PHOENIX Written By Chris Sias

Photography By Adrian Llaguno

T

o rise like a phoenix from the ashes means to emerge from a catastrophe stronger, smarter, and better for it. This expression is based on a story that goes back thousands of years. The phoenix is a mythical bird from Greek mythology. It was a feathered creature of great size with talons and wings, its plumage radiant and beautiful. The phoenix lived for 500 years before it built its own funeral pyre, burst into flame, and died, consumed in its own fiery inferno. Soon after, the mythical creature rose out of the ashes, in a transformation from death to life.

The story of the Phoenix is an appropriate metaphor for this project. After a devastating fire destroyed their previous residence, the owners decided that their new home would rise from the literal ashes of the previous. Not coincidentally, the new structure’s footprint shares much of the footprint of the previous, but that is where the similarities end. The house is situated along an arroyo and as such, every design decision made, takes the water into consideration. The result is a spatial arrangement that takes full advantage of the views of the water. The layout takes a cue from the past and recalls the idea of the “piano nobile” (noble floor) from classical Italian architecture. The piano nobile is the principal floor of a substantial house. It is typically located on what less-noble people (like me), refer to simply, as the second floor. (The classical Italian ground floor was reserved for more utilitarian, service-oriented, purposes and not entertaining). 16

Winter 2020 olé decor

Appropriately, the execution of this home is not a classical architectural revival piece; however, this nod to classical architecture was the single most important design decision and drives the overall form and function of the entire structure. Arranging the primary entertainment and living spaces above the first floor elevates the views above the tree line and gives the house a strong visual connection to the water. The ground level features more of the private and utility spaces such as guest bedrooms, a media room and laundry room. The use of dark clay brick at ground level contrasts the light plaster above, reinforcing the idea of a light upper story with a solid base, and “grounds the building to the ashes storey from which it came. The floor plan is stretched parallel to the arroyo maximizing opportunities to connect the interior spaces with views of the water.

olĂŠ decor Winter 2020

17

Living Design

Though classical ideas inspired the spatial arrangement of the home, this piece of architecture is definitely of its time and place. This is a 21st century home, built with 21st century technology, located in the Rio Grande Valley and does not pretend to be anything less. The selection and arrangement of exterior elements is modern yet restrained, and the selection of the finish materials is done with regional considerations such as the hand fabricated copper panels on the main entry façade, and the masonry screen wall along the east side of the house. The copper will be allowed to develop patina naturally over time and will be a testament to its place as it naturally ages along the banks of the arroyo. The masonry screen wall is of a type of masonry construction that pays homage to the regionalism of the Rio Grande Valley. Continuing along the east side, large expanses of glass capture the views and make a strong connection to the water and outdoors. The hurricane-rated, and impact resistant glass is shielded from the hot Texas sun by a deep roof overhang. 18

Winter 2020 olĂŠ decor

This overhang defines a wonderful patio space that runs the full width of the house, making the outdoors an accessible and enjoyable space, despite the harsh Texas heat. Along the west façade, windows are purposefully minimized in order to reduce heat gain. Operable windows are arranged in such a way as to capture the prevailing south east breeze. When weather permits, this is a passive way to keep the house’s indoor temperature regulated. The south façade features one of the houses most daring elements. The glass box that dramatically cantilevers from the wall is the master shower where one can enjoy “uninhibited” views of the water and surroundings. Thoughtful sandblasting of the glass and the home’s secluded location make such a feature possible, and though it took some convincing to move forward with such a provocative element, it has quickly become one of the owner’s favorite features of the house. A discretely designed solar water heating system provides plenty of hot water for the shower and all plumbing fixtures.

olé decor Winter 2020

19

Living Design

In addition to the solar water heating, other 21st century elements that cannot be seen are a continuous weather barrier membrane, continuous outboard rigid insulation, spray foam insulation, and a roof material with a high reflectivity index. These often overlooked elements, along with the building’s strategic orientation and use of windows, keep the house cool with minimal need for air conditioning. Now that’s modern architecture!

Entering the house is a rich experience. A Japanese influenced rock garden and board formed concrete planter greet guests as they approach the front door. Upon reaching the door, your eye is drawn up a rain chain and to the nicely detailed soffit at the underside of the entry canopy. You notice the faint smell of cedar above and can appreciate the artisan quality of the copper paneling from this vantage point. The single globe light fixture to the side of the door is an understated touch and works to soften the overall composition of the entry. Lastly, you notice a thin strip of glass that separates the planter from the copper paneling and upon entering you become fully aware that the planter extends into the interior of the house, blurring the boundary between inside and outside, as you are met with a direct view to the banks of the arroyo beyond.

20

Winter 2020 olĂŠ decor

The interior spaces feature natural materials such as exposed structural wood lam beams, oak floors, and a stone fireplace. The lighting is modern and tasteful with all the decorative lighting selected by the Owner including the amazing George Nelson light fixtures which define the dining and kitchen areas. Other playful design features include a single contrasting ebony stair tread, a nod to the way the owner prefers to wear her fingernails. This tread extends to the outside of the house and becomes a deep windowsill creating another level of depth on the façade, and provides a beautiful shadow line against the copper.

This residence is more than just a home. It stands where not long ago, laid ashes and rubble. It is a testament to the owner’s spirit and to the importance of place. I’d say the phoenix is alive and well.

Private Escape

On the South Texas Space Coast Written By Tina Garbo Bailey

I

t was 1962 - the population of South Padre Island was 314. It would be more than a decade before the Queen Isabella Causeway was built. James Bond was making his debut in Dr. No. Beach Music was the rage and it was also the year that the Beatles made their first recording, Love Me Do. John Glenn was tapped for his historic space flight while NASA set its aim for the moon. Construction began on the 1915 Gulf Boulevard beach house.

24

Fast forward to 2020...open up your sunroof to smell the salt air and feel the gulf breeze in your hair as you drive across the Queen Isabella Causeway. Turn left on Padre Boulevard and next take a right on East Palm and your destination will be on the left. The beach house at 1915 Gulf Boulevard has come full circle with plenty of modern conveniences. The property is perfect for a family or a group in search of a relaxing, team-building facility. Look for the surf wall, the whimsical whale and other exterior, nautical murals that distinguish the beach house. You have arrived!

Winter 2020 olĂŠ decor

According to Shamrock Builders’ Scott Finney the original builder remains a mystery. Scott is very passionate about having preserved as much of the original structure as possible in collaboration with owners Hock Yong and Chia Lin Chiang in order to restore and expand one the of first beach houses ever built on the island. It is one of the coolest places to stay on South Padre and it is literally built at the highest elevation on the island. Scott says that the house was extremely well built.

olĂŠ decor Winter 2020

The three-foot-wide soffits are rarely found on newly constructed homes and cast ample shade throughout the day. The low-slung soffits along with the thick walls keep the temperature of the structure very pleasant, an attribute noted by Scott during the building process. All of the electrical, climatization, and plumbing systems have been updated. The garage, added in the 1970s along with the carport, presented an opportunity for Chia to dream about expansion.

25

Magnificent Homes

Scott laughed when he recalled that it was extremely difficult to bulldoze the breakwater from part of the double lot for the renovation. He said that he is used to “building things, not taking them down. The remaining portion of the iconic decorative cinder-block surf wall was designed in 1962 to be a barrier and to greet guests entering from the Gulf Boulevard side of the property. The exterior siding is composed of painted, rusticated, roman brick. To help protect the interior, an outside shower was built for rinsing off sand from the near by beach.

26

Winter 2020 olĂŠ decor

Leave your stress at the door! The exterior walls are fortress thick. Guests enter and gain access to the self-contained luxury. Quietude abounds once inside this Gulf Boulevard property. Each room is well insulated and extremely peaceful. The house unfolds from a newly located open-concept kitchen and living area into secluded guest quarters. Relax in the common spaces that overlook the private outdoor sports court. The original terrazzo floor has been retained in the main living spaces and the existing interior walls are made of a soothing, oversized, clay brick with ample mortar joints. The original 12” tongue and groove yellow pine ceiling still graces the great room and the southwest bedroom. According to Scott: “It is like stepping back in time” when you enter that room.

Magnificent Homes

One completely original, white tile bathroom exists on the ground floor. The kitchen counter tops are made of easily maintained quartz and the attractive tile backsplash is a nod to the original surf wall. There are nine bedrooms and five bathrooms tucked away in the North and South wings of the house. Each bedroom is appointed with comfort, simplicity, and easy maintenance in mind. What was once a breezeway has become an interior game room.

There are plenty of televisions if your favorite game is on. There is an on-suite bedroom, a favorite of the owners, that is perched at the top of the spiral staircase and boasts a private balcony. At the bottom of the staircase is a convenient and centrally located dry bar and laundry room that leads to all exterior spaces. Grab your martini - shaken, not stirred, and head outside for a little fun in the sun or moonlight. 28

The property owners are world travelers and know how valuable it is to have the feeling of having a home to return to after exploring. Enjoy your own private park. Anyone care to putt on the green? Shoot a few hoops on the court or in the pool. Have your own World Cup on the turf. Let the kids play on the private swing set. Care for a dip in the year-round swimming pool? Take a turn on the water slide or relax in the secluded jacuzzi.

There are lounging areas and ample opportunities for leisure. Close by, there is an access connecting you to the exterior staircase and rooftop deck. A 360 degree vista awaits you, perfect for viewing the stars, sunsets, and future rocket launches. Become a part of the long legacy of 1915 Gulf Boulevard on South Padre Island. Here, there is something for everyone.

A Home Office Made for Success H

ave you recently started working from home? It used to be that saying you work from home carried a negative connotation. Working from home is now an unplanned requirement for many who never had to do so before. Because of the many changes to our way of life, working from home no longer implies a lack of either professionalism or success.

32

Winter 2020 olĂŠ decor

Why you need a Dedicated Home Office When you work from home, it may feel difficult to keep your work life separate from your home life. Sitting at the dining room table to work makes you feel like you never leave your job. You need a dividing line between your work and home. A makeshift home office does not work well for the long term. A dedicated office space is the solution. Typically, walls and a door create a defined area, but they are not necessary. A bookshelf, chair, or other piece of furniture can serve as a demarcation point to keep you in work mode.

Having a home office environment separate from the rest of your home promotes discipline. It is also essential to boost your productivity. A separate office space helps remove any distractions from elsewhere in the house. If you are a small business owner, a home office can also provide tax advantages. You will be able to deduct part of your utilities, repairs, and depreciate the part of your home used for your office. Taking advantage of unused space and using it as an office or building a home office addition will also increase the value of your home. olĂŠ decor Winter 2020

33

Indoor / Outdoor Living

Where to put your home office If you have one, use a room that Is large enough to hold a desk, chair, and computer equipment with a door that can be shut to separate work life from home life. You can convert a guest room into a dual-purpose space. It can be an office most of the time and a guest room when you have friends or family come to visit. You might also turn an unused formal living or dining room into a home office. For privacy, install a sliding barn door. You might also hang curtains over the doorway or use folding screens to create a divider.

When space is an issue, a standard closet can be outfitted with a built-in desk with shelving at either end. Simply close the doors at the end of the day to make a break between work and home. Turning an empty loft space into your home office is another creative solution. It can do double duty as a classroom area or homework station for your children too. Maybe you have room to enclose part of a porch or a corner of a large laundry room. You can convert a small garden shed into a home office “away” from home for those who may need to meet with clients. All of these are great ways to take advantage of unused space.

34

Winter 2020 olé decor

What to put in your home office Working from home does have its benefits. It enables you to create the office space you desire. You get to choose everything that goes into your office space. When you are in a happy, comfortable environment then you will be more productive. The basic items you need for your home office are a desk, a chair, your computer, and a light source. Keep your office space well organized to keep your mind organized as well. Having a disorganized desk will keep you disorganized in your work and add more stress. If you need storage, build or add bookcases. Your desk or table should be least 29 inches in height from the floor to the top of your work surface. Your desk chair needs to be adjustable, easily movable, and provide lumbar support for your lower back.

It is a good idea to invest in a good quality headset to use when you have video conference calls. Relying on the microphone and speaker in your computer can result in poor sound quality and an annoying echo. Another must have for your home office is plenty of indirect natural light so you can easily read papers and see physical objects. Indirect lighting means lights that are not directly in your field of view or reflecting off your computer monitor. This prevents strain on your eyes which can result in headaches. Find a good desk lamp for those days when there is not enough natural light.

Indoor / Outdoor Living

How to decorate your home office When you create a workspace in your home, make sure that it inspires you to want to use it and allow you to get down to business. You want a space that is stylish, functional, and reflects your personality. Hang art that inspires you. Art energizes a space and motivates you. Keep things in your office which make you smile or make you happy. Even though you are working, your space does not have to look utilitarian. The more creature comforts you add to your workspace, the better you will feel while working. If you sit near a window, the best placement for your monitor is perpendicular to the window. Sitting with your monitor in front of the window results in too much contrast between the light from outside and the monitor screen.

36

If you sit with your back to the window, the light will reflect off your monitor and cause too much glare on the screen. Add a table lamp and a comfortable chair to sit in when you need to think. Place a plant on the table to bring nature inside, help you feel calm, and to clean the air. Add an area rug underfoot for texture, pattern, visual interest, and to absorb sound. Bring furniture pieces and décor from other parts of the house into your office. A mix of vintage and modern makes your workspace feel warm, inviting, and personal. Choose colors that you love instead of what is trendy. Colors that draw you in and speak to you will encourage you to do your best work. Your dedicated home office can be as simple as a desk and chair in an unused corner of your home, or as elaborate as a new room addition with all the amenities of an outside office.

Winter 2020 olé decor

Results of creating a dedicated home office Jobs and businesses that let you work from home are here to stay. When you work from home, you gain flexibility. Your commute is the length of your hallway so you spend less time traveling and you can get more work done. Having your own home office gives you better work-life balance, increased productivity from being better able to focus, and less stress. Working from home also means that you will learn to rely on self-motivation, self-discipline, focus, and concentration. By keeping a positive mindset and creating a home office that you love to spend time in, you can do a great job and enjoy the benefits that go along with working from home.

BLESSED WITH ART

An Eye For Detail

A

nnel Lilly was born in Veracruz, Mexico, and is currently living in McAllen, TX, with her husband and three kids. As a little girl, Annel always admired fine art. She could stare at a painting for a long while, trying to explain to herself how the painter did it. This kindled a great desire to learn the skill, but the circumstances were never in her favor. However, nothing stopped her artistic mind from exploring and experimenting with drawing, making sculptures out of mud, illustrating kids’ stories and coloring them with Kool-aid , and painting on paper with color extracted from fruits, coffee, tissue paper, and her sister’s makeup and nail polish, of course! Later on, on her teenage years, a Doctor in town soon noticed her talent and asked her to make some illustrations to display in her Clinic. That was her first commissioned work at 16. At age 21, Annel came across a Thomas Kinkade painting. She was amazed by the small cozy cottage with a warm light coming through the windows reflecting on the outside garden scenery at twilight. The desire to learn how to paint something like that was overwhelming, and it translated into a very sincere and heartfelt prayer. “God, I implore you to help me paint like that!” 42

Winter 2020 olé decor

A decade later, she tried acrylics for the first time without any instruction or training and “failed” her first painting. A few more years passed before she tried again, this time with more determination, because she never forgot what she felt when she uttered that prayer. Her prayer and wish were granted, she just needed to keep going and she did. Her new painting was an imitation of “A Quiet Evening” by Thomas Kinkade, and, after many hours of work, her painting was incredibly good! She hasn’t stop painting since then. More than two decades later, she is very grateful for all the artists from YouTube that helped her by generously sharing their knowledge, stories, and experiences, which taught, enriched, and motivated her to be an artist and fulfill her heart’s desire. Her family and friends have always encouraged and supported her to pursue her dream.

INSPIRATION “There is beauty in all of God’s Creation”, she always says as she finds her inspiration in a ray of light that shines over any object in the shadows, on every droplet of dew falling from flowers or fruit, and on live flowers or dead ones pressed in an old book. Her source of inspiration can be a person, an old car, a mountain, a building, a cupcake, almost everything! But her favorite things to paint are eyes, still life, and scenery. “Sorry, I can’t choose just one!” she says. “I’m that kind of person that tastes all the flavors in a chocolate box”. The way that she perceives the feelings in the eyes that show a person’s soul, or in a sweet expression of an animal, and the abstract mess of colors, is outstanding! “An artist sees art even when her eyes are closed, thinks art, breathes art, tastes art, hears art, and gives art,” says Annel.

STYLE AND INFLUENCES Realism is her favorite style, using oils, acrylics and mixed media to bring life to the canvas with happy and vibrant colors with some notes of romanticism representing her well. She is comfortable painting on a 3-inch shell to a mural covering a whole room and making kids happy. Her admiration for the works of William-Adolphe Bouguereau has caused her to try portraits. The creative mind of her compatriot Octavio Ocampo had cause a great impression in her as well.

Art should cause people to feel, and I want my art to cause joy, good, blissful, passionate, and pleasant feelings.

~ Annel Lilly

In May 2019, she went public on Facebook, showing her work, and three months later she participated in “ La Fiesta De Las Palmas” at the Convention Center in McAllen, where she had her first commissioned work, to paint Miss Pharr Texas 1949! What a privilege it was! The 70 year old pictures were faded and in poor condition, but that didn’t stop Annel. After two months she delivered the painting and the happiest words an artist wants to hear were pronounced! I love it! It’s just like I remember, you used the perfect colors! Thank you! 44

Furthermore, she participated in charity events for Children’s Advocacy Center of Hidalgo and Starr Counties, with Hadassah, a Jewish non-profit organization for woman’s health. She has also given free art lessons to homeschoolers in Hope Organization of RGV. She donated her time to paint a mural of Noah’s Ark and Ocean life at a church in McAllen. Besides art, Annel and her husband Matt, do photography, she is a Photoshop master and has a passion for restoring and bringing to life old pictures that are treasures about to be lost forever. In addition, she is a natural musician and plays guitar, ukelele and piano. Music plays a special part of her painting time.

Annel’s works are now displayed at the Laguna Madre Art Gallery in Port Isabel and soon at the Hinovations Art Gallery in McAllen for a charity event in collaboration with artists for Hope, Healing, and Justice for the Children’s Advocacy Center. She continues creating new pieces that you can find By Annel Lilly on Facebook and Instagram. She is currently working on a law enforcement officer’s portrait and a peaceful landscape of La Huasteca Potosina. Above all, she is grateful to God, family, and friends for the opportunity to do what she loves and thrilled to see what the future will bring.
