Eliza Gosse presents her second exhibition with OLSEN Gallery, Entertainer’s Delight with Ocean Views. The solo presentation of new paintings on canvas and paper will be installed against trompe l’oeil wall stickers of the artist’s own design. Entertainer’s Delight with Ocean Views borrows from the glossy pages of Architectural Digest, a famed American home interiors and landscaping magazine founded in the 1920s. From her preferred vintage issues, Gosse has borrowed retro imagery and over-blown textual excerpts to inspire each new composition. Playfully inhabiting the voice of AD, the artist has crafted her own captions to accompany the featured paintings – “colours of sky blue and warm red upholstery were selected to accent the mood” reads one, “ocean views can be glimpsed beyond,” claims another.
Entertainer’s Delight with Ocean Views will be current at OLSEN Annexe September 6–16.
A popular family area is the two-story breakfast room, located in the centre of the house, it opens at each end to garden and patio areas. Warm accents are provided from open shelving displaying a range of jars preserving brightly coloured fruits.
The ruddy warmth of stained red cedar, yellow brick and tile affords a pleasing contrast to the courtyards azure swimming pool. A spill over edge adds the visual sparkle of falling waters, accompanied by a gentle splashing sound. Ocean views can be glimpsed beyond.
The smaller study area was created to have a more traditional feeling with curved back sofa from Chambers & Sons. To give a bright atmosphere the rooms walls are covered with a warm yellow hue, with green and white used as accented colours. A dark teakwood desk and large bookshelf filled with accessories lends a warm and inviting mood to the room. The eye stopping conversation piece is an antique watercolour of a monkey.
The living room was planned with comfortable upholstered furniture to provide an inviting area for entertaining. A red backless sofa separates the sitting area from an adjoining bar area and allows guests to face in either direction. The large rug by Edward Fields is used to delineate the major seating area. The only wall decoration is a painted screen print of Australian flora. Colours of sky blue and warm red upholstery were selected to accent the mood.
