Issue 1 A Kiwi is not a Fruit; Tales of New Zealand

Welcome to Collective Bull, an illustrated newspaper made by the incredibly good-looking people at The Collective Dairy. As you’ll soon find out, the newspaper is quite simply a load of nonsense. Full of utterly absurd facts, stories and even a riddle or two; your challenge is to decide whether they’re true or false. Are they Bull or No Bull? As the fellas at The Collective came all the way from New Zealand, it’s only fair we start the story there. Watch out for the following issues of Collective Bull as we follow their journey from New Zealand to the motherland, the UK. Now, it’s time to dust off your thinking cap and put your game face on. #BullorNoBull

Riddle Me Good, The Hobbit This thing all things devours: Birds, beasts, trees, flowers; Gnaws iron, bites steel; Grinds hard stones to meal; Slays king, ruins town, And beats high mountain down.

Alive without breath, As cold as death; Never thirsty, ever drinking, All in mail never clinking.

Voiceless it cries, Wingless flutters, Toothless bites, Mouthless mutters.

It cannot be seen, cannot be felt, Cannot be heard, cannot be smelt. It lies behind stars and under hills, And empty holes it fills. It comes first and follows after, Ends life, kills laughter.

Until the mid-19th century, the practice of eating one’s enemy was an accepted and honoured tradition in New Zealand. The last known act of cannibalism occurred in 1867 when Thomas Baker, a missionary, attempted to civilize the natives and convert them to Christianity. The initial interactions between Baker and the natives were positive but then, in an attempt to retrieve a comb, Baker touched the head of the village chief.

12

To the villagers, this was a forbidden act and a gesture that was tantamount to declaring war.

They cannibalized Baker (and his fellow missionaries) leaving behind a single shoe, which can be found on display at the Auckland Museum.
