BLUE MUSINGS FROM THE MOUNTAINS

BLUE MOUNTAINS, NSW

A traveler I once met told me that home is not a place, it is a feeling and he felt home when staying with me in a little mountain’s cottage I was renting at the time. To me, Glenbrook in the Lower Blue Mountains has always given me that feeling of being home. I think growing up in Warrandyte, which was once a sleepy little village in the outskirts of Melbourne, I have always yearned to find my home again, and here is the closest I have ever felt to being there. My childhood was spent in and around the rivers and creeks of Warrandyte. As kids we would spend hours fossicking in the stagnant ponds looking for frogs or yabbies or any other creature that happened to catch our attention. In recent times, I have flashbacks to jumping off the big rock into the water at Jelly Bean pool and being completely at ease with life. It was with a little tinge of sadness and irony, that Jelly Bean pool had all but dried up and only the ever resilient eels seemed not to notice.

See, the very first time I visited I fell in love. From the debonaire elderly usher dressed in his jacket and bow tie, who guided me to my seat in the little community hall to causeway that greets me with it’s watery smile every time I pass by. The Blue Mountains are a mecca for runners and hikers alike. With thousands of kilometers of endless bush trails and escarpments to explore, you can simply get lost in nature’s greatest gift. From the Sun Valley trails to the majestic Wentworth Falls, every trail leads to a new adventure. One where you come back both exhausted and rejuvenated. People often identify themselves as a Beach person or Mountains person. For me, I am a Mountains person through and through for I love nothing more than the call of the Australian bush. One day, I will find a kindred spirit, buy a little mountain cottage and live out my days with my faithful furry companion by my side. Until then, I bid you adieu. JP
