190-200 DEGREES C (375-400 F). GREASE A BAKING TRAY WITH BUTTER AND PUT THE STOLLEN ONTO IT, LET IT BAKE FOR 70-90 MINUTES UNTIL THE SURFACE IS GOLDEN BROWN; IF YOU SEE THAT IT GETS BROWN TO EARLY COVER IT WITH ALUMINUM FOIL OR GREASED PARCHMENT PAPER. WHEN THE STOLLEN IS DONE, BRUSH BUTTER ONTO THE SURFACE. AND SPRINKLE FIRST WITH COARSE SUGAR THAN WITH A MIX OF VANILLA SUGAR AND POWDERED SUGAR – DONE!
