Letter From the Editor

Thank you for picking up our inaugural issue of Nebraska Ever After!

Here we prioritize local local couples, local venues, and local businesses. We aim to be a reflection of Nebraska’s wedding scene, providing not only sweet stories, but also helpful tips, resources, and inspiration to aid you in planning yours.

Having my own wedding coming up in the spring, I am extra excited for this magazine. I realize how difficult it can be to put everything together during the planning process; I have been scouring all the essentials available in Nebraska and have found multitudes of resources at my fingertips, and I am eager to share some of the hidden gems I have discovered.

From flowers to food, this edition covers essentials. Blush Bridal, located in Lincoln, highlights the fact that every bride has her own unique style and the importance of catering inventory and service to each individual.

Florals can be tricky to pick, so we talked to Bouquet Omaha about how to choose the perfect flowers and decor for bouquets, tables, and all your other floral needs. Season, budget, and color are all important factors, and they all come together to create a unique aesthetic, so each needs to be considered carefully.

The surging popularity of charcuterie boards has bled into the wedding scene, making the famous finger food a highly sought-after option for showers and receptions. Artisan Boards of Omaha, a local charcuterie company, notes that charcuterie can be composed of not just meats and cheeses, but fruits, nuts, candies, and anything else that doesn’t require utensils to eat.

We also spotlight Nebraska couples who have recently had beautiful weddings, and include details to inspire your own wedding choices. Finally, we have curated a resources guide so Nebraska couples can have local businesses at their fingertips, all in one place. Welcome to your new go-to publication for romance and bridal aesthetic!

How to Choose Blooms for a Memorable Wedding

FEATURE // STORY BY LINDA PERSIGEHL // DESIGN BY RENEE LUDWICK

Celebrated French Romantic writer Victor Hugo is credited with having penned this famous floral adage, which simply and eloquently professes that love and connection are essential elements of a rich human experience.

As symbols of love, beauty, and fertility, flowers have played a starring role in nuptials for centuries dating back as far as 800 B.C.E. Today’s brides continue the tradition, incorporating greenery and blooms in their wedding ceremonies and receptions in ways that continue to evolve.

ife is the flower for which love is the honey.”

Sarah Pflug, manager and lead designer at Bouquet Omaha, a floral design studio in Clocktower Village, lends her floral expertise every day to bridesto-be looking to create their dream wedding. Pflug said most brides come into the family-owned shop with only vague ideas of what blooms they want to include in their bouquets or décor, or how many arrangements they need for their special event. In most cases, cost comes into the equation quite early.

“A lot of times their wedding planner helps them divide up their wedding budget and determine what they want to spend on flowers,” she said. “I would say maybe 75% of the brides we see have a planner. They’ll come in and tell me, ‘We need to stick to this price point.’”

Together, the planner, floral designer, and bride meet for a consultation to leaf through photos and inspiration images found in magazines, Pinterest, and the like to determine the bride’s personal preferences and create a vision for the wedding. Then they talk through specific needs (how many table centerpieces, bridesmaids bouquets, etc.), and costs. In the end, they develop a wedding flower proposal that spells out all the details.

“Our full wedding packages (which include the consult, flowers, accessories, setup, and tear down) start at $4,000,” Pflug said. “As of last year, I would say we’re seeing an average floral budget of between $7,000 and $9,000. For this, they’re getting everything that they need the compotes, pedestals, vases, arches, candles…We’re two services in one: florals and rentals. We can even source special rentals for them lanterns or vessels to create custom centerpieces, for instance if they want.”

Meg Swindlehurst, a studio florist operating as Meg Kathleen Designs in Lincoln, said the majority of brides she sees come in with a set wedding color scheme (for bridal party attire, venue décorations, etc.) and a general floral style that they like, but with little knowledge about what particular varieties they want.

“Occasionally, you’ll get a bride that says, ‘I really want peonies.’ But most of the time, they’ll leave it up to me to guide them toward which flowers would best represent the overall aesthetic they’re looking for,” she explained.

Selecting theIdeal Venue for Vows

When planning a wedding, the decision of the venue tops the list as a priority.

Barns, farms, and ranches remain popular destinations for many couples. The Knot, a global wedding marketplace, reported that 18% of couples preferred an idyllic site.

In comparison, the traditional banquet hall stayed steady as the most desired choice at 20% in 2023. The national average cost of a venue could run about $12,800 on a $35,000 budget, while Nebraskans and Kansans spend close to $5,700. Those newly in love dedicate almost 40% of their overall budgets to location alone, making it essential in the planning process.

“I would recommend looking for a venue that has a real approach to how they can help you plan a wedding without any surprises,” cautioned Brook Hudson, the CEO and Marketing Director of Omaha Event Group. Hidden fees such as corkage, cake cutting, and service charges could eat into a couple’s savings.

Marley Bredehoeft, logistics designer with 402 Events, agrees that purchasers should stay alert for added fees, especially at private residences. Although flexible compared to renting a locale, homeowners must invite strangers such as caterers into their kitchens. Plus, staff moves items like tables, chairs, and flatware into the environment. Sometimes, a landscaping crew must level the ground for tents, put down gravel, or plant flowers before the big day, which adds up.

In January, Omaha Event Group plans to launch new prices to include better transparency so customers know the full scope before committing.

“This way, it’s pure enjoyment instead of being blindsided with costs or to-do items,” Hudson said.

Omaha Event Group handles about 200 weddings each year at four venues: Omaha Design Center, The Garden Room, Empire Room-Midtown Crossing, and the Leo Ballroom. The venue selections should depend on what interested brides and grooms desire from the experience of their wedding days. Omaha Design Center allows for 500 guests with an industrialized modern appearance. Guest counts have trended downward due to inflation, so others may prefer the intimate vibe of the Garden Room for a 225-person event that includes wisteria hanging from the ceiling and greenery dangling from the piano. The Empire Room’s backdrop overlooking Turner Park combines convenience and romance for a head count of 350. The historic Leo Ballroom holds about 325 with elegant marble floors, natural light, and ornate plasterwork.

Another tip from the pros: consider hosting outside the usual summer wedding time. The Farnam Autograph Collection’s spectacular views of the holiday twinkling

lights at the Gene Leahy Mall display a winter wonderland for guests when nighttime comes.

“The space speaks for itself. When I’m driving home, I can see (the Farnam) lit up and people dancing. It sounds super cheesy, but it’s my favorite part of the job,” said Sarah Wynn, the catering sales manager at the Farnam Autograph Collection. “I helped them make that memory.”

Hotels add a pull for out-of-town guests since no one needs to travel farther than the ballroom. Couples can pick from different food options from the Dynamite Woodfire Grill, rather than utilize private caterers at the Farnam, located conveniently downtown. All-inclusive amenities becomes a hot ticket item for accessibility.

Hudson believes the best indicator of a solid venue relies on who responds promptly.

“If they can’t, or pull teeth to see a tour, it’s not going to be a good experience,” she said.

Kassidy Arena, a senior reporter for Nebraska Public Media, selected her venue partly based on customer service at A View West Shores in Waterloo, Nebraska. The venue provided amenities that drew Arena, who has little patience for planning, into the space on Memorial weekend last year. Her fiancée, Jacob Nall, a financial analyst with the state of Nebraska, wanted to exchange vows next to a scenic lake. The sunset views blended with the navy blue, dusty rose, sage, and champagne-colored theme with a dreamy period appeal. The interior smelled like spring, with flowers filling the area so much the florist even held up the wooden frame behind the newlyweds because it kept falling over.

“My biggest advice is to take your time. Don’t feel rushed. If it doesn’t work out in the place you wanted, that wasn’t the place for you,” Arena said.

Arena warns not to pick a venue with multiple weddings since it could become frustrating with strangers walking past during photographs, which happened during her big day despite the venue doing a solid job of corralling the guests at the other two nuptials.

Outdoor weddings like Arena’s depend on midwestern weather, which can change without notice. Multiple tornadoes last year meant a solid backup strategy indoors, something most Nebraska venues provide. Bredehoeft recommends a tent, too, despite the investment, just in case the wind changes at a moment’s notice. A specific vision, whether a timeless black and white or a Verona sunset theme, helps to narrow down a spot. Or if someone feels adventurous, couples can choose Lauritzen Gardens or Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium. Most of all, Bredehoeft reminds brides and grooms to relax and enjoy the location.

Ross & Rachel Love Story

SOULMATE SPOTLIGHT // PHOTOS PROVIDED // DESIGN BY RENEE LUDWICK

T Homebrew

to I Do

his story begins with beer and brew kettle, Ross and Rachel met and bonded over a shared love of homebrewing. On the second date they brewed a German lager together (a very ambitious choice for a brew date) and that beer agreeably turned out to be one of the worst beers the couple had ever made however from that day forward blossomed a bubbling relationship. Six months later COVID hit, the world shut down and the couple navigated their relationship living separately through the ups and downs that COVID created, growing stronger and feeling fortunate to weather the storm together. They joined an online local D&D (Dungeons and Dragons) group, continued to homebrew together and prioritized family game nights with their two children (one child each from previous relationships). When the world opened back up the couple remained committed to family time by continuing family game nights, family international cuisine dinners and taking as many vacations together as possible. The couple continued to support each other’s personal demands, working full time, maintaining individual households and single parenthood, which meant sometimes going without seeing each other for many days at a time. In November of 2022 Ross made grand plans to propose on a vacation to Napa Valley, he accidently left the engagement ring in the car parked at the airport, dashed back to recover it and the couple missed their flight to San Fransisco. They did end up making it to Napa Valley with a slight delay and on Nov 17th at the base the beautiful hillside vineyard at Robert Mondavi Ross proposed. Everyone cheered and cheers’d for the newly engaged couple. It was amazing.

Wedding planning ensued, both Ross and Rachel, having been previously married, wanted a destination wedding to change it up. The couple narrowed down destinations and picked a date: June 1st 2024 because it was a Saturday, easy to remember and available. The couple chose Dreams Les Mareas Resort and Spa in Playa El Jobo Costa Rica as their tropical wedding destination. The couple made it very clear the destination wedding attendance was optional, and no gifts allowed. The wedding week came and despite many Ross and Rachel FRIENDS related references and puns, surrounded by a large number of family and friends, with Ross’s son Mason as best man and Rachel’s daughter Ava as the maid of honor the two tied the knot on the beach then jubilantly celebrated the union of their families.

Marriage in your 40’s, blending families and combining two households has unique challenges but built on a strong base have no doubt any obstacle can be overcome. Marry your best friend, marry someone who supports your dreams, goals and ambitions. While Ross and Rachel are accustomed to following brewing recipes, they wanted to share a different kind of recipe with our readers.

Recipe for relationship success: Communication, laughter, patience, support, mutual respect, creating space for the other person to be themselves, forgiveness, and cooking/brewing together. The last two pieces of advice are generational family advice for a happy relationship: drink your coffee black and don’t be an asshole.

Honeymoon Destination

We did go to Europe and visited five countries in 16 days but that was with our kids so not technically a honeymoon.

We are planning a Japan trip for 2025.

Joseph & Katie Dawson

Our story is the essence of “when you know, you know.” We met as newcomers to our first jobs, fresh out of college. As the office tapped the newest hoi polloi to do the boring work, little did they know we took up the task willingly. Because from the moment we met, we clicked. Soon enough it was a first date, introductions to friends over drinks, and approval from family via the embracing of family traditions. After a year of dating fast, we got engaged, and decided to take the ensuing time slowly. We were engaged for seventeen months, and had the opportunity to craft our dream wedding, where no idea was a bad one. It was the most effortless process with not an ounce of stress, thanks to devoted family members and a vendor team that, over time, became friends.

At the end of the day, our wedding was everything we hoped it would be, and more. There never has been, nor will there be again, a day when all of our once-separate loved ones come together under the same roof - except for one. And it was as surreal as we thought it would be. What’s more, it was a flawless start to our future life, to be lived both fast and slow.

A Welcoming Boutique with Styles for Every Bride

t Blush Bridal in Lincoln, owner Emmy Gorman created a bridal experience centered on inclusivity, variety, and a joyful atmosphere that celebrates each bride’s unique vision. “Our collection was thoughtfully curated to cater to a wide range of personal styles, body types, and wedding aesthetics,” Gorman shared. Blush Bridal collaborated with reputable designers known for their blend of classic and modern styles, and even developed its own in-house line, Sweet Nothings. “We were committed to inclusivity, which is why we carried an extensive selection of plus-size gowns, ensuring that all brides, regardless of size, could find a gown that felt like ‘the one,’” Gorman explained. The team continually evaluates the latest trends, balancing current styles with timeless designs to offer a fresh, inspiring selection for brides-to-be.

Blush Bridal also made an impact through its creative and fun social media presence. Gorman and her team have produced videos that showcase bridal fashion in an approachable, imaginative way. “Our social media videos were all about making bridal fashion accessible, fun, and inspiring,” Gorman noted. Ideas for these videos came from the team’s collective creativity and passion for connecting with clients. A popular video series styled wedding dresses for characters from the show “Bridgerton,” where the team matched each gown to different characters’ personalities. “We wanted to give a fresh, imaginative spin on how certain gowns could

align with different personalities and styles, which really resonated with our audience,” Gorman explained. These videos built excitement for brides-to-be, allowing them to experience the boutique’s passion and playfulness before stepping inside.

Staying ahead of bridal trends is a core value at Blush Bridal, and Gorman emphasized the dedication her team put into curating a versatile collection. “We followed bridal fashion developments closely, traveling worldwide to designer previews to understand what was emerging,” Gorman said. Stylists were not only knowledgeable about current trends, but also attentive to what local brides requested. “We always kept timeless designs in our rotation gowns with clean lines, classic lace, and soft romantic touches that were just as stunning today as they would be in years to come,” Gorman said, highlighting Blush Bridal’s dedication to serving traditional and modern brides.

For brides unsure of their dream gown, Blush Bridal offers a relaxed and supportive journey. Gorman described a thoughtful discovery process where stylists encourage brides to try various silhouettes and fabrics, helping them find what truly resonates. “Our stylists were trained to listen deeply and make recommendations based on subtle hints about what made a bride feel special,” she shared. Each appointment became an enjoyable, confidenceboosting experience where brides felt understood and celebrated.

At the heart of Blush Bridal is Gorman’s commitment to a warm, pressure-free atmosphere. “Key factors in our atmosphere include our friendly, knowledgeable stylists who genuinely care about each bride’s happiness and the beautiful, cozy space we created,” Gorman noted. Private appointments allow for an intimate experience, with optional touches like champagne and comfortable guest seating to make the moment feel truly celebratory. By building rapport with clients, Gorman’s team ensures that every bride creates a cherished memory as part of her wedding journey. This commitment to a supportive and joyous environment has made Blush Bridal a beloved destination for brides to find their perfect gowns.

“It brings your friends and family into more of the memory-building aspects of your big day, and gives them something tangible and truly beautiful to take home with them when it’s over.”
-Saffron Harrison

hen throwing weddings, showers, and other memorable life events, there tend to be two types of hosts: those who want guests to arrive to a magical day, and those who want their guests to be part of making the day magical.

For the latter, the recent trend of DIY floral carts has found a welcome home. Owner and designer of Camille’s Florals, Saffron Harrison, says that many of her flower cart clients have found inspiration, and in turn, her business, through Instagram.

“It’s a really unique way to bring your theme and your color palette together in a way that includes and engages your guests,” she said. “It brings your friends and family into more of the memory-building aspects of your big day, and gives them something tangible and truly beautiful to take home with them when it’s over.”

Harrison utilizes a wide selection of blossoms, but always within season to maintain sustainability, and to reflect her client’s carefully chosen color palette.

“When we bring our flower cart to an event, we come fully prepared with our client’s customized selection of flowers, brown wrap and twine, wicker baskets full of greenery, scissors, even a big umbrella to work under if it’s an outdoor event,” she added. “We also supply ‘how-to’ information, and can arrange for a team member to attend the event and walk guests through the process, make suggestions, and assist where needed.”

In addition to becoming a signature piece at weddings, the flower cart has made a big splash at events like baby showers, bridal luncheons, ladies’ teas, brunches, and birthday parties.

Harrison inherited her love of florals and her middle name from her great aunt Camille, for whom her small business with big dreams is named.

“I only met my great aunt as an infant, but she owned a flower shop in Bennington in

the ’80s and ’90s, and I feel really good about continuing her legacy.”

Harrison is continuing that legacy with love for her clients, her art, and the environment she mindfully protects with each bouquet.

“We always do our best to work with in-season, locally-sourced, and sustainably grown and harvested flowers, not just for the flower cart, but for all of our arrangements. I am a huge believer in acting with environmental responsibility, no matter what I’m doing, and I love showing people how to create something unique and beautiful while still being very eco-conscious,” she explained. “It might sometimes take a little extra creativity, but I love that challenge and that’s what I’m really good at. Finding a beautiful, creative solution that’s going to be impactful in a positive way.”

The cart utilizes fresh flowers, and Harrison is happy to customize her clients’ options to reflect the tone and theme of the event she’s serving. Some of her most popular flower cart options include hardy blooms with strong stems, such as mums, carnations, hypericum, gerbera daisies, pompoms, snapdragons, roses, and lush greenery. Every season brings a new variety of options, and Harrison maintains excellent relationships with her suppliers to stay ahead of seasonal demand, keeping her clients well-stocked and their options wide open.

It’s Pronounced

“Char-coo-terie”

Pronounced

“Char-coo-terie”

STORY BY TAMSEN BUTLER DESIGN BY RENEE LUDWICK

The concept of charcuterie is nothing new, though its popularity within the United States has surged within the last few decades. Originally a standard food offering at medieval tables, charcuterie boards are now a staple at modern celebrations and gatherings. Wedding showers, rehearsal dinners, and receptions are all prime instances of when a charcuterie board can satisfy a grazing group of attendees.

Charcuterie boards originally featured preserved meats, but modern charcuterie can be just about anything, said Sandy Albers of Artisan Boards of Omaha. In fact, there are no hard and fast rules about which ingredients belong on a charcuterie board and which don’t. “People think just strictly meat or just strictly cheese and there’s so many different charcuterie boards out there,” she said. “Whether it’s dessert, candy, breakfast, crudité, whatever it is so you’re just not stuck with all meat or cheese.” Albers added that foods on a board should all be finger foods nothing should need cutting or portioning out. But what those foods are is completely up to the person creating the board.

That’s not to say that there aren’t any rules when it comes to charcuterie. There are, in fact, some strict rules surrounding the etiquette of eating that should be followed to ensure a pleasant experience for everyone involved.

Charcuterie etiquette dictates that guests approach the board with a napkin or small plate and simply grab what they want. Since the food on the board should consist only of finger foods, grabbing food from the board by hand is completely appropriate. Albers cautioned that nobody should stand over the board, munching on their selection while perusing the selection for their next bite.

Instead, “get what you want and then move out of the way,” she instructed. “The way I look at it, if you’re standing there eating over a charcuterie board, what’s falling out of your mouth?”

Albers also said that charcuterie boards can be offered at a gathering as the meal. Her guidance is to simply double the amount of food ordered to ensure everyone is satisfied. Otherwise, charcuterie is a fantastic option for wedding gatherings because it gives attendees the opportunity to graze on food while empowering them to make their own selection. Guests who are selecting their bites from charcuterie boards also have the opportunity to socialize with other guests.

There can be something for everyone with charcuterie boards, whether that means having a board to the side that conforms to allergies or dietary requirements for specific guests or having such a wide variety of foods on the boards that everyone finds something they like – and perhaps even something new to try.

Lexi Peck, who frequently utilizes charcuterie boards for her events (in fact, she’s ordered more than a 100 boards from Albers!) said that she has offered traditional charcuterie boards to her guests, but also candy boards and even breakfast boards. Charcuterie boards, said Peck, always make an “instant impression” on guests.

The growing charcuterie board trend is one culinary trend that doesn’t disappoint. It’s a versatile offering that helps create an ambiance of opulence and abundance at any wedding event.
