aybe you remember our first Best of Omaha™ contest nearly a quarter

century ago. Or not. Honestly, although we thought it was pretty special, Omaha didn’t get too hot and bothered by it, perhaps because our initial approach used editor’s picks before we graduated to the now familiar and more democratic popular vote format. How things have changed! In its 23rd year, Omaha Magazine’s Best of Omaha contest drew more than 30,000 people to vote in 261 categories—the most categories ever—with the most completed ballots in the history of the contest. The Best of Omaha yellow circle is now ubiquitous in the windows of this city’s favorite businesses—and the center of the concept for this issue. On Oct. 11, we held the first-ever Best of Omaha Festival at the Ralston Arena, an event that showcased 60 Best of Omaha winners. More than 3,500 people jammed the arena to peruse and sample the best this city has to offer. Yes. We’ll be hosting that amazing event next year. And now, for the first time ever, we’ve created an edition of Omaha Magazine exclusively for Best of Omaha results. Simply: the Best of Omaha has gotten too big to fit into one of our regular issues. We’d like to thank KETV 7 and Ralston Arena for their support in making this contest the behemoth it is today. And last but certainly not least: We like to congratulate each and every business that received votes. We hope that you, our readers, continue supporting your treasured Omaha businesses and personally congratulate them on their Best of Omaha recognition. Considering the incredible amount of community support it now takes for a business to be recognized in this contest, they certainly deserve a pat on the back. about the cover of this, the first-ever Best of Omaha standalone results issue? We sure hope you did. This year we went to the Omaha experts in cutting and engraving with lasers—MTRL Design—to create the cover image. That’s right, the cover was made with lasers. The design was etched and then cut into a piece of birch plywood. With a little help from photoshop, the yellow circle came... well, full circle to complete the concept. Dotted with symbols of the arcane and the Satanic, the deep woods of the hilltop park have for decades been rumored to be the home of a tree-dwelling, undead clan of otherworldly albinos.

1879 Standing Bear Trial Large parts of Fort Omaha, now the campus of Metro Community College, look like they did when Judge Elmer Dundy made the historic ruling here that Native Americans were persons within the meaning of the law. The campus is chocked full of historic military structures, including the General Crook House. The Fort Omaha Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Best Fictional Character From Omaha Rosemary Woodhouse Sure, the Wizard in a certain “There’s no place like home” cinema classic travelled in a hot air balloon emblazoned with the words “Omaha State Fair,” but our favorite hometown fictional character is the Vidal Sassoon-coifed Rosemary Woodhouse (Mia Farrow) from the bone-chilling Rosemary’s Baby (1968).

Best Time-Travel Day Trip Fort Atkinson A mere 20-minute trek from Omaha is Fort Atkinson, the first U.S. military post west of the Missouri River. Established in 1820 on the recommendation of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, the site played a pivotal role in the earliest days of the area’s fur trade, river travel, and Indian relations.

Best Spooky Place For a Midnight Tryst The Black Angel Standing guard at the edge of Fairview Cemetery in Council Bluffs is the stately Black Angel, the centerpiece of the Ruth Ann Dodge Memorial. The spectral figure on the site where the earliest burial was recorded in 1826 is the subject of countless urban legends.

Best (And Most Obscure) Location From a Film Dundee’s “Alexander Payne” Alley The alley behind 4949 Underwood Ave. in Dundee was featured prominently in two of Alexander Payne’s movies. Laura Dern huffed spray paint there in Citizen Ruth (1996) and Jack Nicholson dumped his unwanted clothing at a collection box on the same site in About Schmidt (2002).

Best Dumpster Dive Creighton University on Move-Out Day Some of those kids who can afford a $45,000-a-year education can also afford to load their rooms with some pretty nice stuff. And, those with disposable incomes can treat cool stuff as disposable. McGloin Hall is a tad more expensive to live in than the other dorms, so you might want to hit that one first.

Best Beardwatching Benson Business District The five-block stretch of Maple Street that runs through the trendy Benson business district offers dramatic viewing opportunities in the natural habitat of hirsute hipsters. These shaggy, inked up, nocturnal creatures stir mostly after midnight as they emerge to feed on indie music, craft beer, and food cart delicacies.

Best Omaha Reference in Music “Four young chiquitas in Omaha waitin’ for the band to return from the show.” This is not the “West Texas town of El Paso,” so we’re not sure why Grand Funk Railroad called our homegirls “chiquitas” in their brag-rock classic “We’re an American Band.” No matter. What matters is that Omaha is written into rock n’ roll legend as a city that knows how to party.

EDITORs’ PICKS Best Biking Trail Chalco Hills Recreation Area The 6-mile-long Chalco Hills Trail loops around Wehrspann Lake, which may not sound like much fun for those Omahans who have only seen Wehrspann from I-80. But when the rubber hits the path, the loop around the lake becomes a delightful ride that includes a wooded riparian lowland, a panoramic view from the Wehrspann dam, and, very often, pleasant lakeside breezes. Trail traffic is usually minimal. Sunsets viewed from the dam can be spectacular.

Best Place to Be Hit By a Fish Boyer Chute With the Missouri River now infested with the most annoying fish ever spawned, it’s very easy to get broadsided in your motorboat by a jumping 10-pound Asian Carp. For evolutionary reasons known only to Lucifer, this spastic mud-species freaks out when water in the vicinity is disturbed. At Boyer Chute, the local Asian Carp will actually jump at nonmotorized disturbances— even footsteps on a wood-plank viewing deck. Go watch the ducks. But be prepared to duck.

Best Stroll The Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge Omaha is increasingly becoming a walking city, but our favorite stroll is across the majestic Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge. Try “The Bob” at dusk. Or at dawn. Come to think of it, any hour of the day is great for traversing the span that looms above the swirling eddies of the mighty and muddy Missouri.

Best View of The Skyline Third Base Line of TD Ameritrade Park Omaha Sitting in the south-facing seats of TD Ameritrade, you realize why the poobahs situated the field the way they did. Omaha looks like a real metropolis from this prospect— the First National Bank building, the Woodman, etc…. What you’ll also see from here, though, are long balls dying in the prevailing south wind. Do you want an exciting College World Series or a nice view of Downtown? Pitchers are happy the latter was deemed most important.

Best Sunset Holy Family Shrine A panoramic vista of rolling hills and natural grasslands makes the glory-under-glass marvel that is the Holy Family Shrine the perfect spot from which to take in a serene, orange-hued sunset. The site is located west of the Highway 31 exit of Interstate 80.

Also, if you’re concerned about appearances, unlike the often-sullen pigeon feeders, duck feeders give off an active, happening vibe. Bring a cute dog while feeding the ducks if you’d like to attract the opposite sex.

Best Street Name John Galt Boulevard “Who is John Galt?” is the opening line of Ayn Rand’s seminal work, Atlas Shrugged. The name later became the inspiration for a street name when a real estate developer (and rabid Rand fan) was searching for an unusual moniker to adorn a street sign in Southwest Omaha near 108th between L and Q streets.

No, not the kind that requires binoculars. We’re talking about the crude, one-fingered salute that is so prominent at the ever-congested corner.

Best Place to Get Hit by a Speeding Crotch Rocket West Dodge Road With no stoplights and limited hiding spots for cops, West Dodge Road is the place to dodge hopped-up juvenile testosterone at its dumbest. Loud with an absurd weight to power ratio, these Yamahas, Suzukis, and Ducatis (okay, the Ducatis are kinda cool) are comas waiting to happen. The only hope on Omaha’s Autobahn is that, if there are injuries to be had, they are incurred by the guilty parties.

The heady and intoxicating work is so popular that traffic literally stops for what seems an eternity as locals throng to see this ongoing (endless?) public art installation.

Best Place to Get a Ticket Q Street East of 84th With the Ralston Arena bringing more traffic through the once sleepy bedroom community, many locals have discovered that Q Street is a handy backdoor route to the site. We’re all for law and order, and we don’t mean to rat the dedicated boys and girls in blue, but speeding tickets here fly like confetti on New Year’s Eve.

Best Motorcycle Ride Loess Hills Nebraska isn’t known for touring landscapes, but, across the river, a very pleasant ride can be had by weaving through the rolling hills above the Missouri River valley. You may want to begin your ride along the Loess Hills Scenic Byway down at beautiful Waubonsie State Park.

Best Place to Get a Mosquito Bite Brown Park This historic baseball field at 16th and U streets is the best place in Omaha to feel like you’re watching a turnof-the-century barnstormer game. (Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb both played here). Part of the reason it feels so oldtimey is the densely wooded ridge behind the bleachers. There is a reason that surely-toxic bug repellent is called “Deep Woods Off.” On a sweaty summer evening, the mosquitos very often hit for the cycle.

Best Sledding Hill Memorial Park Others are steeper. Quite a few are more hair-raising. Some even feature “Sled at Your Own Risk” postings. But none match the hills of Memorial Park, where generations of locals have sought frigidly al fresco, hotchocolate-sipping family fun.

Best Place to Skin a Knee Roberts Skate Park The half pipes and crazily convoluted curves of Roberts Skate Park promise thrills for riders and chills for their moms. “We just celebrated our 68th year in business and our focus will continue to be on getting out and telling our story so that we can get the next generation of great people into the travel industry. You may have seen news about our Travel Academy program, which we developed in partnership with Metropolitan Community College. It has been a huge success and we’re preparing to graduate our third class.” What changes do you see coming to vacation travel?

“In 2015 you’re going to see Travel and

Transport launching a new retail travel concept—a unique space where people can do more than just make travel plans, but can collaborate, create and connect in new and exciting ways. We have received tremendous feedback from the consumer testing we have done on the concept and we think this is going to be very popular in Omaha.” What has kept you at Travel and Transport?

“I’ve been with Travel and Transport for 21 years and I am not alone—many of our employees have been with Travel and Transport for 10, 20—even 30 years or more.
