Feels Like Home

HOLIDAY 2021

Footwear for the Island Lifestyle

An age-old tradition introduced by Polynesian voyagers traveling to Hawai‘i from Tahiti, the act of giving and receiving lei is a cherished greeting and symbol of aloha. They’re used to welcome both guests and loved ones returning home.

on the cover: Moloā Slipper Dark Wood $130 (page 3)

Feels Like Home OluKai has always been guided by comfort and ‘ohana, from the family we’re born into, to the family we choose. These challenging times have kept many of us apart, but this year is a chance to renew the connections and traditions that shape us. We’re sharing the stories of a few young artists and musicians who left Hawai‘i in search of new experiences and opportunities on the other side of the ocean. After time away from the Islands, they’re returning to the place that gave them the strength and courage to leave in the first place. Like receiving a lei from a loved one or seeing a wreath hanging from the front door, there’s no feeling quite as warm and welcoming as coming home for the holidays. Together. We Go.

For Ryan, coming home means reconnecting with his father and with the ocean. Their holiday surf sessions remind him of what’s important in life.

At Home With Ryan Miyamoto Honolulu, O‘ahu Ryan Miyamoto is a Ventura-based cinematographer, director, and producer whose work has appeared on numerous high-profile channels, including National Geographic and ESPN. “I’m always looking through the lens,” he says, “and when I focus, I can see how truly beautiful the world is.” But he doesn’t need a camera to know this. Being able to visit home this year meant finding joy in everyday pleasures, like surfing with his dad in front of his house in Kuli‘ou‘ou and finding grace in traditions. Ryan remembers making laulau with his grandfather every Christmas until he passed away a few years ago. “It’s the one tradition we do as a family to remember him,” Ryan says. “Visiting home this year meant a lot for me. With all the uncertainty in the world, spending time with my family reminded me that the world will be okay. Being around my dad gives me strength and makes me feel like we can get through anything.”

At Home with Joanna Gerolaga Honolulu, O‘ahu After a year of canceled trips, returning home for the holidays this year was a surreal experience for Joanna Gerolaga. A self-taught musician from the age of 13, she left ‘Ewa Beach seeking opportunities in the music and entertainment industry in Southern California in 2017. The time away renewed her appreciation for the trails and waves in Hawai‘i, and for the home her parents raised her and her sisters in. And during the holidays, no trip home is complete without a visit to Honolulu Hale for the city’s annual Christmas tree and lights display. “One day you’re a kid spending the holidays sharing gifts with each other in your family home, and the next you’re thousands of miles away trying to make a living,” Joanna says. “It’s true when they say that the years come and they don’t stop coming. So hug your loved ones tight when you can and always remember where you came from.”

At Home with Angie Chapman Honolulu, O‘ahu Lately, Angie Chapman has been thinking about homecoming. A singer and songwriter based in Los Angeles, she recently released an EP, A Saturn Return, referring to the approximately 30 years it takes for Saturn to return to the same position it was in when you were born. “I feel like I needed to move away from home, to surround myself with others pursuing their art, to have the courage to release such a vulnerable project,” says Angie, who goes by the stage name Eva Saturn and who celebrated her 30th birthday on a rare visit back home to Kaua‘i. This milestone and the holidays gave her a chance to reconnect with her close friends, primarily on the water, through kayaking, boating, and surfing. Christmas morning means returning to a family tradition: joining her dad in trying to beat the crowd by surfing while everyone else opens presents. “Sometimes it worked,” Angie says, “and sometimes other people had the same idea as us.” —
