INTER IN NEBRASKA is frequently

cold and snowy. It’s a perfect time to sit on the couch in slippers, reading books.

That might be a goal for Lisa Benson, first grade teacher at St. Matthew Catholic School in Bellevue, a first-grade teacher with a master’s degree in literacy. Mrs. Benson has taught young children for 20 years, and her work earned the designation of Educator of the Year from the Archdiocese of Omaha. Her story appears on page 18.

The holidays coincide with this winter edition of Family Guide, and like many people, I look forward to seeing special shows. I especially enjoy watching my nephew perform in his high school band concert. In this edition, we have provided you with a list of holiday concerts around the area that are open to the public (on page 20).

Winter is also a time when those in need most need a helping hand. Elizabeth Byrnes, a senior at Ralston High School, knows firsthand that many of those in need are fellow students. Byrnes is the organizer of the R-Pantry, a food pantry within the school that allows students who may not have enough food over the weekend some extra nourishment. Her story is on page 16. From all of us here at Omaha Magazine, enjoy the holidays and keep warm.

Grandparents are a special part of many families. Growing up, my grandparents did not live in the same city as my parents, sister, and me. I retain fond memories of my grandparents’ home in Colorado, and I still enjoy visiting with my other grandmother (who lives in central Iowa). This issue includes an article about parents who have chosen to give their children more exposure to beloved grandparents by moving back to Omaha (on page 6).

ADIE BECKMAN—AT 2 years old—

likes to pick up pretty rocks and cup them in her tiny hands. Then she clicks them together. These are special rocks that her grandmother, Linda Beckman, brought back from past vacations in Colorado and Washington. Whether she’s practicing her sensory motor skills by playing with Grandma’s rocks or taking short walks with her grandpa, Dennis Beckman, Sadie’s too little to understand the favor her parents, Jennie and David Beckman, did for her.

By returning back to their hometown of Omaha after stints in Boston and Baltimore, they widened their daughter’s family circle. A supportive circle that cares for her, plays games with her, and feeds her homemade sugar cookies. Young families are increasingly returning home to Omaha to live closer to grandparents for more quality family bonding. Jennie’s childhood

friend Amy Isaacson also recently returned to the Omaha area after working as a researcher at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California. Isaacson says her family moved due to the rising cost of living in the Silicon Valley area and to reside closer to family. The Isaacsons have a 4-year-old daughter and 9-month-old twin girls.

After the birth of Sadie, Jennie realized how important it was to be around her family. “It was really painful to go a whole year with them not seeing her for large slots of time.”

Beckman, who graduated from the University of Nebraska at Omaha, says they talked about returning to Omaha after they had children. Fortunately, Beckman’s previous job as director of volunteer strategy with the non-profit Association of Jewish Family and Children’s Agencies allowed her to work remotely, so she could take her job with her to Nebraska. She is now the director of community engagement and education for the Jewish Federation of Omaha.

“It’s fun to watch her,” Linda says of baby Sadie. “When she first walks in the house and she sees you, she just lights up, and it’s like ‘Ahh!’ She just melts your heart.”

“This has been absolutely the best decision for so many reasons. We have more space. We have family. People are friendly here. It’s more affordable,” Isaacson says.

When David’s mom, Linda, heard the news, she says she kept thinking, “Oh my gosh, is this real?” “Many, many years before, they had wanted to move back,” Linda says. “It all depends on jobs and things. You can’t just decide to move. You have to have an income.”

The Beckmans also have another granddaughter, Evelyn, who lives in Iowa. “We don’t see her nearly as often, but I’ll send her little packages here and there,” says Linda.

“We just want to be there to be of any assistance that the parents need. My parents were like that. They were always there to pick up the kids after school if I couldn’t do it. They were always there, so it just comes natural,” she says.

The Beckmans take care of Sadie each Tuesday evening. “Dave and Jenny get to have a few minutes by themselves to sort of catch their breath,” Linda says. They get to do things childless people do, like go out to eat without the dining room theatrics or relax on the deck and enjoy each other’s company.”

“I think the biggest thing is just the sense of comfort and security, and feeling like we have backup. And we have backups to our backup,” Jennie says. Jennie’s support team also includes her own parents, Linda and Harry Gates, and her two brothers. The Gates watch Sadie each Wednesday evening, and sometimes on the weekends for an hour or so while Jennie runs errands. They like to read books to Sadie or work on puzzles with her. They have tried painting and crafting with Play-Doh—no small feat with a child that age.

Harry also likes to take Sadie on walks. “We go look at the ants, and we go look at the flowers, and we go look at the birds,” he says.

Linda Gates says she really notices how Sadie changes from week to week. “Her vocabulary has just exploded. It seems like it’s all of a sudden, but because we can see her once a week, we really can see that progression. If they were still in Baltimore, we would miss out on all of that,” she says.

Gates, who prefers the name “Gigi” over “Grandmother,” has a penchant for wearing jewelry. “Sadie’s always real fascinated with that. If I have on bracelets and necklaces, I’ll take them off and put them on her, and she puts them back on me. It’s just kind of a nice moment together,” she says. All the grandparents are happy with the new living arrangements. “It’s great. We’re very grateful and excited that it all worked out for them,” Gates says. FamilyGuide

CONFRONTING STUDENT HUNGER AT THE R-PANTRY

“Once the pantry was created, we handed it off to the students,” says Boster, who also serves as National Honor Society adviser and oversees the pantry project.

Ralston High School, beyond the steel lockers and crowded classrooms, Elizabeth Byrnes is stocking nonperishable goods. While classmates hurry to first period at 7:30 a.m., Byrnes shuffles paperwork, counts inventory, coordinates volunteer shifts, and organizes pick-ups and drop-offs for the school’s food pantry.

Byrnes is not your typical teenager. Sure, she’s a 17-yearold cheerleader who gabs on a smartphone and loves to shop at American Eagle. But this 5-foot-6-inch brown-eyed beauty takes her community service seriously. So when she saw a sign last year advertising the school’s free food pantry, titled the R-Pantry, Byrnes decided to check it out. “I didn’t know it was needed,” she says.

On that particular day, she visited the small closet of a lecture room where teachers had been operating a makeshift pantry that allowed students in need to shop anonymously for food, toiletries, and other supplies inside the high school. Roughly 60 percent of students at Ralston Public Schools receive free or reduced-rate meals.

Byrnes acquired the larder responsibility and has helped it evolve from the small closet of a lecture hall into a spacious supply room with large tower shelves brimming with food as diverse as artichoke hearts, fruit snacks, and granola bars.

Byrnes has grown the one-person operation to having 70 volunteers on deck to assist when needed. She has presented before the Ralston Chamber of Commerce when soliciting for donations and has advocated and made Ralston High an official Food Bank of the Heartland donation site. She describes the families who utilize the pantry as living break-even lifestyles, existing paycheck-to-paycheck, with little left over for simple luxuries such as lip balm or toilet paper. Students from such families experience a lot of stress and anxiety over where their next meal is coming from, she adds. “I saw how education is extremely difficult to get, especially if there’s a need in the household,” Byrnes says. “Students come up to me in the halls and ask when the pantry is going to stock toothbrushes…toothbrushes… What they’re coming in for, it’s not just food they need, but basic items to survive and help their family.” Food insecurity—which means that people lack access to enough food for an active, healthy lifestyle—can be invisible, she explains. “Not knowing if there will be dinner on Friday night or lunch on Saturday.”

The R-Pantry idea is a positive response to a really challenging situation: student hunger. It is not the ultimate solution, but it is a start. “I have so much respect and admiration for these students who are asking for help to support their families,” she says.

Byrnes excels in calculus, biology, and creative writing. She serves on DECA, is a class officer, and participates in National Honors Society. She enjoys running, hiking, and playing with her two dogs—Sophia and Jack. Byrnes credits her family for always influencing her to do what’s best and help those in need. Dad (Robert E. Byrnes) is a doctor. Mom (Mary Byrnes) is a mortgage banker. Brother (Kent Keller) is a police officer.

been in the pantry until she was recognized. When she made homecoming court, we didn’t know about it until people began congratulating us.” Mom adds, “She moves through life as if this is just a job. Helping others is just what she does.”

Byrnes plans to attend a four-year university next year and major in biology. She’d like to someday become a cosmetic dentist or dermatologist.

Byrnes encourages other young people: “If you see something you could change or help out, don’t be afraid to jump in there. Taquitos T HIS RECIPE IS great for a quick and easy dinner for the kids. Each

taquito can also be cut into fourths as an appetizer for those last-minute holiday parties, and the chicken mixture can be spread into bibb lettuce leaves for a healthier option. FamilyGuide

Ingredients

• 1 rotisserie chicken, or 3 cups cooked diced chicken • 3 cups raw spinach • 1 cup of diced, roasted red pepper • 6 ounces of shredded cheese (a blend of jack and cheddar cheeses is recommended) • 8 ounces of cream cheese • Salt and pepper to taste (about one teaspoon each) • 8 large tortillas • Salsa for dipping

Preparation 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. 2. Set aside 1/4 (2 ounces) of the cheese. 3. Pull all the meat off of the chicken,

then chop it to bite-sized pieces, or use diced chicken. Place in a large bowl. 4. Chop the spinach to bite-sized pieces. 5. In a large pan, cook the spinach on medium heat until it has released most of it moisture. Pour into the bowl with the chicken. 6. Combine the pepper, cheese, and cream cheese with the chicken and spinach. Stir until it is mixed thoroughly. 7. Season and taste. Season again if needed. 8. Put two large tablespoons of the mixture on a tortilla. Spread it around, leaving 1 inch on all sides. 9. Roll the tortilla from one end to the other. Be careful not to roll it so tightly that the sides pop. 10. Place the roll in a foil-lined 9-by-13-inch pan. 11. Repeat steps 7-9 until you have used all the tortillas and taquito mixture. 12. Make sure there is 1/2 an inch of space between each roll. 13. Cook 10 minutes, or, for an extra-cheesy dinner option, cook eight minutes, add the reserved 2 ounces of cheese, and cook for another two minutes. 14. 1. Cut felt fabric to 1 yard x 1 yard 2. Fold felt fabric in half, twice, to form a smaller square.

3. Fold corner-to-corner to form a triangle shape.

thought of spending the holidays with a little one was something I could barely wrap my mind around. Now, I can't imagine my life without our tiny girl. This first year has been a joy, and it has meant so much to make Rosie a personalized mobile, headbands, teethers, etc. With cold weather just around the corner, a cozy poncho was in order. Turns out most vendors don't make winter coats for 9-month-olds, and ponchos are a lot easer to just throw over a carseat anyway. Plus, I'm pretty obsessed with how cool she looks in it. FamilyGuide

slight circular curve through all layers of the fabric. 5. Unfold into a near-perfect circle. Lay on top of the linen fabric, and cut out the same shape. 6. Measure the size of your child's head and cut out a circle that size in the center of the felt fabric. 7. Cut out a slightly larger circle out of the center of the linen fabric. 8. Hem the linen fabric about 2 or 3 inches in from the large circle, and about 1/4 inch from the small circle. 9. Lay the linen fabric centered over the felt fabric, and using a sewing machine, sew the two pieces of fabric together. 10. Cut into the visible felt fabric about 2-3 inces, all the way around, to create a fringe.

AURA KIRSHENBAUM IS a straight-A student,

but it is not good grades that her mother talks about first when describing her daughter’s scholarly accomplishments.

“It’s comments that teachers make. It’s wonderful hearing about how she treats others and how she is respectful to teachers. They say that she’s an active listener in class, that she’s kind and courteous. That’s what I’m proud about,” Jennifer Tompkins Kirshenbaum says. “You may have it in your DNA that these things are easier than for other people, or you learn at a faster pace. That may be a gift with you, but what do you do with it? Some people may have an ego with it, but Laura doesn’t. She’s grateful for what she has and is highly motivated.” Kirshenbaum, an eighth-grader at Alice Buffett Magnet Middle School in the Omaha Public School District, admits to being a fast learner but says her excellent grades in her honors classes don’t come effortlessly. “I work hard for that,” she says. And she definitely prefers some subjects over others. “My top subject would definitely be math,” she says. “But I love science, too: chemistry, physics, and astronomy.”

Kirshenbaum has no shortcuts to academic success to share, she says. Being a good student means being diligent: finishing the assignments, completing the reading, following directions. It also helps to have good organizational skills that ensure she’s always prepared. “I turn homework in on time and I try to stay on top of things,” she explains. “I’m proud of that.”

She even enjoys learning outside of the classroom, watching informational YouTube channels in her spare time, and competing in multiple academic events like Quiz Bowl, Science Bowl, Math Counts, Academic Pentathlon, and Book Blasters. She has an artistic side, too, that brings some balance to student life—Kirshenbaum is active in dance (ballet, modern, and jazz) and plays the violin, even performing in the orchestra pit for Omaha Public Schools’ summer musical Peter Pan in 2016. “I also do a lot of acting,” she adds. “I’ve been in a lot of the school plays, and I’ve done some community theater as well.”

She’s even managed to make time for volleyball and local volunteering at a food bank and a homeless shelter. Two summers ago, she was a classroom helper at Jackson Elementary School. Because she’s an honors student, she is also eligible to tutor fellow students. “I like being able to help others,” she says. Kirshenbaum says her future plans absolutely include college, which her mother and father (Matt Kirshenbaum) like to hear. It may be a little early to start choosing a particular institution, but judging by the scholarly aptitude she’s demonstrated so far, it’s clear that she’s going to be able to take her pick of schools—and programs of study—upon graduation four years from now. “I see myself becoming a chemist,” she says. “Or a college professor in math or science.” FamilyGuide

At the Hear St. Matthew A S A YOUNG Girl Scout in Texas, a lightbulb

went off when Lisa Benson’s troop adopted a special needs class during her middle school years. She knew exactly what she wanted to be when she grew up. That connection to those students made her realize that her future place in life was in a classroom. She held on to that joy of helping others when she attended Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas, and majored in elementary education. She dedicated her education further by continuing on for her master’s degree in literacy from the University of Nebraska at Omaha.

Now, at 58 years old and with over 20 years of teaching experience, Lisa Benson was recently honored as one of the Educators of the Year in the elementary category by the Archdiocese of Omaha at the Archbishop’s Dinner for Education on Sept. 29, 2016.

Nominated by the principal, staff, and community of St. Matthew Catholic School, where she has taught first grade for the past 14 years, Benson was just as shocked as she was thrilled to receive the award: “I was so surprised. I feel I have always given my best to St. Matthew School, my students, and their families. It is such an honor to be recognized for hard work and dedication. I truly appreciate all the support from the archdiocese, my fellow teachers, and the families at St. Matthew.” It’s that heart and dedication that is exactly why she was nominated, according to school principal Jim Daro, who has worked with her during the four years he’s been at St. Matthew. “Mrs. Benson is an outstanding teacher,” Daro says. “She cares deeply for her students and their progress in and out of her classroom. As a mother of three grown children, Benson loves cultivating independence in not only her own children but those she teaches every day in the first grade classroom. “At this age, they love learning,” she says. “So all I have to do is present it to them, and they soak it up. When I see a student no longer having to struggle to read or do a math problem—that is why I teach. They take so much pride in themselves when they become independent in their thinking.” But teaching hasn’t always come easy to Benson. She didn’t start her teaching career until after raising her children. At the start of working at St. Matthew, she felt behind in the field of education. “Things had changed since I graduated from college. This struggle has made me aware of how my students, or even a new staff member, may feel when a concept isn’t clear to them.” That empathy is what led her to become like a support system to many other teachers at the school. Daro raves about Benson’s ability to help others, “She is a mentor and a leader with the rest of the faculty. She is highly involved in our school and community beyond the classroom. Mrs. Benson is involved with our school board, our development team, and our school improvement team.” As for what Benson will do with the $5,000 award prize from her prestigious Educator of the Year recognition: “My husband and I are still figuring that out. Maybe a trip!”

Youth from area dance companies have their moment on stage in several metro productions. Omaha Ballet’s The Nutcracker has a cast that extends beyond professionals to include more than 90 student dancers. Ever After Productions’ Nutcracker Delights includes a cast of both semi-professional and students from nearly a dozen local dance schools.

Children take part in theatrical performances as well. Many will be in the ensembles for Omaha Community Playhouse’s 42nd annual production of A Christmas Carol and The Rose’s Prancer.
