Mahalo means to me...

Mahalo is usually seen as a simple “thank you”. However, for everyone that has grown up in Hawai‘i, we understand that it is the expression of gratitude towards someone for what they have given you. Whether it is a physical gift, or service, or just simply their time.

The best type of gifts are...

Most of the time, the gifts my family and I have shared with each other are more rooted in time doing service-oriented projects… and the attempt to surprise whoever it is for. It rarely remains a secret, though. I also love giving gifts that can slow down a busy life and lead to learning something new.

Life in Hawai‘i is unlike any other place. You are constantly learning about new ways of life from an unendingly diverse group of people. It’s nice to know that even when you leave here, you can always come back and be welcomed with open, loving arms.

I'm grateful for...

My family. We are very close to one another and truly love to spend time together. I am grateful for Hawai‘i and the connection we have to our ‘āina (land) and our ancestors. It is my home and I am forever rooted here.

Our holiday traditions are...

We love to take the kids to see Christmas lights in the neighborhood and at Honolulu Hale. Another family and close friends tradition that we have is spending a night together during the holidays to play games, make Christmas cookies and gingerbread houses, and enjoy each other.

Quality time means...

Spending time together, whether it be at home or out in nature, means being completely present and giving our attention to each other without any distractions. It’s our chance to bond and have fun. I’m so grateful for those moments.

On our latest trip to Hawai‘i, we teamed up with Brit Oliphant from local nonprofit Board 4 Buddies to surprise some deserving kids with brand new surfboards.

Giving Mahalo with Brit Oliphant

I started Boards 4 Buddies to...

Boards 4 Buddies was inspired by a student in my fourth-grade class. I had tried everything I could to get him excited about learning, but it wasn’t until I gave him a writing assignment about skateboarding that I saw him really put effort into his schoolwork. I learned later that he didn’t have a board of his own, so I reached out to my good friend and professional skateboarder Zach Miller. Zach ended up giving the kid two boards… and thus began Boards 4 Buddies!

Our mission is...

To connect deserving youth with new and pre-loved surf and skate equipment along with the necessary safety and accessory gear to put it into play. Essentially, we serve as the bridge between people’s old or forgotten-about equipment and the kids that would really love to give it a second life!

I'm grateful for...

My community, which has supported me wholeheartedly through the grassroots beginnings of Boards 4 Buddies. I can’t even count the number of people who have helped via board donations, time, or words of encouragement. This project is all of ours, it’s for our keiki (children), and we are only just getting started!
