HOME

Hi, my name is Dariush. I arrived in the UK when I was seventeen in the back of a lorry, confused and frightened. I didn’t even know what a passport was, let alone why I might need one. When I got to the UK my asylum question got rejected. I was evicted from my temporary accomodation and became homeless. My life is not in my hands, It’s in the hands of the British and the Iranian governments. You don’t know what a small gesture means to a refugee. Even just a smile can mean so much...

6. IMPACT ON WIDER SCALE

LEGEND Routes VISITOR/RESIDENT REFUGEE

Local Worker -

I believe human beings at the end of the day are all the same. We should be more empathetic with each other. I do my bit, I cook on Sunday for about 30 people and I give the food to the local church. Personally, I would not have anything against hosting refugees. I think we should all begin opening borders or at least relax them.

Local Worker -

I will not express myself in regards to the refugees. This country is falling apart because we are welcoming too many people. Furthermore refugees have a completely different culture to us and would not like to live the same way we live. It would be very dangerous to host many refugees in the warehouse. It would be a disaster!

Local Artist -

‘I commute every day from South London. I know little about the refugee crisis. Just what I hear from the news. I would be rather sympathetic to have refugees next door but I don’t live here, I am not a resident so I would not be able to give you a truly personal answer.‘ ‘I am very interested in your proposal. I would support it fully. My personal work relates to these themes too. However you should really begin questioning the social glue of your project. Many people around here would find it odd. You should contact associations who have been working with refugees for many years.’

Canal Visited by tourists/Londoners

The Regent’s canal and river Lea have been renovated in the past years and are now flooded with locals and tourists especially during the weekends. The cycling and walking path, stops a few hundreds meters before the warehouse. Could this path possibly be integrated in our proposal and continue to branch the centre out into the city and vice versa?

Olympic Facilities Used by athletes/tourists

The Olympic development has brought many new activities to the area. The flourishing neighborhood, is unfortunately created for and used by wealthy social class while segregating the post-industrial area across the river Lea. How could we bridge this gap? The Victoria&Albert museum and the Sadler’s Wells, as well as UCL and other educational institutions are moving to the area. Could our proposal be part of this new cultural quarter?

Bromley-by-Bow Lived by new residents

Due to the Olympic development many other residential buildings are popping up around and in between the post-industrial area. How would the new locals react to the Exchanging Room being build next to their new homes? Could the co-operative’s activities in some way provide services for the local neighborhood?

4.Canteen & Kitchen

5. Meeting Room

The exchanging room is a space for both incoming refugees and locals. The main entrance leads towards a museum of immigration. A space dedicated to the exposition and archive of art, music, literature, data, stories and history related to current and past immigration flows. The museum is designed to produce confrontation via interactive performances and accessible information. The residents of the centre will themselves work in the museum, facing incoming visitors, producing face to face interaction.

Refugees from different backgrounds will reside during their initial arrival in adjacent rooms at the first and second floor of the centre. One unit will host four beds. Four units will share a toilet block and comprise a single flat. The units will be accessible through walkways cantilevering on either side of the pallet racking structure.

The self-learning wall will be equipped with touch screens that will allow visitors to deepen their knowledge and understanding of current and past immigration flows. In case of further interest the visitor can possibly press a button, calling residents of the hub; directly posing questions to refugees, beginning an indirect communication through phone conversation.

The canteen will act as meeting point as well as first reception area. Here new residents will be able to get initial information on the ‘Exchanging room’ as well as receiving primary aid as food and clothing.

The meeting room will be mostly used by the co-operative for informal discussions among all the parties, internal and external members of the ‘exchanging room‘. The round tables and flexible space will cater for activities that will allow group decision making as well as physical recreation and activities.

6. Workshop/ Communal Residents Area The workspace will include different cultures and ethnic groups participating in co-working activities. The communal area will be reserved for residents only. This space will be shared among all the residents who will have to mediate activities and occupation.

The internal layout encourages a sense of connectivity between different backgrounds and ethnicities. Each contact moment has been designed to facilitate an exchange between the guest and the host community.

11. ASSEMBLY SEQUENCE & HUB LIFE CYCLE The pallet racking system is quickly assembled and is rapidly deployed. A transient nature of the proposal means that it can be removed and easily transferred to other locations. The proposal maintains the structure that is placed into it. This structure, once removed, has minimal or no impact on the building it has been placed into.

12. DETAIL RELATIONSHIP TO CONTEXT 1 The proposal has a low impact on the surrounding structure. The detailing is sensitively kept to a minimum palette of materials. This adds to the speed of assembly and disassembly.

Introduction

In 2015, 25,700 refugees applied for asylum in the UK. 41% were rejected

The government spent 100 m pound on poor housing and aid. How can we change the situation.

By inhabiting vacant land,

That you can find in London,

As in tower hamlets,

Nursery and office block and a warehouse

Like this warehouse that has been vacant for 20 years.

That through property guardianship

People guard without paying

A Cheap off the shelf pallet racking system makes a shelter rather then renting a space, without impacting the interiors

One centre houses 300 people, saving ÂŁ 300.000

Rather than scattered organizations,

We propose to create a cooperative

Where refugees will collaborate

And UK citizens will be involved, through interactive learning experience
