Blockbuster matches at Eden Park and Westpac Stadium are the eye-catching features of a 2013 NRL campaign which has all the ingredients to become a defining season for the Vodafone Warriors.

The seeds for a sea change can be traced back to the critical strategic initiatives announced by owners Eric Watson and Sir Owen Glenn and the board in July last year.

THE ULTIMATE SUPPORTER The Vodafone Superfan programme has reached juggernaut-like status since being launched as a feature at Vodafone Warriors home games. Indeed the ubiquitous Mount Smart Joker, given the cape as the ultimate Vodafone Superfan last year, has lifted the concept’s profile to another level with his ability to turn up in costume at all manner of events in and out of season (not to mention his prolific social media skills). Now the 2013 Vodafone Superfan has been brought into sharp focus with eyecatching promotion popping up on bus backs around Auckland. The campaign will have a difference this year with Vodafone Superfan activity being specifically centred on the blockbuster home games against the Sydney Roosters at

Eden Park on March 16 and the Bulldogs at Westpac Stadium in Wellington on May 11 plus the Vodafone Warriors’ last home game of the regular season against Canberra. In keeping with the Vodafone Superfan’s prolific growth it will be tailored for the grand occasion, no more so than the historic first Vodafone Warriors home game being played outside Auckland against the Bulldogs in round nine. Vodafone is match day sponsor of the clash in the Capital.

VODAFONE WARRIORS COMMUNITY Plans to take the Vodafone Warriors’ message to the Pacific came to fruition just months after the idea was conceived. When the club, led by owners Eric Watson and Sir Owen Glenn, announced a raft of initiatives last July, they and the board also made clear their intention to give back to rugby league’s wider community by visiting neighbouring Pacific countries. By late January the crusade was a reality. In two action-packed days in both Samoa and Tonga, thousands of primary and secondary school pupils were exposed to the club and the game during school visits and community carnivals. In Samoa, captain Simon Mannering and Jerome Ropati combined with the legendary Stacey Jones and Ruben Wiki to raise awareness. And in Tonga, NRL players Manu Vatuvei and Konrad Hurrell were joined by Vodafone Junior Warrior Albert Vete and the club’s foundation captain Dean Bell working with enthralled school kids.

CULTURE, WORK, BOOKS Educational initiatives aimed at school children have always been a staple feature of the Vodafone Warriors’ community programmes but in the past few months it’s the players who have been the targets. In December the entire first grade squad embraced Warriors Work Week,

ITS MANY FACES AND PLACES Vodafone Warriors membership wears so many different faces and comes in so many different packages. It might range from the blue collar die-hards who have been sitting in the South Stand season after season no matter what the weather or the team’s fortunes. It could just as readily be those typical old rugby league faces, players of yesteryear, seemingly locked to their seats around the West Stand’s tunnel area; perhaps it’s mum, dad and the kids in the family area; or those with more disposable income who sign up for the packages in the Club Lounge in the East Stand or the corporate suites on the opposite side. So many different faces watching their team and supporting it the only way they know how. At the core of the experience, there’s a constant theme. For all members it’s about loyalty, commitment and devotion, the qualities that separate True Warriors from the rest.

NEW ARRIVALS

Look through the list of the Vodafone Warriors’ 177 players and few came to the club as NRL premiership winners with former clubs. Greg Alexander, Matthew Ridge and Quentin Pongia were examples in the early years and later the Vodafone Warriors would become home for Kevin Campion, Tony Martin, Steve Price, Ruben Wiki, Brent Tate and Shaun Berrigan. Now for the first time the Vodafone Warriors have two players – Melbourne’s Dane Nielsen and Todd Lowrie – from the same premiership-winning side in the same season (Brent Tate and Shaun Berrigan were in Brisbane’s champion 2006 side but weren’t at the Vodafone Warriors together). To Nielsen and Lowrie, add decorated Kiwi international Thomas Leuluai, who enjoyed title-winning experiences with Wigan in the English Super League. Nielsen, Lowrie and Leuluai go into the 2013 season as the Vodafone Warriors’ critical acquisitions, joined by fledgling first graders Dominique Peyroux

It’s a story which has been rolled out a few times lately but it always warrants being retold. It did so by drawing on its stable of extreme athletes to turn on a gate-crashing display at the end of a Vodafone Warriors training session. This wasn’t a media event. It was never meant to be.
