FOOTWEAR FOR THE ISLAND LIFESTYLE

“NO MATTER THE ISLAND, I FEEL AT HOME.”

ISLAND VISIONS

Jake Marote, Maui

Bryce Johnson, Kaua‘i

THROUGH LOCAL EYES

Elliana Moore, O‘ahu

Offices don’t always have four walls; nowadays, a job can be more fluid, more free. In Hawai‘i, there are those that have forged their own paths, transforming a cubicle into a truck bed, whose boardrooms can be found atop of the Haleakalā crater or down a trailhead in Kaua‘i. And, those who bounce between neighbor islands, collaborating with like-minded, free-spirited colleagues along the way. They’ve traded the subway commute for a 30-minute interisland flight and the carpool lane for an off-road dirt track. It’s this very lifestyle—where the lines between work and play blur—that allows these creatives to see new heights and unique perspectives. Hawai‘i locals, photographers and friends, John Hook, Bryce Johnson, Elliana Moore, and Jake Marote live this very lifestyle day-to-day in the Islands, and wherever they roam.

STEP INTO FRAME

JOHN HOOK You can find O‘ahu’s renowned lensman John Hook in the water at Pipeline and his work on the pages of local magazines. But if you ask him, it’s on top of a dormant volcano on Maui where he’s made his most lasting memories.

Summit of Haleakalā, Maui

What do you love most about hopping over to a neighbor island? I think that there’s a big misconception about people in Hawai‘i getting “island fever,” or feeling like they’re stuck on a rock. It’s so easy to get off the island and see another one, and all of the islands are so different. On neighbor islands you have volcanoes, you have crystal clear water, you have places you can go to see the stars, you have places you can go in the jungle—and all within 400 miles. Besides your home on O‘ahu, what’s one of your favorite places on a neighbor island? I’ve been to Maui a ton of times, but not living there still makes if feel like it’s a new island every time I go there. For me, Haleakalā is special because the first memories I have of it are of my whole family when I was five years old, just bundled up under three blankets waiting for the sun to come up. And then, 15 years ago, I proposed to my wife up there. I found out I wasn’t the first to do that [laughs], but it’s still a special place for me.

‘ĀLAPA

(ah-lah-pah) Active, Athletic Inspired by the fishermen in early Hawaiian culture whose sturdy hand-woven nets could catch enough fish to feed an entire village, the active ‘Ālapa’s heathered mesh upper is an ode to those traditional nets. Designed with style, comfort, and durability in mind, the ‘Ālapa’s waterproof full-grain leather accents and elastic gore panels offer a custom fit while our patented Drop-In Heel® gives you both shoe and slide functionality—without the laces.

As a photographer, do you find yourself collaborating with a lot of other like-minded creatives in Hawai‘i? Yeah, I think because of the friends that I’ve had over the past 10 years, it’s like everybody is in our little creative industry. I’ll know photographers on Kaua‘i, or on Maui, the Big Island, and we’re all into the same things. No matter the island, you feel at home somehow when you go there. Our location really just helps photography, too. When you live in Hawai‘i, your home helps you with work because you already live in the most photogenic place ever.

MAKE YOUR WORK PLAY There’s a common saying in the Islands, “lucky we live Hawai‘i.” It represents the shared sentiment that Hawai‘i’s residents are fortunate to live in such a beautiful, inspiring, and diverse place. And being photographers, where the nuances of work and play often intertwine, the sentiment rings even truer.

HIAPO (hee-ah-poh) Translation: First Born

What makes an OluKai sandal built to travel farther? We like to think it’s a few things: quality materials, craftsmanship, and attention to detail. Crafted with naturally tumbled or marbled full-grain leather, the Hiapo sandal uses hand-sewn traditional whipstitching, complete with moko tattoo artwork details on the footbed. One of our original sandals (hence, its name), the Hiapo only gets better with time. Teak/Teak $110

BRYCE JOHNSON

Kula, Maui

Kaua‘i’s globe-trotting, ever-smiling Bryce Johnson on shooting in Hawai‘i with friends.

Talk to me about being a photographer in Hawai‘i. Is there a sense of collaboration with the other photographers around? Absolutely. Being a photographer in Hawai‘i is so fun. It’s just great that there’s a group of photographers here, like John Hook, that I’ve known for a long time, shooting in the water at Pipeline or just traveling. It’s fun getting to work with good friends, and also getting to see different angles that they shoot and work off of each other. In a way, you’re teaching each other, and at the same time, we’re always learning something together. So that’s collaborative. But in Hawai‘i, we’re always inspired, that’s for sure. Hawai‘i photographers probably have a more authentic perspective, too, right? I think so. We live in such a special place that people want to come to, and save their whole lives for, and we kind of curate what other people see—how they’re seeing what Hawai‘i looks like. So, I think with that, we also have a big responsibility as photographers, too, how to show Hawai‘i in the best, most authentic light and show just what it’s like to be here.

HOUSE OF THE SUN

Haleakalā, Maui’s massive dormant volcano that towers above the island’s coastal communities at over 10,000 feet above sea level, is a world unto its own. Haleakalā, which means “house of the sun”, is a natural wonder and sacred place that is home to rare and endangered native Hawaiian birds and plants, and a dramatic volcanic landscape that amplifies the reverberations of ancient and modern Hawaiian culture. Perched high above the clouds, the summit is known for breathtaking sunrises and majestic (and much less crowded) sunsets. The crater beckons adventure seekers to hike its backcountry trails and bicycle down its western slope.

‘ĪNANA (ee-nah-nah) Translation: Active, Lively With a hydrophobic perforated footbed to shed water and weight, and a streamlined, breathable one-piece mesh upper for a seamless fit, the lightweight and athletic ‘Īnana is built for durability and performance in natural environments. SEE HALE‘IWA AT OLUKAI.COM

What was it like island hopping with Bryce and John? There was so much collaboration, and that’s what I love about this whole process. You can give 10 people the same camera with the same lens, put them in the same location, and they’re going to come back with completely different results. That’s such a cool thing about photography and film work; everybody has such a different perspective. How does collaboration help you as an artist? It reminds me to always be open and perceive the different ideas that the people around you have, even if it’s something that maybe you would never usually do. Once you give it a try, if you like it you end up putting your own little personal flare on it.

What’s your favorite thing to shoot? I love shooting right after the sun sets and it’s kind of like that blue hour. Dusk has a real eerie, mysterious feel to it. You have all these orange lights, but the sky is still really blue. I also love to shoot in the ocean. It’s been a recent discovery, but I love the ocean because it’s always different. Every wave that passes you is completely different than the one that came before. You’re never going to get the same thing in the ocean, and I think that’s something that I love, even with shooting with film photography in general, it’s really hard to mimic. You have to let go of control because you don’t know exactly what the ocean is going to give you, and you don’t know exactly what the film is going to give you. It’s like you’re entrusting part of the creative process to the ocean.
