d u v e t d i s t i n c t Duvet Distinct challenges convention in the sense that it fuses practicality with aesthetic fashion. This trend adapts the original technique by reducing the width between the seams on the jacket to subsequently compress the layers to produce a lightweight, versatile jacket that can be worn in multiple environments and activities.

Not only did the rise in athleisure wear contribute to the popularisation of the quilting technique, but it also was brought more attention when singer Drake was featured wearing a Moncler jacket in his ‘Hotline Bling’ music video. Alongside Drake other celebrities have been seen in a similar style at the Sun Dance Film Festival in Utah.

r e s t & r e c o v e r y Rest and Recovery is a sportswear trend inspired by nature. In comparison to most, this trend focuses on the aftermath of exercise rather than throughout. Cocoon shells formed by caterpillars influenced the high neck lines and lowered hem lines for this trend. This reflects the process of recovery and protection for your body after exercise.

Considering the nature influence of this trend dark and natural colours are prominent. Alongside this the fabrics are soft and comfortable to ensure the environment is ideal for resting.

t r a n s i t io n a l s i l h o u e t t e s Transitional Silhouettes allows active females to easily switch between activities throughout their daily routine. Since the rise in healthy lifestyles, brands have been keen to get a place within this sector of fashion. Brands such as Alexander Wang have formed collections which cross into the sportswear category but also new brands have been purposely created such as Ivy Park by Beyonce. All have stuck to a muted colour palette to allow the attention to be on the product itself. The boundaries that separated sportswear from everyday fashion have been reduced by merging fashionable aspects onto original sportswear silhouettes and fabrics making it practical to partake in sport and exercise but also acceptable to lunch or work in.

e x p r e s s y o u r t y p e Express Your Type is a typography based trend that focuses on the surroundings rather than the type itself. The use of a bounding box and a contrast in colours contributes towards highlighting the text. This technique translate for both menswear and womenswear by using appropriate methods.

Brands have been noticed to use these graphics to heighten the brand name or sometimes bold statements. They are imprinted onto a range of fabric but most often a soft jersey material which is employed by a lot of urban, streetwear brands. Alexander Wang uses a bold statement against a delicate fabric to created a juxtaposition, this is another form of a visual contrast within the trend that is used to emphasise the text.

a r t i s t i c e x p r e s s i o n Artistic Expression has similar traits to the camouflage print. The scattered paint strokes that are used to disguise soldiers in a natural environment, however this trend uses a similar technique to remind consumers of the traditional, non commercial design methods. Young designers have been noticed to adopt this method in order to express their ability in different mediums to the industry.

The predominantly monochrome colour palette creates a visual contrast between the print and the background, this is not only visually pleasing but also draws attention to the print. This is where it differentiates from the camouflage print as a variety of tones of the same colour are used to almost merge together and form a disguising method. Edda Gimnes is a young British designer who has accidentally created this pattern by using her left hand to draw and experiment with.

b r u t a l f e m i n i s t This trend explores the contradicting elements of femininity and the use of harsh materials. Although brutal, the materials also display a smooth surface which contributes to the atmosphere of the trend. Brutal Feminist is an expansion on the constant industrial movement we see, but also reflects the change in economy over the years by using more expensive materials like concrete or slate.

Since creatives with an eye for design discovered the beauty within raw architecture, the movement has expanded rapidly but often reflects the state of the economy. Materials such as wood and metal have been pushed aside as high priced materials emerge. Concrete portrays the on going 90’s trend of minimalism in a sense that furniture and features can only be built in a simple structures. Brutal Feminist introduces a new twist to this trend by incorporating feminine associated colours like orange and pink tones. These colours are portrayed in a feminine way like Studio TooGood shows by draping these colours from high line curtains in the Mahani concept store in Dubai.

e c o m a n i a Eco Mania aims to reduce the boundaries between the inside and outside world. The natural materials are crafted into aesthetic displays that create the calming and reassuring environment that is associated with nature. This environment enables the consumers to escape from the technological saturated world and indulge in the retail experience.

This trend brings two opposite worlds together by intergrating natural materials found outside into interiors. Burford Garden Centre in the Cotswolds uses wasted cocoon shells to create hanging plants while the Ideal Home Show features woodland characteristics in their ‘traditionally british home.’

This retail environment follows the macro trend of technology which is favoured the demographic groups: the millennials and Generation Z. These groups are known as being comfortable with technology and spend a significant amount of their time interacting with technology, therefore it is strategic to incorporate technology into shopping. This year we expect to see creations such as virtual reality shopping.
