Plattsmouth has a rich history that stretches back to the 1800s. The town is located where Nebras ka’s two biggest rivers – Platte and Missouri – come together. The confluence of two major waterways attracted early American explorers and large migra tions of people heading to the West.
In July 1804, the Lewis and Clark Expedition camped along the Missouri River not far from pres ent-day Plattsmouth. Expedition members wrote down information about the area before continuing their historic journey through the Louisiana Pur chase to the Pacific Coast. A replica of a pirogue used in the expedition is on view at Caboose Park on the east end of Main Street.
Traders and explorers became familiar with the area over the next several decades, but the late 1840s and early 1850s brought action that put the city of Platts mouth on the map. Libeas T. Coon established a ferry across the Missouri River in 1848 to help people contin ue their journey on the Mormon Trail to Utah. Samuel Martin received the first permit to establish a trading post near the Platte and Missouri confluence in 1853.
The Plattsmouth Town Company formed in October 1854. The city was mapped out by surveyor O.W. Tyson on the west side of the Missouri River, and Nebraska Territory legislators approved the creation of Plattsmouth on March 14, 1855. The town’s first mayor was Wheatley Mickelwaite and the first City Council members were Enos Williams, W.M. Slaugh ter and Jacob Vallery.
Mary Stocking taught students at the first school in Plattsmouth in 1856. The school was located on what was then known as Gospel Hill. By 1860, Platts mouth had two primary schools with 90 students. That number increased to 214 the following year and skyrocketed to 1,069 by 1881.
The first churches in town were established soon after Plattsmouth was formed. Baptist, Methodist and Pres byterian denominations were organized from 1856-58. The first building for St. John’s Catholic Church was constructed in 1861, and the congregation completed its first parochial school building in 1881.
Word of Plattsmouth’s successful start soon spread, and the town was ready for additional economic and
residential development by 1870. The population increased to nearly 5,900 by 1880.
An important event occurred in September 1880 when a railroad bridge opened over the Missouri River. This allowed Plattsmouth to create additional connections to Iowa and other Midwestern states.
The Burlington & Missouri River railroad company employed many Plattsmouth residents from 18901940. Plattsmouth was home to railroad tracks, roundhouses and machine shops at the current site of Rhylander Park. A total of 800 men worked at the site during its heyday. The Burlington Refrigerator & Express company began operations in the 1930s and boosted the town’s population even more.
Numerous businesses began opening their doors along Main Street in the 1870s and 1880s. Many of the original buildings are still standing today. The city’s Main Street Historic District is listed on the Na tional Register of Historic Places. A total of 45 build ings are listed on the national register. Many of them have a special plaque on their outside walls that tells about their particular history.
The landmark Cass County Courthouse was finished in 1891 in downtown Plattsmouth. Designed by Lincoln architect William Gray, the courthouse is one of the most recognizable features in Cass County. It is home to many county legislative and judicial services today.
On June 22, 1903, the Nebraska Masonic Home opened its doors on what was then the northwest edge of Plattsmouth. The building has served as home for thousands of residents from across Nebras ka over the past 119 years.
A large nature area was created in 1947 when the State of Nebraska acquired 1,164 acres of Missouri River bottomland east of Plattsmouth. Originally known as the Schilling State Game Preserve, it is now called Schilling Wildlife Management Area. It is home to many species of birds, fish and smaller animals.
Notable people who were either born in Platts mouth or lived all or part of their lives in town in clude novelist and screenwriter Raymond Chandler; John O’Rourke, the subject of the American Civil
War song “When Johnny Comes Marching Home;” John Falter, who drew many cover paintings for The Saturday Evening Post; and Hazel Abel, who became the first woman elected to the U.S. Senate from Ne braska when she served in 1954.
