Tom Joy. “Diverse is what i’d say about leeds”

Tom Joy is a freelance photographer, he moved from Aberdeen to Leeds in 2013. Toms work thrives on Leeds’ exciting, dynamic and developing culture. Developing his own style in nightlife photography, fashion shoots and location shots. Leeds culture and environment inspired him to capture his favourite venues in Leeds. The State of the Arts hosted an exhibition for Tom to display his self-directed project ‘Places and spaces’ which is a series of Toms favourite places in Leeds. He printed a series of postcards of 12 selected shots and captured the most distinctive, atmospheric and much loved venues in leeds. Asking Tom about his freelance career:

What’s the best thing about being your own boss? And the worst?

The best is that I can do what I want when I want. What could be better than that? I need to work and earn money and be responsible, sure but generally I can do whatever. The worst part? I’m addicted. My career is a paid hobby so how do I take a step back from that? How do I take a day off? How do I switch off? Basically, I don’t. and that’s to ugh sometimes. I’m seriously passionate about what I do and obsessed with documenting everything around me. I’ve recently decided I’m going to try and take 1 full day off a week. No laptop. No emails. No messages. Nothing. Just go out and do something where I can relax otherwise I’m generally fearful of the consequences further down the line of my life. That’s a tough thing to accept because I’m saying, “okay today I’m not going to capture what I see. And I’m not going to earn anything today.” And as a freelancer that’s basically a fear.

Are you where you dreamed you’d be when you started out all those years ago? Big question- I think I’m beyond it? When I started taking photography seriously I was only half way into my first year of Graphic Design at University back home in Aberdeen. My basic plan was to nail the coursework and build a portfolio in photography over the next four years to present multiple skills and hopefully make myself become more employable. By around halfway into my second year the snowball effect had well and truly begun and over the course of my degree I struggled to balance freelance photography and studying/designing. My goals have always been changing through but I guess I really mean ‘progressing’. I’m never happy with what I have and my ambition and competitive nature makes me continuously strive to the next big thing so it’s often hard to even position myself with one direct path because the routes change and wrap so often. I am definitely beyond where I hoped I would be 5 years ago though. I never imagined back then that I would be a full time photographer in Leeds of all places (S/O to Leeds) I’ve just left London for the day and I’m back down tomorrow for four days with shoots planned. Today I met an artist I’ve admired for years at a massive sneaker convention. All of this to create content for blog posts featured on ‘The Hundreds’ website. If you had told me five years ago that I would be doing this I wouldn’t believe you.
