Thank you for joining us to celebrate our 45th anniversary of lifelong learning. On behalf of Dr. Yakut Gazi, Vice Provost for Duke Learning Innovation and Digital Education, the OLLI Board of Advisors, and OLLI staff, we welcome you.

What began in 1977 as the Duke Institute for Learning in Retirement with just 42 members is now the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Duke University (OLLI at Duke), with nearly 1600 members. Today, we are recognized nationally for our outstanding instructors, and our diversity, equity and inclusion work.

OLLI grew and evolved over the years thanks to the tremendous dedication and creativity of thousands of OLLI volunteers. Recruiting instructors, curating our course offerings, providing tech training for our instructors, moderating classes and building course websites are some of the many ways our volunteers contributed to the growth and national reputation of OLLI today.

COVID was a catalyst for creativity and innovation at OLLI, and its impact is still being felt today.

OLLI at Duke is more geographically diverse than ever before and nearly 50% of our members have some affiliation with Duke, thanks to our partnership with Duke’s Office of Alumni Engagement and Development.

Online courses allow us to serve a broader market of adults - those who are unable to drive and those with caregiving responsibilities. The accessibility of Zoom also makes it easier for our members with hearing, vision and mobility challenges to participate. In order to support our expanded reach, OLLI’s full time and part time staff has grown in the last four years.

North Carolina’s population of older adults is projected to grow substantially over the next two decades which presents an opportunity for OLLI at Duke to engage newcomers and increase our membership. We look forward to expanding our programming as we welcome many new residents into our OLLI learning community.

North Carolina ranks 9th nationally in total population and 8th in the number of people 65 and older.

In 2020 alone, an estimated 44,660 people 60 and older migrated from other states and abroad to North Carolina.

As we look to our 50th anniversary in 2027, we are excited about the future and the opportunities to reimagine how OLLI can make a difference.

With deep gratitude,
