Transit

“An astronomical transit occurs when a planet passes between a star and its observer. Among the many definitions of an astronomical transit, I struggled to find even one that includes an observer. A similar blind spot occurs in photography: the viewer’s role is taken for granted or written out entirely. For Yvette Hamilton, an artist keenly interested in both photography and astronomy, the reverse is true. Her subject is not what the telescope or the camera sees but the act of looking itself.”
- Anne Ferran
Transit is an exhibition of cameraless photography that centres of themes of space, time and light – factors that are central to photography, astronomy and physics. The works in the exhibition have been made at, or influenced by, my ongoing residency at Linden Observatory on Dharug and Gundungurra lands (Blue Mountains NSW).
Cameraless photography was the very first photographic methodology and is now a rising force again in the medium under the influence algorithmic technologies. These works draw on both the past and the present of cameraless practice, from simple light sensitive surfaces to new frontiers in AI.
Transit includes many works incorporate the role of chance whilst recording the passage of time and the influence of the atmosphere onto light sensitive surfaces. The often-abstract outcomes complicate the normally recognisable view offered by photography and instead pull focus on the act of looking itself. As in astronomy, these cameraless works quest to see the unseen, to broach distance, explore the unknown, and to materialise the invisible.
