Amazing Women & Five Facts About Life “There is no limit to what we, as women, can accomplish.” – Michelle Obama This month, we would like to introduce the 11 mothers who recently received the “Outstanding Mother – Teodora Alonzo (OMTA) Awards and three women whom we love and admire for their strength and devotion to the Filipino-American community: Olive Osias-Magpile, Atty. Elizabeth Cueva, and Dr. Jane Cases. Each woman is an outstanding achiever, also a beloved person at work and home, and in the larger community. Osias-Magpile is the former cultural officer at the Philippine Consulate General in New York. Although her assignment in the city ended just last month, we will always be grateful for all the flagship projects she spearheaded for the community. Among her projects, our favorites are The Filipino Restaurant Week, Build a Shelter Project, Distinguished Filipino Women, and the Philippine Independence Day Celebration held in Cipriani in 2016. Atty. Cueva, on the other hand, fights to uphold human rights. She works at the Division of Human Rights where she evaluates discrimination cases and acceptable resolutions; she also leads various anti-discrimination campaigns. Our cover story subject, Dr. Cases is a doctor, peer educator, and teacher; she is also a cancer warrior. Currently embarking on a journey of spiritual renewal, Dr. Cases encourages members of the community to “serve, love, and pray for one another.” She also says, “Give God all the credit for our successes and blessings in life and enjoy the goodness of the Lord,” which leads to my recollection of a post that recently went viral on social media. The post says there are “Five Facts About Life We Should Live By”: 1. Do not educate your children to be rich. Educate them to be happy – so when they grow up, they will know the value of things, not the price. 2. Eat your food as medicine, otherwise, you will need to eat your medicine as food. 3. Whoever loves you will never leave you, even If he has 100 reasons to give up. He will always find one reason to hold on. 4. There is a big difference between being human and human being. 5. Lastly, if you want to go fast – go alone! But you want to go far – go together.

Grown Strengthening up in a Philippine diplomaticCultural family Diplomacy Photo by Rolan Gutierrez arts, fashion, film, cuisine, and literature, Olive’s character and skills have indeed been in the right place at the right time. Other than the flagship projects that she was part of such as the Filipino-American General Assembly, the Filipino Restaurant Week, the Build A Shelter Project, the Distinguished Filipina Women, the Independence Day Celebration held in Cipriani in 2016, and many other cultural events, she said the most memorable achievement she will cherish is the relationship she developed with her colleagues and the larger Filipino-American community. “The ties that I will always remember and bring wherever I go are the friendships that were shaped and built throughout the past 6 years of my posting here in New York,” she says.

When it comes to her favorite aspects of her work as a cultural officer, she simply states, “It is that I can think outside of the box, go beyond my grasp, and explore changes and innovation. That my place where I am at overwhelmingly offers numerous and various choices of arts, fashion, food, films, literature, and history, and also that at the end of the day, I will still feel there are so much more things to accomplish and improve. After all, New York is considered a place for the promotion for our artists, fashion designers, film producers, book writers, creative product industries, innovators, and producers from the Philippines or New Yorkbased, among others.” “I will surely miss Fifth Avenue along with the walks to the lovely St. Patrick’s Cathedral and meetings with my favorite friends in the vicinity like Cole Ann, Zara, Uniqlo, and sometimes Tiffany,” she jokingly states. “The trees in Central Park, the arcs in Lower Manhattan, the bridges, the Hudson Riverside, the rooftop places with food, and views of the city skyline will also weigh heavily on my mind wherever in the world I will travel to, along with the four-season temperate climate of the U.S. East Coast. “I will miss most of the suburb places full of trees, parks, and lakes. New York and New Jersey, where I live, have so many serene places to sit down, relax, think, and plan,” she remarks.

E

nthusiastically promoting Philippine culture and energetically establishing a network within the Filipino-American community in her jurisdiction is exactly what Olive Osias-Magpile, a former cultural officer at the Philippine Consulate General in New York, had done throughout her assignment in the Big Apple, which began in 2013. She has completed her successful six-year diplomatic assignment in August 2019, with very productive and wonderful memories of her experiences in New York, both in and out of the office.

As the Consulate’s cultural officer, she is primarily responsible for promoting the cultural program and projects of the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs. She is a “cultural diplomat” who consistently manifests the Filipino cultural values of hospitality, politeness, resourcefulness, and creativity in all the projects aimed at strengthening relationships and fostering mutual understanding. Considering that New York is the world’s leading hub in international 10 FIL-AM WHO’S WHO s e p t e m b e r 2 0 1 9

She will soon be leaving New York with the hope that throughout her posting, she has gained the trust, confidence, and, above all, friendship and camaraderie of the New York Fil-Am community. “Their spirit of volunteerism has been the driving force for me to commit more of my time and energy and be compassionate and passionate with the promotion of cultural diplomacy and community relations.” Olive, whose father is a native of Sta. Maria, Laguna, and mother hailing from Batangas, is married with two children ages 28 and 24. She is an alumna of the Lyceum of the Philippines, Intramuros (now Lyceum of the Philippines University), where she holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Foreign Service and was a candidate for a Master’s Degree in Public Administration. Her previous assignments were at the Philippine Embassy in Jakarta, Indonesia and the Permanent Mission of the Philippines to the United Nations in New York.

M

aria Elizabeth J. Cueva, Esq., also known as “Atty. Lily” in the Filipino-American community, is a true-blue Manileña, who was born and spent much of her childhood in Manila, then moved to Quezon City during her pre-teen years. While her mother Gloria hails from Manila with Bulacan roots, her father Mariano is a Waray from Catbalogan, Samar. Elizabeth attended Nazareth School Hijas de Jesus (also called Jesuitinas) in Sampaloc, Manila from kindergarten to high school, where she was consistently at the top of her class. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Political Science at the University of the Philippines, where she graduated cum laude. While Atty. Lily’s father and grandfather are both physicians, she decided to pursue a degree in Law and graduated from the University of the Philippines College of Law in 1992. Throughout her law school years, she was a working student with her first job being with the Supreme Court of the Philippines, Office of the Chief Justice, as a Technical Assistant/Judicial Intern. She also worked as a Legal and Project Evaluation Officer at the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and practiced law in the Philippines in the areas of Corporate and Environment Laws. In 1995, Atty. Lily immigrated to the United States and resided in New York City where her grandparents have established a home in Park Slope, Brooklyn. It was then the height of the Y2K boom such that she found herself working as a paralegal in a law firm specializing in Business Immigration while studying for the New York Bar. Once again, Elizabeth found herself juggling work and school having been admitted on scholarship in the Executive Master of Science in Industrial and Labor Relations program at Baruch College, where she graduated at the top of her class with a G.P.A. of 3.854. As a lawyer in New York, Atty. Lily had worked in both the private and public sectors in the areas of Immigration, Civil Rights, Education Law, Labor Relations, Prison Litigation, Compliance, and Labor and Employment laws. She had interned at the New York State Office of the Attorney General and worked in the academia as a Compliance and Diversity Officer. She also joined the Law Office of Reuben Seguritan to be a private practitioner. After over three years in private practice, she realized that her niche would be in government service. After acing several civil service examinations and interviews, she went back to the public sector and had since worked as a senior investigator in the Department of Health, Office of Professional Medical Conduct, and the Department of Labor, Office of Labor Standards. She is currently a Human Rights Specialist at the Division of Human Rights where she handles discrimination cases, assists parties reach an acceptable resolution of their cases, conducts outreach, and carries out anti-discrimination programs.

She finds the job both rewarding yet challenging because of the sheer volume and the complexity of some of the cases. However, for Atty. Lily, public service in this field has been a privilege because she can make a direct impact and difference in promoting equal rights and access to those who are given protected status under the law. New York, after all, thrives in unity in diversity. In her private capacity, Atty, Lily involves herself with civic and community activities with her “Kababayans”. She is currently a Board Member of the Filipino American Human Services, Inc. (FAHSI) and the Public Relations Officer of the University of the Philippines Alumni Association – New Jersey Chapter. She is a member of the Ladies for Rizal, an affiliate of Knights of Rizal – New York Chapter and an Associate of JCI Queens. In 2018, Atty. Lily became the recipient of the UPAA- NJ Outstanding Alumna in Public Service and The Most Outstanding Foreign Worker from the Team United Maharlika Inc. september 2019

She had been part of the speakers’ bureau for each of those companies where she had given medical presentations and lectures in the Philippines and throughout the U.S., Southeast Asia, and Israel. She has further been teaching college students who seek positions as physician assistants at the Marietta College and served as an assistant professor at the College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Ohio University.

O

ver the past decade, former New Yorker Dr. Jane Cases has been living in Marietta, Ohio, juggling her multi-tasked roles as a dedicated doctor, peer educator, and teacher, as well as a respectable member of the Ladies for Rizal. An immense contributor of goodwill towards the Filipino-American community, she has been a practicing endocrinologist specializing in diabetes care, obesity, and thyroid disorders. Between 2005 to 2016, she had been the medical director of the Diabetes Center for the Memorial Health Systems in Marietta, Ohio, while concurrently managing her thriving solo medical and aesthetic practice, the Dr. Jane 360 Center since 2010. She has also been heavily involved in various scientific research projects with the medical firms Novo Nordisk Inc., Shire 12 FIL-AM WHO’S WHO s e p t e m b e r 2 0 1 9

Some of the products that Dr. Cases has had a huge hand in formulating have been The Healing Saint™ healing product line (www.drjane360.com), which was created out of necessity when she had sustained facial and limb injuries after an accidental fall from her road bike in 2013. This product was launched in 2015 at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards. “The Healing Saint™ product line aims to replace what has been lost due to aging or other health-related issues and replenish the scalp or skin with essential growth factors, proteins, and cytokines,” she explains, adding, “The Healing Saint™ product line contains no Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals (EDCs). Scientific studies of animals and humans support a link between EDCs and harm to human health such as infant brain development, childhood obesity, thyroid dysfunction, diabetes, some cancers, decreased fertility, and low testosterone in men, women, and children.” Her products, the Healing Saint™ Luminosity Skin Serum and the Healing Saint™ Hair Follicle Stimulant, were introduced backstage to various talents since its 2015 launch until 2018 at the Grammy Awards and were included in the “Everyone Wins” Oscar nominee gift bags. Her products have even caught the attention of Hollywood and the entertainment industry. Celebrity fans of the serum include Kelly Rutherford, Elisabeth Rohm, Greg Grunberg, Mackenzie Phillips, and Garcelle Beauvais! A native of Zamboanga City, Mindanao, she is an alumna of the Philippine Science High School in Quezon City. She pursued Physical Therapy at the University of Santo Tomas where she also earned her doctorate degree in Medicine, before taking a rotating internship at the University of the Philippines-Philippine General Hospital (UP-PGH). In 1995, she then made the big move to the U.S. to begin her residency training in medicine. Upon completion of her training and certifications in Internal Medicine, Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism, she decided to begin her medical practice at St. Luke’s Medical Center in Quezon City from late 2000 until 2004. A single parent of four children, her son is also a doctor who is currently completing his training in Urology at UP-PGH. Her eldest daughter is an architect who has completed a double master’s degree in Furniture Design in Florence, Italy, and now has a thriving practice in Cebu and Manila. Her two younger daughters are in high school in California. Dr. Cases’s New York life chapter was indeed a productive one, which has left an indelible mark not only within medical circles but throughout the Fil-Am community as well. She had completed

her residency in Internal Medicine and Fellowship in Endocrinology (1995-2000) at the Montefiore Medical Center and Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx. It was also during this time when she became active with the Long Island Chapter of the Ladies for Rizal. “I am blessed to have known Dr. Fely and Emilio Quines since my early days in medical training. They have been my guiding light and source of inspiration until today,” she says, “they treat me like one of their kids. Tita Fely, as I fondly called her, had been a mother and a true and dearest friend. We prayed, shared, and consoled each other our pains and sufferings with grace and serenity throughout our unrelenting fight against cancer. I sorely miss her. I admire her dedication to helping the less fortunate with her work for the veterans, shelters for doctors in dire need, and her benevolent assistance on education and health in NY and the Philippines through the Ladies of Rizal. Because of her exemplary work, I was inspired to join the organization two years ago. During my term as President of the Philippine Medical Association of West Virginia, we were able to provide medical mission in the Province of Isabela with the help of my classmates in Med school and benevolent friends in business and pharmaceutical companies.” Although Dr. Cases misses New York and its vibrant community, she continues to remain active as a community leader helping others in Ohio. She has been involved in various projects in Marietta, which include conducting free monthly talks at her office indoctrinating people on health and wellness, planting community gardens, and teaching cooking lessons on a plant-based diet, especially for her diabetic patients. Among her other community work involves sponsoring summer Broadway musicals by bringing in talented artists from her region in Ohio. She has also supported the Sternwheel Festival, which is the largest yearly event in Marietta as well as local sports, which her kids participate in.

led me to seek out a spiritual advisor who had led me towards the renewal of my faith and rediscovering my relationship with the Lord. And as God planned it, my spiritual counselor is connected to a convent in California where my daughters and I are moving. The future is still uncertain, but I trust that in due time the Lord will make it clear to me. All I know at this time is I intend to serve the Lord who has given me my wonderful children and family, and successful career in medicine, and very loving friends and classmates. Mother Teresa once said: ‘I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples.’ Lord, let me be a vessel to spread your word and wisdom, love, and greatness.” As for her message to the Fil-Am community in New York and Ohio, she only has to say “Serve, love, and pray for one another. Offer our day to the Lord and be grateful to Him and one another. Give Him all the credit for our successes and blessings in life (which I did not often do before--I always gave some or most of the credit to myself) and enjoy the goodness of the Lord. Be part of the bigger picture in life and make God the center of your life because life is difficult.”

“But, in many ways I consider my role as a physician in trying to keep the residents of Marietta healthy as one of my lasting contributions to Marietta residents,” she remarks, “Diabetes is among the most prevalent conditions leading to premature death and disability, so by managing the patients’ diabetes, I feel that I am contributing to the Marietta community in some meaningful way. But the best part of my practice was imparting empathy and creating a great friendship with my very loving patients. My life in New York was very hectic, which left very little time for me to reflect and accomplish personal life goals. Although I truly enjoyed what NYC can give--education, museums, arts, Broadway shows, food, friends, and retail therapy. Whereas in Marietta, life is simple and very fruitful. I spend my time at work, working with the community, with my kids, cook, do all the outdoor sports, lots of yoga time, gardening, and cleaning the house. Best of all, I get to hear mass and do all my errands in just a couple of hours in the morning. But the greatest and lasting gift that my community (my patients, friends, and healthcare providers) gave me was their love, prayers, and support.” For her immense contributions as a community leader and benefactor, she has been given the Outstanding Meritorious Service Award by the National Republican Congressional Committee for her work in 2006, as well as the Doctors of Excellence Award in 2014. Dr. Cases’s life has also had its share of challenges, which have ultimately helped give her an even clearer direction and perspective in her endeavors. “I recently decided to give up my medical practice to devote my time to serving the Lord. I was diagnosed with rectal cancer in 2018 and a few times during the treatment, I came close to dying. These moments gave me a hard pause and made me reassess my life, my values, and my perspectives. Amid the confusion, anxiety, and fear, I resolved to know my Creator better and to put my life in His hands. This
