ou know how you always have that special place in your memories, the place where all the beautiful moments in your childhood with your parents happened, where you made major decisions that shaped your life into what it is now? Well, that’s what this house has been to me.

THEN

I will never forget when my parents and I first saw this place in 1982. It was nothing but the foundation and frame. It had begun as a project for a gentleman who had backed out of the sale and was being sold as a work-in-progress for a new owner to take over. My parents jumped at the idea of being able to shape this brand new house to their own taste. In 1982 their plan was to have this house become their United States home, since dad had been working overseas for Chevron in Guatemala where I was born. NOW

The building of the house was finished in May of 1983. My mom was fascinated with the color peach. I remember Easter week in 1983 picking everything in that color— from carpet to wallpaper, window coverings to the furniture from Strouds in Harlingen. The interior of this house remained frozen in time literally until April of 2020. Both my parents passed away while living at that house— dad on April 19 of 2019 and mom on April 18 of 2020. The era of memories in this, my beloved house had ended, or so I thought at first…. THEN

I had been living and working in Dallas as a real estate agent and an Interior Designer Consultant. Sometime had passed after my parents had died before I arrived in Harlingen from Dallas to arrange my parents’ things in Harlingen— which included the sale of this property. When I opened the front door and entered my childhood home— this crazy thought came to my mind of selling my home in Dallas, moving to the Valley and restoring this house. And so, its second life began. NOW

My main focus was to not change the floor plan or knock down walls. I wanted to preserve the original, beautiful, simple floor plan it had, and transform it into a fusion of my taste and my furnishings from my house in Dallas combined with the beauty of my mom’s taste and style of 1983, then blend it together—making it look it look seamless. Well, that’s what the home on 2810 Mariposa Lane is today. It is a place where old heirlooms and furniture of yesterday and modern state of the art comforts have become one… my beloved home for years to come.

Entering via the quirky round door sets the tone set for experimental design philosophies the architect was exploring when designing it as his home in the 1970s

A light-filled family home in Cape Town celebrates its modernist heritage with a sensitive restoration and mix of handpicked vintage finds and contemporary interpretations. Located to the left of the entrance doorway, the kitchen was partly reclaimed from a ceramic studio, where the architects/ owner’s wife Helene Elliott worked. To make new sense of the space, a wall was built to create a kitchen courtyard.

“The original kitchen was very simple, and the house has Scandinavian influences, so we wanted to reflect that by using a simple, clean beech wood for the kitchen table, shelves and bay window inlay and elsewhere in the home.” says Michael.

The kitchen needed updating and was reimagined without losing modernist qualities. The inclusion of yellow ceramic tiles on the splashback connects to others used in the bathrooms in the house.

The stairs behind the kitchen lead to the atrium, consisting of a lounge and dining area, with a second set taking you to the master bedroom above the kitchen. The house’s multiple levels resulted from the architect’s decision to accommodate the plot’s sloping landscape rather than excavating to level Michaelit. and Claire have collected artworks and modernist inspired furniture and objects, but acquiring a home with similar references compelled them to invest in carefully chosen vintage pieces to complement their collection.

Shipping Container Homes Pros, Cons & Costs Written by Luke Hunter Magnificent Homes

C ontainer homes are exactly what they sound like; homes made from the steel shipping containers that you see carrying goods everywhere on trains, trucks, and ships. From these giant Lego blocks, people are building homes of all shapes and sizes.

Shipping containers are generally available in 10ft, 20ft, and 40ft. The smallest shipping container can provide about 100 square feet of floor space for a shipping container home. Eight larger containers together can make a two-story house at about 1400 square feet. Hundreds of container micro-apartments together can make a huge apartment building.

Why are shipping containers being used to make homes, studios, cabins, and offices? Well, with about 14 million ‘out-of-service’ containers in the world, there are lots of them available. And playing with giant blocks has a definite appeal! 44 Fall 2022 olé decor Magnificent Homes

Besides trendiness, interest in container homes is also part of a wider interest in saving money with prefabricated and modular homes. Many potential homeowners are looking for lower construction and maintenance costs. There is also a perception that container homes are contributing to recycling. Could a container home be a good choice for you? Here are some pros and cons to consider. Many shipping container homes are available as prefabricated modular homes, making construction time shorter. Some companies advertise delivery within 10 weeks! Most of the building code inspections are done at the factory, which makes things simpler and quicker. Or if you are designing a custom home or building a do-it-yourself project, the container gives you a fun prebuilt structure to work with.

45olé decor Fall 2022

A worldwide system exists for moving containers around. Once they reach your site, they are relatively simple to set in place on a prepared foundation. Most of the work is completed on a factory floor for a fixed price. Delivery to the site, site preparation, foundation, assembly and utility connections are the only variable costs. That said, container homes are not always less expensive. Estimates vary, and some put the savings at 5-10%, depending on what you’re comparing against.46

The environmental appeal of a container home is the idea that you are re-using a leftover product of the shipping industry to make a home. This can be a good thing, but as we will see, it’s not always true or the best thing.

Some of the advantages, like short construction time and predictable pricing, are the same for all prefabricated and modular homes, not just those made with shipping containers. But container homes benefit uniquely from the worldwide infrastructure built to move shipping containers. Even container home skeptics admit they can be useful where local building expertise is lacking or for emergency shelters that can be moved easily. In these scenarios, the versatility of container transport is a huge advantage.

Fall 2022 olé decor Magnificent Homes

Container homes are often marketed as being environmentally friendly because they are said to be made from used containers, thus conserving metal resources. There are lots of old shipping containers out there, no longer in circulation, and repurposing them into homes has a strong appeal. But is a container home really the best use of a container, from a sustainability perspective? Many wouldYoudisagree.mightlove to have a container home because you like the idea, the look, the chance to play with blocks in a DIY design, or the quick delivery time for a manufactured model. But don’t assume it will cost less or that it’s necessarily more environmentally sustainable.
