of summer, we think of taking a break. The kids get a break from school, you have saved up vacation time, and the unpredictable Nebraska weather (temporarily) rewards us with sunshine and warm nights. But we know as parents that the world doesn’t stop come the end of May. School may be on hiatus for the kids, but work and life continue.
What’s the camp philosophy? A good summer camp should focus on achievement, belonging and friendship and is inclusive.
HEN WE THINK
Summer sports and playdates with friends keep the carpool just as busy as during the school year. You soon realize you dipped into more vacation time than you hoped when you caught the flu with the kids back in January. And your youngest didn’t have the best year in math. Summer really shouldn’t be a break for him. “Learning loss is a serious concern over the summer months,” says Jenny Holweger, vice president of programming at the YMCA of Greater Omaha. “Children who attend summer camp not only develop character and discover their potential, but bridge the achievement gap as they continue to cognitively grow and stay engaged with learning in their time out of the classroom. And they have fun while doing it.”
When choosing a summer camp for your children, it’s much more than choosing where they will spend their days. It’s choosing an environment for your child to continue to learn, build friendships and a sense of community. But with so many camps to choose from, where does a parent start? Here’s some questions to ask yourself to help guide you in the process.
IT’S CHOOSING AN ENVIRONMENT FOR YOUR CHILD TO CONTINUE TO LEARN, BUILD FRIENDSHIPS AND A SENSE OF COMMUNITY.
Does the camp have a specialty or focus?
What do we need from summer camp? Ask yourself why you are shopping for a summer camp and if a camp meets your logistical needs. Day camps may have before and after care available while destination camps, like YMCA Camp Platte, may offer a bus route.
Will your child need one-on-one attention or special accommodations because of a disability? Talk directly to camp directors to make sure your child’s needs will not only be accommodated but the camp builds an inclusive environment for your child. What is your budget for summer camp? Is financial aid offered to help your kid attend? What will a day at camp look like for my child?
Make sure you fully understand how groups and the child-counselor relationship works in your camp so your child has a sense of belonging and welcoming in the camp. omahamagazine.com

What kind of outcomes does the specialty camp promote and is this something your kid would enjoy? Making sure camp is a place where your child can accomplish tasks, whether that goal be learning to scuba dive, improving a jump shot, or meeting a new friend, will make summer camp a fun and rewarding place. Do I feel like this is a good fit?
By now, you should have all your in-depth questions answered by a camp director, you’ve checked your mom group sources and the decision making is down to your gut. So ask yourself—Will this camp be a positive place for my child to build memories, friendships and make strides and grow over the summer? If the answer is yes, looks like you’ve found yourself a winner. Now pass the marshmallows, please! FamilyGuide

As a kid, I attended Camp Wesley Woods, a Methodist-based camp in Indianola, Iowa. My favorite camp was Ranch Camp, where I spent a week riding a horse and learning about all things equine. As a teenager, I also enjoyed volunteering as a counselor for Camp Wesley Woods' camp for the mentally and/or physically disabled. This camp paired teenagers one-on-one with a camper for the week or weekend, and I still smile to think of my buddy Ron, who loved to dance and was happy to experience each day’s adventure. These days, summer camping means traveling in my Volkswagen bus with my husband to places new and old. This year we plan to attend a festival in Loveland, Colorado, as well as attend our annual excursion to Indian Cave State Park near Shubert, Nebraska.
Whether camping in your household means sending the kids away for a week for some “adult time” or planning a family vacation, this issue brings our readers lots of useful information. In fact, most of our articles in this issue deal with camping, from our Exemplary Educator Austin Hill to our dream article about some of the coolest camps in America (Space Camp, anyone?).
Not all of the articles pertain to camping, for those who prefer other activities, or simply don’t have the cash flow to send youngsters to camp. There is plenty of summer fun to be found here in Omaha, from family-friendly festivals to fan-fest at the College World Series. Parents who want their students to continue their academics during the summer can find information about various summer school programs from area superintendents.
No matter what this summer brings, whether it is a week at Camp Winnarainbow in Berkley, California, or a couple of evenings at Jazz on the Green, there is no doubt that summer is the coolest season of all. FamilyGuide

ANY OF THE 70 Catholic schools
in the Archdiocese of Omaha offer summer programs. They range from academic enrichment opportunities to extracurricular and athletic offerings, and parents are encouraged to call the school of their choice to learn more about them.
New to the offerings this summer is Roncalli’s Benilde Program. The goal of this program is to help students with learning difficulties be successful in high school, help prepare them for college, and show them how to embrace life with wisdom, courage, and faith. Accepted students take coursework over the summer, thus affording them a lighter course load during the academic year. These same students will then take the Benilde course during the school year, which will teach them self-advocacy skills, study skills, test-taking strategies, and how to utilize many other resources to maximize student success. The Catholic school community provides support, a sense of belonging, and friendship like no other.

T’S IMPORTANT TO remember that
learning is a year-round activity. Students have the opportunity to remain academically involved and connected through our summer program offerings.
Summer school: Summer school is offered for elementary students entering kindergarten through sixth grade. Secondary summer school will be offered for students entering seventh through 12th grades. Science, technology, and math camps: STM Camps provide in-depth curriculum experiences at high levels for incoming sixth and seventh grade students. All three camps integrate the engineering strand into the classes.
Summer day camp: This field-trip based summer program is offered to all Bellevue Public Schools’ students entering first through seventh grades, and is housed at the Lied Activity Center. Providing opportunities for students to remain engaged over the summer not only supports their academic development, but also their overall well-being. Through the support of TeamBPS, our parents, and community members, we are confident that we will continue to serve our children well.

S THE 2016-2017 school year closes,
we reflect on this year’s accomplishments and look to opportunities for development during the summer.
Elkhorn students at all levels of education are flourishing, ranking above state averages in testing and maintaining a high involvement level in extracurricular activities, with over 80 percent of students participating. Elkhorn High School and Elkhorn South High School were again named to the College Board AP Honor Roll, and activity teams performed at the highest caliber.
This summer, in addition to the multitude of community-offered opportunities, EPS provides options for furthering academic and athletic skills, including summer school and Kindergarten 101, encouraging student preparation for the school year, and a district-sponsored Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) class. Students may also register for P.E. courses and sports camps, including basketball, softball, football, and more.

MAHA PUBLIC SCHOOLS is an
emerging leader in urban school districts across the nation.
Throughout the past several years, we have: worked with the board to develop the district’s first-ever strategic plan; reorganized the district, focusing on supporting schools and improving building-level leadership; raised test scores across the entire district to historic highs in all core subject areas; helped the district pass the largest bond issue in Nebraska State history (2-to-1 vote) to launch much-needed renovation and construction upgrades at schools; started purchasing land for two new high schools and two new elementary schools; and led significant technological improvements for staff and students. Throughout the summer, OPS typically offers summer school programs to students who need additional academic support to help prepare them for the fall. In addition, OPS offers swimming lessons and sport camps at various schools, Camp Invention, and a summer musical for our families.

HILE THE SCHOOL year is coming
to end, our drive towards continued success within PapillionLa Vista Community Schools is not slowing. Looking back on the 2016-2017 year, I am extremely proud to be serving as the superintendent of an outstanding school district that is committed to meeting the individual needs of our students. Our PLCS staff is second to none, and their dedication and determination is what makes PLCS known for greatness. Throughout the next couple of months, we will continue to work on and refine our high school visioning plan. Our goal is to take the feedback collected from our community groups and finalize a vision for what future high school education needs to look like in PLCS. With summer break right around the corner, we hope families take the time to relax and reflect on this past year’s accomplishments. We know that the future remains bright when we all work together. Enjoy your summer and know that PLCS is committed to making the 2017-2018 year known for greatness!

ALSTON PUBLIC SCHOOLS will
be busy places this summer. For students moving to a new building, we offer “bridge”—where incoming seventh and ninth graders get an early look at life in middle and high school. Staff design experiences to provide a smooth, quality transition—and families tell us it makes a difference.
This summer, many students will find additional academic support, keeping them on track when school returns. High-ability learners will stay engaged with dynamic summits that expand learning. Past workshops included coding, biomes, and digital imaging. Our teachers will be on the move for home visits, fostering stronger bonds with the families we serve. The Ralston Public Schools Foundation offers fun, educational field trips and activities for elementary-age students enrolled in Little Rams. We are thankful for partners like Ralston’s Baright Public Library that offer even more space to explore and grow. Keep reading and stay engaged this summer!

UMMER IS A time for fun, splash-
ing in the pool, and dangling your feet in the creek as you look for salamanders and crawfish. Or at least that was what I liked to do in the summertime of my youth. I continue to advocate for children to have fun all year, especially in the summer. Here at Westside Community Schools, we continually work with teachers and staff members to infuse learning with joyful experiences.
Parents can plan summer activities as a family to allow children to continue learning throughout the summer. Explore free activities, such as those provided by the Omaha Public Library. Talk to your child care provider about fun options. Tying your summer activities to specific books helps encourage children to read. Omaha has endless opportunities for learning while having fun.
Overall, the most important aspect for parents is to simply spend time with their children. FamilyGuide

ONE OF HIS FAVORITE PARTS ABOUT WORKING WITH KIDS IS TEACHING THEM ABOUT ANIMALS. HIS MENAGERIE AT PAPIO NRD INCLUDES NEARLY 30 REPTILES, AN OWL, AND AMPHIBIANS.
A
USTEN HILL KNOWS that camping
is an exciting, even vital, part of kids’ summers. He does his part to make sure the Papio NRD camps stay exciting. “I like to do different activities that they may not get to do every day,” Hill says. “Many of the camps I’ve been to are kind of cookie-cutter in that they do they same activity each year, or each day.”
Hill’s camps include a variety of activities, and while the campers might see a snake each year, Hill makes sure to talk about different snakes so kids who may have come before learn something different.
It’s an amazing idea, especially realizing that Hill is a one-man show. He coordinates everything from spring registration to summer counseling. He uses Pinterest and other internet sites to find fresh ideas and learn new things himself. Of course, many of his ideas come from his own life experiences. Hill grew up in West Omaha, in an area that included a cornfield and a wooded area where he ran around as often as the weather permitted, fishing, hiking, and pursuing other activities.
It’s that interest in the outdoors, and in learning new things, that drew him to this position at the NRD. While earning a degree in wildlife and fisheries, he thought he would pursue research as a career. A summer job at Fontenelle Forest showed him his true calling of education. Now, Hill is the education assistant at Papio NRD. His school-year job is coordinating programs for students. He helped to produce 250
WILD ABOUT TEACHING KIDS TO BE WILD programs in 2016, working with schools four out of every five days during the academic year. Some schools come out for field trips to the NRD, while many other days Hill travels to schools. “We’ve worked in a lot of inner-city classrooms,” Hill says. “Not every school can be outside … at least I can bring the environment to them.”
One of his favorite parts about working with kids is teaching them about animals. His menagerie at Papio NRD includes nearly 30 reptiles, an owl, and amphibians. It is one of the kids’ favorite parts as well. “A lot of people talk about keeping kids’ attention,” Hill says. “I never have that problem.”
Kristen Holzer, a zoology and biology teacher at Millard West High School who has worked with Hill at camps and at her school, concurs. “It’s amazing how much kids get excited,” she says. “They love hearing about the animals. He’ll let them handle them, so he passes around the snakes and things. Of course, the kids all get out their phones and take photos with them.”
At least, they take photos during school visits. The camps involve a lot of old-fashioned fun … spending time and energy hiking, kayaking, learning archery, and many other activities away from the often-ubiquitous screens. “They can’t have cell phones,” Hill says. “We take those away first thing so the kids aren’t tempted to look at their phones while we’re doing other activities.”
10 FamilyGuide
| Spring/Summer 2017 |
While many parents want their kids to be connected, Hill says he finds the parents of his campers often embrace the idea of unobstructed time in the woods. The kids are always supervised, and the exposure to the environment gives them a chance to learn and grow. Hill himself is part of the reason why NRD camps and programs are fun.
“I think what makes it so cool is that he has the ability to relate to young kids and high school kids,” Holzer says. “He has a really good skill set for his job. I enjoy working with him too.” That ability to relate allows him to help kids confront their fears, and learn new things themselves.
“Kids are fearful of everything,” Hill says. “I’ll have kids who are scared of a tiny bug that can’t even fly. Then I’ll show it to them, and they get first-hand experience, and they learn this is not something to be afraid of.” He also teaches environment classes, from tree planting to an annual Water Works field day for fifth-grade students. Papio-NRD also hosts the metro’s Envirothon Competition, an annual environment-themed quiz competition by the National Conservation Foundation aimed at high school students. Conversely, his perspective becomes refreshed thanks to the kids. “We get dull to things,” Hill says. “We step right over earthworms. Sometimes it takes a fouryear-old to get awed by earthworms. That’s a good feeling.” FamilyGuide

HE TIME IS swiftly approaching when
parents will have to sit down and have “the talk” with their children. This heart-to-heart shouldn’t be taken lightly as the child’s response could have a serious impact on their future.
The subject matter? What summer camp should they attend? This is a right of passage and tradition for some; for others, it is an introduction to what will become a career or lifelong passion. While campfires, canoes, and "Kumbaya" are associated with traditional summer camp programs, other organizations across the country have transformed the annual break into something truly extraordinary. When choosing an experience as unique as your child, consider a camp catered to their imagination. Whether they dream of becoming an astronaut, fashion designer, marine biologist, or musician, there is a platform available to them. While groups of boys and girls are roasting marshmallows and crafting in commons areas, the youngsters at these one-of-a-kind camps are fostering special skills, pursuing their passions, and opening their minds to a world where life is lived outside the box.

OLLEGE HAS BECOME increasingly
Part of the problem, Grandgenett says, is that the camp titles do not reflect experiences that are seen as great resume-builders. Parents who want to accelerate their students in their studies may actually benefit from allowing their student(s) to delve deeper into a subject.
expensive. A semester at the University of Nebraska at Omaha now costs more than $3,000, leaving many parents—and students—wondering how to increase their ROI on college expenditure. One of the best ways is to go into a profession that relies on science, technology, education, or mathematical knowledge.
Young people with a bachelor’s degree and with three or fewer years of experience in their field earn less than $40,000, according to a study conducted last year by Forbes, but those in STEM occupations can earn much more. One of the highest paid STEM positions, a petroleum engineer, can earn more than $85,000 with only three years’ experience and a bachelor’s degree.
Unfortunately, those lucrative loan-repayment-worthy STEM professions are underrepresented by minority and women employees. Stereotypes persist, discouraging possible candidates based on the misconception that STEM fields of study are “hard” or “boring” or “unwelcoming.” Neal Grandgenett, the Dr. George and Sally Haddix Community Chair of STEM Education at UNO, says it’s not hard to break those stereotypes. Engaging students in camps or extracurricular activities can be effective in establishing an interest in these fields.
“I THINK IT’S CRITICAL THAT PARENTS GIVE KIDS THE ABILITY TO GET INTO SOME OF THESE FUN CAMPS. THERE’S FUN THINGS LIKE ROCKETRY AND ROBOTICS. ” -Neal Grandgenett
“I think it’s critical that parents give kids the ability to get into some of these fun camps,” Grandgenett says. “There’s fun things like rocketry and robotics. They’d be better off doing that than getting kids into more traditional math camps.”
16 FamilyGuide
“Parents may gravitate away from something like “The Science of Zombies,” because it doesn’t sound useful, but it might have practical applications,” Grandgenett says. “They might talk about disease transmission and how to prevent it. The title of the camp may not be reflective of how applicable to the STEM fields it really is.” Even throughout the school year, Grandgenett says, there are a lot of ways that students can become interested in these fields. One way is to attend speaking engagements that are open to the public. Omaha Performing Arts, for example, showcases “National Geographic Live,” in which noted researchers, writers, and photographers spend an evening discussing their adventures. These guest speakers can make STEM subjects sound exciting.
As well as being fun, Connie O’Brien, director of the Aim for the Stars summer math and science camps at UNO, says making sure boys and girls are given an equal chance to succeed in these areas is essential. O’Brien says, “In the last 10-15 years, we have caught on to the fact that we need to teach in ways that catch [girls’] brains. When we give kids a rocket to build, for example, boys will pull out one item, then another, then start putting the two pieces together. Girls take out all the pieces and make a picture in their minds, then assemble the project.” continued on page 18 >

“On a day-to-day basis, I’m researching physical settings,” Sambol explains. “What’s around it? What type of things might affect building it? Does it contain contaminated soil or groundwater? Wetlands, do they need to be mitigated? Are there permits that needs to be maintained?”
It didn’t work for Allison Sambol, either. Sambol is an environmental scientist at Felsburg Holt & Ullevig, and a prime example of using a college degree to dive into a STEM career.
“Part of my job is in development,” Sambol says. “Working with my clients, developing relationships, and determining communities’ problems, and how people can solve those problems.”
“I was expected to get a college degree in nursing or teaching,” O’Brien says. “That didn’t work for me.”
“I am a geographer. I went to college and I took all general studies, and my geography course was my favorite,” Sambol says. “When I graduated, I was looking for jobs; I looked for anything that had consulting in the title.”
Eventually, Sambol realized that her work decisions affected many aspects of people’s lives, and she began to see the benefits to sticking with environmental science.
Being in a STEM-based career, however, does not mean that she researches alone all day.
The possibilities for a student who becomes interested in STEM subjects are limitless. Those working with computers, specifically, are much needed in Omaha and nationwide.
“The number of computer science positions is far outpacing the number of graduates we will have in those careers,” Grandgenett says. “One in five positions in computer science will not be filled due to not having the people with the skills.” FamilyGuide

LOOK OUT FOR SUMMER PESTS AND PLANTS HRISTINE JACOBSEN LIKES to see parents
taking their kids outside. “There's more of a risk to keeping them inside,” she says, citing obesity and other problems. Jacobsen, the education specialist for the Papio-Missouri River Natural Resource District, often heads summer camp programs and outdoor field trips for students. Jacobsen says she took her own children outside frequently “from the get-go.” When her children were infants, her husband and she would take them on hikes in carriers. Her children now appreciate the outdoors. Jacobsen says that the more parents can get their kids outdoors and learning about their natural world, the better. Many parents fear what dangers may lurk outside. Jacobsen says, “Here in Nebraska, especially in eastern Nebraska, there's really not a lot to be worried about,” noting that any venomous snakes, such as rattlesnakes, are restricted to western Nebraska. However, one should learn to identify and avoid minor perils such as nettles, poison ivy, ticks, and mosquitoes. Jacobsen advises that nettles are a common plant hazard. She describes nettles as a woodland underbrush, about 2-3 feet tall, with green “sawtooth leaves.” She says they are invasive and often establish in disturbed places such as areas that have been mowed or tilled over. “They move in and take over an area,” she says. The bottoms of the leaves contain irritating hairs that cause redness and itching, she says. Jacobsen's nettles remedy in a pinch: “put mud on it.” She also advises wearing long pants when in the woods. Like nettles, poison ivy irritates the skin. Look for “mitten shaped” “leaves of three,” says Jacobsen. She also says poison ivy is typically seen in the woodlands, where it grows as a short, understory plant and as vines. “It's the first vine to turn red in the fall,” says Jacobsen.
20 FamilyGuide
Reactions to poison ivy can include blisters, inflammation, and swelling. Jacobsen says the oil in the leaves is the cause of these reactions, and that the oil can be transmitted. Jacobsen's remedy: washing the site to lift the oil. She advises seeking medical advice for severe reactions. Ticks are another nuisance. Jacobsen says that although the incidence of tick-spread lyme disease (typically by deer ticks) is low in Nebraska, hikers should be mindful of ticks. These arachnids are tear-drop shaped and have small heads. Dog ticks are generally larger and light brown with an “hourglass shape” on the back. “Deer ticks,” she says, “are like pepper—they're tiny.” Use insect spray as a precaution. She acknowledges that many parents don't want to put DEET on their children, but Jacobsen recommends it, noting that after being outdoors children should take a shower to wash it off and to look for ticks that may have attached. Nobody likes mosquitoes, but they can be avoided. Jacobson advises using DEET to avoid them as well. She says mosquitoes are most active at dusk and dawn. Mosquito bites can be irritating. “Don’t scratch,” she says, noting that breaking them open can introduce infections. Jacobsen recommends cold packs and calamine lotion for bad bites.
Even with these minor hazards lurking outdoors, it is worthwhile to let children explore nature. They will form happy memories of hiking in the woods, playing in the mud, or catching their first fish, and develop an appreciation for active living. FamilyGuide

10 CHEAP THINGS TO DO IN OMAHA THIS
T
HIS IS GOING to be no ordinary
summer in Omaha, and the best part is, you won’t have to budget much to enjoy it with your family. There are inexpensive and free activities throughout the metro, from a pool with a pirate ship to a trail that leads to a waterfall. There are indoor and outdoor film series for families, as well as free festivals. Here are 10 ideas for cheap fun in Omaha.
continued on page 23 >
FEATURE CONT'D < continued from page 21
1.
SPRAYGROUNDS
For free water fun, head to one of the city parks with a sprayground: Benson Park, Fontenelle Park, Kountze Park, Orchard Park, Seymour Smith Park, Upland, Morton, Westwood Heights, and Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge Plaza. These spraygrounds are great because they’re also near playgrounds. You can find additional outdoor fountains and spraygrounds that cost no admission to play in at Omaha Children’s Museum, Joslyn Art Museum, Shadow Lake Towne Center, and the First National Bank Tower.
2.
FESTIVAL S
Free summer festivals in Omaha have kid-friendly aspects to them, while introducing new things to see, hear, and taste. Dance at a music series like Jazz on the Green at Midtown Crossing and Stinson Park at Aksarben Village. The Omaha Summer Arts Festival has an entire area dedicated to children’s activities. Shakespeare on the Green has a tent of costumes for children to try on. Taste of Omaha is free, but you’ll want to buy tickets for food and rides.
3.
HIKES
For the price of park admission, an adventure awaits on a nearby trail. One kid favorite is an easy trail that leads to a waterfall at Platte River State Park just outside of Omaha. Head to Hummel Park to search for the staircase that always baffles its climbers—no one can settle on how many steps there are. For a gem hidden in the middle of the city, visit Heron Haven Nature Center just northeast of 120th and Maple streets.
4.
UNIQUE POOLS
may not be included. Kids Skate Free is a similar program. SkateDaze participates in this program that allows children 12 and younger to skate for free once a day all summer long. The skate rental fee isn’t included.
Swimming is fun no matter where you go, but some local pools offer some fun extras worth checking out. The popular city pool at Lake Zorinsky has waterslides and a fun splash. Cross over the Missouri River to Council Bluffs to visit the city pool, Pirates Cove Pool, where kids can play around a pirate ship and use two waterslides. Head indoors to the Salvation Army Kroc Center and check out the newly renovated pool and waterslide.
5.
8. FAMILY MOVIES SERIES
Ruth Sokol of Theater at Film Streams has a great series for families, and children’s tickets are only $2.50. They show a mix of classics and first runs. Large chain theaters often have film series during the summer featuring slightly older movies at a discounted price. Check your closest Marcus Theatre and AMC Theatre to see if they’re participating. Check the calendar of events for Midtown Crossing and Sumptur Amphitheater to see when they show free outdoor movies.
EXPLORE THE OLD MARKET
The Old Market has so many things for kids to see, hear, and taste. On Saturday mornings, stroll the bustling farmers market. Visit any day of the week and you’ll likely encounter musicians playing music and charming horse-drawn carriages. Kids love the Old Market Candy Shop and Hollywood Candy. Head to The Passageway for toy store Le Wonderment, and then go on a hunt for the Zodiac Garden hidden behind an art gallery there.
9.
6. DOWNTOWN FUN
There’s more fun just beyond the Old Market. Slide down the big slides at Gene Leahy Mall. At Heartland of America Park, you may catch a gondolier offering inexpensive rides around the lake. Cross the “The Bob” pedestrian bridge to take that iconic picture standing on the state line. The building at the base of the bridge is the Lewis & Clark National Historic Trail Headquarters, which has a visitor’s center with free kid-friendly activities.
7.
10.
There are two national programs for children to sign up for that get them free rentals at local venues. Kids Bowl Free allows kids to have two free games each day all summer long. Shoe rental •

FORT ATKINSON
On the first Saturday and Sunday of the month, May through October, head to Fort Atkinson to see interactive historic recreations depicting life 200 years ago. Children can complete a scavenger hunt, earning a little treat at the General Store for finishing it. Actors shoot off a cannon during the re-enactment, which is cool for some kids and too loud for others. A state park permit is needed to get into the park to see the re-enactments.

FAN FEST
Feel like you’re a part of the NCAA Men’s College World Series experience for free at Fan Fest right outside the stadium. You can get into the spirit by playing interactive games, taking a photo with the trophy, meeting players, and soaking up the atmosphere. Fan Fest is open through the run of the series. Go to Open Day Celebration to catch batting practices and autograph sessions, concluding with the opening ceremony and fireworks. That’s all free, too.

ISTANT FROM THE city lights
and engulfed by nature, one might feel overwhelmed by the unidentified bustle in the bushes, the sticky humidity, and the irritating mosquitoes. For the Johnson family, it means they’re all together, and it’s their home away from home. Ransom and Julie Johnson have taken countless camping trips with their kids.
The couple upgraded their tent size as they welcomed their children over the years. The Johnson clan—which includes Grace, 9; Ella, 11; Nate, 19; and Merci, 27—camps together several times each summer. Ransom and Julie agree that the family time spent outdoors together gives their curious children a much-needed chance to disconnect and explore.
"THEY MIGHT BE KNEEDEEP IN MUD AND THEIR CLOTHES ARE ALL WET, BUT IT DOESN’T MATTER." - Julie Johnson
“They might be knee-deep in mud and their clothes are all wet, but it doesn’t matter,” Julie adds.
The family spent several days last year on a camping trip to Yankton, South Dakota. More often, however, the family spends long summer weekends at Two Rivers State Recreation Area in Waterloo, Nebraska. Although it is only a 30-minute drive, the couple says it is the perfect distance from home. “One thing that always amazes the kids is how much they can see once they get out of the lights of town. How much more brilliant the stars are,” Ransom says.
When everyone feels cooped up in the house, and the kids are bickering with one another, the short escape does a lot of good for their family. “You get them out to the campsite for twothree days and they don’t have anything to fight about anymore,” Ransom says. “They have to rely on each other. They get along with each other.”
“It’s good to see them get out and open up their minds. Instead of saying, ‘Oh entertain me,’ it’s ‘What am I going to find to do?’ And they always find something,” Ransom says.

"IT’S GOOD TO SEE THEM GET OUT AND OPEN UP THEIR MINDS. INSTEAD OF SAYING, ‘OH ENTERTAIN ME,’ IT’S ‘WHAT AM I GOING TO FIND TO DO?’ AND THEY ALWAYS FIND SOMETHING." l-r: Ella, 11, and Grace, 9, spend quality time in their family tent.
- Ransom Johnson
MEET THE FAMILY CONT'D > continued from page 30 Ransom has been camping for as long as he can remember.
He introduced Julie to the leisure activity when they were dating. While they started out with a two-person tent, they’ve accumulated quite the camping haul. Over the years, they’ve built up a supply of two 10-person tents, a couple of smaller tents, a canoe, and many pieces of cooking equipment. Their supplies range from coffee pots, to coolers, to Dutch ovens.
Most of the time, their camping meals consist of burgers, sandwiches, or hot dogs. Other times the family eats fruit, or chips and other junk food. “It kind of just depends on how much planning and preparation is involved,” Julie says. “Sometimes we just grab what’s in the cupboard and go.” The spontaneity, Julie says, is what makes the trips so memorable.
“The kids can be sitting, reading, and then they see something,” Ransom adds. “And all of the sudden they’re off to investigate whatever leaf blew by, or whatever it may be.” Much of the children’s love for nature can be attributed to their respective involvement in Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts.
Ransom himself was a Boy Scout. From the parents’ perspective, their kids’ involvement in the programs has been a crucial part of their growing up.
“It teaches them responsibility to the community and to the family,” Ransom says.
The Boy Scouts troop the Johnsons' son attended camped 11 times per year—sometimes more. Beginning in the fifth grade, they took an annual week-long camping trip to Camp Geiger near St. Joseph, Missouri. There, the boys would stay in tents and earn merit badges. The Girl Scouts also have the opportunity for an annual overnight wilderness experience where they stay overnight, hike, shoot archery, and take in the nature.
“It’s really about slowing down,” Julie says. “When we’re hustling and we’re talking, we miss seeing the deer or the wild turkey. I try and encourage the girls to just be observers of nature.”
It is plain to see where the love for outdoors stems from in the Johnson family. All the family members appreciate the little moments in the camping, hiking, and memories made on their highly anticipated summer adventures. FamilyGuide
GOING GREEN Help Omaha Magazine Fight Deforestation
OMAHA MAGAZINE HAS JOINED AN INNOVATIVE PROGRAM TO COMBAT DEFORESTATION. AND WE NEED YOUR HELP. The initiative, called Print Relief, plants the number of trees equal to our printing needs by calculating the trees consumed by the printing of our magazine. They plant the number of trees equal to our tree usage in endangered forests around the world.
IN THE NEXT YEAR ALONE, THIS INTERNATIONAL PROGRAM WILL ALLOW US TO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE PLANTING OF ALMOST 1,500 SAPLINGS IN BIOMES AROUND THE GLOBE THAT HAVE BEEN RAVAGED BY DEFORESTATION. HERE’S WHERE YOU COME IN: We’d like readers to help us choose where our trees should go. We will create a survey on our Omaha Magazine Facebook page. You can choose to help reforest Brazil, Mexico, Madagascar, the Dominican Republic, Burkina Faso, or Ethiopia.
The couple started their son young by not only signing him up for Cub Scouts while he was in the first grade, but serving as the group leaders for a few years. Their son, now 19, participated in Boy Scouts, working his way through the ranks to earn the title of Eagle Scout.
The two younger girls, ages 9 and 11, have been involved with Girl Scouts from a young age. Julie helps out as a co-leader with both troupes.
We will determine the top votegetter and pass your wishes on to the folks at PrintReleaf. Then, together, we can help battle one of the greatest threats to the health of this planet.
“It’s important,” Ransom says. “It lets kids explore so many different things … in scouting you can touch on everything from cooking and sewing to rock climbing, robotics, and 50-mile hikes.”

WORK ETHIC, HIGH GRADES, AND SUMMER C AMP K E E P HOCKEY PLAYER IN THE GAME
Larry Mercier III
T
HERE WILL BE a time in Larry Mercier
III's life when he won't be lacing his ice skates and pulling a hockey sweater over his head. Until that time comes, the Papillion-LaVista South High School senior is determined to enjoy—and give back to—the sport he has played since second grade.
It was not readily apparent on an unusually warm and sunny day this past January, but the clock was already ticking down on Mercier (pronounced Muhr-SEE-err) and his time as a competitive high school hockey player for the Omaha Jr. Lancers. At 5-foot-8 and 155 pounds, he is a bit undersized by hockey standards. But talk with any of his teammates and coaches and you will find out the forward-playing right wing more than makes up for his diminutive stature with a give-it-everything-all-the-time attitude on and off the ice.
Even with the best work ethic, the numbers are not in his favor. Only 10 percent of the nearly 36,000 boys playing high school hockey will make it to the collegiate level, according to 2015 figures as provided by scholarshipstats.com. So Mercier is trying to make the most of his hockey experience by lending a hand to others who are pursuing that dream.
During a winter practice at Ralston Arena, Mercier was easy to spot in a forest green practice jersey that stands out amongst a midst of powder blue, black, and neongreen-colored jerseys worn by the other two dozen players on the ice. He led a drill that had each player sprint the length of the ice while guiding the puck, then taking his best shot to fire it past one of the team's waiting goalies. Occasionally throughout the hour-long practice, a whistle sounded. It is a signal to every player to sprint and skate several times around the center logo on the ice. It is one way to stay in top-flight condition built from a foundation of off-season training. omahamagazine.com

Offseason hockey camps are just as important as regular season practice or the approximately 40 games that the Omaha Jr. Lancers will play between October and March. Camp is a time to become a better skater, to improve on puck handling, or to work on shooting, passing, and individual skills. An hour on the ice in the summer and another hour of "dry land training" can often be the difference between making the roster of a team at the next level or ending up as a player who does not make the cut.
For the past two seasons, Mercier has been passing knowledge from his own regimented training routine to youngsters on the Jr. Lancers bantam program, a team made up of seventh and eighth graders who aspire to play high school hockey. His younger brother, Logan, took that path to Jr. Lancers' junior varsity team. "I liked to help out with their practices, whenever we don't have games on the weekend and they did," Larry says." >

< Sometimes it was just fetching water bottles or pucks after drills. Other times, I would be in the locker room before games and give them a little pep talk or tell them what I was seeing between periods."
While helping youngsters at camps is a possible career option after college, more realistic is Mercier's path of progress in academics, not athletics. The past four semesters, the honor roll student has juggled a full load of advanced placement courses for college—government, history, honors calculus, statistics, and physics. His diligence off the ice is preparation for a career in engineering or aerospace engineering … possibly even an appointment to the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
"Maybe I can become a test pilot of some sort," he says with a tinge of enthusiasm. "I have always liked math. It not only has come easy to me, but I also enjoy it. That's why I am thinking engineering." One of Mercier's instructors at Papillion-LaVista South, Dustin "Bubba" Penas, noticed his potential in the classroom immediately.
"Larry is an outstanding student who always came prepared for class," Penas says. "His positivity and smile were great to have and he was very engaged and active every day. He is a go-getter who will be outstanding in anything he goes into. He is able to take on any project and will always see it through to the end.” And that end, as far as hockey is concerned, is likely right around the corner.

"I have always loved hockey ever since I started playing it," Mercier says. "But there is a point for every athlete that they have to pick what they really want to do with their life. I have gotten to the point where hockey has been my passion. But I don't think I want to play anything that is too huge as far as a time commitment. In the end, my education is going to be what gets me far in life. So I am hoping to focus on that." FamilyGuide
