FORWARD. WE GO. Traditionally, Hawai‘i has always been a place defined by its people’s devotion to working as a community. Whether coming together to lash a canoe, harvest the year’s crops or pulling in a giant fishing net—Hawaiians hui—always considering what each individual has to offer to the greater community. The Hawai‘i of today is no different. Today’s makers—creatives, young entrepreneurs, and local leaders—hone their skills, thrive on passion projects, and build their businesses (and their reputations) through hard work and an unwavering focus on following their own path toward making their dreams a reality. The Hawaiian concept of “imua” translates to “forward, with strength” or “to move ahead towards a goal.” It is a concept deeply ingrained in the people of the Islands. And while “imua” is a Hawaiian word, the experience of following your dreams and building your own future, no matter what obstacles might come, is an inherently human one. We go forward and emerge stronger: together.

Kelsey Takara P E A R L C I T Y, O ‘A H U
As the innovative pastry sous chef at The Pig & The Lady, one of Honolulu’s most acclaimed restaurants, the kitchen is Kelsey “Kels” Takara’s kingdom. It’s the place where he learned to follow his dreams. Leaving his island home to go to culinary school in Colorado, Kelsey returned to O‘ahu to hone his craft, mentored by some of Hawai‘i’s greats like Michelle Karr-Ueoka of another famed local eatery, MW Restaurant. Recently winning a prestigious grant funded by the Ment’or BKB Foundation and the Hawai‘i Food & Wine Festival to encourage young chefs to travel and learn abroad, Kelsey plans to go to Japan as soon as global travel restrictions allow. In the meantime, Kelsey wows the community with his liliko‘i malasadas, frozen custards, and sorbets which they’re currently offering to-go by the pint. According to Kelsey, it’s the mix of fresh, locally sourced ingredients that bring out every mouthwatering flavor in his decadent desserts.

Gavin Murai H O N O L U L U, O ‘A H U
Meticulous and imaginative, Gavin Murai is a renowned resident artist at Lana Lane Studios in Kaka‘ako, Honolulu, as well as an artist at Reckon Shop, Murai's local multidisciplinary creative initiative that emphasizes an “analog, then digital” creative process that tackles projects within the islands and abroad. Using vivid colors, often pulled from childhood memories and places and thoughtprovoking messages, Gavin’s passion for his community translates vibrantly throughout his work. From Pow! Wow! Hawai‘i to FITTED, Murai is so much more than a letterer and artist, leaving his mark on a handful of businesses in the city that have helped friends’ subsequent successes. Murai’s work has become the bridge between art, the community, and the creative spirit that lives in each of us. Fortunately for him, his small studio and workload have remained full even in these challenging times enabling him to uplift the community through art. 6 O L U K A I

Aja Toscano H O N O L U L U, O ‘A H U
A storyteller at heart, Aja Toscano is the creative producer at Chinatown, Honolulu’s vibrant NMG Network, curating content and activations that tell an array of Hawai‘i’s stories. Passionate about the community, fashion, art, and the islands that raised her, Aja collaborates with teams to take a concept and make it a reality. In this new age, more and more of that is being done virtually. Getting her start at ARS Cafe as a barista, Aja began assisting the curation team with monthly art shows in the café’s gallery, curating music and events within the space to bring in a new dynamic. With the art openings and fast-paced events having slowed down for now, Aja’s routine has changed a lot during quarantine. But one part that stays the same – her walks around the neighborhood streets with camera in hand, because as she puts it: “Something about seeing the city on foot helps to put things into perspective.” 17 O L U K A I

Tamara Rigney PA LO LO, O ‘A H U
Once you pass through the door into Paiko, Kaka‘ako’s botanical boutique, you’ll immediately feel the love and knowledge that co-founder Tamara Rigney has for enriching a space with nature’s floral gifts. Hailing from East O‘ahu, Tamara took a chance by investing her time and energy into uplifting the Kaka‘ako neighborhood long before colorful murals adorning building walls came into vogue. From that strong foundation in the developing Kaka‘ako community, Tamara launched several passion projects to give back. She co-authored the book, ‘OHI: How to Gather and Arrange Hawai‘i’s Flora, and helped design and fund a public parklet in Kaka‘ako. Tamara also struck out on her own to found the floral design studio Mei Day, with a focus on the art of floral design. For Tamara, plants are essential to happiness, and are a connection to peace and stillness. Recently, she launched Hawaii Neighborhood Forests, a nonprofit organization dedicated to bringing trees back to urban and suburban communities.
