QUESTION 3

WHAT KIND OF MEDIA INSITUTION MIGHT DISTRIBUTE YOUR MEDIA PRODUCTS AND WHY?

DISTRIBUTION If my opening was made into a full length film, it would be a mainstream horror as it fits in with many if the horror codes and conventions (question 1). This means that when released, my film will be easy accessible for audiences. My film would firstly been released into cinema’s, then after three months released onto DVD. My film may not be released into nation wide cinema’s as, similar to many horrors, it would have a small to moderate budget. The DVD would be sold in many British entertainment retailers, e.g. HMV and supermarkets, such as Tesco and Sainsbury's. After my film had been released onto DVD for four months, it would be premiered on channel 4 as channel 4/film 4 has a reputation for debuting horror films. Films such as In Fear and Silent House were shown on either/both of these channels. Many horror films are featured on the Film4oD website. The website offers the audience information about the film, a chance to view the film trailer and even to rent the film for a sum of between £3-£5.

Here are the genre categories from the film section on the Tesco website. If released, my film would be found in the horror section.

WHY WOULD IT BE DISTRIBUTED THIS WAY? My film would be distributed as the way stated on opposite page due to it being similar to other horror films in past and present circulation. The location and small budget is similar to Paranormal Activity (2007). Paranormal Activity had a estimated budget of $15,000 and lacked a A-list cast. My film would be predominately released in the UK and if successful, then released in USA. I have decided on this approach after research the grossing success of Paranormal Activity. In the Opening Weekend in the UK, 29 November 2009, the film grossed ÂŁ3,593,762 and was released on 394 screens. In contrast to this, in the opening weekend in USA, 27 September 2009, the film grossed $77,873 and was released on only 12 screens. However, due to the success of the film through social media and the success in the UK, the film was re-released in the USA, 16 October 2009, on 760 screens and grossed $19,617,650. Due to my film having similar elements to Paranormal Activity, I believe that if released, my film would follow a similar pattern. However, my film is slightly more complex in plot and also has thriller elements which Paranormal Activity does not and this may equal to my film not following the same success pattern.

The stalker/thriller element within my film is similar to the pattern seen in Gone (2012). Gone in a widely successful thriller which follows the story of a young female who is stalked and terrorised by a man who previously tried to kill her. Although Gone was only released in the USA, 26 February 2012, on 2,186 screens it still grossed $4,770,360. Due to the thriller genre being world wide recognisable and successful, I decided to substitute some of the horror codes and conventions with thriller codes. In doing this, it secures a mainstream release due to the success of thrillers.
