Super Rugby preview Can the Bulls make it a hat-trick? Are the Crusaders the team to stop them? How good are the Australian sides? Welcome to another season of Super Rugby. around the underperforming Auckland franchise remains to be seen. Former Crusader Mark Hammett is the man charged with turning things around at the Hurricanes in his rookie season while Ian Foster faces a big challenge in his last season in charge of the Chiefs. Not as big as the one facing Jamie Joseph who has the huge task of transforming the Highlanders into a competitive outfit. Across the ditch, the Reds and Waratahs should be the standard bearers for the Australian sides. The Brumbies might just struggle without George Smith and Stirling Mortlock, the Force might just struggle, while it’s impossible to predict how the newest member of the Super Rugby club, the Melbourne Rebels, will fare in their first season. CHAMPIONS: The Bulls celebrate after their win in last year’s Super 14 final.

It’s that time of year again; the start of another season of Super Rugby. The time of year when every franchise, every coach, every player and every fan can dream that this year will be their year but who are the realistic contenders for the crown?

After a pretty average international season for the Boks last year can their Super Rugby franchises give the national side a boost ahead of the World Cup? The Bulls are going for their third title in a row and with a fairly settled side, they’ll be hard to stop again. The Stormers have recruited well and they could pose the biggest threat to the Bulls.

Of the New Zealand sides, once again the Crusaders look like the best of the bunch. With the next Muhammad Ali (aka Sonny Bill Williams) in their squad, how can they lose! The Blues welcome back the other Ali, Ali Williams but whether his presence will be enough to turn

The Sharks will be hoping to improve on their disappointing 9th place finish last year while it’s hard to see the Lions and the Cheetahs do anything but what they’ve done for the last few years, that is battle it out for the wooden spoon at the bottom of the table.

Title hopes burn brightly A renewed feeling of optimism is swirling around the Blues camp. They have a formidable squad and once again must be one of the favourites for the title. Last Year: Much was expected of the Blues after a poor campaign in 2009 but despite a promising start, the campaign stuttered along before grinding to a halt in 7th spot. Imported Crusader Stephen Brett struggled to impose himself in the contentious No 10 jersey and he will be under pressure to produce this season. Luck of the Draw: An Eden Park clash against the Crusaders is hard to beat for the opening game of the season. The Blues then fly to South Africa to take on the Sharks and Lions before a difficult assignment in Perth against the Force. On the plus side, the Blues will not play the Bulls or Brumbies in round-robin play. Coach’s Call: If Pat Lam feels any pressure to bring some long awaited success back to the franchise then he hides it well. He exudes confidence and believes the hard work done over the last two years will pay off in this new campaign. “I am very confident we will continue to get better. We have made progress and I am excited about where we are at the moment with our development. In 2009 we had 17 new guys in the team and this year only two players have never played Super Rugby before. But more importantly I have coached 28 of the 32 players in the squad which helps when you are building the culture and leadership and how they play on the field.” A major reason for Lam’s optimism is All Blacks flanker Daniel Braid, who is set to add to his 59 games for the Blues after two seasons with the Reds. Braid was a key part of Lam’s all conquering Auckland side of 2007, and Lam openly admits the blonde tearaway has been sorely missed.

tour he can play wing at the highest level. He is a special kind of player who can slot in anywhere but certainly centre or fullback are his preference.” Lam has the gifted Jared Payne as another option to run the ball back in style from fullback but may prefer to use the powerful Rene Ranger as his starting centre with Toeava running off him from the deep. Who’s New: Brad Mika returns home from Japan recovering from a serious knee injury so expect him to be used sparingly in the early stages. Bay of Plenty flanker Luke Braid will be a useful addition but his big brother Daniel is undoubtedly the key new signing.

Website: www.theblues.co.nz

Who’s Through: Rudi Wulf, Anthony Tuitavake and Paul Williams have moved overseas, while tough openside flanker Serge Lilo has returned home to the Hurricanes.

GOLDEN BOY: Daniel Braid will lead the Blues loose forwards after two years with the Reds.

“His leadership is huge for us and was so important in the past. One of the reasons I wanted him back at the Blues was to get that knowledge and inspiration again. Braidy has made a massive impact and he came back to training early. It is a real pleasure to have him in the team again.” The Blues have an outstanding squad, with All Blacks across all positions except the crucial first-five spot, where Stephen Brett will again try to prove once and for all he can live up to the hype. But one player Lam has no reason to worry about is Isaia Toeava. “Ice played centre and fullback for us the majority of the time but he showed on last year’s All Blacks

Drums beating for Chiefs The Chiefs have always lacked quality tight forwards and enough experienced, tough players to cover for the expected injuries. This year they have all the bases covered. Last Year: Injuries, injuries and more injuries. The Chiefs were without most of their big guns for large parts of the campaign and had to blood too many youngsters. Their 11th place finish was a travesty after contesting the 2009 final. Luck of the Draw: The Chiefs have three of their opening four matches away from Hamilton but have a comfortable draw to follow. The South African trip is in the ideal April slot when the early season heat and humidity have cooled somewhat. Coach’s Call: Ian Foster is not an emotional man but there is no denying his excitement ahead of his eighth and last season in charge. He has a forward pack with real grunt and a genuine title-winning squad he says is suited to the new competition. Website: www.chiefs.co.nz Tickets: 0800 4 CHIEFS or see website for details Contact: Cnr Tristram & Abbotsford Streets, PO Box 9507, Hamilton Phone: 07 839 5675 HIGH CHIEF: Injury prone centre Richard Kahui is set to make a major contribution.

“We have more experience and a few more options than we’ve had before, particularly in that tight five. It has been a little easier for Hayden (Triggs) to integrate himself because he has been injury free and has a relatively new role of playing six. Isaac (Ross) has gelled in with us really well and is training well. He had a knee operation after the ITM Cup which has held him back a bit but he is now looking really settled in the team environment. Scotty Waldrom was playing Sevens before Christmas so he has had some catching up to do but he can’t wait to get on the park. “Having a longer season is really going to test the squad. We had to introduce a lot of our younger players last year because of so many injuries, and while that exposed us through the learning process, it has us in a slightly better position for

this year than we would have been. Players like Tim Nanai-Williams, Ben Afeaki and Culum Retallick have significant game time under their belt now.” The Chiefs injury curse has hit early with first choice No 8 Colin Bourke out until May with a shoulder injury picked up playing for the Barbarians in London late last year. But Foster has faith in the back-up available. “The injury to Bourkey has been a blow and has narrowed down some of our options in the loose forwards. It certainly has opened the door for Fritz Lee to come in there and put his hand up, and Liam (Messam) is keen to play there at some stage. We have some exciting talent coming through our wider training squad, so the cupboard is not bare at all.” The likely return of injured All Blacks centre Richard Kahui in round four is another reason why Foster is so upbeat. “Richard is in good shape mentally and physically, so once he gets into playing mode I am excited about how well he goes. He is a quality person, a quality footballer, and being a Chief means a lot to him.” Who’s New: The Chiefs have recruited well. Tana Umaga, Scott Waldrom, Isaac Ross, Hayden Triggs, Fritz Lee and Taniela Moa head the list of new players in the franchise’s strongest ever squad. Who’s Through: Flanker Luke Braid has joined his brother at the Blues. Midfielder Callum Bruce (Japan) will be missed but Sione Lauaki (France) won’t be after unsettling the team on and off the pitch last year. CHIEFS SQUAD Backs: Mike Delany, Stephen Donald, Richard Kahui, Tawera Kerr-Barlow, Brendon Leonard, Lelia Masaga, Taniela Moa, Malili Muliaina, Tim Nanai-Williams, Sitiveni Sivivatu, Dwayne Sweeney, Savenaca Tokula, Tana Umaga, Jackson Willison. Forwards: Ben Afeaki, Colin Bourke, Craig Clarke, Aled de Malmanche, Hikawera Elliot, Romana Graham, Tanerau Latimer, Fritz Lee, Ben May, Liam Messam, Dan Perrin, Culum Retallick, Isaac Ross, Toby Smith, Sona Taumalolo, Hayden Triggs, Scott Waldrom, Nathan White.

CRUSADERS

Dead set title favourites While many franchises have strengthened their squads, particularly the Chiefs and the Blues, it is hard to bet against the Crusaders winning their eighth Super Rugby title. Last Year: For the second consecutive year the Crusaders lost to the Bulls at the semi-final stage so the season has to be considered below average given their high standards, despite a massive improvement in their attacking prowess. Luck of the Draw: The two byes are ideally placed before and after their South African sojourn, but if there are any early season jitters they’ll be tested in the opening away matches against the Blues and Hurricanes. The Crusaders finish with two home games to prime themselves for yet another home semi-final.

Website: www.crusaders.co.nz Tickets: www.ticketdirect.co.nz or see website for details. Contact: PO Box 755, Christchurch Phone: 03 379 8300

CLASS ACT: Sonny Bill Williams will be a key cog in the Crusaders new look midfield.

Coach’s Call: Straight shooter Todd Blackadder was less than impressed with the performance of most of the senior All Blacks last year, including in his own team, but expects a massive increase in intensity with what is at stake in 2011. “Overall last year I thought Richie McCaw was the standout player for the Crusaders but generally among the All Blacks I thought there was a level of mediocrity across the board from some of the big guns. It had a real feel of being a pre-World Cup year with players biding their time. I don’t think that will happen this year as the players have so much to play for in such a defining year.” While the pre-season injury to McCaw is a blow to the Crusaders, the midfield combination of the powerfully built Sonny Bill Williams and Robbie Fruean has Crusaders fans salivating and opposition players checking their medical insurance. Blackadder says they are just the pairing the Crusaders need to go up a few notches. ”We looked at our backline a few years ago and we felt we needed some more physicality and

power and I think those two together can become the world’s best centres. They complement each other well and are a powerhouse unit. If they start feeding off each other they will be devastating.” Williams’ pre-season boxing has captured headlines but for Blackadder it has never been an issue. “There are a lot worse things he could be doing. He loves it and his training was outside our pre-season window when he was technically on holiday. I look upon his boxing as a positive thing.” Blackadder is disappointed his two campaigns in charge have ended with defeats to the Bulls as he has always had title aspirations since he took over from Robbie Deans. “Any team that is not out there to win the championship is kidding themselves and we are no different. I’d like to think we can do better this time than the last two years. We showed signs of what we can do but we didn’t nail the opportunities when they were presented really. The Bulls are the best and I am pleased we are playing them (round 8) because it gives us another opportunity to benchmark ourselves against them. It would be nice to get one back on them but this competition is much more than just one game. To be there at the end you have to be consistent.” Who’s New: How Sonny Bill Williams performs over the entire campaign will be a discussion point in bars throughout the country. He is a special talent and joins other significant recruits in Israel Dagg, Matt Berquist and Under-20s star first-five Tyler Bleyendaal. Who’s Through: Colin Slade, Jared Payne, Tim Bateman and Daniel Bowden have gone from the backline while Isaac Ross, Thomas Waldrom and Ti’i Paulo are missing from last year’s pack. CRUSADERS SQUAD: Backs: Matt Berquist, Tyler Bleyendaal, Dan Carter, Ryan Crotty, Israel Dagg, Andy Ellis, Kahn Fotuali’i, Robbie Fruean, Zac Guildford, Willi Heinz, Sean Maitland, Tom Marshall, Adam Whitelock, Sonny Bill Williams. Forwards: Nicholas Barrett, Wyatt Crockett, Corey Flynn, Ben Franks, Owen Franks, David Hall, Chris Jack, Quentin MacDonald, Richie McCaw, Andrew Olorenshaw, Jonathan Poff, Kieran Read, Luke Romano, Brad Thorn, Matt Todd, Joe Wheeler, George Whitelock, Sam Whitelock.

Huge task for new coach The Hurricanes always promise so much but have never won a title, despite abundant talent over the years. Can a former Crusader bring a change of fortune? Last year: Rubbish. The only way to describe the performances served up by the Hurricanes last season. They finished in 8th place but it could have been worse. Luck of the Draw: They have a chance to build momentum with three home games and a bye in the first month. The Bulls visit Wellington before the South African trip in the preferred April window. Coach’s Call: Former All Blacks and Crusaders hooker Mark Hammett replaces Colin Cooper at the helm and frustrated Hurricanes fans will be hoping ‘Hammer’ can install some of the Crusaders good fortune. Website: www.hurricanes.co.nz Tickets: www.ticketmaster.co.nz or see website for details.

Hammett’s principles as a coach are old school – it’s all about team culture and becoming better individuals on and off the field.

Phone: 04 389 0020

“These boys know how to play footy but we want to develop a culture we are proud of and develop a great learning environment. We need to focus on how hard we work each week and the professionalism we put into that. It doesn’t matter if it’s on the training field or how you act in public. I see off-field expectations can often be greater than on-field expectations.”

NEW CRUSADE: Mark Hammett has it all in front of him to revitalise the Hurricanes franchise.

Hammett is very much a realist and is under no illusion as to the difficulty of the task he has ahead of him, trying to turn a group of talented and under-performing individuals into title contenders.

Contact: PO Box 7201, Wellington South

“There is no doubt there are differences between the two cultures. We are different people and there is pride in different things. The big thing we need to watch is whether the culture is healthy or poisonous. To be honest I am not too concerned about what has been at the Hurricanes. I am more interested in where we are heading.” Hammett will look to his All Blacks in Ma’a Nonu, Cory Jane, Conrad Smith, Hosea Gear, Victor Vito and Andrew Hore to provide the on-field spark but lesser known squad members like lock Mark Reddish, prop Michael Bent and NZ Under-20 reps Julian Savea, Charlie Ngatai and Alapati Leuia will have to step up if the Hurricanes want to match the big guns of Super Rugby. The horrendous leg injury last year to All Blacks halfback Piri Weepu’s means he will miss at least 10 weeks of the season but Hammett has faith in a talented trio fighting it out for Weepu’s jersey. “Obviously we will miss Piri because he is a great halfback with the ability to play 10. Certainly his injury lowers the depth at halfback but the positive is that when he does come back he is going to be fizzing and raring to go with six or seven games to go. But we do have Tyson Keats, Chris Eaton, and TJ Perenara (wider training squad) who all need to keep stepping up and pushing the boundaries. They need to understand the game we want to play but I am pretty confident with the group we have got.” Who’s New: Serge Lilo will stiffen the resolve of the loose forwards after a good campaign with the Blues, while rising star Julian Savea has a chance to prove he is capable at this level. Who’s Through: Scott Waldrom, David Smith, Tamati Ellison and Willie Ripia all gave good service to the Hurricanes and there must be doubts whether their replacements are as capable. HURRICANES SQUAD: Backs: Aaron Cruden, Chris Eaton, Hosea Gear, Cory Jane, Tyson Keats, Daniel Kirkpatrick, Alapati Leiua, Charlie Ngatai, Ma’a Nonu, Julian Savea, Conrad Smith, Andre Taylor, Piri Weepu. Forwards: Michael Bent, James Broadhurst, Dane Coles, Laurence Corlett, Jason Eaton, Jacob Ellison, Bryn Evans, Andrew Hore, Jack Lam, Faifili Levave, Serge Lilo, Karl Lowe, Anthony Perenise, Mark Reddish, John Schwalger, Rodney So’oialo, Jeremy Thrush, Neemia Tialata, Victor Vito.

Pride on the line The once feared Highlanders have lost their mana after three years outside the top 10. New coach Jamie Joseph is determined to stop the slide. Last Year: Only once before, way back in 1997, have the Highlanders finished as low as last year’s 12th position and they tested the patience and the support of their loyal fan base on more than a couple of occasions last season. They managed just three wins but were at least competitive in most games. Luck of the Draw: No luck sorry. Round three they are off to South Africa to take on the dreaded Bulls and Stormers before rushing home to host the Crusaders. But if they can get through that with a fit squad, they do have a reasonable finish. Coach’s Call: Jamie Joseph walks into his new role with a franchise in crisis, years of poor results and a squad of mercenaries new to Dunedin. But he has taken inspiration from the Green Bay Packers, who were in a similar situation before going all the way to win this year’s Super Bowl. Website: www.highlandersrugby.co.nz Tickets: www.ticketdirect.co.nz, 0800 CARISBROOK or see website for more details Contact: PO Box 6070, Dunedin 9054 Phone: 03 425 9985

“We have 26 players who are not from Dunedin and that is a dynamic no other New Zealand team is contending with. On top of that I have 12 support staff from outside the region. We are like the Green Bay Packers coming into a town where most of the team has no association with the area. It is very new but also refreshing for the players.” Joseph knows motivating players hardly brimming with confidence is a huge challenge. “That is the dynamic I am dealing with. They haven’t had success for over eight years but 10 years ago they had 13 All Blacks in their team and made the

final. This time we have two All Blacks so the environment is hugely different and we were trying to entice players to come down here who would have preferred to play for other franchises. It has been getting harder every year to get players to play for the Highlanders when the team is not performing. We accept that and know what we have to deal with. It’s all about building a team up with the guys we have got, to go out there and play committed, play with passion and play to win.” The jewel in the Highlanders crown is one-test All Black Colin Slade, who unfortunately fractured his jaw in a pre-season game against the Blues and will miss the first month of the season. Despite the injury, Joseph believes the highly skilled first-five will make a huge impression after his move south from the Crusaders. “He is clearly going to be one of our key players and is totally professional. No one player is going to take this team through on his own but I am very mindful that Colin has ambitions and goals to be an All Black. I am not putting any pressure on him. He needs to get his body right and get out there and play some good rugby and if he does that he will be an integral part of the team.” Who’s New: Slade has moved from the Crusaders to get game time and will be determined to prove he should be Dan Carter’s backup man in the All Blacks. Sevens star Kurt Baker is a rare talent and should prosper on the hard grounds in his first taste of Super Rugby. Who’s Through: All Black Israel Dagg has jumped ship to the Crusaders to boost his World cup aspirations and will be sorely missed. Handy forwards Steven Setephano and Hayden Triggs have moved north to the Chiefs.

Talented Tahs lead Aussie charge The Waratahs have never won a Super Rugby title, despite a wealth of talent and resources. Last season they showed some real capability and look likely again in 2011.

WAR ATA H S

hooker Adam Freier has been shunted out to the Rebels, leaving the promising Tatafu Polota-Nau and Damien Fitzpatrick to scrap over his jersey.

Last Year: High expectations to reach the final ended against the rampant Stormers in the semis. The Tahs showed a depth of talent across the park previously lacking, plus world class finishers out wide in Drew Mitchell, Kurtley Beale and Lachie Turner. Luck of the Draw: Not the worst possible start for the Sydneysiders with an opening clash in Melbourne against the fired-up Rebels, followed by the Reds at home and the Crusaders away in Christchurch. But this is a class outfit capable of handling any challenges. What’s New: Former Wallaby centre Ryan Cross joins from the Force and will form a classy midfield combination with Berrick Barnes. Young Auckland winger Atieli Pakalani is a surprise selection but has blinding pace to burn. WONDER WING: Wallaby Drew Mitchell can be a match winner for the Waratahs.

Who’s Through: Dependable lock Will Caldwell has been laid low with Crohn’s disease and will miss the entire campaign. The Waratahs most capped

REDS Last Year: The Reds finished fifth in their best performance since 2002 and at times played sublime attacking rugby, choreographed by the little maestro Quade Cooper.

Who’s Through: Inspirational flanker Daniel Braid’s return to the Blues is a hammer blow to the Reds chances. Braid was a world class operator at ruck time and in his trademark loose field support play, but his off-field leadership and demanding attention to detail may be an even greater loss for the Queenslanders.

Luck of the Draw: The Western Force first up in Brisbane is a dream start to get early points, before a mouth-watering derby against perennial foes the Waratahs in Sydney. Get through that challenge and the Reds will have the early momentum needed to be a contender in 2011. What’s New: Lock James Horwill returns from a lengthy injury break to regain the captaincy from outstanding halfback Will Genia. North Harbour five-eighth Michael Harris will have plenty of motivation to prove the Blues were wrong to ignore him. The former NZ Under-20 rep has an Australian grandmother and Wallaby’s coach Robbie Deans is a fan.

SUPER COOPER: Quade Cooper sparked the Reds into an exciting attacking unit last season. www.superrugby.co.nz

brumbies Last Year: Much was expected of the Brumbies after they recruited Matt Giteau and Rocky Elsom, but a final placing of sixth was disappointing. The Brumbies have not made the semis since they won their second title in 2004. Luck of the Draw: Perennial slow starters the Chiefs are first up at home then two Aussie derbies the Brumbies should win. They got lucky with the South African trip drawn straight after their second bye, which means an extra week to freshen up and get over niggling injuries. What’s New: Livewire openside Julian Salvi is back after a successful stint in England with Bath. He will be in direct competition for the No 7 jersey vacated by George Smith with 19-year-old Michael Hooper and Colby Faingaa. Wallaby prop Dan Palmer joins from the Waratahs and will add muscle to the front row.

saviour salvi: Julian Salvi returns from Bath to replace George Smith.

Who’s Through: Legendary flanker Smith has said au revoir for Toulon after 11 seasons at the Brumbies and will be sorely missed. New Rebels captain Stirling Mortlock is another veteran to leave the Brumbies behind.

western force Last Year: Dreadful. Internal ructions around former coach John Mitchell and an appalling injury toll didn’t help, but four wins and a final placing of 13th is not good enough. On the bright side, two of the wins were against the Crusaders and the Stormers when the team clicked at home in Perth. Luck of the Draw: The Force have drawn a shocker with the timing of their two byes. One is too early in round two, while the other is not until

flying winger: The Force will want to see plenty of this from new signing David Smith.

round 13, so the coaching staff will be praying they do not have a repeat of last year’s horrendous injury run. What’s New: Former Blues and Hurricanes winger David Smith is a competitive character but has never kicked on since a promising start to his career. This is his big chance to prove he can consistently perform at this level. Who’s Through: The midfield pairing of Ryan Cross and Sam Harris will be hard to replace, especially the aggression and attitude Cross brings to every team he plays for.

rebe ls Last year: There was no last year of course. The Rebels spent the year scouring the globe for a squad of players who will be up against it in their first season in the competition. It’s impossible to tell how they’ll go as they are a completely unknown quantity but if they can keep their top 15 on the park they may cause a few surprises as they have plenty of talent throughout the squad. Luck of the Draw: The Rebels begin with two home games against former teams of coach Rod Macqueen in the Waratahs and Brumbies, before a trip to Hamilton to take on the Chiefs and two further home games. It is a good draw for a new franchise, as early momentum is vital to attract a fan base in the rugby wilderness of Melbourne. Players to Watch: Former England first-five or fullback Danny Cipriani is at the crossroads of a once promising career. He needs to make headlines for his on-field performances rather than his nightclub antics. Former Welsh No 8 Gareth Delve is a quality player, as is blindside flanker Jarrod Saffy who has played for England. Back from a long injury lay-off is veteran centre Stirling Mortlock. If he regains some of his old steel and stays injury free, he will be an inspiration to this team of mercenaries. Former All Blacks tighthead Greg Somerville will ensure the Rebels are competitive at scrum time.

WAYWARD GENIUS: Maverick English star Danny Cipriani needs to fire for the Rebels.

Bulls out to defend their title Despite a poor international season for the Springboks last year, the South African sides look set for another big Super Rugby season.

B UL L S Last year: It was perhaps the Bulls’ finest Super 14 campaign to date and included the public relations masterstroke of taking the semi-final and final to Soweto after Loftus Versfeld was taken over by FIFA prior to football’s World Cup. They were worthy champions for the third time in four years. Luck of the Draw: Away games against the Lions and Cheetahs to start will require grit for no other reason that they are derby clashes in the back yards of South African rivals. These matches are traditionally tough, but the Bulls have the class and determination to get through those challenges and build a head of steam prior to spending most of April on the road.

Last year: The Stormers enjoyed the best campaign in the history of the franchise as they charged into the final on the back of the meanest defence in the Super 14. They achieved the feat of beating all the New Zealand sides but were always going to be no more than guests at the Bulls’ emotionally charged party in Soweto. Luck of the Draw: It’s not ideal starting with a bye as you usually rely on them for a little respite. However, the Stormers have taken a positive view of it as it gives them an additional week to prepare. They also play their first 10 games in

CENTRE STAGE: Jean de Villiers brings some much needed experience to the Stormers backline.

26

Who’s Through: Hooker Bandise Maku has headed for the Lions after not getting much of a look-in other than off the bench, while flyhalf JacquesLouis Potgieter will now be bolstering the Sharks’ reserves. Tighthead prop Bees Roux, who has to defend himself against a murder charge, has been suspended for the time being. South Africa and start with the Lions, Cheetahs and Highlanders. You’d have to back them to build some momentum.

S to r M E R S

Who’s New: Springbok wing Bjorn Basson is by far the biggest capture and finally provides a replacement for Bryan Habana following the latter’s decision to jump ship to the Stormers for 2010. Basson broke Springbok legend Carel du Plessis’s Currie Cup try-scoring record last year. He mercifully escaped a ban for inadvertent use of a prohibited stimulant alongside team-mate Chiliboy Ralepelle. Former Northampton lock Juandré Kruger is also on board.

www.superrugby.co.nz

Who’s New: Springbok centre Jean de Villiers returns after a spell with Munster in Ireland, while CJ Van der Linde has also given them a world class prop option. Van der Linde can pack down either side of the scrum and adds to their depth in a key area. There are a number of youngsters, including flyhalf Gary van Aswegen that may feature. Who’s Through: Experienced flyhalf Willem de Waal has headed for Italy, while fullback Joe Pietersen now campaigns with Bayonne in France. Argentinian prop Eusebio Guinazu has also moved on.

S H AR K S Last year: A disastrous start to the campaign in which they lost their first five games put paid to any hope that the Sharks had of challenging for the title. However, they recovered well to finish strongly, including a convincing win over the Stormers in Durban. The good form continued into the Currie Cup, where they were crowned champions. Luck of the Draw: It may sound like the ideal first fixture, but the Cheetahs have turned into a bit of a bogey side for the Sharks. Thereafter it’s the Blues at home before embarking on a four-week tour, starting with matches against the Western Force and Melbourne Rebels on the Australian leg. If the Sharks play it right, they can hit the ground running.

and inside centre Meyer Bosman gives them options among the decision-makers. Former Stormers lock Ross Skeate and Montpellier tighthead prop Eugene vanStaden have also arrived to ensure their grunt stands the test of injury. Who’s Through: They’ve said goodbye to a host of players, including lock Johann Muller, scrumhalf Rory Kockott, utility back Ruan Pienaar, tighthead prop Deon Carstens, centres Waylon Murray and Andries Strauss, flyhalves Monty Dumond and Andy Goode, and prop Pat Cilliers.

STEP UP: Springbok flyhalf Meyer Bosman’s move from the Cheetahs to the Sharks will be a test of his talents.

Who’s New: The Sharks have boosted their depth among the inside backs and tight five. Scrumhalf Conrad Hoffmann, flyhalf Jacques-Louis Potgieter

LI O NS Last year: Let’s put a positive spin on it – the only way in 2011 is up! They lost all 13 league games last year and were a shambles. But things have changed for the better under the astute coaching of John Mitchell, while there has been a cash injection with a new equity partner and sponsorship by MTN. Things can only and will surely get better. Luck of the Draw: The Lions only play their first tour match in mid-May, suggesting that they have plenty of time in South Africa to pick up points and bring themselves in contention. However, they start with matches against last year’s finalists in the Bulls and Stormers, and one can’t help but wonder whether there is enough quality in the Johannesburg outfit.

CH E ETAH S Last year: The Cheetahs have always struggled for resources and that is why last year’s 10th place was actually seen as a positive. They achieved it on the back of a good finish, with three victories and a draw from their last four games. However, they were still looking for a sponsor early in 2011, bringing us back to the concern about their resources. Luck of the Draw: As the conference system goes, they could not ask for a tougher start than playing the Sharks (away), Bulls (home) and then the Stormers (away) in their first three games. However, the heaps of derbies may well be a help rather than a hindrance as it tends to be an equalising factor. Who’s New: Andries Strauss, who became a Springbok against the Barbarians at Twickenham

Who’s New: There will be a lot of attention focused on new Springbok flyhalf Elton Jantjies after he was brought through in the Currie Cup, but this is a big step up and he may find his first season of Super Rugby tough going. Butch James is due to arrive in May, which will limit his participation. The signing of hooker Bandise Maku from the Bulls and wing Lionel Mapoe from the Cheeteahs were good pieces of business, while scrumhalves Rory Kockott (Sharks) and Michael Bondesio (Leopards) may also prove useful acquisitions. Springbok flank Wikus van Heerden also re-joined during the course of last year. Who’s Through: Springbok prop Heinke van der Merwe is a significant loss to Leinster, while American loose forward Todd Clever has also moved on. Carlos Spencer’s form in his late 30s did not quite match his coaching ability and the latter is all the Lions are likely to rely on him for in future. Earl Rose has also moved to Griquas. in December, has joined from the Sharks to bolster their midfield options. Lock Wilhelm Steenkamp, who was loaned to the Sharks by the Bulls last year, has gone to Bloemfontein. They’ve also picked up a few players who were surplus to requirements elsewhere, including Western Province midfielder Morgan Newman and wing-cum-fullback Fabian Juries. The latter re-joins them. Fullback Earl Rose has also joined Griquas from the Lions. Who’s Through: Springbok back Meyer Bosman is a major loss. Bosman, who can play at centre and flyhalf, never quite reached his potential at the Cheetahs and a move to the Sharks was a good call for his career. The Lions also swooped for wing Lionel Mapoe to bring an end to a long-running contractual dispute between the player and the Cheetahs. www.superrugby.co.nz
