Yaritji Young Tjala Tjukurpa (Honey Ant Story) 2018 acrylic on linen 198 x 152.5 cm SOLD
Yaritji Young is a traditional owner for tjala tjukurpa, near the Amata community in South Australia. She paints the rock holes and landmarks of her country, entwined with icons and traditional marks that relate to inma (dance) and tjukurpa (dreaming). The twisted lines and shapes mimic tunnels and formations made by the tjala honey ant. ‘My paintings are of my country: my father’s country, my grandmother’s country, the tjala country. Everything that my grandmother taught me, I’m teaching to my grandchildren now. They dance because I have shared what I got from my grandmother with my granddaughters, so they can know their culture.’ Yaritji Young, 2017

Together these three women depict grand creation stories that have been passed down through countless generations. Their paintings show a particular sensitivity to the way these creation myths interact with and shape their beloved homeland, Watarru, and its many unique land formations. The Watarru Collaborative brings together distinct mark-making styles to create cohesive and dynamic artworks, filled with deep cultural integrity and a love and knowledge of country. Wawiriya Burton is a senior woman from the Amata community. In this painting, she tells the story of her father’s country near Pipalyatjara, west of Amata in South Australia. It depicts minyma mingkiri tjuta (small female desert mice). The mingkiri are pregnant and give birth to many babies. They then journey to the surrounding rock holes in search of food and water for their young. The dotted lines are mingkiri tracks. ‘A long time ago, when we were little children, we ran around Puta Puta and Ilitjata, our grandfather’s and father’s ground, and because of this we grew up strong. Why? Because it’s Anangu country – Aboriginal people’s country – of their spirit.’ Wawiriya Burton, 2017
Maringka Baker Minyma Kutjara 2017 Synthetic polymer on linen 200 x 200 cm $32,000 (UNDER OFFER)
Maringka Baker is a senior Pitjantjatjara artist living in the remote community settlement of Kanpi, on the South Australian Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) lands. She was born around 1952 at Kaliumpil rock hole, a traditional camping area in Western Australia. Her painting style is distinguished by a mastery of tone and a selfassured command of colour and composition, which she uses to express a deep connection and knowledge of country. Her work is highly sought after by a loyal group of collectors, and she has been hugely influential on a younger generation of APY artists. Tjungu Palya, Nyapari community, 2018

NGANAMPA NGURA KURUNJARA We would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to Skye O’Meara, APY Art Centre Collective, without her enthusiasm we would not be holding this important exhibition. Thank you also to the art centre managers Annie McLoughlin (Tjala), Anna Watter (Mimili Maku), Roman Stachurski (Tjungu Palya), Mel George (Ernabella), Beth Conway and Heath (Iwantja), and Gillian Steel (Kaltjiti) who have been wonderful in providing support and information on their sensational artists. For many years I have admired indigenous art. I grew up looking at bark painting as a part of my parent’s art collection. I always held such a reverence and knew it to be a sacred territory. Even after 30 years as a gallerist, I could not just start exhibiting it without some kind of rite of passage. I thank my friend Steven Alderton for inviting me out to Amata to meet these people. I feel anointed and finally worthy of sharing the story of their land and country. My Godfather, art critic Robert Hughes, once said that Aboriginal art was ‘the last great art movement of the 20th century’, though it began sixty thousand years earlier. Today I express massive thanks to all the artists for their artworks. We are proud to present a show that celebrates the fact that these communities are continuing to create and produce some of the most relevant and important contemporary art on earth today. -Tim Olsen
