Emerging designers LUXury Apparel Runway collections
SPRING 2014 ISSUE 1 $5.00

I am delighted to introduce Design Parliament –a new incubator and development agency investing in top emerging design talent.

Having grown up within the context of both my father and grandfather’s fashion businesses, and then working in beauty and apparel around the world for the last 23 years, I think it is fair to say we are at a crossroads in the apparel and luxury consumer industry.

There is considerable consolidation and growth among mega brands, coinciding with reduced variety in the retail market. On the other hand, there is an explosion of emerging designer talent. We believe consumer demand is creating an opportunity for more selection and innovation. However, it is diffcult for retailers to support new, unproven designers. Without support, these talented designers will not be discovered, nor have the opportunity to expand. Design Parliament has created the solution. We discover, nurture and invest in the best emerging design talent and help them grow as retail brands.

We are excited about this emerging talent – you can fnd some of them in this magazine and at fashion events around the nation. While many of the Design Parliament fnds are likely to be from traditional “fashion hubs” in Europe, Asia and on the US coasts, we already see potential stars from unconventional places too. The rise of independent design talent has been witnessed by my wife, Brook, and the wonderful board of advisors involved in the Fashion Institute here in Omaha.  They are continually dazzled by the fashions coming off the runway at Omaha Fashion Week and are deeply motivated to provide more resources and opportunities to aspiring Midwest designers.

We look forward to bringing brands the Design Parliament team discovers from around the world (and our own backyard) to leading boutiques and retailers near in the future. Thank you for loving fashion and being part of the new democratic design revolution!

An alternative to ubiquitous luxury brands, Toronto based designer Dennis Merotto, offers a fresh, modern perspective with excellent quality and ft. He has quietly honed his minimalist and deeply thoughtful design aesthetic gaining praise from clients for polished and restrained collections. His collections provide women with beautiful clothing options to live, work, and travel in.

Animated by his distinct vision, he passionately explores a fresh take and discovers an unwavering drive to offer his own interpretation of modern-chic dressing. Despite a successful career spanning 25 years during which he has built a substantial and loyal following, Dennis Merotto is disarmingly modest when discussing his achievements. As Senior Designer for the internationally thriving Lida Baday collection for nine years, he perfected his technical skill creating clean, fattering lines and executing impeccable details and precision fnishings for each and every item made. Lida Baday clothing has become a major collection for many preeminent retailers, beginning with Bergdorf Goodman and evolving to include major retailers such as Saks Fifth Avenue and Nordstrom, as well as Holt Renfrew stores across Canada.

With his own label, Dennis takes his tailoring expertise to a new level of sophisticated chic, continually evolving his fashion sensibilities for his discerning clients. A brief overview of the last two seasons is included here and Dennis’s new Spring 2014 collection is available to preview at New York in September. DennisMerotto.com

Even though it’s uncool you love? My parents.

Best thing about your hometown?

My dad is in the army so we move almost every 3 years. I don’t really have a hometown but my favorite place I ever lived was Germany. The best thing about Germany is the scenery and travel; 4 hours to Paris, 6 hours to Holland and 8 hours to Italy!

Brand you would love to model for?

Well, I’m related to Calvin Klein and have always wanted to meet and model for him.
