FOREWORD BY PRIME MINISTER OF NEW ZEALAND Hon John Key

TOO OFTEN WE THINK OF WINTER AND GROAN. WE IMAGINE THE SHORTER DAYS, THE COLD AND THE DAMP, THE STORMS AND THE SOUTHERLIES, THE POWER BILLS AND ELECTRIC BLANKETS.

new people to meet, and new experiences to try. There has never been a better time to enjoy them. With overseas travel looking less attractive at the moment, home is a great place for a holiday.

But that’s just one way to look at it.

That’s why, as Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism, I’m keen to encourage Kiwis from all walks of life to see more of New Zealand this winter, to visit the parts of this land that you have never been to, and to enjoy the season with fresh eyes.

Every week I spend time on the road visiting places and meeting people in communities all over our beautiful country. And in the winter months, New Zealand is often at its best. There’s the crispness of a sunny day after a morning frost. The beauty of our mountains blanketed in snow. The buzz of a winter sportsfield thick with kids. And for those on holiday, winter is a special time. The traffic is not so busy, accommodation is easier to find, and New Zealand has a very different story to tell – from the thrills and spills of our alpine playgrounds, to the cosy fireplaces of a thousand wineries, restaurants, and country pubs. Wherever you go in New Zealand there are always new places to visit,

Best wishes and happy travels.

John Key PRIME MINISTER and MINISTER OF TOURISM

Whether it’s a few of my favourite winter holiday spots – skiing in Queenstown, enjoying a hot pool in Hanmer Springs, trout-fishing in Taupo – or any number of special places and things to do around New Zealand, there are 4 million ways to enjoy a great Kiwi winter. So I hope that in coming months, you will find some time to get out of the house, hit the road, and explore our country in one of its most beautiful seasons. And I hope that this magazine will help you on your way.

COOL SEASON PACKED WITH WARMING EVENTS

PLUNGING INTO WINTER EVENT WEBSITES AROUND NEW ZEALAND FEELS A BIT LIKE DIVING INTO A SACK OF SURPRISES AND LANDING ON SOME GOODIES. By Susan Buckland Take the Winter Sports NZ event. It runs from 22 to 30 August and will attract top winter sport athletes to compete on the alpine slopes of Central Otago. But here’s the thing. You don’t need to be a skier, snowboarder or ice skater to enjoy it. Party zones will be set up in Wanaka and Queenstown throughout Winter Sports NZ. And in the great outdoors of “Central” plenty of off-piste adventures are on tap.

indoor entertainment. From Britain comes “Stomp”, a fresh and funny show to kick off the season on 26 May.

The Queenstown Winter Festival, from 26 June to 5 July, is also guaranteed to snap winter blues. The festival celebrates its 35th anniversary this year and opens with a huge party complete with fireworks, mulled wine and entertainment. Mountain activities will be mixed with family entertainment, street parties, live concerts, comedy, theatre and internationally acclaimed performers.

Winter feels milder in the Far North, which makes a camping trip feasible. DOC operates about 250 vehicle access campsite around New Zealand. Many are in glorious spots and you pay from only $3 to $14 a night to enjoy them.

Over in Timaru we have the Mainland Classic, a Winter vehicle rally set to roll on 7 August. Open to “tidy vehicles” (saloons, coupes, convertibles and sports cars) manufactured before 31 December 2002, the participants will drive over the Haast Pass to the West Coast and back through some of the best South Island scenery, stopping en route to enjoy the camaraderie beside a roaring fire. The weekend event finishes with a glass-clinking, function in Gibston Valley. It’s rugby season, of course and your South Island travels may coincide with the All Blacks playing France in Dunedin on June 13 or Italy in Christchurch on 27 June. Earlier in June and just over the port hills Christchurch’s magnificent Lyttleton Harbour will be transformed with a Festival of Lights including a masquerade party, circus performers, music, arts and crafts and local food events. The festival runs from 5 to 14 June. At the top of the South Island the Nelson School of Music is gearing up for a lively Music Festival opening in July. Holiday concerts for children are on the menu. And across Cook Strait Wellington’s absolutely positive wind factor has, it must be acknowledged, contributed to the capital city’s excellent 6 WINTER HOLIDAYS NEW ZEALAND 2009

Auckland, more outdoor oriented when it comes to leisurely pursuits, is likely to find a chunk of the populace heading indoors on 13 June for the concert at the Vector Arena given by the great musical duo of Simon and Garfunkel. It will be their first concert Down Under in 25 years.

Still in the North, Whangarei will be a centre of Maori new year (Matariki) celebrations and other places around the country, such as Hawke’s Bay and Wanganui, are also preparing stimulating events to commemorate the occasion. A series of events will be held during June, beginning on 8 June. In Taranaki, under the eye of its patrician mountain, the popular Taranaki Arts Festival will energise visitors from 23 July to 9 August. The mountain will be looking its magnificent, snow covered best, as will the Tongariro National Park mountains, crowned by Ruapehu where the ski season will be in full swing at both Whakapapa and Turoa. The mountain town of Ohakune buzzes with après-ski life. Over on the northeast coast the Coromandel will be the place to be during 29 and 30 August. It is the time of the Whitianga Scallop Festival. Look forward to an indulgent weekend of local cuisine and rousing entertainment. Fifteen degree daytime temperatures will stave off the chill while ambling through Hawke’s Bay’s wineries and art deco architecture. The Bay of Plenty seaside town of Whakatane has so much sun to go round they sell tins of it for $2.50. But for warming yourself to the bones, don’t go past the mineral pools of Taupo, Rotorua or Hanmer Springs.

Mt Ruapehu is home to the North Island’s only two commercial ski areas, Whakapapa and Turoa, and provides a unique skiing experience on an active volcano which is part of a dual World Heritage Area. Both ski areas have fully sealed access roads and world class facilities, including licensed cafés, retail stores, equipment hire and ski schools. Shuttle services run to the ski areas from each of the main towns and villages surrounding Mt Ruapehu. Happy Valley is a dedicated learner’s area that is separate to the main ski area so beginners can progress at their own pace without worrying about getting in the way of more experienced skiers and snowboarders.

Happy Valley has its own café, rental complex and ski school meeting area and the slow-moving chairlift takes beginners to the top of the slope while giving them a chance to rest their legs. The gentle slope is long enough

However, strong skiers and boarders aren’t neglected as there is a huge variety of terrain, from open runs to gullies and cliffs. Last year was a record-breaking season for the ski tourism industry in New Zealand with over 1.4 million ski passes sold. The outlook for the 2009 season is equally promising which is not surprising really because New Zealand is now firmly established as a world class skiing destination. American Express Queenstown Winter Festival is the biggest winter party in the Southern Hemisphere. The festival celebrates 35 years of winter fun this year with 10 action packed days and unforgettable nights in store. From June 26 to July 5, thousands of visitors will join the Queenstown locals on the streets and ski slopes to celebrate the start of winter. As well as plenty of action

on the snow there will be street parties, fireworks, live concerts and fun for all the family during the 10-day festival. When the festival fun is over Queenstown is still an ideal base to explore some of the South Islands’ most popular ski fields. The Remarkables is surely one of the most spectacular ski destinations in the world and the 45-minute drive from Queenstown is an experience in itself.

By Robert Tighe closing game against Australia in Wellington on September 19. Rugby League is nipping at the heels of Rugby Union in terms of popularity at the moment and the hot ticket for the winter is to Mt Smart Stadium in Auckland to see the Warriors take on Australia’s finest in the NRL. Other options include a trip to Wellington to take in a Phoenix game and experience the unique atmosphere created by their fanatical fans, the Yellow Fever. The A-League kicks off again on August 15.

The National Basketball League continues throughout the country during May and June with the semi-finals and final scheduled for the end of June while the World U19 Basketball Championships will be held in Auckland from July 2-12. For petrolheads, while there is no WRC Rally New Zealand this year, the New Zealand Rally Championship offers top class racing action with rounds in Otago, Whangarei, Wairarapa and Nelson over the coming months.

And if the lady in your life isn’t turned on by any of the above, then maybe netball’s ANZ Championship is the answer. The finals are scheduled for July but before that you can catch the Northern Mystics in action in Auckland, the Waikato/BOP Magic in Rotorua or Tauranga, the Central Pulse in Porirua or Wellington, the Tactix in Christchurch or the Steel in Invercargill. So whatever your sporting passion there is no reason to sit on the sidelines this winter. GET OFF THE COUCH. GET AMONGST IT. GET INVOLVED.

FOR THE

PEOPLE “LAST, LONELIEST, LOVELIEST, EXQUISITE, APART.” THE FAMOUS PHRASE UTTERED BY RUDYARD KIPLING IS OFTEN APPLIED TO FIORDLAND BUT HE WAS REFERRING TO AUCKLAND WHEN HE VISITED IN 1891.

Despite man-made blotches that have since appeared on its landscape Auckland’s natural surroundings remain physically stunning. And, thanks to a decision in 1965, parks for the people have been created close to the two harbours, the low lying hills in between and the miles of scenic coast.

Take Cornwallis Beach, a safe spot for picnics and swimming and now with a restored 200 metre wharf. Cornwallis is part of the Waitakere Ranges, 16,000 hectares of native rainforest and coastline threaded by walking tracks. The Arataki Visitor Centre opens the way. On the east coast Long Bay during winter is blissfully absent of crowds. Further north brings you to Wenderholm, one of the most beautiful of the regional parks. And east of Warkworth is Tawharanui, a farm park and open sanctuary running down to sandy beaches. Winter equates to offpeak rates at the 13 holiday baches in Auckland’s regional parks. All photographed on the ARC website, the baches accommodate from six people in parks like Atiu Creek, Awhitu, Scandrett, Mahurangi and Wenderholm. Off peak rates of $80 per weekday night apply for bach bookings from June to September. The year-round rate of $120 per night applies for

weekend stays. There are also lodges accommodating from to 24, 45, and 85 people in Huia, Whatipu and Hunua. Campers take your pick among the parks. Ambury, Omana, Shakespear, Waharau, Mahurangi…. these are just some with campsites. A website check of the 101 things to do in the ARC parks dishes up something for everyone.

HERE IS A TASTER: • Take the family to Potter Children’s Garden at the Auckland Botanic Gardens • Go floundering on Poukaraka Flats at Whakanewha Regional Park • Test your fitness on the athletics track at Mt Smart Stadium (yep, its another Auckland regional park) • Count the different wader bird footprints in the Ambury Regional Park mudflats • Trek to Tawhitokino beach, accessible only by foot at low tide – and discover a long sandy isolated beach • Follow the Montana Heritage Trail to the largest remaining stand of mature kauri in the Auckland region • With an orienteering map from the Duder Regional Park notice board make your way round 148 hectares of coastal parkland. FOOD FOR THOUGHT!

IMAGES: AUCKLAND REGIONAL COUNCIL

PARKS

More than 40,000 hectares of superb regional parkland, all of it accessed free of charge, is yours to enjoy in the Auckland region. It is divided into 26 Auckland Regional Council (ARC) parks and, given the present constraining economy, they provide a great day or more out.

TASTY TIMES

IN COROMANDEL

First up in May is the Coromandel Home Grown Festival – a tongue-in-cheek take on one of the region’s more legendary crops. A month long celebration leading into Winter featuring the Coromandel’s cuisine, wine, music and arts, the Home Grown Festival features 57 individual events ranging from the Great Coromandel Arts Tour to the Hahei Tractor Bash and the Home Grown Food Trail. New in the seaside town of Whitianga and guaranteed to warm you up this winter is The Lost Spring, Whitianga’s international Spa. The hot natural mineral springs are surrounded by lush native bush and, as well as a full spa treatment complex, there is an excellent restaurant. It is the place to be for thawing winter chills and soothing aches.

In Southern Coromandel, there is the fascinating Windows Walk in the Karangahake Gorge, the opportunity to visit the working Gold Mines of Waihi or to poke around the antique shops of Paeroa. The Coromandel is fast developing a reputation for being the place to go for fresh seafood. Scallops, Oysters, Mussels, Snapper, King and Crayfish. Coromandel’s bounty is yours to enjoy.

Favoured for their intense flavour, there will be more than 100,000 scallops starring along with at least 50 stalls dishing up a wonderful range of local cuisine. The Scallops are opened on the day at the festival. How fresh is that? And by the way, being the so called off-peak season, the competitive accommodation rates in the Coromandel are appetising, too.

As winter draws to a close the Coromandel pulls out the stops for a final celebration, the Whitianga Scallop Festival. Appropriately, the festival is held in the last weekend of August and centre stage are the region’s delectable scallops.

FROM THE TAUPO LAKE FRONT, THE SIGHT OF THE THREE VOLCANOES, RUAPEHU, TONGARIRO AND NGAURUHOE RISING LIKE SENTINELS OVER THE WATER STOPS PEOPLE IN THEIR TRACKS.

The spectacle is completed by the lake, New Zealand’s largest. It fills a crater the size of Singapore in the middle of the North Island and the force of the volcano that gouged the great hole 1800 years ago can only be imagined. Golfers are attracted to the Taupo Centennial Course close to the Waikato River and to the internationally acclaimed Wairakei Golf Course. A range of activity is on offer year round – adventurers head off to kayak, river raft, skydive, bungyjump and jetboat.

In the river eddies, prolific trout flash like arrows and hopeful anglers cast from the shallows. You won’t find any Taupo legendary trout on a restaurant menu. But catching one in the lake or rivers that feed in and out of it is a quintessential Taupo pastime. So is boating. Pleasure craft ply the waters with picnic baskets, barbecues and fishing rods. In the lovely western bays, mostly inaccessible by car, waterfalls tumble over cliffs clinging with bush. Maori were attracted to the Taupo geothermal landscape and resources more than 500 years ago. Time should also be allocated for Ruakuri and Aranui Caves, both distinctly different from the Waitomo Glowworm Cave. ‘Den of Dogs’ is the English translation of Ruakuri, a cave known to Maori at least 400 years ago. And in this cave once inhabited by wild dogs, visitors discover dramatic subterranean scenery, sacred Maori sites and the soft luminescence of thousands of tiny glowworms. Mysterious Aranui Cave, named after Ruruku Aranui who discovered it in 1910, is five minutes drive from the Waitomo Glowworm caves. Cave wetas are at home inside the entrance of this beautiful cave full of stalactites and stalagmites. It certainly is a cave that is rich in Maori myths and legends. ABOUT KORORAREKA IN THE BAY OF ISLANDS. Whalers and sealers were swooping on the waterside settlement where previously only Maori had lived. The newcomers turned it into a provisioning port and – as far as the missionaries were concerned – a den of iniquity. Ramshackle hotels sprang up along the waterfront and alcohol and bawdy shenanigans were the order of the day and night. The lawless town soon became known as Hellhole of the Pacific. With its prime location Kororareka continued to expand until New Zealand’s first capital, at nearby Okiato, shifted south to Auckland. Then in 1845 Maori chiefs, Hone Heke and Kawiti attacked

the town which had been renamed Russell the previous year. Bullet holes fired during the fierce battle of Kororareka are still visible in the weatherboards of Christ Church, New Zealand’s oldest surviving church. Today, however, the cry of seabirds is about the loudest sound you’ll hear in the birthplace of the nation. The boats head back to Paihia, home to Waitangi National Reserve, where the lives of European and Maori New Zealanders were intertwined in 1840 with the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi. STEAM THROUGH WINTER IN ROTORUA

NEVER MIND THE WEATHER. ROTORUA’S ADRENALIN-PUMPING ACTIVITIES AND THERMAL POOLS ATTRACT YEAR-ROUND VISITORS. WHETHER YOU AND THE KIDS ARE ZORBING (ROLLING DOWN HILL IN A PLASTIC BALL) OR SHWEEBING (RACING ALONG IN A HUMAN POWERED MONORAIL) OR BLASTING ALONG IN A THREE WHEEL LUGE, THE THRILLS IN THE THERMAL CITY COME THICK AND FAST. Rafting and kayaking are also popular, all season activities. Trips on the Kaituna River include the seven-metre Tutea Falls, the world’s highest commercially rafted waterfall.

Winter and soaking in a thermal pool are a delicious combination. And for silky smooth skin wallow in a mud bath. Or indulge in a spot of mud therapy. Rotorua’s thermal valley of Whakarewarewa remains a prime attraction with mighty Pohutu geyser blowing his stack and furiously boiling mud pools creating a fantastic fusion of steam.

And for a fresh challenge try white water sledging. First attempted in the 1980s, this activity involves manoeuvring down rapids and past rocks on a boogieboard-style sledge.

It rarely snows in Rotorua city but Mt Tarawera often gets a dumping. A helicopter ride to the top reveals the huge crater blasted by the devastating eruption of 1886. A sure-fire way to warm up is to hike the 1111 metres to the summit. 30 WINTER HOLIDAYS NEW ZEALAND 2009

The Rotorua region has no fewer than 14 lakes, all within easy driving distance. Walks around the lakes provide lovely views. And it costs nothing to explore Rotorua’s challenging mountain biking trails and walking tracks. Whakarewarewa Forest, a five minute drive from the centre, has free public access. For a dose of sulphurous air walk around Sulphur Point in the south eastern corner of Lake Rotorua. IMAGES: DESTINATION ROTORUA

Gentler family pursuits are easily found in Rotorua. Take the kids to hand-feed farm animals and to see kiwis up close. Or to the interactive film in the Rotorua Museum of Art and History which explores the volatile thermal landscape. You plummet 13 kilometres into the earth’s cauldron as the film rolls out. The seats shudder and soar for added, dramatic effect while tectonic plates collide and Mt Tarawera’s cataclysmic explosion are laid bare.

www.rotoruaNZ.com

All this builds up an appetite. There was a time when it would have been a challenge to find a decent cappuccino in Rotorua. Now the thermal city has a café culture with lattes to rival some of the frothiest on Auckland’s Ponsonby Road. Family restaurants abound.
