THEY HAVE A STAR-STUDDED SIDE AND ARE PLAYING AT HOME BUT WILL THE PRESSURE GET TO ENGLAND? England look the team to beat at this year’s ICC Cricket World Cup. Why? They are number one in the ODI world rankings, the bookies have them as favourites, they are playing at home in front of sold-out crowds, and arguably they have the strongest team to contest the tournament. But England have not been able to play anywhere near their potential at the previous 11 Cricket World Cups. Since the first tournament, played in England in 1975, they have played in only three finals. After losing to Pakistan in Melbourne in 1992 they have made none. Hopes are high this year that all those ghosts of tournaments past will finally be put to rest under the captaincy of Eoin Morgan. AUSTRALIA celebrate after winning the ICC Cricket World Cup final against New Zealand at the MCG in 2015.

The diminutive 32-year-old left-hander played 23 ODIs for Ireland between 2006 and 2009 before changing allegiances to England. Since then he has become a world-class player, scoring 6813 runs from 217 internationals. Morgan took over the captaincy of England just before the 2015 World Cup, where the team did not make it out of the group stage. Since then he has led a much-improved side built around the dynamic batting group of Joe Root, Jason Roy, Jos Buttler, Jonny Bairstow and gifted allrounder Ben Stokes. Who could end England’s dreams? India and Australia look the most likely. Second favourites India have won two previous titles and under the captaincy of Virat Kohli, the world’s best batsman, they have become a formidable unit with depth in all key positions.

fast hands. No one chases down a total better than MS does. Kohli bats at three, behind prolific run scorers Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan, and KL Rahul and Vijay Shankar follow. India have always had top-class spin bowlers but where they have improved dramatically is the quality and venom of their pace bowlers. Jasprit Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar Kumar could play vital roles. Australia have won five World Cups since 1987. As defending champions, they will have some pressure on them but have slipped under the radar pre-tournament as third favourites. With banned batsmen David Warner and Steve Smith back in the fold, their batting line-up is considerably stronger than it has been over the last 12 months when they struggled for consistency. Opening batsman and captain Aaron Finch has the right credentials to unite the squad. To repeat their 2015 World Cup final victory against New Zealand, Finch’s trump card may well be left-arm pace-bowler Mitchell Starc. He was the highest wicket-taker with 22 scalps from eight matches at an economy of just 3.50. Starc has struggled with injury and loss of form lately, but if he hits form – look out. New Zealand, South Africa, Pakistan and the Windies can beat any one of the favoured top-three on their day but lack the depth of world-class players England, India and Australia can call on. The BLACKCAPS will need their big three of Kane Williamson, Martin Guptill and Ross Taylor to fire with the bat every game and for strike bowlers Trent Boult and Tim Southee to get the new ball to swing. One player to watch is fast man Lockie Ferguson, who can bowl over 150kph on a consistent basis. So it looks like England’s tournament to lose but history tells us that the ICC Cricket World Cup can throw up plenty of shocks. It is going to be a fabulous watch over the coming weeks.

CRICKET 2019  // HISTORY

BLACKCAPS fly at previous cricket world cups

BATTLING THE ODDS TO OUTPERFORM THE FAVOURED TEAMS IS AN ENDURING TRAIT OF THE BLACKCAPS. It was called “the shot heard round the world”. In 1935 at the US Masters Tournament, Gene Sarazen hit his second shot on the now famous par-5 15th hole trailing by three shots. It rolled up the green and into the hole for a double eagle. He won a 36-hole play-off the following day. His unforgettable second shot was dubbed “the shot heard round the world” by sportswriter Grantland Rice. For New Zealand cricket fans, a similar moment in history came from BLACKCAPS allrounder Grant Elliott in the Cricket World Cup semi-final against South Africa played at Eden Park on March 24, 2015. With just two balls left in a pulsating match that had a bit of everything thrown in to the mix, Elliott faced up to famed South African pace bowler Dale Steyn needing a boundary to take the Kiwis into their first World Cup final. Steyn bowled the ball right into the slot for Elliott. With a beautiful rhythmical swing of the bat, Elliott smashed the ball deep into the heaving Eden Park crowd. It was a sporting moment no one who witnessed it will ever forget. GRANT ELLIOTT celebrates after hitting the 6 that put the BLACKCAPS into the 2015 Cricket World Cup final.

Moments later Elliott helped up a distraught Steyn–a piece of sportsmanship praised around the cricketing world. Sadly for the BLACKCAPS, they lost the final five days later against a rampant Australian team at the MCG. Mitchell Starc knocked over captain and champion opening batsman Brendon McCullum in the opening over and the BLACKCAPS never recovered. But it was a breakthrough moment for a New Zealand team to reach cricket’s biggest stage after striving so hard to make a final since the inaugural World Cup played in England in 1975. That epic victory over South Africa in 2015 was the sixth time New Zealand had reached the semi-finals out of the 11 tournaments held. In 1975, 1979, 1992, 1999 and 2011 the final stage was agonisingly close but each time–until 2015–it remained frustratingly elusive. As hard as it was to stomach losing the final to Australia, the 1992 semi-final loss to Pakistan by an outstanding Martin Crowe-led team was the most heart-breaking of all for New Zealand fans. The 1992 tournament was co-hosted by New Zealand and Australia for the first time and there were high hopes for Crowe’s “Young Guns”. A brilliant Crowe century set the tournament alight in the opening match at Eden Park as New Zealand beat Australia. While Crowe was systematically dismantling the Pakistan bowlers at the same ground in the semi-final a few weeks later, everything was in the home team’s favour to meet England in the final at the MCG. Then disaster struck. Crowe pulled a hamstring muscle while making 91 in an above-par score of 262-7. All the tactical plans that had been devised by Crowe and coach Warren Lees went astray in Pakistan’s innings with vice-captain John Wright reluctantly taking over for the injured Crowe. New Zealand may have still made it to Melbourne but for the wise old fox Javed Miandad and a new star of Pakistan cricket, Inzamam-ul-Haq, who smashed 60 off 37 balls. It was a sad end to what had been a captivating campaign by Crowe’s team. Opening the bowling with off-spinner Dipak Patel and using pinch hitter Mark Greatbatch at the top of the batting order broke new ground tactically, which has since become the norm in the modern game. Just 13 years later, at the same ground, Elliott made up for the heartache of 1992 with his famous shot and sent his team to their first Cricket World Cup final.

CRICKET 2019  // INTERVIEW

Captain Kane

chasing elusive title BRILLIANT BLACK CAPS BATSMAN IS THE 10TH NEW ZEALANDER TO LEAD HIS COUNTRY AT A CRICKET WORLD CUP. This month Kane Williamson will join an illustrious list of outstanding players who have captained the BLACKCAPS at Cricket World Cups since the inaugural event in England back in 1975. The list includes arguably the finest batsmen to ever wear the silver fern – Martin Crowe, Ross Taylor, Stephen Fleming, Glenn Turner and Brendon McCullum. The jury may still be out on whether Williamson has surpassed Crowe as our greatest batsman in all forms of the game, but on pure statistical analysis Williamson reigns supreme. But you will never find him talking about himself as being anything special. He has never been comfortable about the public profile that comes with being his country’s best player and in recent years, captain too. He would much rather face Mitchell Starc on a bouncy Gabba wicket than talk about his run-scoring records. Not now at the prime of his career or back when he first gained national recognition by breaking Crowe’s primary school records as a 12-year-old kid at Tauranga’s Otumoetai Intermediate. The great players of the modern game like Williamson, Virat Kohli, Brian Lara, Sachin Tendulkar, Kumar

8

Sangakkara and AB de Villiers all shared a rare trait as teenagers – being able to bat for long periods and score multiple centuries.

THE JURY MAY STILL BE OUT ON WHETHER WILLIAMSON HAS SURPASSED CROWE AS OUR GREATEST BATSMAN IN ALL FORMS OF THE GAME, BUT ON PURE STATISTICAL ANALYSIS WILLIAMSON REIGNS SUPREME. Talent was there in abundance with all these players but they had a unique attitude to practice that made them stand out from their peers. In Tauranga suburb Pillans Point, Williamson became something of a local legend for his hours and hours of backyard training and unceasing demand for perfection. Williamson quickly excelled at secondary school level. By Year 12 at Tauranga Boys’ College he was playing first-class cricket for Northern Districts, and by age 17 he captained the New Zealand Under-19 side. A legendary tale from that time came from a 12-day camp at the

NZ Cricket High Performance Centre in Lincoln. Williamson was coached by master batsman Glenn Turner, who knew a thing or two about scoring runs with 103 first-class hundreds to his name. During one open-wicket practice Williamson kept flicking balls from outside off stump backwards of square to the unprotected boundary. When asked by Turner why he was doing that Williamson answered “because there’s a gap there”. Great players think differently for sure.

Williamson arrives at the 2019 Cricket World Cup in the prime of his cricketing life. He is still young at 28 but has already experienced pretty much everything a player is likely to face in a cricket career. Since making his debut against India in Dambulla, India in 2010 he has played 139 ODI matches. In 2015 Williamson became the fifth fastest batsman to record 3000 ODI runs. He has now amassed 5554 runs at an average of 45.90 with 11 centuries and 37 fifties. Add in his 6139 test runs at 51.68 with 20 centuries, plus another 1501 runs in Twenty20 internationals, and it is a magnificent record. Leadership comes naturally to the self-effacing Williamson who has an inherent ability to lead from the front, either with a bat in his hand or organising his bowlers. Since becoming the fulltime leader of the BLACKCAPS in all formats of the game, his batting has gone to new levels of excellence. New Zealand are ranked fourth in ODI standings behind England, India and South Africa. Much

will depend on Williamson’s run-scoring form if the Kiwis are to make it through to the play-offs. Given what he achieved in the first part of his career you would not bet against him being the tournament’s highest run-scorer. It’s just what he does.

In the form of his life:

Ross Taylor THE WORLD-CLASS BATSMAN IS SET TO SHINE ON CRICKET’S BIG STAGE. In late 2016 Ross Taylor decided enough was enough. He had been putting up with the problem of not being able to see the ball clearly, it was caused by tissue growth, known as a pterygium, across the cornea of his left eye.

AGE: ODI MATCHES: BATTING RUNS: AVERAGE: STRIKE RATE: HIGHEST SCORE: HUNDREDS: FIFTIES:

35 218 8026 48.34 83.37 181 20 47

He is the sixth-highest run scorer since then (minimum 10 innings played), having plundered 2892 runs at an average of 68.8 – second only to the world’s best player Kohli. Included in that run fest are eight centuries and 17 fifties.

He will become just the sixth New Zealander to play at four World Cups, alongside John Wright, Chris Cairns, Chris Harris, Stephen Fleming and Brendon McCullum. Daniel Vettori leads the way with five appearances.

In the 2018 calendar year Taylor really set the cricket world alight with an astonishing run of ODI success. He scored 751 runs at a whopping average of 125.16 with three centuries and four fifties.

Taylor has warmed up for the 2019 tournament by playing 50-over cricket for Middlesex in the final stages of the One-Day Cup in England. He replaced England captain Eoin Morgan in the team, and the team uses Lord’s as their home base.

So he underwent surgery to remove the growth and since then his batting numbers in tests, ODIs and Twenty20 internationals have been eye-opening to say the least.

In February this year Taylor scored 69 against Bangladesh in Dunedin to become New Zealand’s leading ODI run-scorer. His knock took his career total to 8026 runs, moving past Stephen Fleming’s record of 8007 in 66 fewer innings.

In November last year the ICC released their ODI world rankings. Taylor’s remarkable run of form saw him reach a career-high third place with only the prolific Indian duo of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma ahead of him.

During that innings at University Oval, Taylor became the fourth quickest batsman to score 8000 ODI runs (203 innings), sitting behind Kohli, South Africa’s AB de Villiers and India’s former captain Sourav Ganguly.

Closer inspection of the figures reveals just how good Taylor has been since the last World Cup and that eye operation.

Taylor will be hoping that his wonderful form continues at the Cricket World Cup, which for New Zealand begins on June 1 against Sri Lanka.

Run machine ROSS TAYLOR plays a trademark drive against South Africa.

It is definitely a case of unfinished business for Taylor at this year’s tournament. His batting numbers at his previous three World Cups all fall below his overall career standings. At the team naming for the World Cup, Taylor admitted that losing the 2015 final to Australia will play a big part in terms of experience and dealing with such big games. He is using that defeat as motivation to help the BLACKCAPS go one step further this time. Certainly, Taylor would love to mark his (probably final) World Cup appearance by helping the BLACKCAPS make the final and scoring a searing hundred at Lord’s. Now that would be a way to put the icing on a magnificent career.

Mitchell Santner

key allrounder

FOLLOWING IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF DANIEL VETTORI WAS NEVER GOING TO BE EASY FOR THE LEFT-ARM SPINNER AND LOWER ORDER BATSMAN THAT TOOK OVER THE MANTLE FROM THE KIWI GREAT. Vettori was a dominant figure for much of the time he was a Black Cap. His career began as an 18-year-old and ended after the 2015 Cricket World Cup final in Melbourne when he was aged 36. He scored 4531 runs and took 362 wickets from 113 tests played, while in ODIs he amassed 2253 runs and took 295 wickets. But in Mitchell Santner New Zealand cricket have a player who offers a similar skill-set to Vettori. With his intelligent use of flight and guile as a traditional left-arm spinner, and the ability to hit the ball to the boundary in parts of the field opposing captains can never imagine, Santner is now well-established as a key allrounder in the Black Caps. The tall 27-year-old has matured into a world-class performer and is now fully fit and back to his best form, following knee surgery that ruled him out of most of last year. Santner has fond memories of playing against England–both at the home of cricket and in New Zealand. In 2015 he made his ODI debut against England and quickly made his mark. Off one over, he hit leg spinner Adil Rashid for 28 runs in the match at Trent Bridge, Nottingham–the second-highest runs off one over ever posted in England. In the series played in New Zealand in 2017–2018, Santner hit 216 runs at an average of 108 from four innings against England.

12

MITCHELL SANTNER’s bowling for the Black Caps will be crucial at the Cricket World Cup.

There was a coming-of-age performance in Hamilton when Santner stepped-up to win the game for the Black Caps. After some patchy form with the bat leading up to the series, he came good with a sublime cameo of 45* off 27 balls, finishing the match in style with a huge six in the final over.

THE TALL 27-YEAR-OLD HAS MATURED INTO A WORLD-CLASS PERFORMER AND IS NOW FULLY FIT AND BACK TO HIS BEST FORM, FOLLOWING KNEE SURGERY THAT RULED HIM OUT OF MOST OF LAST YEAR In his ODI career, Santner has scored 826 runs at 27.53 from 59 ODI matches with two half-centuries. But it is with the ball as New Zealand’s first-choice spinner that Santner has made the biggest impression. He has 63 wickets, with an economy rate per over of 4.90, which is an indication of how rarely he gets taken to by the world’s best batsmen. This year’s Cricket World Cup may well be decided by the quality of the spin bowlers, rather than the nasty fast bowlers, as the majority of England’s pitches suit spin rather than pace.

Last year England enjoyed a long hot summer and similar conditions are forecast for this June and July. Teams winning the toss are likely to want to bat first and make use of the better batting conditions to set a chase. If New Zealand can get the runs on the board then Santner’s left-arm spinners will be a major threat to opposing teams chasing down targets. While IPL Twenty20 form–whether good or bad–does not mean too much ahead of the Cricket World Cup, in Santner’s case his form for the Chennai Super Kings has been significant. He again showed his liking for the winning hit by smashing England’s Ben Stokes for six off the final ball, which is a good indicator his confidence with the bat is where it should be. In his next game he followed up with the ball, taking excellent figures of 2-13 off four overs and the wickets of internationals Evin Lewis and Rohit Sharma. More of the same from Santner in England over the next few weeks will go a long way to helping the Black Caps reach their goals.

» THE BEST 10 TEAMS WILL CONTEST THE ICC CRICKET WORLD CUP AT VENUES IN ENGLAND AND WALES. AUSTRALIA ARE THE DEFENDING CHAMPIONS FROM 2015 BUT ENGLAND AND INDIA ARE THE TAB FAVOURITES. WHO DO YOU THINK WILL WIN?

AFGHANISTAN

2015 WORLD CUP PLACING: GROUP STAGE CAPTAIN: GULBADIN NAIB NATIONAL COACH: PHIL SIMMONS WEBSITE: www.cricket.af TAB ODDS: $101.00 At every one of the previous 11 Cricket World Cups there has been a major upset. Afghanistan look most likely to be the side to cause one in 2019. Afghanistan have made rapid strides since featuring at the 2015 World Cup for the first time. At that tournament they enjoyed their first World Cup victory by beating Scotland and they showed plenty of fortitude and an ability to scrap hard in losing their other five games. Afghanistan are coached by former Windies allrounder Phil Simmons and are captained by 28-year-old bowling allrounder Gulbadin Naib. To make the 2019 Cricket World Cup they had to endure a nail-biting qualifying competition held in Zimbabwe last year. In the final they defeated the Windies by seven wickets in a commanding performance that made headlines around the cricketing world. At the 2018 Asia Cup, they beat Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, pushed Pakistan hard and tied against eventual champions India. Their key player is undoubtedly combative leg-spinner Rashid Khan. The 20-year-old has proven himself as an ODI wicket-taking bowler and has also starred in the IPL. He can bowl in the power play as well as in the death overs. In March last year, aged just 19, he became the fastest to reach 100 ODI wickets in 44 matches. He reached the milestone quicker than such bowling luminaries as Mitchell Starc (52 matches), Saqlain Mushtaq (53), Shane Bond (54) and Brett Lee (55).

AUSTRALIA

2015 WORLD CUP PLACING: CHAMPIONS CAPTAIN: AARON FINCH COACH: JUSTIN LANGER WEBSITE: www.cricket.com.au TAB ODDS: $5.00 No side has enjoyed quite the success at the Cricket World Cup like defending champions Australia, who have been crowned champions five times. Australia’s captain Aaron Finch has the right temperament to lead his talented squad to potentially more success at this year’s tournament. He may need all his skills with a group of players that include controversial batsmen David Warner and Steve Smith, returning after their 12-month bans. Undoubtedly the batting will be strong with Finch, Warner, Smith, Usman Khawaja, Shaun Marsh, Marcus Stoinus and the mercurial Glenn Maxwell likely to be in the mix. Off-spinner Nathan Lyon and leggie Adam Zampa should play crucial roles in the bowling effort, especially if the wickets are dry and keep low as they often did last summer in England and Wales. The pace bowling group is led by Mitchell Starc, who at his best has no peer in world cricket. But the big left-armer will need to get past some niggling injury concerns, poor recent form and an average record in England to again succeed on cricket’s biggest stage. Lion-hearted quickie Pat Cummins is a player to watch. He has the ability to get the very best players out in good batting conditions and never gives up. He is a good bet for handy runs with the bat too. They may be ranked third favourites at the TAB but Australia are serious contenders to contest the final at Lord’s on July 14.

BANGLADESH

2015 WORLD CUP PLACING: QUARTER-FINALISTS CAPTAIN: MASHRAFE MORTAZA COACH: STEVE RHODES WEBSITE: www.tigercricket.com.bd TAB ODDS: $101.00 Making the quarter-final and beating England in 2015 are the highlights for the Tigers from their participation in the last five Cricket World Cups. Bangladesh defeated England in Adelaide in a major upset to set-up a quarter-final showdown at the MCG against India, who proved too strong. That historic win over England was set-up by a masterful 103 from Mahmudullah and 89 from Mushfiqur Rahim. Bangladesh made 275–7 before bowling out England for 260. Both players are back again this tournament with experienced wicketkeeper-batsman Rahim at his fourth World Cup. Former South African batsman Neil McKenzie is their well-respected batting coach and will be looking for more runs from Mahmudullah and Rahim, and from other quality players such as Sabbir Rahman, Tamim Iqbal and Soumya Sarkar.

How the Bangladesh batsmen adapt from the slow, turning tracks in the subcontinent to the pitches in England and Wales may well determine how far their team progresses in the tournament. This will be 35-year-old captain Mashrafe Mortaza's last World Cup. It is a minor miracle he continues to run into bowl after so much surgery on his knees. The hugely popular figure is a renowned fighter and his determination will flow through what is quite an experienced side. If they are fit and able to bowl in tandem then pace bowlers Mustafizur Rahman, Rubel Hossain and Mohammad Saifuddin will be a threat to every batting line-up. Young left-armer Rahman is a world-class exponent of the art of swinging the new ball at pace and has improved greatly under the tutelage of bowling coach and former Windies great Courtney Walsh.

ENGLAND 2015 WORLD CUP PLACING: GROUP STAGE CAPTAIN: EOIN MORGAN COACH: TREVOR BAYLISS WEBSITE: www.ecb.co.uk TAB ODDS: $3.25 When England suffered a humiliating defeat to Bangladesh and were knocked out of the 2015 Cricket World Cup at the group stage, work began immediately on changing the culture of the ODI team. Led by determined captain Eoin Morgan and a group of leaders, Jonny Bairstow, Ben Stokes and Joe Root, new systems were put in place and specialist ODI players were promoted. It is now four years on from that forgettable evening in Adelaide, and England are favourites ahead of this year’s World Cup to be played at home. Their hard work has paid-off with England surging to the top of the ICC ODI rankings.

There is no doubt England have the players. Morgan, Root, Jason Roy, Jos Buttler, Bairstow and gifted allrounder Stokes form a dynamic batting group, with a combative bowling group to complement them.

While newly qualified Jofra Archer has been gaining media attention, it is 30-year-old Chris Woakes who will lead the bowling attack. The classic English seamer with a deceptive slower ball has been arguably the best new-ball bowler in ODI cricket for the last 18 months. Speedsters Mark Wood, Liam Plunkett, David Willey and the precociously talented allrounder Tom Curran have all performed to a high standard when given the chance in England’s blue shirt. Leg spinner Adil Rashid and off-spinner Moeen Ali are proven performers and will share the spinning duties. Confidence levels are high in Morgan’s side. But they will also be under extreme pressure from their fans and media who know this is the best opportunity for England to finally win the tournament. Perhaps the clash with India at Edgbaston on June 30 will give a clear indication on whether England can hold their nerve and win this World Cup.

INDIA 2015 WORLD CUP PLACING: SEMI-FINALISTS CAPTAIN: VIRAT KOHLI COACH: RAVI SHASTRI WEBSITE: www.bcci.tv TAB ODDS: $3.75 The drums and a fair few tabla are beating loudly for India to win their first Cricket World Cup since 2011. Under the inspirational leadership of captain Virat Kohli and former captain MS Dhoni, India have become the team to beat in world cricket. They set the benchmark for others to follow and attract fanatical support wherever they play. In years gone by India have struggled to win away from their home conditions but such is the nature of the modern game that their rock-star players are just as comfortable playing at Lord’s or Trent Bridge as they are in Mumbai or Delhi. India have a very well-balanced side, with strong allrounders adding to the side’s traditional strengths. With the conditions in England and Wales likely to favour batsmen, the formidable run-scoring ability of India’s top order could well decide the outcome. Kohli is comfortably the best player in the world and a man who loves the big stage. Alongside him, players such as Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, KL Rahul, Vijay Shankar, Hardik Pandya and Dhoni should ensure large totals are set. Everyone associated with Indian cricket will want one of their greatest players to potentially finish his career in style. Dhoni turns 38 during the tournament but is showing no sign of losing his class. In January he smashed three consecutive half-centuries to clinch the one-day series against Australia. The quick bowlers, led by Jasprit Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, are the best group India have ever had playing together, so opposing opening batsmen will be under threat from the first ball. It will be fascinating to see whether any team can stop India.

NEW ZEALAND 2015 WORLD CUP PLACING: RUNNERS-UP CAPTAIN: KANE WILLIAMSON COACH: GARY STEAD WEBSITE: www.nzc.nz TAB ODDS: $11.00 The BLACKCAPS are not quite the side that made it all the way to the grand final four years ago but they still have the ability to cause plenty of upsets. A lack of consistency may be the major issue and certainly they will miss the explosive run-scoring from former captain Brendon McCullum and all-round cricketing smarts of Grant Elliott. The last 12 months has seen plenty of highs, as their ranking as fourth-best in the world on the ICC ODI table indicates. All their stars will need to align for a run at the final to be realised and they cannot afford injuries to their best players. Bowlers Trent Boult, Tim Southee and Mitchell Santner are key men, while Matt Henry, Lockie Ferguson, Jimmy Neesham and leg spinner Ish Sodhi are yet to play at a World Cup. Bowling in the final death overs was problematic all summer for captain Kane Williamson and somehow a plan must be forged to sort that out. The top-order batting is as good as any in the world with Williamson, Martin Guptill and Ross Taylor leading the way. They will need to score heavily to give the BLACKCAPS a chance of beating the likes of England, India and Australia. They will need good support from the rapidly improving Henry Nicholls and Tom Latham. The wicket-keeping duties will fall on Latham’s broad shoulders with newbie Tom Blundell a capable back-up. BLACKCAPS supporters will be hoping that the strenuous task over so many games in succession will not negatively impact Latham’s batting. Hope springs eternal for New Zealand fans at Cricket World Cups. There is enough talent in Williamson’s team to keep that hope alive.

PAKISTAN 2015 WORLD CUP PLACING: QUARTER-FINALISTS CAPTAIN: SARFARAZ AHMED COACH: MICKEY ARTHUR WEBSITE: www.pcb.com.pk TAB ODDS: $13.00 With the amount of potential match-winners in their squad it would be unwise to write Pakistan off ahead of the tournament. Mohammad Hasnain and Shaheen Shah Afridi, both 19, are two of the fastest bowlers in world cricket. They will have to take responsibility with the new ball after left-arm quick Mohammad Amir was left out of the squad, controversially. Babar Azam is regarded as the next Pakistan superstar with the bat. He has played 59 ODIs, averages an impressive 51.29 and has eight centuries and 10 fifties to his name. Other key players are leg spinner Shadab Khan and left-handed opener Fakhar Zaman. Clear evidence of Zaman’s ability to perform under extreme pressure was his matchwinning century in the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy final against India. Veteran allrounders Mohammad Hafeez, 38, and Shoaib Malik, 37, have amassed 490 ODI caps between them and are still playing as well as ever. Off the field, their benefit to the team’s younger players is immeasurable. With an average age of 27.3, Pakistan have the youngest squad at the tournament. Wicket-keeper/batsman Sarfaraz Ahmed will captain Pakistan in his usual no-nonsense style that leaves his team in no doubt what he is thinking. A hard task-master yes, but along with coach Mickey Arthur he has transformed Pakistan into a top-class fielding side. Pakistan have never defeated India at a Cricket World Cup but will take great heart from beating them in the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy final. The two teams meet at Old Trafford on Sunday, June 16 in what will be one of the most hyped and keenly anticipated games at the tournament.

SOUTH AFRICA 2015 WORLD CUP PLACING: SEMI-FINALISTS CAPTAIN: FAF DU PLESSIS COACH: OTTIS GIBSON WEBSITE: www.cricket.co.za TAB ODDS: $11.00 Could this be the year South Africa finally get their name engraved on the Cricket World Cup? The Proteas have made World Cup semi-finals four times – 1992, 1997, 2007 and 2015 – with each occasion engrained in South African sporting history for all the wrong reasons. On paper, captain Faf du Plessis has a side more than capable of getting through into the knock-out stages, and once there anything can happen. The team has plenty of batting firepower with Du Plessis, openers Quinton de Kock and Hashim Amla, JP Duminy and David Miller. Opener Aiden Markram and prolific run-scorer Rassie van der Dussen, who averages 88.25 from his nine ODIs, are other batsmen in the mix. Talented Kagiso Rabada, 23, will lead the bowling attack. He is now comfortable doing so on the biggest stage in cricket after playing 66 ODIs. He has 106 wickets at a wonderful average of 26.43. Lungi Ngidi, Anrich Nortje, Andile Phehlukwayo and veteran Dale Steyn are the other pace bowlers in the squad and have been under injury clouds in recent months. If they are fit, two are likely to join Rabada in an impressive pace attack. The Proteas possess the tournament's oldest player in 40-year-old leg-spinner Imran Tahir, who has 162 wickets from 98 ODIs at 24.21. With pitches likely to be helpful, his contribution will be crucial in what will be his final performance before he retires. Left-arm wrist spinner Tabraiz Shamsi is another trump card who could play a significant part in how well the Proteas go, if conditions suit him. The Proteas should get through the group stage and be part of the knock-out stage. Whether they can hold their nerve this time is the unknown factor.

SRI LANKA 2015 WORLD CUP PLACING: QUARTER-FINALISTS CAPTAIN: DIMUTH KARUNARATNE COACH: CHANDIKA HATHURUSINGHA WEBSITE: www.srilankacricket.lk TAB ODDS: $51.00 Rebuilding – this is the best way to describe the 1996 champions. Sri Lanka have been through a barren spell in ODI cricket in recent seasons so the selectors have put their faith in a new group of players for this World Cup. Regular team members Niroshan Dickwella, Danushka Gunathilaka, Dinesh Chandimal, Upul Tharanga and Akila Dananjaya have all missed selection. Dropping Dananjaya was a shock as the spinner is their highest wicket-taker – 27 at 23.92 in 15 innings – in the last 12 months. Selectors have rewarded strong domestic form, so in come batsman Lahiru Thirimanne, leg spinner Jeffrey Vandersay and allrounders Milinda Siriwardana and Jeevan Mendis. The shocks did not end there. Experienced batsman Dimuth Karunaratne was named captain despite having played only 17 ODIs, with the last back in 2015 at the World Cup. He did lead the test team to an historic away series win over South Africa in February. Former captain Dinesh Chandimal has played 146 ODIs and will add plenty of experience to the batting line-up. There is no shortage of old heads among the bowlers – the team is the oldest in the tournament with an average age of 29.9. Pace men Lasith Malinga, 35, and Suranga Lakmal, 32, will spearhead the bowling attack. Malinga has made 218 ODI appearances and seems to have regained some of his speed. Former captain Angelo Mathews, 31, is back after injury problems on the tour to New Zealand and his all-round skills are crucial to Sri Lanka getting past the group stage. Jeevan Mendis, 36, like captain Karunaratne, has not played ODI cricket since 2015. The left-handed batsman and right-arm leg spinner is a good addition to the squad.

WINDIES 2015 WORLD CUP PLACING: QUARTER-FINALISTS CAPTAIN: JASON HOLDER COACH: FLOYD REIFER WEBSITE: www.windiescricket.com TAB ODDS: $13.00 The last 12 months have seen a resurgence in cricket fortunes for the Windies. After winning the first two Cricket World Cups in 1975 and 1979, and then losing to India in 1983, there have been no further finals appearances for the once dominant team. But under the captaincy of outstanding allrounder Jason Holder and his follow-me bravado, there has been a significant improvement in all forms of the game. The Windies proved just how capable they can be with some good showings against the world’s best teams in the 2018–2019 season. In October last year they lost to India in a highly competitive series held in India, which included a rare tied ODI. The individual and team performances showed just how good they have become under Holder. Coach Floyd Reifer was appointed in April after a major clean-out of selectors and coaches in what the Windies hope is the start of a new era of success. The squad for the World Cup is full of potential match-winners. None more so than champion allrounder Andre Russell who is back in the fold after playing just one ODI since 2015. Injuries and a year-long doping ban restricted his appearances but his exploits in the IPL have shown just how destructive he can be with bat and ball. Another superstar of limited-overs cricket is opener Chris Gayle. If he can fire and get his team away to explosive starts then anything is possible. His opening partner Evin Lewis is also capable of fast scoring and in 2017 scored 176* against England at The Oval. Younger players worth watching are batsman Shimron Hetmyer and highly regarded fast-bowler Oshane Thomas, who are both 22 and outstanding prospects for the future.

SIR RICHARD HADLEE claims another wicket against Australia in 1985.

IT HAS BEEN 32 YEARS SINCE NEW ZEALAND PLAYED AUSTRALIA IN A BOXING DAY TEST IN MELBOURNE. The last time New Zealand were involved in a Boxing Day test at the MCG, captain Kane Williamson and nearly all of his team were not even born. The fixture has become such a feature on the Australian sporting calendar that the opening day’s play on December 26 has become one of the major events in the sports-mad city. In the 2013 tests against England, 91,092 people attended on Boxing Day, setting a record that may take some beating. New Zealand’s last test played at the MCG cauldron was back in 1987. It ended in a draw after Australia’s tenacious number 11, Mike Whitney, somehow played out the final over bowled by Sir Richard Hadlee. In the second-to-last over Danny Morrison trapped Australian number 10, Craig McDermott, plumb in front. But to everyone’s amazement–including former captain Ian Chappell in the commentary box who famously said “I thought it had bowled him” –home umpire Dick French said not out. The YouTube footage is not kind to umpire French, and Morrison’s reaction to the decision says it all. There were happier times in 1985. New Zealand enjoyed their

finest moment in test cricket history by winning the series 2-1, inspired by Hadlee and Martin Crowe at the peak of their powers. The first test of that series was played at the Gabba in Brisbane. It will always be remembered as Hadlee’s test. The great bowler made full use of the swing on offer in the Queensland humidity to rip through the Aussies taking 9–52 in their first innings of 179. Crowe (188) and John Reid (108) set-up New Zealand’s innings of 553-7 before Hadlee took 6-71 to help bowl Australia out for 333 and a famous victory by an innings and 41 runs.

Glenn McGrath, Brett Lee, Jason Gillespie and Shane Warne. Two consecutive poor performances followed by New Zealand teams in 2004–2005 and 2008–2009 with Australia completely dominant.

THE LAST TIME NEW ZEALAND WERE INVOLVED IN A BOXING DAY TEST AT THE MCG, CAPTAIN KANE WILLIAMSON AND NEARLY ALL OF HIS TEAM WERE NOT EVEN BORN. Australia fought back to win the second test in Sydney before New Zealand won the third test in Perth. Hadlee finished the three-test series with an incredible haul of 31 wickets. The 2001-2002 series was drawn with captain Stephen Fleming part of a record-breaking innings in Perth. Fleming, Nathan Astle, Lou Vincent and Adam Parore all made centuries against a strong Australian bowling line-up of

Things improved in 2011-2012 when New Zealand won their first test in Australia since the Hadlee/Crowe tour of 1985. The second test of the series was played in Hobart and Doug Bracewell was the hero, bowling Australia out in the fourth innings. Chasing 241 to win, Australia was finally out for 233 with Bracewell taking 6–40 in a man-of-the-match performance.

The last tour to Australia was four years ago and the Aussies were again too strong, winning 2–0. But the tour was the coming-of-age as a test player for Kane Williamson who made his mark with centuries in Brisbane and Perth. Ross Taylor made a magnificent 290 in a huge partnership with Williamson in Perth. Comparisons to the 1985 triumph will be made as Williamson’s men compete in three tests and three ODIs against Australia next summer. If Williamson can emulate Crowe, and Boult and Southee between them match Hadlee, then maybe history could repeat. At least there will be neutral umpires this time, unlike when Morrison bowled that famous delivery that should have won the last test New Zealand played at the MCG.
