FROM THE PUBLISHER
Welcome to the Omaha Design Center! Our creative community now has a place to call home. A place where they can create, showcase, sell and celebrate. After weath -
fashion shows in venues and tents around the city, we are elated to have a permanent roof over our heads at Omaha Fashion Week.
When OFW started nine years ago, we never imagined it would grow into its own brick and mortar space. This wouldn’t be possible without the support of all of you! We would especially like to recognize SAC Federal Credit Union for their long-term support as presenting sponsors of OFW; and amazing partnership from Greg and Molly Cutchall, of Cutchall Management who have helped make this dream a reality.
The mission in building the Omaha Design Center was to create a stable, blank slate environment where creatives can bring their ideas to life. We look forward to hosting not only fashion shows, but concerts, dance parties, art openings, weddings and charity events. The Design Center includes an exhibition space, art gallery and a retail area for local artisans.
This week we look forward to celebrating the success of 23 designers who have made it through the rigorous process of preparing for Omaha Fashion Week. There are lots of new faces...many of whom have grown up through our talent pipeline at Omaha Fashion Camp and Student Night. It’s exciting to think that these early experiences
on the monumental task of preparing their own collections. We wish them all the best of luck and hope you enjoy this season!
Sincerely,
Nick and Brook Hudson ProducersFROM THE EDITOR
Back in late elementary school, I remember running home as fast as I could in hopes of discovering a glossy new copy of the American Girl Magazine or Seventeen curled up in my mailbox. I would rip out pages full of inspiration and dog-ear the edges, saving that my crush would show if he liked me. These magazines, although quite juvenile, were what ignited my passion for journalism, graphic design and fashion.zines, it has been my dream to become a magazine editor. I (and my 6th-grade to become the editor for this issue of Omaha Fashion Magazine.
Throughout the late nights and endless caramel macchiatos, this experience of putting together Omaha Fashion Magazine has been nothing short of extraordinary. As an Advertising and Public Relations student at the University of Nebraska- Lincoln who will be graduating in May, this has been an incredible opportunity to grow professionally and learn more than I could have imagined about this industry. Every word, in every caption, under every photo meant something to me as I typed it, and was the simple recognition that each and every contributor has worked for. These designs, styles, and photographs are all individual works of art that were created by passionate designers and professionals, all compiled into this 52-page magazine and a week of fashion. Every page has helped to further my appreciation and astonishment at those involved in this industry, and it was an honor to organize and highlight them in this publication.
sion that I marveled at when working on this magazine. From breathtaking underwater photographs in the section “Below the Surface” [pg. 19] by Heather and Jameson Hooton, to a complete recap of August’s show designs, [pg. 29]
makeup superstar Chevy Kozisek, which focuses on her past work and hopes for Omaha’s growing arts community on page 13. As we shift towards spring, a season for fresh new outlooks, let us take a moment to celebrate the thrilling, glistening talent that surrounds us right here in Omaha. Cheers, and enjoy the issue!

PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOSHUA FOO INTERVIEW BY TAYLOR KUHLMANWalking up the staircase and stepping into the plush ambience at Victor Victoria, I could sense the enthusiasm and passion buzzing through the air. While I have no doubt this contagious energy was coming from every employee, upon meeting Chevy I could tell instantly it was truly her exuberant spirit that lit up the space. She has been in the salon and spa industry for over 16 years, and in 2006 she won the award for Best Esthetician in the 2006 Reader’s Choice Awards. She has since led makeup and videos, high fashion photo shoots,
the Darkness and April Showers. Chevy is not only recognized nationally for her work but is also an integral part of the Omaha arts and fashion scene. She has been a strong presence at Omaha Fashion Week since it’s founding in 2008. So, I wanted to sit down with Chevy to talk about her journey through her career, love for Omaha and what her hopes are for the local fashion scene.
How did you become interested and start professionally in the beauty industry?
I originally had gone to school for engineering, but I just decided it wasn’t for me. At the same time, I was kind of fascinated with the
When I moved to Nebraska, there wasn’t just a make-up school, so I went to school for aesthetics and moved into the make-up end of things. I do a lot of make-up for

Is there one project in particular that was a real high big project, or something you really enjoyed that was

days here in Nebraska and it was kind of a dark movie because it’s based on the Columbine shooting. I had days where it was basic make-up, just regular people, but then there were other days

and everything to someone else on the team, and then go in
It was 12-hour days, 6 days a week, for a month. It was challenging…really challenging. Just having that experience, I think, really gave me the will. It was just such an amazing team, the crew came in from Hollywood, but they used local Nebraska talent.
The PAs, the entire hair and make-up team was from here, I got to meet some really great people on that set.
If you want it in Omaha, you can have it.
A lot of times, people don’t really think of Nebraska as
even Omaha as a leading
city in fashion but we have one of the biggest fashion weeks in the country. What do you thing makes this place special?
There’s nothing in our city that says we cannot. There’s nothing in our city that’s stopping the arts in any way, shape, or
form. There’s actually a really, really strong network of people encouraging the arts. We do have a booming music scene. We do have a booming fashion scene. I’d
scene, too. With tax incentives, and senators and things ... if you want it in Omaha, you can have it. That’s the magic of Omaha. We’ve got enough crazy creatives that will be like, “I’m going to do this,” and they actually follow through and do it. It’s just magic in the ground here that people don’t realize is here.
Speaking of that growth, since you’ve been here and watched it all happen, what lot of work?
There were events that we would put on with The Reader and some other things, where it was like the “glam VIP event,” which myself and Erik Stokes started back in 2003, maybe 2004. If you wanted a fashion show, you was a lot of dressing models up, and walking them through a bar because that’s what we had. But, you work with what you have until you build it into what you want it to be.
When Omaha Fashion Week started, I remember that we had done a glam VIP event at Nomad, and we had done this history of women type of thing. We went from ancient Greek goddesses, all the way up to this modern woman where we even did a live haircut. We all of a sudden hit the home base to do these types of events. It was the seed that was planted and it began to grow from there. Since then, our team has done multiple videos, multiple photo shoots, we have done quite a lot with the local and some national media so It’s been good.
As far as this Omaha Fashion Week, do you have any exciting things in store that you’re already planning? What are you excited for?
I am excited for the new space. We’ve been doing it for nine

is going to cooperate. I’m really excited for this brick and mortar, and what this is going to grow into. I think that’s what I’m the most excited for this year. Also, we do have a team that’s going to compete in the Sunday show,
the team to make room for new talent, to keep that energy going. I’m excited to see what they get and what they come up with, and also to just sit back and see that
from the audience, that point of view. I usually stay backstage, and I don’t know what’s going on. I’m excited to get dressed up and actually make an evening out of that, and just watch what everybody does.

An explosion of fashion design talent is putting Omaha and the Midwest on the fashion radar. Some individuals are achieving international exposure and concrete success as aspiring designers. Many need help in the form of business advice, sourcing materials, training in techniques, support in developing and marketing their brands, guidance to be accepted to fashion school, opportunities to build a portfolio of work and investors for manufacturing.
