Clinical Student Coach Program Development of a five week studentship course between junior nursing students in an accelerated BSN program and staff RNs. Each BSN student was paired with one RN who was titled a “Clinical Student Coach”. The “Coach” had to take a preceptor course, fill out an interest form, and be endorsed by their manager. After advertising the program the interest to “Coach” far exceeded our expectations and we had many more coaches then we did students available to pair them with. Program included focusing on the benefits of coaching a student, development of a resource toolkit, and ongoing support and interaction with the coaches and students along with partnering with our local College. Participation included 37 BSN Students and 37 coaches over the 2018 Summer months. 12

Escape the Room The Sepsis Escape Room was a popular education strategy deployed during the National Sepsis Campaign, an initiative supported throughout the health system. All hospital staff were encouraged to attend sessions held periodically throughout the day to use “Escape Room Mentality” to solve a puzzle as a group. The gamification of the highly relevant topic of sepsis, was an innovative strategy to engage staff of all backgrounds in critical sepsis education. The sessions were developed collaboratively by a clinical nurse from PPMC ACE Unit, Unit Educators, Clinical Nurse Specialists, and Nursing Education, and drew inspiration from an “escape room” previously developed by the nurse from the ACE unit.
“ SO fun! Great way to learn more about sepsis”

Nursing Orientation Testimonials
Although I am a seasoned nurse, it was refreshing to see and hear new concepts that I can incorporate in my practice. Excellent orientation. The passion for nursing professionalism and excellent patient care is made very apparent during the week. I have never been a part of such a comprehensive and inspiring orientation. All of the instructors were great, personable and brought enthusiasm to the sessions. I thoroughly enjoyed this experience. This orientation helped me realize once again why I went into this profession. The speakers and the topics brought up during this orientation made me feel proud of what I do and why I do it. Thank you Penn Medicine. I am extremely proud and excited to be part of such a great health system.

The Domains of Practice represent evidence-based nursing and characterize essential aspects of nursing practice. Each of the 8 domains define the Knowledge, Skills, and Attitudes (KSAs) nurses must demonstrate to enhance autonomy and accountability, elevate nursing practice and cultivate career development.* Penn Medicine Nursing Professional Development played a key role in the development, integration, education, and evaluation of the new domains, and have leveraged their expertise as internal and external consultants. Revised Gateway to Critical Care Course (GWCC) The Critical Care Course is one part of the GWCC orientation process for nurses. It includes 6 didactic days with skills and 2 all-skills days (new for FY19). In FY19, based on a learning needs assessment, GWCC revised to include all nurses new to critical care, not just nurse residents. This allowed the merger of the 6 didactic/skills days (for all new to critical care) with the 2 all-skills days (previously for residents only) for one 8-day course. This merged program was renamed Gateway to Critical Care Program. Progressive/Intermediate units continue to only attend the 6 didactic days.

Overall it was an excellent learning experience (in class and clinical) and I would definitely recommend it to any nurses looking into critical care. The sepsis escape room was a lot of fun! The skills/interactive portions really helped reinforce my knowledge.
Modules added: moral distress, oncological emergencies, sepsis escape room, communication with non-verbal patients, geriatric critical care, Penn Elert, and updated evidence-based skills sessions.

S.T.A.B.L.E Instructor Course S.T.A.B.L.E is the most widely distributed and implemented neonatal education program to focus exclusively on the post-resuscitation/pretransport stabilization care of sick infants. Based on a mnemonic to optimize learning, retention and recall of information, S.T.A.B.L.E stands for the six assessment and care modules in the program: Sugar, Temperature, Airway, Blood Pressure, Lab Work, and Emotional Support. A seventh module, Quality Improvement stresses the professional responsibility of improving and evaluating care provided to sick infants.

Instructor was extremely knowledgeable of subject matter and used information in relatable scenarios when appropriate to assist in learning and retaining information. Great class! Al Rundio has an engaging teaching style that is supported by his many, many years of experience. The stories he infuses with the concepts taught are relevant and the stories were seamlessly added to the content so that the ideas were easy to grasp.

Evidence-Based Practice at Penn Medicine Standard Nine of the nursing professional development practice model states that the NPD practitioner “acts as a champion of scientific inquiry, generating new knowledge and integrating best available evidence into practice” (Harper & Maloney, 2016, p. 45). In this role the NPD practitioner disseminates research, evidence-based practice, and quality improvement findings through activities such as presentations, publications, and consultation. The NPD Practitioners and clinical nurse educators at Penn Medicine have played key roles in research, quality improvement initiatives and the dissemination of over 60 evidence-based best practices. In addition, Penn Medicine NPD practitioners have received numerous awards and recognitions for their work.
Below is a selected list of their accomplishments this year. Congratulations to all!
