JANIS CLARKE 18 AUGUST - 04 SEPTEMBER THE BACK LANE ‘The Back Lane’ announces the Sydney-based artist’s return to subjects that are both near and familiar. The body of work documents an unpretentious time when our movements were small and our views, modest. Memories from sleepless strolls and sunlit headlands are treated with equal sensitivity, evidencing Clarke’s enthusiasm for the luminous potential of both daylight and its lack. Janis Clarke has long been interested in vision, and the degree to which our glances misinterpret and fantasise. He suggests that painting should do the same, producing unfixed vignettes of remembered scenes. The artist makes particular use of his medium’s raw materials and enjoys the way that colour and brevity can be used to allude to the transient nature of perception. Importantly, his resulting abstractions seek not to codify time and space, but instead try to conjure an embodied encounter with the world around.
