Cover Story: Erno John Hormillosa
Several months ago, when Fil-Am Who’s Who managing editor, Myrna Gutierrez, told me that sought-after choreographer and event director Erno John Hormillosa would grace the cover of the April edition of the magazine, I only thought of two things: polished work and real passion for the craft. Those two things, I believe, describe him best.

In the multipurpose hall-turned-rehearsal venue at the Chapel of San Lorenzo Ruiz in Manhattan, I first met Erno, who was then teaching female runway model-wannabes how to walk in high heels for the upcoming Sampaguita Ball. During the rehearsals, the ladies—who were actually volunteers at the chapel—were wearing really tall stiletto heels—and so was Erno! Pretty comfortable in those ferocious heeled pumps, Erno, probably then four-inch taller than his real height, simulated with utmost confidence how to walk the catwalk, while his zealous students followed behind him. Erno and the ladies practiced two or three nights, around two or three hours each. If the amateur models’ polished modeling of the intricate Filipiniana dresses on the evening of the ball was any indication, Erno—given a short period of time—did an excellent job. Besides guiding those lovely women how to strut like supermodels, Erno also instilled discipline in them. When focus on the work at hand was needed during the rehearsals, focus on the work at hand was what was delivered—no more, no less. “...professionalism, dedication, and intense training were the tools that helped him get to the top of his game...” observes Fil-Am Who’s Who contributor Maricar CP Hampton in her story on Erno on pages eight and nine.

Great Hospitality, Strength in Kindness
articipating in the Order of the Knights of Rizal’s 20th International Assembly in one of the “Wonder Cities of the World,” the Heritage City of Vigan, Ilocos Sur, was very memorable and a superb experience. The accommodation that Judge Victor G. Sison and Irene G. Sison arranged for us at Ciudad Fernandina Hotel was phenomenal. Dr. Benito Purungganan and his wife, Yolanda Guerrero Purungganan, who is also the sister of my best friend Irene Guerrero Sison, own the hotel.

Kindness is Strength “When I was young, I used to admire intelligent people. As I grow older, I adore kind people.” - Abraham J. Heschel
With Ciudad Fernandina’s beautiful architecture and location; very clean hallways and rooms; sumptuous breakfast buffet; and courteous, attentive, accommodating, and always smiling staff, one truly felt he or she was part of the family. Indeed, it’s an understatement to say that this hotel is a home away from home.
W
A welcome dinner was thrown for us—delegates of the 20th International Assembly of the Order of the Knights of Rizal—in the evening of our arrival. Ciudad Fernandina went all out in its hospitality. There were drinks galore—bottles of Blue Labels, Chivas Regal, and Royal Salute. A fatted calf was barbecued in our presence. Capiz oysters, something most of us never had eaten before, were served. The street across the hotel was blocked and the party went on till past midnight.
To be kind after being forced to wait in a long line because of a problem in the system, for instance, takes a great deal of understanding and self-control. To remain kind and loving at your core even when your heart has been broken over and over again seems to border on stupidity, doesn’t it? But it isn’t stupid—it’s being strong, hopeful, constructive, and beautiful.
hen we were young, it was easy to be amazed by how much older people know. As we grow older, though, we come to realize that knowing a lot comes from years of study and experience. Kindness is harder to come by. It takes determination to remain kind.
Today I resolve to be kind, even if I begin to feel overwhelmed.

Erno John Hormillosa: Walks the Talk

a milestone in anyone’s life. Turning 50isIt’salways the perfect time to assess how one
has lived his or her life and still be able to plan for the future. For Erno John Hormillosa, renowned choreographer, pageant director, and fashion and floral arranger, professionalism, dedication, and intense training were the tools that helped him get to the top of his game, yet despite his success he remains humble enough not to let fame get into his head. “I have a lot of accomplishments but I don’t make a big deal out of it because for me it’s like a very ordinary thing,” he said.
Even as a young boy, Erno, who is turning 50 this month, knew that dancing was his passion but back then he didn’t take it seriously. It was all fun and games.“Mahilig talaga ako sa dancing but I didn’t concentrate on it. It was just for fun. Ang hilig ko kase karate, basketball, and motorcycle—things my father didn’t like at all. We always argued,” he shared. dancer, Erno began his classical training at the Asagea professional of nine, when he took up ballet at Rosita Dureza Ballet
School in Iloilo City. He also studied tap dance, jazz, modern dance, and ballroom and folk dance. Erno also attended workshops at the Cultural Center of the Philippines and the Asian American Dance Theater in New York. He has been an active member and soloist for the Folklorico Filipino Dance Company in New York since 1989. As a representative of the dance group, he joined various dance tours that took him around the United States, Canada, and Portugal. “Because of my
in Iloilo City, Erno is the second in a Raised brood of five born to Ernestro Hormillosa
Jr., a retired operating room technician, and Ferolyn Fernandez-Hormillosa, a retired nurse. At age 18, Erno, through a full-time scholarship from the Kawilihan Dance Troupe, earned his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of San Agustin in Iloilo City. Shortly after graduation in 1985, Erno, together with his siblings, joined his parents in the U.S. “I came here with my entire family; my parents were smart enough to make sure that when we arrive in N.Y., we were all prepared to face new ventures and challenges. We were all very grounded and well educated that all of us were able to work immediately,” he said.
“Dream big; have your own identity; and make a difference in our society.” training and experience as a dancer and performing artist, I have travelled to different places and performed all over Asia, Europe, Canada, and the U.S.,” he said. One of the highlights of his career was his exposure to other well-known choreographers and dancers locally and internationally. “I even performed before my idol, RussianAmerican dancer and choreographer Mikhail Barrysnikov, in 1991. A year later, I represented the Philippines at the Kentucky Performing Arts in Louisville, Kentucky via the Asian American Ballet Society of N.Y. I have also performed at Lincoln Center,” Erno told Fil-Am Who’s Who. up in a family full of dancers, he recalls how he would at a Growing very young age dance to any music. “I was always a dancing kid.
It was in my heart,” he said. “My entire family can dance and play the piano and other musical instruments. I studied piano for six years. It helped me to be musically inclined, especially when you’re a dancer and choreographer.” Erno reveals his favorite dancing style is ballet. “It’s the best form of dancing and the discipline is tremendous—you will carry the fundamentals throughout your life,” he explained. “Once you’re a ballet dancer, you can transform yourself in any way whether it’s fashion show modeling or something else. ‘Yung body language ko I can adjust it because of its flexibility, and yung tindig—it’s different.” When it comes to life’s challenges, Erno keeps a positive attitude. There are always intrigues, controversies, and jealousy in my craft. I’m used to that, but when you’ve got God’s gift, talent, and knowledge, no one can take that away from you. It’s up to you to think of how to take care and preserve it. I’m always focused and determined,” he said. He also believes there’s more to life than just riches and glory. “It’s not how much money you have in your bank account or degree of education you earned. The most important thing is what you enjoy the most in life that makes you a successful person,” Erno said.
It was in 2003 when he started playing an active role in the Fil-Am community, where he often would donate his time, talent, and resources for a good cause. A staunch support of Lesbian, Gay, Transgender, and Bisexual (LBGT) rights, he believes that aside from awareness and education, “humanity” is the most pressing issue among LGBT communities. “Everyone, no matter what orientation, should be treated equally and that comes along with compassion and love,” he declared. On top of his dancing career, Erno holds a full-time job as an executive assistant to the vice president at ABC Realty, a real estate management firm, where he manages 23
high-end buildings in NYC. “I’m proud to say I’m the only Asian—and Filipino—in the company. I’ve been in the real estate business for almost 25 years.” also shines in the areas of film and Erno theater, which include participation in local productions of Annie, Waves of a Distant Shores, and in the Off-Broadway production of Bathroom Confessions. In 2009, he did a documentary film with the legendary actress, Batangas City Governor, Vilma Santos.
how he is able to balance both Asked worlds—real estate and the arts? “Time
management is very important, together with discipline and studying,” he said. “In real estate, common sense and problem solving is a must! In the arts, whether I’m the choreographer, director, or emcee, I treat it as hobby and passion. I separate the two very well in terms of my work ethics.” As if his life isn’t hectic enough, Erno still finds time to read and spend quality time with his family. Erno is looking forward to retirement. He said he hopes to start a small business venture while looking after his aging parents. “In the next four or five years, I’d love to go back home and take care of my parents because I owe to them who I am today.” For the young aspiring dancers who would like to follow in his footsteps, he gladly offers this advice: “Dream big; have your own identity; and make a difference in our society.”

Managing Peripheral Vascular Disease (PVD) Part One By Michael Avaricio, MD FACP, FACC
M
ore than eight million Americans have Peripheral Vascular Disease (PVD). It’s one of the most common and dangerous cardiovascular diseases. People with PVD have two or six times greater chance of death from a heart attack or stroke. Both men and women at high risk of developing Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD), on the other hand, may benefit from a PAD screening test so that the disease can be identified and treated early. PAD symptoms include: •
Painful cramps in your hip, thigh, or calf muscles after an activity such as walking or climbing stairs;
•
Leg numbness;
•
Coldness in your lower leg or foot, especially when compared with the other side;
•
Sores on your toes, feet, or legs that won’t heal;
•
A change in the color of your legs;
•
Hair loss or slower hair growth on your feet and legs;
•
Slower growth of your toenails;
•
Shiny skin on your legs;
•
No pulse or weak pulse in your legs or feet; and
•
Erectile dysfunction in men.
12 FIL-AM WHO’S WHO
april 2015
If PAD progresses, pain may even occur when you’re at rest or lying down, which may be intense enough to disrupt sleep. Hanging your legs over the edge of your bed or walking around your room may temporarily relieve the pain. If you have leg pain, numbness, or other symptoms, don’t dismiss them as a normal part of aging. Call your doctor to determine if these symptoms are vascular in nature. A PAD screening test can also help determine your risk for Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) by assessing your risk for PVD. The test, which takes around 30 minutes, is painless and noninvasive; it includes an abdominal aortic aneurysm test; an ultrasound review of carotid arteries; and an Ankle Brachial Index (ABI). The abdominal aortic aneurysm ultrasound test scans the aorta, the body’s main artery, which can detect the presence of an aneurysm. The carotid scan consists of a quick ultrasound of the carotid arteries in the neck and a blood pressure check for hypertension. This examination can detect one of the most frequent causes of stroke: significant internal carotid artery stenosis. Lastly, an Ankle Brachial Index (ABI) is a comparison of blood pressure readings from the arms and legs, which can quickly determine if there is an impairment in the circulation to the limbs due to PVD. Treatment for PAD has two major goals: (1) manage the symptoms such as leg pain, so you can resume physical activities; and (2) stop the progression of atherosclerosis throughout your body, which reduces your risk of heart attack and stroke. You may also be able to accomplish these goals with lifestyle changes. If you smoke, quitting is the single most important thing you can do to reduce risk of complications. If lifestyle changes are not enough, you need additional medical treatment. Your doctor may prescribe medicines to prevent blood clots; lower blood pressure and cholesterol; and control pain and other symptoms.

A Whirlwind Trip To The Philippines The World is My Oyster
Dr. Prospero A. Lim I spent two weeks in February in the Philippines. For the first leg of my trip, I attended the Order of Knights of Rizal’s International Assembly, which was held in the recently named Seven Wonder Cities of the World, Vigan. At the international assembly, I received the distinguished Service Cross for my long distinguished service to the organization in New York City; I’m currently the Area Commander of the Order of the Knights of Rizal USA. My colleagues Sir Dr. Emilio “Boy” Quines of Long Island Chapter received Lifetime Membership; Sir Rocky Singson, also of Long Island Chapter, received Lifetime Membership; and Sir Gaudencio Soriano of Bergenfield Chapter also received Lifetime Membership. All those who attended the assembly had a great time. Following my trip to Vigan was our fifth annual family reunion in Manila. Together with my nephews and nieces and their children, we held our family reunion at Barrio Fiesta along Marcos Highway. My good friend Rev. Fr. Mike Lagrimas celebrated Mass, after which we had a photo session per family: my sister’s, brother’s with their children and grandchildren. We all had a great time and we’ve settled to have more of this, especially helping those of us who are in need. Sir Jeremias C. Singson, KGCR hands out the Distinguished Service Cross to (Right) New York Chapter’s Sir Prospero A. Lim MD, KGOR.
Two weeks in the Philippines is such a short period of time, but I still found time to enjoy my trip. Till next time.
