Christmas Musings C
hristmas is an opportune moment to reflect on the most important people and things around us; it’s also a perfect time to dream again.
The clock is ticking: it’s almost Christmas time, and right after that, we wait for a tough 2021 to end and pray for a kinder 2022. For many, the holidays are a personal affair, especially with the rare quality time you get to spend with your family and closest friends. However, for some—including yours truly—this supposedly restful Christmastime is also spent on recollecting the highlights—as well as the blunders—in your professional life. In retrospect, I’m genuinely thankful to have kept this magazine, “Fil-Am Who’s Who,” afloat. They say credit where credit’s due, and to me, the credit rightfully belongs to my co-publishers Myrna and Rolan Gutierrez—their sheer perseverance proves to be more contagious than COVID-19! Hence, it’s my wish to churn out more issues in 2022, as success stories of our fellow kababayans in the New York Tri-State never run out. Case-in-point are the Ceribos, Drs. Jayson and Othilia Ceribo, who grace our magazine’s cover this Christmas month. The Ceribos are physical therapy practice owners in N.Y. and New Jersey. Similar to the countless immigrants to the United States from the Philippines, Jayson and Othilia were brave enough to invest their youth and budding practices in the field of physical therapy in the U.S. nearly two decades ago. Armed with prayers, guts, and a bit of luck, they’re now living their dream, together with their two lovely young boys. In our cover story, Jayson has shared his early struggles and motivations to succeed, which, for him, were all part of his personal and professional growth. He said, “One of the hardest things to do was leaving your loved ones behind, not knowing when you would see them again. Sometimes, you must sacrifice many things before you can see the fruit of your labor. “I kept telling myself over and over: for sure, it wasn’t only me who must be experiencing hardships as a new immigrant. I feel blessed God was with me all these times to guide me and give me the strength to move forward.” You may read more about the Ceribos’s inspiring story starting on page 12.
