Welcome to another season of Omaha Fashion Week!

We might be a little biased, but we believe this is the strongest year yet for the Midwest fashion design community. When you see all of the amazing talent on the runway this season, we think you will agree. It’s hard to believe that OFW is rounding out its seventh year!

One of the most gratifying aspects of this production is watching young people explore their talent, creativity and leadership capability – whether as a designer, model, hair stylist, makeup artist, photographer or backstage assistant. We are proud of the 36 high school designers who showed for their frst time on the OFW runway at Student Night in March (see coverage in this issue!). Programs that we partner with, such as the Joslyn Art Museum’s Kent Bellows Mentoring Program and 4-H provide unique experiences for young people who are interested in exploring a career in the fashion industry.

At OFW, we like to start them young – even in kindergarten! Tis summer we put 60 kids ages fve to 16 through our frst ever Omaha Fashion Camp, with the help of our friends at Develop Model Management. Campers used a wide variety of skills to complete a garment for a fashion show at the end of camp. All of these unique programs are creating a ground swell of talent – and we are now hearing from organizations on both coasts that Omaha is becoming a city to watch for the youngest of emerging designer talent. Te future is very bright!

All of the remarkable improvements in the local fashion community couldn’t have happened without the support of the FASHION INSTITUTE MIDWEST (FIM), a non-proft that supports local designers with coaching, educational workshops and the provision of micro grants up to $1,500. Te 15 grants issued in the frst half of 2014 have already yielded great results – much of which you’ll see on the runway this week. We want to thank a growing group of people who are investing a tremendous amount of time, talent and treasure to support the Institute; including the 120+ members of the Fashion Institute Guild; the Fashion Institute Midwest Board of Directors; the Fashion Institute Midwest Selection Panel; and of course the Fashion Institute Midwest Designer Coordinator, Buf Reynolds.

Tis week culminates with the awarding of the Fashion Institute Midwest Fashion Cup. On Saturday’s Finale, you will see 12 designers compete for this $10,000 prize package. It was extremely competitive to get into Finale this season, with only fractions of a point separating designers. Winning this award can catapult a designer to the next level in his or her career. Last year’s winner, Dan Richters, has since landed his collection in an LA Showroom with celebrities and stylists lining up to wear his garments at Red Carpet events; and he worked with Luis Alvarez and the Aquage Artistic Team on a photo shoot that is now on the front cover of internationally renowned hair industry magazine, Hot Magazine.

Once this season of OFW wraps up, there are still more opportunities to get involved in the local fashion scene! We now have a vibrant, year-round calendar of events in which you can participate. Stay up-to-date on upcoming events by logging on to OMAHAFASHIONWEEK.COM. Two events in September we are particularly excited about: Trendevous at Younkers Westroads on September 20 and the Fashion Impact Awards presented by the Fashion Institute Guild on September 26 at the Omar Arts & Events Center.

Tank you for supporting us and the local fashion scene, we hope you have a wonderful season!

love beginning the fall season with Omaha Fashion Week. As a designer selection panelist for the Fashion Institute Midwest, I previewed the collections set to debut at Omaha Fashion Week and am awestruck by the talent presenting this August. With over half of the designers new to OFW and a fourth of them traveling from other cities around the country, it is easy to see why this is an exciting time for fashion in Omaha! In “On Te Radar” we highlight one of the city’s most captivating designers, Dan Richters, who currently has a design on the cover of international publication, HOT Magazine.

Our fashion spread, “A Cut Above,” features sporty fall pieces from local designer collections that showcase the competitive, American spirit in us all. Characterized by a sporty, more casual air, that American spirit is now being exported in fashion around the world. It comes complete with references to the ease, freedom and inconography of the “American Dream” which is being brought to life in high-end sneakers on Karl Lagerfeld’s runway; Moschino garments with four-fgure price tags sporting Budweiser and McDonald’s logos; and former Givenchy designer Riccardo Tisci collaborating with Nike. It is a booming time for American fashion designers, and thrilling to see such momentum of inspiring talent here in the heart of the country!

Enjoy the season and the issue!

JEWELRY DUJOUR

‘It is so easytobe in love with jewelry.’

What Do WearYouTo:

Work?

I love yellow gold! I think the color and shine add a nice look of professionalism.

Soccer game?

Usually very simple here. A pair of hoop earrings and a watch to track the time.

Wedding?

Pearls are always a great choice.

I think they are very romantic and classic.

Traveling?

If it is a beach trip, a simple gold pendant.

If I am heading to NYC, the sky is the limit.

I really will bring a diferent ensemble for every outft.

I wear a pendant with my boys’ initials on the plane. It makes them feel close to me.

Date night?

When I am out with my husband, I love to wear pieces he has picked out for me.

My foral Roberto Coin Cento ring is my favorite piece he ever gave me, besides my wedding ring!

How long have you been in the jewelry, fashion industry?

I started with Borsheims right out of college! It seemed like a very glamorous place to work and I was right. I started out in Gif sales and then moved into Accounting to head up the Inventory department. As a result, I got to try on every piece in the store, learn about diferent stones, and fnd out why every piece is special. From there I moved into Buying and was given the chance to see what the world has to ofer in terms of design. Te trade shows we attend feature pieces from around the globe and we love fnding the perfect pieces for our customers.

Describe your personal relationship with jewelry!

It is so easy to be in love with jewelry. When we are buying merchandise for our showcases, the buying team is always thinking, “Who will wear this? What moment are they celebrating? How are we making this occasion special?” It really creates a way to remember those special times and what you are celebrating.

What inspires you?

I wear pieces that remind me of my boys when I am traveling. I wear my father’s class ring when I miss him. Tat is what is so great about our business—jewelry creates this connection to our emotions and memories. Sometimes literature inspires me, for example if I am reading Jane Austen, then I want to wear a vintage piece. When I read Joe Hill, I like to wear more edgy designers like Stephen Webster or Alexis Bittar.

How do you keep your collection fresh?

Keep mixing the old with the new. Some of my favorite pieces I have had 25 years. But you can reinvent them by layering with new pieces. I love the Stephanie Kantis line, which is new at Borsheims. She has great pieces that layer in with my existing collection. Really fresh and updated!

What is HOT in accessories this fall?

Layering bracelets is very popular. I love and own a lot of Miracle Icons bracelets. Designer Mary Jo Pane is an Omaha native and Borsheims is proud to carry her line. I love the antique metals and the message of faith. I am so glad that yellow gold is popular right now. Te coloration is so rich and it works well with so many colors. Roberto Coin has hit a homerun with the Pois Moi collection that was launched fall of last year. Tey have really continued to build on it. I love that it has a 1950s feel but is still so modern. Marco Bicego introduced their Delicati collection this year, which are smaller pieces that are really fun to layer. I love Alex Woo, she really has something for everyone. I have a yellow gold dog paw layered with a little ‘c’ and ‘d’ for my dogs Daisy and Cooper. So cute!

DAN RICHTERS

Approaching his seventh collection for Omaha Fashion Week, Dan Richters is still one of Omaha’s most captivating designers. Revealing he has been a creator most his life, Richters views Omaha Fashion Week as the “birthplace” of his becoming a fashion designer.

Richters has had quite a busy year since winning the inaugural Fashion Cup last August at Omaha Fashion Week. The winner is chosen by the Fashion Institute Midwest Selection Panel and is awarded a large prize package that includes cash, scholarships and marketing support. “The prize money helped me create a look book and travel to California,” Richters said. This is the second year in a row Richters has been personally invited to present a collection at Orange County Fashion Week in LA by the event producer, Kathy Marino. In March 2013, he showed during Avant Garde night at Orange County Fashion Week. This March he showed in the couture category and closed out the entire weeklong event.

Through his online exposure from Omaha bloggers and a network of various photographers, stylists and media outlets Richters met in California, he was asked to house his collection at LA showroom La Masion De Fashion on Melrose Avenue. “I took my collection up from Laguna Beach to LA to the showroom expecting to only leave a few pieces and she wanted me to leave them all. So I came home with an empty suitcase,” he said.

Since March, Richters has done multiple photo shoots, has been featured on Red Carpet celebrities and has been published in over a dozen online and print publications! Richters had the opportunity to work with Luis Alvarez and the Aquage Artistic Team on a photo shoot that is currently on the front cover of internationally renowned hair industry magazine, Hot Magazine. Luis Alvarez and the Aquage Artistic Team will be styling Richters and his SS2015 collection debut on Wednesday, August 20 at Omaha Fashion Week. A behind the scenes video from their cover photo shoot will be shown before his collection. Richters will also present a select number of pieces from his new collection on Saturday, August 23 during the Finale, when a new Fashion Cup winner will be revealed.

Richters’ collection is inspired by the concept of legends, mythology and fairy tales, entitled “LORE.” Design elements in the collection have Irish as well as ancient Grecian influence. The pieces are to be considered carryovers from another time, pieces of forgotten stories finally seeing light. “I like the idea of dressing people who create contemporary lore. People whose presence generates legends,” said Richters.

Richters has also been working on upgrading his DIY materials. “My base material is a silicone specially designed for skin effects and prosthetics. I now have control of the material’s viscosity and work life,” said Richters, “It has been a steep learning curve with a lot of trial and error, but I have finally reached results I am happy with.”
