Cox Communications COMMITTED TO CHILDREN IN OUR COMMUNITY
T
ECHNOLOGY IS A way of life for
today’s kids. They use it every day, and few companies understand that better than Cox Communications. With a focus on youth, education, and technology, Cox is at the forefront of efforts to help educate and equip our kids for the fast-paced world of information and innovation that surrounds us.
INNOVATION IN EDUCATION GRANTS
It’s no secret that school budgets are tight and many innovative educational programs and projects are never executed due to a lack of funding. Through Cox Charities, a program that is completely funded and directed by nearly 1,000 local Cox employees, the company provides Innovation in Education grants of up to $2,500 each to area schools to fund classroom programs and curriculum. Programs selected for funding encourage and promote students’ ingenuity and imagination through the innovative use of technology. Local teachers and principals are encouraged to submit applications at coxcharitiesnebraska-iowa.com during the annual submission period. Last year alone, Cox employees contributed nearly $25,000 to fund the Innovation in Education grant program in our community.
“We know teachers today must look for alternate resources to implement new, or continue existing, programs,” says Kim Rowell, vice president and Cox Omaha Market Leader. “We are committed to supporting innovative
classroom initiatives, and we applaud teachers and schools for bringing these exciting ideas to life. We look forward to the difference they will make in our students’ education.”
CONNECT 2COMPETE
In the United States, more than 80 percent of all teachers believe that online learning improves education. While many consider an online connection at home to be an absolute necessity, it’s alarming that one-third of all students in America, mostly from low-income households, do not have access to computers or high speed Internet in their home settings.
That is why Cox partners with the Connect2Compete program, a national broadband adoption initiative, to offer discounted Internet service to families with children who qualify for the National Free School Lunch Program. The service is provided at a fixed rate of $9.95 per month and includes free cable modem rental and installation. Since launching the program in April of 2013, Cox has actively promoted the Connect2Compete program by partnering with local school districts and organizations like the Urban League and Boys & Girls Clubs to connect students with this valuable resource. To date, nearly 15,000 families across the country, including hundreds here in the Omaha area, have enrolled in the program. Over the next two years, Cox has pledged more than $15 million nationally in support

of the Connect2Compete program. For more information, log on to connect2compete.org/ Cox or call 1-855-222-3252.
KIDS ZONE
Today’s parents often struggle with television programming. They want to ensure that the shows that their children watch are appropriate in content, which can sometimes be challenging. Cox Communications recently introduced New Contour, a personalized TV experience that offers the ability to interface with video content through features like smart search and voice commands.
One of the most innovative features of the New Contour platform is the Kids Zone, which offers enhanced parental controls and information

for children. The Kids Zone provides a walled garden, which is a browsing environment that allows parents to control the information that their children can access. This feature permits children to browse and play parent-approved video content on their television or other devices. Another feature helps parents to select appropriate content according to age and interest and there are endless selections of children’s movies available at no charge. Visit contour. com for more information on Cox’s Kid Zone. “Connecting youth to technology is a core value at Cox,” says Rowell. “We look forward to continuing that tradition for generations to come.” FamilyGuide

ITHIN ONE YEAR of establishing The Union of
Contemporary Art in 2011, its founder and executive director, Brigitte McQueen Shew, noticed neighborhood kids arriving unexpectedly at the arts facility on North 24th Street.
The Union for Contemporary Arts
The Union didn’t have formal weekend classes at the time. But the kids didn’t mind. They would show up, knock on the door, and ask: “Can we come in to make stuff?”
McQueen Shew was happy to accommodate. “We just started letting them come in and do whatever they wanted,” she says.
The informal weekend sessions grew into the weekly “Art Club” in 2013, and the program continues to grow. Now, on any given Saturday, there are local artists helping out, teaching lessons, and serving as mentors. “It really started organically, and the majority of the kids involved in the program still walk to the building,” McQueen Shew says of the free program for youths who are between the ages of 6 and 13, living in North Omaha. Art Club takes place every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
The focus of each Art Club session depends on the artist(s) leading the group. McQueen Shew says they try to have a ceramic artist instructor available, “because the kids love working with clay.” Sometimes the artistic medium is painting or printmaking, and they have also done yoga with the kids. Meanwhile, urban agriculture is an important aspect of Art Club every week. “We’re located in one of the largest food deserts in the state of Nebraska,” she says, referring to North Omaha’s dearth of affordable, fresh, and healthy food. “We have a garden that basically belongs to the community, but the kids are responsible for it. They help us plant, maintain it, and during the summer when they cook lunches for each other, a lot of the produce come from the garden.” >

FEATURE CONT'D
Art and North Omaha Within the past year, McQueen Shew has been trying to connect Art Club lessons with African-American art history. Her focus emerged from a guest lecture she gave at Sacred Heart School in North Omaha. “I started the presentation by asking, ‘Who likes art?’” McQueen Shew says. “Everyone raised their hands. Then, I asked if anyone could name a famous artist, and I got lots of 'Picassos.' And then, I asked them they could name a famous African-American artist, and it was like crickets.”
During the next half hour of her presentation, she showed a steady stream of African-American artwork on the projector. At the end of her talk, she asked again, “How many of you can name an African-American artist?” All hands went up. Students were excited to learn about the important cultural and artistic contributions made by African-Americans. McQueen Shew says making the connection is important.
“It’s not really a conversation that we have in North Omaha,” she says. “Most after school programs focus on sports, which is why we really want to do this. There’s just no cultural outlet for kids living in the community.
“IT REALLY STARTED ORGANICALLY, AND THE MAJORITY OF THE KIDS INVOLVED IN THE PROGRAM STILL WALK TO THE BUILDING.” -Brigitte McQueen Shew

So, we work around a lot of art history ideas because I think it’s really important for the children and their families to connect themselves to the conversations.”
Art Club, and the rest of The Union’s youth outreach programming, strives to achieve The Union’s ultimate goal: to “unite artists and the community to inspire positive social change.” The youth outreach programs build on The Union’s other efforts to provide studio space and facilitate exhibitions for contemporary artists in Omaha.
Youth Outreach
The Union has gradually expanded its youth outreach over the past few years. Youth programs are free; however, most are directed at serving North Omaha residents living east of 72nd St., west of the Missouri River, south of Interstate 680, and north of Cuming Street or Northwest Radial Highway. Over the summer, activities included a new family program on Thursday nights, various art workshops, and a summer camps for kids. The family night program could become a regular feature at The Union in the future. For the past two years, The Union has offered “Teen Art Night” every Friday. Teen Art Night began as a
collaboration with Catholic Charities for at-risk youth. The teen night is now geared towards all teens—ages 13 through 19—offering open access to The Union’s studio space, darkroom, print shop, ceramic studio, paints, drawing materials, and assorted art supplies every Friday from 5-8 p.m.
“We decided to open it up and let other teens come in, so that’s not open just for North Omaha, but also to everyone from the greater Omaha area,” McQueen Shew says. The summer family night was also open to residents of the larger metropolitan area.
Changes are on the horizon for The Union. The non-profit space will relocate to the nearby Blue Lion building in the fall. The larger space will allow The Union to accommodate even more youths, instructors, and families. In January, The Union is planning to launch a new afterschool arts program for North Omaha youth called “Union After School.” They are currently accepting participant registration for the program.
“We are also adding an element to the programs that we do with the kids when we move to the new building, and that’s theater,” McQueen Shew says, noting the hiring of Denis Chapman from Omaha Community Playhouse.
“We’ll have a youth theater ensemble that will perform productions throughout the year.”
Want to learn more about The Union?
The Union’s move into the renovated Blue Lion building corresponds with a growing number of community developments in the vicinity of North 24th and 30th streets. McQueen Shew is excited to play her part in the area’s revitalization. “There is so much happening in the community right now,” she says. “It’s a pretty amazing time.” FamilyGuide Visit u-ca.org/youth-outreach for more information.
To register a child for classes, or to volunteer to lead a workshop, contact Youth Engagement Coordinator Teal Gardner at teal@u-ca.org or 402-933-3161. The Union also accepts donations of art supplies.

EMA JOHANNING’S SECOND CHANCE

young hero
“CANCER IS LIKE TAKING THE MOST LIKABLE PART OF YOURSELF AND HAVING TO SAY GOODBYE TO IT BECAUSE IT’S KILLING YOU.” -Ema Johanning
A
SMALL SIGH OF hopelessness
escaped Ema Johanning’s lips as she looked up at the daunting steps of Bellevue West High School. Pain radiated down her left leg. It felt like someone had driven a screwdriver in the socket where it met her pelvic bone, twisting and twisting with each step. Don’t worry about it, Ema’s doctors said. It’s just growing pains, an overemotional teenager trying to get attention, or just all in her head.
Ema could not escape the savage nightmarish monster that haunted her. Exhausted, dehydrated, and malnourished, Ema soon lost nearly 30 pounds. She threw up almost daily—all because of her agonizing leg. Nikki Johanning, her mother and a former CNA, knew something was not right. Pills, fluids, and six visits to the ER did nothing to diminish the pain.
“Can you please admit my daughter. I can’t physically take care of her anymore,” Johanning tearfully begged doctors at yet another ER visit at Children’s Hospital. Ema could no longer walk and used a wheelchair just to get
from the couch to the bathroom. In addition, Johanning had Ema’s three siblings to take care of at home, an exhausted husband who would sometimes have to stay up at night with Ema only to work the next day, and no family in the area to help out.
“I never took ‘no’ for an answer,” Johanning recalls. “If we sat back and waited, I don’t know if Ema would be here.” Ema was admitted for pain control and underwent further tests.
Ema woke up groggy from medication. She heard her mother sobbing as she held Ema’s hand. It was one of the few times Ema had ever seen her cry. “What’s wrong? Mom, tell me.”
Cancer. Ewing’s scarocoma. Malignant. Ema felt like she had the wind knocked out of her. She barely heard her mother. The blinds were drawn tight. Even the smallest sliver of sunshine hurt, but there in the darkness of the room, Ema felt a hazy sense of relief rush through her. omahamagazine.com

13
“At least it’s not in my head,” she said as she hugged her mom. “We are going to beat this, and I’m going to be fine.” Ewing’s sarcoma is a type of rare bone cancer that affects children or young adults like Ema and can be difficult to diagnose. It typically begins in the legs and hips, but can develop in other areas.
“It was my 16th birthday present,” Ema says now with a small, sad smile. Ema cancelled her sweet 16 birthday bash scheduled for later that week.
According to St. Jude’s Research Hospital, there is only a 56 percent survival rate for those aged 15 to 19. So while most of her friends were worried about homework, boys, or parties, Ema would have an IV attached to her arm full of chemotherapy.
It was an aggressive plan to attack the cancer hard and fast: three days of the “red devil” through a circular port in the hospital, and then two weeks at home depending on blood counts. If her counts rebounded, she would have another five days of treatment. This lasted a year from February until the end of May. >
YOUNG HERO CONT'D
< Ema would need a partial hip replacement and undergo physical therapy as well in June.
Johanning placed throw up buckets around the house. Her vomit was so hazardous that even a single splash burned her mother’s foot. Even Ema’s tough military father became squeamish. But it really hit home when Ema lost her hair. “The magic went away,” her mother says.
As Ema watched her locks of dark hair fall, so did her innocence. The reality seemed to weigh heavily on her teenage shoulders. She could no longer blend in with the crowd and lost her identity. All her future aspirations seemed to waver in the harsh light of her newly shaved head. “The hardest part for me and her dad is you teach them to be the best people they can be, then watch that poison drip down into your child,” Johanning says. Her mother could not throw on a Band-Aid or kiss away the pain. “I’d be lost without mom. She was my rock…my best friend,” Ema says.
“I rocked that dress,” Ema says laughing. It was, of course, purple. Ema believes this is her “soul color,” universal for cancer survivors.
WHEN SHE WALKED DOWN THE AISLE, EMA UNZIPPED HER GRADUATE GOWN TO PROUDLY DISPLAY THE TANK TOP UNDERNEATH EMBLAZONED PROUDLY WITH “SUCK IT CANCER.”
In the oncology wing at Children’s Hospital, Ema gained strength from Nurse Anisa Hoie. “Don’t you feel like you belong here with a bunch of baldies all in one room?” Hoie asked her. Ema started laughing, the first time in her long cancerous journey.
She saw little kids playing games and suddenly realized she shouldn’t be feeling sorry for herself. “Who am I to say my life isn’t worth fighting for,” Ema vents.
That teenage invulnerability though, that feeling of being untouchable by death, was gone.
“Cancer is like taking the most likable part of yourself and having to say good-bye to it because it’s killing you,” Ema says. She attended her junior prom with just a smattering of brown hair with a flower tucked behind her ear, smiling in one picture with her two friends.
Ewing Sarcoma Approximately 200 children and young adults are diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma each year in the United States. Although rare, Ewing sarcoma is the second most common type of bone cancer among children and young adults. According to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, roughly half of all Ewing sarcoma tumors “occur in children and young adults between ages 10 and 20.”
Now in remission, she finally feels free. The 20-year-old Ema shows off a tattoo on her shoulder: a heart with an owl and the cancer ribbon inside and “Forever Strong” etched on the outside. Her mother, grandmother, and other family members tatted up with “Believe” in support. Her black hair has grown back—thicker and curlier than before. A puckered long scar travels up her left thigh. Ema was self-conscious of it at first, but now takes pride in the reminder. She is alive.
“A friend said to me, ‘The only one happier to see it than you and your mom is me,’” Ema says in a voice thick with tears.
Ema missed most of her sophomore and junior years of high school, yet she continued doing her coursework from home, despite short term memory issues and other side effects that still plague her. Ema graduated in May 2015. When she walked down the aisle Ema unzipped her graduate gown to proudly display the tank top underneath emblazoned proudly with “Suck it Cancer.” “Everyone thought I flashed,” Ema says giggling at the memory. “My friends said, ‘you didn’t do what I think you did, did you?’”
College for Ema meant not only worrying about classes, but how to negotiate the small pharmacy (22 medications) she took with her to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in the fall. “We didn’t know if she would live or die, and now she is going to college—it’s amazing,” Johanning says.
Ema is hoping to sky-dive with her father at the five-year mark. According to the American Cancer Society, the fiveyear survival rate is 70 percent for a tumor that has not spread, but only 15 to 30 percent if it has metastasized. In the meantime, it is the little things in life Ema appreciates the most.
“I look at me still being here as a second chance at life,” Ema says. FamilyGuide

and strings are simple and beautiful with textures that are perfect for sore little gums. The wooden beads connect easily to any pacifier and shirt for easy access while you are running around. The fabric ears on the rings have a soft texture to chew on, and also mop up the drool that would otherwise be on your little one's shirt or yours. Both of these items are also useful in teaching motor skills such as grasping and reaching, and are very simple to make. FamilyGuide

Wooden teething rings 1/4 yd. cotton fabric Needle and thread Scissors
Directions: Supplies:
1. Cut two strips of 14” x 3”
pieces of fabric. 2. Place the wrong sides of the fabric together. If you would like something other than a square edge (these are pointed), cut your shape into both pieces as they are pressed against one another. 3. Start your stitch in the middle of one of the long sides of the fabric. Stitch all the way around and leave a one-inch opening in the middle so that you can turn your fabric right side out and whip-stitch the opening shut. 4. After the piece is sewn, fold it in half and slip the middle through the ring. Then take the two “bunny ears,” fold them around the ring, and pull tight through the center loop of the fabric.

THAREIN POTUHERA EAGLE SCOUT, AUTHOR, SPELLING BEE CHAMP
J
ACOPEVER. THE EXOTIC fish with bulging eyes
and reddish color sank Tharein Potuhera’s hopes at the 2016 Scripps National Spelling Bee. But the 14-year-old Potuhera did not let the obscure misspelling dissuade his academic and literary ambitions. “When I was at the bee, I really wanted to make Omaha and Nebraska proud. I still do, actually,” he says.
The local prodigy advanced from the St. Wenceslaus School spelling bee, to the Archdiocese bee, to his second appearance at regionals, then onward to the national contest in National Harbor, Maryland. He joined 285 elite spellers, culled from the countless nationwide contests last spring. Potuhera was among the 45 finalists who made it to the finals of the National Spelling Bee, broadcast live on ESPN. Upon correctly spelling “propinquity,” the Omaha teen made national headlines with his dab, (a bow with one arm bent, one arm outstretched) imitating NFL quarterback Cam Newton’s popular touchdown celebration.
After missing Jacopever—the slippery lettered fish of Dutch/Afrikaans origin—Potuhera and his family made a circuitous journey back home to Omaha. “On the way back, we went to Princeton, Yale, Cornell, and also did a tour at Harvard,” says his father, Asthika Potuhera. “After the Harvard tour was done, the director of admissions came and sat down with Tharein away from everyone else and had a chat for about an hour and a half. We were in awe.” The Harvard administrator was impressed by the young Potuhera’s resume. After all, the Omaha teen published his first book at the age of 12.
His book, Tome Riders: Mr. Custo’s Book, is a historical novel with heavy doses of time travel. Potuhera says he wants to challenge kids to learn history, and improve
their vocabularies, while encouraging reading as a leisure pastime.
The family’s homeward trip provided an opportunity for sightseeing at important American history sites that Potuhera mentioned in Tome Riders (but had never himself visited). With attention freed from spelling bee preparation, Potuhera dove headlong into writing his next book. “It’s going pretty well; it’s almost done,” Potuhera says. “Both books have the same message to readers, but the second is more concerned with teachers than kids. It’s hard to say if the second book is a prequel or the sequel (because of all the time travel). It’s the teacher as a kid, so technically it’s a prequel.”
The trip home from the National Spelling Bee also featured a stop in Connecticut. Asthika and his wife, Durga, migrated to the U.S. from Sri Lanka in 1998 to study at Eastern Connecticut State University. They came to Omaha seeking a better life. Tharein and his younger brother have always lived here. Potuhera enjoys the camaraderie of new friends gained from spelling bees. He also maintains social media correspondence with fellow spelling phenoms selected by Kindle for a promotional advertisement last spring.
His experience befriending other top students nationwide has inspired him to foster academic camaraderie among Omaha’s gifted students. In fact, he began working on such a project to obtain his Eagle Scout badge. “I want to make a club for people who are gifted, and then help them get even better, to help them realize what they want to do, whether it’s a spelling bee, geography bee, or something else,” he says. A
NDREW EASTON TAUGHT students how to
create projects from wood. His son, Andrew W. Easton, taught students how to properly create a balance sheet and how to use their left pinkie fingers to type the letter “q.” Andrew D. Easton, the third teacher in line to carry the family name, had no problem choosing a career.
“My dad and grandfather were inspirations to me,” he says. “Just seeing them being willing to serve other people, and being there for students and to help them with their pursuits.” The current pedagogue answering to the name Mr. Easton educates young minds in ways vastly different from his forefathers.
While teaching English at Gardner Edgerton High School in Gardner, Kansas, he realized his pupils needed stimulation and motivation. He began teaching from the school library, where they processed essays on computers or read books from the comfort of couches. Easton walked around the room and answered questions.
“About three weeks in, some kids were done,” Easton says. “I asked those kids to get together and discuss the book (Frank McCourt’s Angela’s Ashes). We had a competition in front of the principal. It made for a better use of their time.” Those students who had not finished reading the book continued reading.
“That type of learning is called a flex model,” Easton says. “I didn’t know it at the time. I appreciated that we could get a lot of personal attention and one-on-one feedback.”
A Digital Innovator In June, PBS LearningMedia named Easton one of 52 Lead Digital Innovators. The program recognizes tech-savvy K-12 educators serving as leaders in education technology and incorporating digital media in their classrooms.

Four years ago, Easton and his wife moved to Omaha. Andrew found a job with Westside High School and expanded on his flex model. He arranged the classroom furniture to assemble different areas for group study or individual study, and created a goal sheet for his students. Then he experimented with videos to give students another choice of instruction.
Easton became like a high school student again, in order to create better videos. “Matt Rasgorshek (a fellow Westside teacher) said he’d be happy to have me in his intro to video class,” Easton says. In order to learn, he forsook lunch for lectures, sitting alongside some of his English students.
“He wanted to know everything about video production,” says Rasgorshek, Westside’s former broadcast adviser now teaching at Creighton Prep. “Whenever he had an open period he would come in, take notes, ask questions. He’d come into my office and bounce ideas off of me.” Easton had discovered a new passion, and by the end of the year, he made 40 videos to work into his teachings. Some students desire a traditional learning format, however. When a student asked if he would lecture to her, Easton began lecturing to a small group while the others worked individually. “The kids, he instantly hooked them,” says Rasgorshek. “All of them were engaged all the time. It was pretty cool to watch. Even in my classroom, the kids took to him.” FamilyGuide

HE ARCHDIOCESE OF Omaha is home
to 70 Catholic schools and more than 19,000 students. Enrollment has been on the rise over the past year as families respond to a learning environment that focuses on strong academics as well as faith, discipline, community, and high expectations. Our 17 high schools are proud of record ACT scores, the fact that 96 percent of graduates attend post-secondary institutions, and last year’s graduating classes earned more than $99 million in college scholarships. Our 53 elementary and middle schools implement a robust and rigorous curriculum that meets the needs of a great variety of learners. All schools achieve this success while attending to the hearts and souls of our students. As the 2016-2017 school year approaches, many of the 70 schools have completed technology infrastructure upgrades within the buildings, allowing schools to fully employ educational technology into the learning environment. New STEM labs, building enhancements, added personnel, expanded child care and pre-school programs, and other projects can be found across our schools due in large part to the success of a $52 million dollar capital campaign in the Archdiocese.
In the year to come, we expect to continue our patterns of enrollment growth, ever increasing academic achievement, and improved building enhancements. The Archdiocesan school system provides a caring, Christ-centered community for every student that walks through our doors.

AM HONORED TO be the new
Superintendent and excited to lead the Bellevue Public Schools’ team, who are passionate about education, in the 20162017 school year. Every decision we make will begin with the question, “What is best for our students?” As a member of the Bellevue Public Schools team for the past 20 years, I have a vested interest in providing a quality educational environment in collaboration with the board of education for all students, staff and families in the Bellevue/Offutt community.
One of my greatest beliefs is that all students can learn given an educational environment that is excellent. An environment that is inspiring, positive, and enriching makes school engaging. When students look forward to attending school, they will learn.
Our accomplishments in BPS are many and they take teamwork, communication, leadership, a strong curriculum, accountability, efficiency and a dynamic group of people who always put students first. While the Bellevue/Offutt community is the third largest city in Nebraska, it is a community with small town charm, grace and pride. If you are new to our community, you’ll learn what those who have lived here a life-time know: Bellevue is a great place to call home!

HIS YEAR WILL be yet another one
to celebrate in the Elkhorn Public School District. The District will open Arbor View Elementary, the seventh new Elkhorn school to open since 2010.
Last fall, a record 7,815 students in grades K-12 brought enrollment up by more than 6.5 percent from the prior year and made 2015 the 29th consecutive year of district growth. As the result of a $63.1 million bond issue in 2014, several projects will wrap up this fall. At Elkhorn South High School, a classroom addition will allow the school to accommodate 500 additional students. A major remodel at Elkhorn Middle School includes the addition of an auxiliary gymnasium and fitness center, remodeled restrooms, and a complete safety and security remodel to the front entrance. As Elkhorn continues to be a popular destination for families and commercial development, the administration and board of education continue to focus on long-term planning. We know Elkhorn will be a district of three high schools in the next decade and this year we will continue to search for a suitable site for our third high school.
Our schools serve children and employ staff members who I truly believe are second to none. Our students continue to make me proud to say Elkhorn is where I work and live.

T’S AN EXCITING time to be a student
in Millard Public Schools! We are proud to have the distinction of being named to the College Board’s Sixth Annual AP District Honor Roll. All three of our high schools have been named to the Washington Post’s list of “America’s Most Challenging High Schools.”
Millard is truly a district of choice. Families have options ranging from our accredited Montessori Program, serving preschool through eighth grade; the Core Knowledge Program-School of Distinction, serving kindergarten through fifth grade; and the authorized International Baccalaureate Programme, serving kindergarten through 12th grade. Millard encourages high school students to challenge themselves with Advanced Placement courses as early as their freshman year. We offer 27 different courses, and most of those are available for dual credit. Many students will get a substantial start on college through Millard South’s Early College, which offers students the opportunity to graduate from high school with an Associate of Arts. This coming year Millard South welcomes Air Force Junior ROTC. Thanks to the generosity of our Millard Public Schools Foundation, we have five iPads in every elementary classroom and two iPad carts for every elementary school. This is also the year our digital learning initiative starts rolling out devices for one-to-one access for our secondary students.

HERE IS A lot to celebrate at Omaha
Public Schools. In November 2014, taxpayers passed a bond for construction work to bring our school buildings up-to-date for our staff, our 52,000 plus students, and the community.
As of June 2016, we have 72 active projects for the 2014 Bond Program, including fire alarm system replacements and sprinkler system installations, key card access system installation, safety upgrades and improved learning environment renovation updates. Projects currently active represent 87 percent of the total projects slated for improvements. Our bond construction work continues to track on budget and on schedule. Staff and students continue to accumulate awards in athletics, fine arts, and, most importantly, academic achievement.
We are seeing widespread enrollment increases and adding exciting new programs, including a career academy. A wave of new technology is propelling us forward in areas such as productivity and collaboration.
Our goal is to build on all that momentum. We have a great responsibility and opportunity as we continue to demonstrate excellence in all we do at OPS, including maintaining budgetary discipline while we work to make a positive difference for our students. We believe we are a model urban school district; we know we are setting an example for others as we move ahead.

OMMUNITY PRIDE, OPPORTUNITIES
for everyone, outstanding teachers, and high academic standards are just a few of the highlights that set Papillion-La Vista Community Schools (PLCS) apart. PLCS has all the conveniences of a metropolitan area offered with a small town feel. Currently the fourth largest school district in the state of Nebraska, PLCS offers a personal learning environment for all students. PLCS offers a strong academic curriculum that is planned by our own teachers. Our focus is on continuous improvement, so every student and staff member can grow to their fullest potential. I would say the staff at PLCS is second to none. It is their commitment and dedication to the everyday success of our students that makes PLCS known for greatness. The truly unique part of PLCS is the community we serve. Incorporating the entire cities of Papillion and La Vista, and a portion of the city of Bellevue, our large school district feels like a small town where the entire community rallies to support the educational opportunities offered. Community patrons are known for attending Friday night football games, or watching a high school musical. Parental support and involvement are second to none. PLCS will not be ignored, we will be known… Be known for greatness!

ALSTON PUBLIC SCHOOLS is
excited to welcome the start of the 2016-17 school year. Last year, our enrollment was up almost five percent, and close to 30 percent of those students chose to come to Ralston from outside of the district. We believe this is a direct reflection of the work and progress we have put into our programs, curriculum, technology, and, most importantly, the opportunities for our students. That success is evident in the 227 seniors who graduated in May. Our seniors were awarded more than $6 million in scholarships and will attend 30 different colleges and universities in 11 states this fall.
Our dedicated staff worked throughout the summer to prepare for another terrific school year, including going on home visits to establish positive relationships between students, families, and Ralston Public Schools staff. The visits provide an opportunity for families to meet RPS staff members and let teachers get to know the students prior to the start of a new school year.
As the new school year approaches, we will continue our focus on achievement, character, and technology. We will continue to put our students first and provide as many opportunities as possible to foster pride, hope, and the skills necessary for a successful tomorrow.

ESTSIDE COMMUNITY SCHOOLS
began its summer with a twoday workshop for our teachers, showing them how to share enrichment and personalized learning opportunities with all of their students. The workshop was led by Dr. Joseph Renzulli of the University of Connecticut. Most of our schools offer some type of personalized learning for our students. This institute will help Westside teachers further incorporate literacy, technology, and personalization into their work with students. We are also proud to report that the AdvancED Accreditation Commission granted Westside Community Schools accreditation in May. The external AdvancED team told us that we achieved the highest score since this measurement was instituted. This summer, six elementary schools received safety, security, and infrastructure upgrades. This fall, Oakdale students will move into a “swing school” at the former Community Conference Center. The newly rebuilt Oakdale will open in 2018. Sunset Hills is slated for a new building. Work is under way at Westside Middle School to renovate 75,000 square feet of existing space and add 20,000 square feet. Swanson Elementary will be replaced and Prairie Lane Elementary extensively renovated. We look forward to the coming school year and continuing our mission of preparing our students to become productive citizens of our community and our world.
