Shifting Light: What moves me, what resonates, finding beauty, the stillness, the quietness, peaceful, calm, solitude, alone with nature, going to a contemplative space.

All this rejuvenates me and has inspired this series of work as I am drawn to the dramatic silhouettes at dusk and twilight, the drama of the ocean, shadows flittering and swaying through dappled light ‌ all accentuated by a dramatic light whether it be stormy, at dusk, contrasting or softened light.

The Pine silhouettes, natures shadows, the last light of the day, where what is revealed and concealed accentuates what remains, bringing you closer the essence. These concerns have been explored throughout all my work over the last 30 years.

The Pine silhouettes border on the calligraphic, emblematic, or evocative of intricate lacework or detailed mashribiya design. The strong, fluid shapes are interspersed by delicate and fragile line work. Nights reduction of details sets the dramatic silhouettes against the richness of the night sky and the last of days light.

In this series I have focused on the detail, highlighting the linear shapes where they meet the sky, juxtaposing the vast and infinite night sky against the details of the weather beaten pines.

Darkness closing in, defines the contrasts, highlights the strengths & depth, the fleeting and the fragile.

Shifting Light, through times of day, weather and seasons, inspires all my work. In particular, twilight, with its iridescent blues and mauves, slowly transforming to richer tones, revealing a depth in darkness, has inspired this most recent series.

The Process: Beginning with a clear intention and vision of what I am aiming to achieve, which is predominantly influenced by the mood and quality of light ‌. The oil paintings are gradually built up in layers, combining wet on wet techniques, layers of glazing and intricate detailed areas reworked numerous times over a period of approximately 3 months ‌. All the time slowly building depth, light, space, harmony and balance.

The charcoals, although not taking as long to produce, follow a very similar process of layering and building, reworking, rubbing out, searching through mark making, rubbing back to slowly build the light, mood, harmony and balance.
