“I wish for your help to create a strong, sustainable movement to educate every child about food, inspire families to cook again and empower people everywhere to fight obesity.”
“COOKING IS, WITHOUT A DOUBT, ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT SKILLS A PERSON CAN EVER LEARN. ONCE SOMEONE HAS THAT KNOWLEDGE, THAT’S IT - THEY’RE SET FOR LIFE”

JAMIE OLIVER has been drawn to the kitchen since he was a child working in his father's pubrestaurant. He showed not only a precocious culinary talent but also a passion for creating (and talking about) fresh, honest, delicious food. In the past decade, the shaggy-haired "Naked Chef" of late-'90s BBC2 has built a worldwide media conglomerate of TV shows, books, cookware
and magazines, all based on a formula of simple, unpretentious food that invites everyone to get busy in the kitchen. And as much as his cooking is generous, so is his business model — his Fifteen Foundation, for instance, trains young chefs from challenged backgrounds to run four of his restaurants. Now, Oliver is using his fame and charm to bring attention to the changes that Brits
and Americans need to make in their lifestyles and diet. Campaigns such as Jamie's School Dinner, Ministry of Food and Food Revolution USA combine Oliver’s culinary tools, cookbooks and television, with serious activism and community organizing -- to create change on both the individual and governmental level.
“My aim is to create sustainable change, not just a cute little makeover.”

...while reports show that today’s teens, categorized as the unhealthiest in history, are likely to die of heart disease younger than people in previous generations. IT HAS BEEN PREDICTED THAT 23% OF TEENS IN THE US ARE PRE-DIABETIC OR HAVE TYPE-2 DIABETES – A DISEASE UNHEARD OF IN CHILDREN JUST A FEW DECADES AGO.

The Jamie Oliver Food Foundation (USA) works with kids, communities, businesses and policy partners to make food education a priority. Through their Learn Your Fruits and Vegetables program, in partnership with Whole Foods Northern California, they teach kids in after-school clubs their first step in food education through fun classes about different fruits and vegetables and cooking simple and tasty recipes. Through the Big Rig mobile teaching kitchen, in partnership with The California Endowment, they reach the most in-need Californian communities, teaching cooking classes on board the truck and training up
local Food Champions who can continue teaching classes once the truck moves on. Through their Global Ambassador Program they have a network of volunteers working locally for the global cause to bring the Food Revolution to life, galvanizing energies to kick-start foodie initiatives and supporting Food Revolution Day in May each year. JOFF’s partnerships have allowed them to grow and scale nationally, their latest campaign Get Food Education in Every School, in partnership with Food Day, has given over 80 organizations a platform to come together and raise awareness around the importance of getting food education on to the curriculum and into a school's everyday culture. THE AWARD
We award TED Prize winners $1 million to inspire dreamers to think bigger about what’s possible. The award offers support to build a project’s core infrastructure quickly--so that others can add their own collaborative action.
THE WISH
Imagine an inspiring, high impact idea or dream that needs the support of a global community to become real. Our winner will have an ambitious wish -- and the vision, pragmatism and leadership to make it a reality.
THE PROCESS
Nomination happens two ways: Nominate yourself and make your wish. Or nominate someone else, and we’ll ask them for their wish. The TED Prize committee will review all nominations and select the winner.
TED is a nonprofit devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. It started out in 1984 as a conference bringing together people from three worlds: Technology, Entertainment, Design. Since then its scope has become ever broader. Along with two annual conferences -- the TED Conference and TEDGlobal -- TED includes the award-winning TED Talks video site, the Open Translation Project and TED Conversations, the inspiring TED Fellows and TEDx programs, and the annual TED Prize. The TED Prize is awarded annually to an exceptional individual who receives $1,000,000 and the TED community’s resources and expertise to spark global change. The Prize begins with a big wish — a wish to inspire ANNUAL thinkers and doers across the globe. From Bono’s the ONE Campaign (’05 recipient) to Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution (’10 recipient) and JR’s Inside Out Project (’11 recipient), the TED Prize has helped to combat poverty, take on religious intolerance, improve global health, tackle child obesity, advance education, and inspire art around the world.
