his is the second time an issue of Fil-Am Who’s Who is released in time for a live event: the first one was during fashion choreographer-director Erno John Hormillosa’s 50th birthday celebration just two months ago; the second time is at Philippine fashion icon Renee Salud’s major fashion event, “tataksaludnyc 2015,” this month of June. In both occasions, the publishers and editorial staff behind this magazine are extra grateful for choosing Fil-Am Who’s Who as a companion publication to these high-profile events. We’re honored to have been part of these momentous gatherings of FilipinoAmerican movers and shakers, culturati, friends, and supporters. Thank you very much. In Fil-Am Who’s Who, we’re always on the search for Filipino success stories, which in turn, inspire others to always give their best. Our newfound inspiration is Dr. Mary Jane “MJ” Torres, the owner of medical spa The Zen Institute, which had its roots in Manila, Philippines and recently expanded to Bali, Indonesia. Dr. Torres, an alumna of University of Santo Tomas Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, successfully walks the talk: beauty, brains, and a friend. Consulting with Dr. Torres is like talking with a longtime friend who will make quality time to listen and understand the patient’s personal issues. She believes that “beauty comes from within.” Before working on the skin or body, Dr. Torres first determines the factors that are stopping the patient from feeling good about himself or herself. The Zen Institute’s wellness programs, which mostly involve non-invasive procedures, are based on those reassuring principles. While working on this issue, I found out one of my good friends in Philippine show biz, actor-singer Franco Laurel, is one of the happy clients at The Zen Institute. He says, “At the Zen Institute, they treat your face and body as a work of art, their masterpiece. “I’m in my 40’s and as we get older, there are things we cannot avoid like hair loss, a bit of weight gain, especially in the waist area and a little sinking and sagging in the face with the occasional wrinkles. The treatments that Doc MJ tailor made for me helped me in so many ways deal with the problems that I had and the results are outstanding.” I recently bumped into Franco in Makati City, Philippines; his baby face didn’t age even a bit! Let the Good Times Roll Hello Sunshine! Summer days are here! It is time to free those toes; slide into some sandals; and head for the beach. When we get closer to the hottest months of the year, we tend to pay our attention to weight loss and a more active lifestyle. It may or may not be about having a bikini body, but the truth is health matters;
your overall health affects your longevity, independence, and sense of satisfaction. If you have been putting off taking that next step toward getting more active, let me encourage you to make no excuses and “just do it.”
10 Sneaky Ways to Burn 75 Calories (Without Even Knowing It) We found ways to shed at least 75 calories per day by simply doing everyday activities. It may sound like a lot but it adds up. Do four of these activities per day and you will burn 300 calories—without even knowing it. 1. Walk the dog: Take your dog around the block for 20 minutes to shed 75 calories. If you and your dog are up for a trot, shorten the time to 15 minutes. If your dog sees a squirrel, embrace the chase. 2. Go shopping: Less than half an hour of leisurely shopping and pushing a grocery cart will use up to 75 calories; pick up the pace and you’ll burn more! 3. Skip the elevator: Only seven minutes of climbing stairs will use up to 75 calories—so skip the lift. If you are carrying a backpack, boxes, or bags of groceries, you will burn even more. 4. Wash the car: In less than 20 minutes, you will use up to 75 calories. Once your car is sparkling clean, unclog the gutters for 15 minutes, which sheds another 75 calories. 5. Jump rope. Only 10 minutes of slow rope skipping will burn off more than 75 calories. Step up your pace and you’ll burn 100 calories in 10 minutes. 6. Play hopscotch: Burn 75 calories in a 15-minute game and bond with your kids at the same time. Or get vigorous—wrestling, tickling, and tug use 75 calories in 10 minutes. 7. Be a caddy: If you are a golfer, walking and carrying your own clubs can use up to 75 calories in 15 minutes—so playing 18 holes can burn as much as 1,000 calories. 8. Mow the lawn: You will free up to more than 75 calories in less than 20 minutes with a power mower or 110 calories with a hand mower. Raking fall leaves, shoveling snow, and gardening have similar burning potential. 9. Dance up a storm: Shake your booty to rock of disco for 12 minutes and you will lose up to 75 calories. If you are a slow dancer, dance waltz or foxtrot for 25 minutes for the same result. 10. Lastly, have sex. A 15-minute romp in the hay can use up to 75 calories. JUNE 2015

Dr. Mary Jane“M J”Torres The Zen Institute: Philippines’ Icon of a Medical Spa Z
en Institute, at the helm of medical tourism in the country, is the very first medical spa in the Philippines, and the only one existing and operating in the country. A medical spa must uphold and blend the four elements: Aesthetic, Integrative, Lifestyle, and Pampering. All these are present at the Zen Institute, explains owner and head doctor, Dr. Mary Jane “MJ” Torres. A graduate from the University of Santo Tomas Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, Dr. MJ had her postgraduate internship at St. Luke’s Hospital and followed by various trainings with leading dermatologists and surgeons. She finished her Botox training in Istanbul, Turkey and lipotherapy in Athens, Greece. She is a member of the International Society of Mesotherapy, the French Society of Mesotherapy, and the Italian Society of Aesthetic Medicine and Surgery, and also part of the Thailand-based teaching group that gives workshops and trainings on aesthetic medicine to Asian doctors. She is famous for pioneering Resonax in the Philippines, the latest technology in Body Sculpting and specializes in Lipotherapy, Non-Surgical Facial Contouring, and Body Sculpting. She is also well-loved for advocating non-surgical treatments. And while beauty is an advantage, at Zen Institute, beauty is achieved through non-invasive means. Dr. MJ is friendly and always eager to explain the advantage of procedures to her clients, while answering all their queries since clients have endless questions about their services. Unlike other physicians, consulting with Dr. MJ is like talking to a trusted friend, who understands your personal issues. “Beauty comes from within. Before we work on the skin or the body, we must know what is stopping them from feeling good about themselves. We base their program from there. We do not want them to just look good on the outside, it must come from within.” Dr. MJ promotes a lifestyle of wellness as embodied in Zen Institute’s philosophy. “We believe beauty can be achieved even without going under the knife. Zen has made an evolution in the field of beauty and aesthetics. Our clinic has the calming effects of a spa, it is very relaxing and medical procedures 8 FIL-AM WHO’S WHO J U N E 2 0 1 5
are done by licensed doctors and wellness consultants. Treatments are mostly non-surgical and non-invasive, which how Zen is known for in the industry and the market”, she said. One of their popular programs is the PCL or Power Cell Lifting. According to Dr. MJ, the program is new and injects multiple threads for strong lifting effect and for enhancing cell engraftment to the treatment areas. It is safe and effective since multiple threads are used for better effect. Dr. MJ said, “Surprisingly, there is no pain and the procedure is classified as only minimally invasive; there is no fear of surgery here, and even the needle that we use is so tiny. We’re lucky this is now in the Philippines, and we can claim that we can do the procedure competently and safely,” she added. The other services of Zen include Facial Contouring, Body Sculpting, Facial Contouring, and Skin Rejuvenation. It also has an exclusive program for men called The Art of Image-Building which include hair restoration, hydrating treatments for face and body, and many more. All treatments are protocolbased because beauty is progressive and it’s a process. Several sessions are needed so the effect is permanent, and beauty has a lasting effect. Part of the progressive approach is looking into the client’s lifestyle and making significant changes. “If after treatment you resume your unhealthy lifestyle, then we go back to where we started. If you come in for weight management, we do not sell you a product that will make you drop all that pounds. We will analyze your eating habits, teach proper diet and recommend treatments to help you achieve your desired weight. But this will only succeed if you do it religiously. And because it is progressive, it has a lasting effect,” she said. At Zen Institute, the road to beauty is a journey. One needs to go through several phases in order to achieve the goal. With a guiding philosophy that combines medical science, creativity, and aesthetics, beauty is achieved inside and out.

target is less than 130/80 mm Hg. Medication to control blood sugar: If you also have diabetes, it becomes even more important to control your blood sugar (glucose) levels. Talk with your doctor about what your blood sugar goals are and what steps you need to take to achieve these goals.
Peripheral Vascular Disease (PVD) Part Two By Michael L. Avaricio, MD
Medications Cholesterol-lowering medication: You may take a cholesterol-lowering drug called statin to reduce risk of heart attack and stroke. The goal for people who have peripheral artery disease is to reduce low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, the “bad” cholesterol, to less than 100 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL), or 2.6 millimoles per liter (mmol/L). High blood pressure medication: If you also have high blood pressure, your doctor may prescribe medications to lower it. The goal is to reduce your systolic blood pressure (the top number of the two numbers) to 140 millimeters of mercury (mm Hg) or lower and your diastolic blood pressure (the bottom number) to 90 mm Hg or lower. If you have diabetes, your blood pressure
Medication to prevent blood clots: Because peripheral artery disease is related to reduced blood flow to your limbs, it’s important to reduce risk of blood clots. A blood clot can completely block an already narrowed blood vessel and cause tissue death. Your doctor may prescribe daily aspirin therapy or another medication that helps prevent blood clots such as clopidogrel (Plavix). Symptom-relief medication: The drug cilostazol (Pletal) increases blood flow to the limbs by preventing blood clots and widening the blood vessels. It specifically helps treat symptoms of claudication, such as leg pain, for people who have peripheral artery disease. Common side effects of this medication include headache and diarrhea. An alternative to cilostazol is pentoxifylline (Trental); however, it’s generally less effective— side effects are rare with this medication.
Angioplasty and Surgery In some cases, angioplasty or surgery may be necessary to treat peripheral
artery disease that’s causing intermittent claudication. Angioplasty: In this procedure, a small hollow tube (catheter) is threaded through a blood vessel to the affected artery. A small balloon on the tip of the catheter is inflated to reopen the artery and flatten the blockage into the artery wall while at the same time stretching the artery open to increase blood flow. Your doctor may also insert a mesh framework called a stent in the artery to help keep it open. This is the same procedure doctors use to open heart arteries. Bypass surgery: Your doctor may create a graft bypass using a vessel from another part of your body or a blood vessel made of synthetic fabric. This technique allows blood to flow around— or bypass—the blocked or narrowed artery. Thrombolytic therapy: If you have a blood clot blocking an artery, your doctor may inject a clot-dissolving drug into your artery at the point of the clot to break it up.
Supervised Exercise Program In addition to medications or surgery, your doctor may prescribe a supervised exercise training program to increase the distance you can walk pain-free. Regular exercise improves symptoms of Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) by a number of methods including helping your body use oxygen more efficiently.

NJ Express Ria Serrano Community Event Roundup In celebration of Women’s History Month last March, I emceed a gala event that Pan American Concerned Citizens Action League (PACCAL) spearheaded at Ramada Plaza Hotel in Newark. The gathering recognized influential women achievers in the Filipino-American community. Among its many highlights, it was philanthropist Loida Nicolas Lewis’s speech that struck me the most; in her speech, she recalled her challenges as a woman who was once building her business from the ground up. PACCAL’s Honorary Ball Chair Dr. Elma de Villa Castillo recognized 10 women for displaying excellence in their chosen fields of endeavor: Marietta Geraldino (Teaching), Rose Concepcion (Business Entrepreneurship), Laura Garcia (Nursing), May Maddatu, MD (Medicine), Vivian Cruz (Community Service), Chin Gomez (Entertainment), Joji Rafael (Quality
Management), Cristine Godinez, Esq. (Legal), Grace Wong (Mother of the Year), and Demetria Cornelio (Senior Citizen of the Year). PACCAL also named Fe Sales, Marie Duffy, Senen Cabalfin, and Nilda Jaynal as its Most Influential Women. Having a mother who worked as a teacher for more than 25 years, I was honored to have been requested to co-emcee UNIFFIED’s Recognition Day for Teachers for the second year last April. Held at NYU Palladium Residence Hall, the event awarded more than 170 teachers in the presence of UNIFFIED President Lumen Castaneda and Consul General Mario De Leon. Jenjen Furer, Cristina Pastor, and Rachelle Ocampo of Makilala TV helped me out with the hosting chore (my special thanks go to these incredible ladies). Lastly, I also had the opportunity to emcee, together with Ed Toloza, Philippine American Friendship Commitee’s (PAFCOM) 2015 Friendship Night and Coronation Ball at Hilton Double Tree Hotel in Newark last month. Crowned during that special event were seven-year-old Trinity Mayo-Policarpio (Litte Miss PAFCOM), Julia Lagmay (Miss Teen PAFCOM), Chantal Chaneco (Miss Liberty PAFCOM), Nessiemay de Chavez (Mutya ng Silangan), Nicole Stimer (Binibining Pilipinas), Elaine Ficarra (Miss PAFCOM), and Joycelyn Aligarbes (Mrs. PAFCOM). PAFCOM’s event was filled with dancing and performances by Anne Garana, Miss PAFCOM Elaine Ficarra, and popular local performer Maureen Javier. Photo by: Ness Bantog
