It started 60 years ago. When Joan Sorensen opened a Fremont business dedicated to beautiful interiors with drapery, wall coverings, carpets, and textiles in August 1963, little did she know she was founding a legacy of offering custom home and office design solutions. Over the years, Interiors Joan and Associates opened Omaha and Lincoln locations and emerged as Nebraska’s leading interior design firm with ASID designers who provide outstanding customer service and awardwinning design.

The company is now into its third generation. Joan’s daughter, Diane Gernstein, purchased the company with designer Nancy Pesavento before granddaughter Kris Patton, an ASID designer in

clients in thousands of homes over the years with unique, and we work with them to figure out what they want.”

Reflecting on Joan’s enduring legacy, Patton said, “My grandmother was the design pioneer of her time. She blazed a trail. She’s always had ideas, and to this day she continues to learn and grow.”

That growth has included expanding beyond the design firm’s original parameters to offer residential and commercial design, custom furnishings, custom window treatments, unique artwork and

Patton credits the continual effort to improve with why the design team has been with the firm so long; in fact, some designers have worked for the company for over three decades, a true testament to the founder. “You see that in the wealth of talented designers in our Omaha and Lincoln locations. They are what made this company and continue to make it so special today. This is a complex business, but my grandmother says its’s pretty simple: just be the best you can be. Being the best is what’s made our business what it is today.”

MASTER TROUBLESHOOTER ONYX SHOP FOREMAN LEE BECK

very once in a while, a vehicle comes into the ONYX service center with a difficult issue that’s tough to diagnose. If nobody can figure out the issue, they don’t worry. That’s because they have a secret weapon: shop foreman Lee Beck.

Beck is well known throughout the Land Rover and Jaguar communities in the Omaha metropolitan area (and beyond) and has developed a hard-won reputation as the guy who can figure stuff out.

nard, a small town outside of Blair,” he said. Without chancing to work at the same place, they might never have met.

Beck enjoys working on Land Rovers and Jaguars and has watched the evolution of these vehicles over the years with awe. “The Jaguars have come a long way from when they started and are a reliable vehicle,” he said.

“I guess I like the challenge of getting to the answer and solving the problem,” Beck admitted with a modest shrug.

Fellow employee Troy Matthews hinted that Beck is somewhat of a legend when it comes to fixing cars. The two of them have worked together since 1986. Matthews said that despite Beck’s stellar reputation, he’s not a showboater. “He’s pretty much to himself unless you know him,” Matthews revealed. “He’ll open up if he knows you, but otherwise he’s pretty quiet.”

Beck largely credits his father for getting him started with a career in auto repair. “Basically, my father set me up my junior year of high school with a trade school, and I’ve never done anything else since then,” he said. “My dad pretty much chose that for me.” Beck isn’t sure why his dad steered him toward cars. His father was a federal meat inspector, so it wasn’t like he was carrying on a family tradition.

Reflecting further on his father’s influence, Beck shared, “He said, ‘This is when you’re starting school.’ I’m honestly not positive why I decided that was the route I should go, but I enjoyed it because I like working with my hands and learning how to fix things. It took a little bit to decide that’s the direction I wanted to go.”

When asked if he ever thought of changing careers, Beck confidently replied, “Not really, no.” He has always worked on cars and will continue to do so until he’s ready for retirement.

His automotive career also led him to Debbie, his wife of 39 years. They met when he briefly worked at the tire shop at Montgomery Ward in Fremont. “She was born in Omaha and grew up in Ken-

“The brand takes a little thinking,” he explained. “There’s no ‘This is what’s wrong.’ You have to analyze what is really going on. You have to start with actually seeing what the problem is and what it’s really doing. Then you have to analyze the circuits or components that are involved in it and then you slowly go down a tree of ‘this is where this is,’ and you keep going down the list. Does it stall, rattle, or make a noise when turning? First, you have to find out what it is really doing and then you go through the circuits and system to analyze where to go.”

The shop foreman continued, “The first Rover in ‘87 that came to North America had one computer, and now the ‘23 Rover has 45. So, the technology difference from when I started, you know basic vehicles, and now it’s all the different computers working and talking together—it is phenomenal.”

Because of his experience and position at ONYX, Beck frequently finds himself in the role of mentor to younger techs. “It can be challenging, but yeah, I enjoy it,” he said of “helping new techs feel empowered to troubleshoot on their own” before consulting with him.

And that can be tough, since all the new techs know that if anyone can figure out what’s wrong with a Land Rover or Jaguar, it’s Lee Beck.

When not troubleshooting, Beck spends his free time with his wife, their children, and grandchildren. As for retirement? Beck has no immediate plans and wonders if retirement is actually for him. “I don’t know yet, I haven’t decided,” he said when asked about plans post ONYX. “I’m almost kind of afraid of retirement. I work five days a week, 12-to 14-hour days. I was off for a week when I had my gallbladder out, and it was tough.”

Beck simply must keep his hands and mind busy, which makes Onyx a good fit for him. He enjoys his work, and the staff appreciates having someone with his level of expertise onsite.

LIVE WITH STYLE IN SPAREPARTS THE ONYX BOUTIQUE

CL IENT BENEFIT
Story by Holly McAtee // Photography by Bill Sitzmann

ustomers take pride when they purchase their luxury vehicle from ONYX Automotive. The dealership is located within Omaha’s preeminent development, Heartwood Preserve. The showroom is clean, sleek, and modern—not loud and chaotic like other dealers. The sales staff is helpful and informative and listens to what people want and need in a new car. From the initial test drive to steering that new BMW, Jaguar, Land Rover, or Mini off the lot, it’s an all-around first-class experience.

For those reasons, it made sense that when customers experienced the ONYX difference, they also showed interest in ONYX apparel and accessories.

Drew Friesen, ONYX Automotive general manager, said, “When you are making a large purchase of a luxury brand, people identify with that, so we wanted to mesh the Onyx brand for them and create that experience as a thank you. We give a bottle of wine to every customer who buys a car. They also get some nice attire. You feel good when you leave here.”

While the custom California cabernet in a hand-etched bottle with each vehicle purchase is a popular customer perk, not everyone is an oenophile. Clients can alternatively receive up to $100 of apparel or items from SPAREPARTS, the ONYX boutique, which opened in spring 2022.

The initiative was an instant hit. Clients were pleased that they had purchased their cars at ONYX, and they wanted to display their discernment with style. Friesen said at first, ONYX drivers purchased t-shirts. Then they requested sweatshirts. The boutique has now expanded to offer shirts, jackets, hats, water bottles, and mugs. The most popular items include hats and water bottles. Every season a new collection arrives, and SPAREPARTS boutiques are now located in all three ONYX showrooms. This summer there will be new automotive brandspecific lines offered in the boutiques.

The ONYX clothing collection, which is made from soft, comfortable fabrics, is another favorite.

“When we created our apparel line, we picked a high-quality vendor and were

very selective about the look, fit, and feel of the items,” Friesen said.

Client advisor Morgan Wojtalewicz describes the boutique items as simple, stylish designs. “It is a nice little perk for our clientele,” she said. “Customers light up when they see the apparel selection we offer. Everyone likes to get something extra.”

The clothing line includes jackets, hoodies, and tees in charcoal gray, heather gray, white, or black, or a gray/black camouflage emblazoned with the ONYX logo. The hats are available in traditional trucker styles, a leather patch trucker, cable knit caps with fur pompoms, and a slouch beanie. Wotjalewicz shared that women gravitate toward the sweatshirts because they are so soft. Men love the unique designs of the hats. The trucker styles, Friesen revealed, are especially popular.

The accessories are attracting attention outside the dealership. Strangers often stop ONYX clients to inquire where they purchased their apparel.

“It’s good branding and recognition. When I go out, it’s a conversation piece,” said Christi Copeland, BMW sales manager. “Our customers have been very pleased with the boutique items. The hats, cups, and mugs have been a great hit. They like getting a special thank you for their business.”

Meg Reckling, aftermarket sales manager, said customers love the branding of the custom ONYX line. “People see it, and they know that you bought your car at an ONYX.”

“IT’S USUALLY THE ONLY MINI IN THE PARKING LOT. PEOPLE SAY, ‘THAT IS SUCH A COOL CAR! IT’S FUN TO DRIVE.” BRANDI BOYKIN

MINI IMPRESSIONS BRANDI BOYKIN’S ODE TO GREAT BRITAIN

CLIE NT SPOTLIGHT
Story by Kara Schweiss // Photography by Bill Sitzmann

When hardworking marketing professional Brandi Boykin decided to reward herself with a new vehicle, she chose a 2023 MINI Cooper Countryman S knowing full well it would get noticed. So, while she was at it, she decided to go for one of the brightest color options available: island blue.

“Blue is my favorite color, and it stands out, so I thought, ‘I might as well,’” Boykin said, adding that her vehicle instantly communicates several things. “It says I have a lot of pride, that I like British classics, and that I’m fun.”

One playful design detail Boykin especially likes is a taillight option—standard in the United Kingdom but an add-on in the United States—a nod to the MINI’s U.K. origins; the brand was originally produced by the British Motor Corporation, although it is owned by BMW today. Boykin has a special connection to the U.K., which happens to be where she attended college.

“When you brake, the taillights pop out and signify a Union Jack. I love that feature. I used to live in London,” she said. “It’s only in newer models; the older MINIs don’t have that.”

The MINI Countryman is MINI’s largest and roomiest model, classified as a compact crossover SUV. It comfortably seats five in a rich standard interior that also provides generous cargo space. Roof rails are standard for additional cargo flexibility. The MINI Countryman is still a relatively small vehicle; however, it nevertheless boasts a powerful engine and fast acceleration, plus a full complement of safety features from an advanced airbag system to a rearview camera and park-distance control sensors.

Boykin said she appreciates that her MINI is as practical as it is visually appealing, with its all-wheel drive especially useful in the winter or in heavy rain.

“Because I live in Nebraska, the weather is temperamental,” Boykin said. “The ALL4 feature helps out with the rain, ice, and snow when it’s cold here.”

And on the nicer days? “I can open my sunroof when it’s warm outside,” she said.

Boykin said she also enjoys the Sport Mode feature on her MINI, which adjusts the throttle response, transmission shift points, suspension, and steering as it turns off traction control for a “sporti-

er” experience driving the vehicle. Or as Boykin puts it, “A fun part of my MINI is the Sport Mode.”

MINIs are known for being remarkably fuel-efficient, and that can be maximized, Boykin said. “If I want to save on fuel, I can choose the eco mode,” she explained. Eco mode changes the vehicle’s throttle response to optimize fuel consumption and even displays eco tips on the MINI’s dash screen.

The MINI is a good fit for her lifestyle and budding career, Boykin said, whether she’s commuting, running personal errands, driving around town for work activities, or traveling.

“I can get anywhere quickly and easily park anywhere if I’m at an event or if I need to pick up print promotions or signage,” Boykin said, adding that whether the trip is long or short, she enjoys her vehicle’s comfortable interior and highquality sound system.

Plus, the esteemed MINI brand conveys success, she said. “I do some acting and modeling on the side, so it helps make a great first impression when I’m walking into a shoot or an audition.”

She notices other MINIs now more than ever. But even before Boykin became an owner, she was fond of the brand and noted that MINI has increased in popularity in the US over time.

“When I was living here in high school, there were no MINIs,” she said. “When I came back from college, they were everywhere.”

Nevertheless, Boykin finds that people still take immediate notice of her standout Countryman.

“It’s usually the only MINI in the parking lot. People say, ‘That is such a cool car!’” she said. And they’ll get no argument from her. “It’s fun to drive.”

Boykin’s MINI Cooper Countryman was her first vehicle purchase from ONYX, and she said she’d heartily recommend the dealership to other buyers, citing the personable staff and outstanding customer service.

“The employees there are best in class and they always want to make sure you’re more than okay before you leave,” she said.

THE BIG EASY MEETS THE BIG O

HERBE SAINTE SERVES UP CLASSIC NOLA CRAFT COCKTAILS AND CUISINE

DINING
Story by Kim Carpenter // Photography by Bill Sitzmann

s there anything quite as refreshing as sipping a Pimm’s Cup on a hot summer day? The refreshing blend of Pimm’s No. 1, gin, brandy, lemon juice, and ginger ale—all garnished with a slivered slice of cucumber—was made famous at the the Napoleon House during the 1940s and is one of New Orleans’ most famous cocktails. The climate demands a beverage that can take the edge off the omnipresent heat.

But when temperatures climb in Omaha, you don’t have to travel to New Orleans, Louisiana—or NOLA—to order a Pimm’s Cup—you can just saunter into Herbe Sainte in Aksarben Village for a small taste of the Big Easy.

And what an authentic taste it is!

The establishment, which opened in 2016, started primarily as a cocktail bar inspired by the French Quarter; an assortment of appetizers was also available. The Cajun/Creole cooking was so popular, though, that the offerings soon expanded to a full menu that today includes appetizers, soups, salads, main courses, and desserts.

The challenge? A “submarine” galley kitchen with limited space and ventilation. The solution? No frozen foods that could be quickly fried. Instead, everything would be made fresh, entirely, painstakingly, and skillfully from scratch.

The payoff is extraordinary: during our visit in May, my dining companion and I each experienced dishes packed full of rich flavor and just the right levels of spice.

For starters, we opted for the Cajun crab cakes and a bowl of gumbo. The former, made from lump crab and topped with a drizzle of cold, creamy remoulade, was flaky and moist and accented with a hint of celery, onion, and a subtle New Orleans spice blend. The gumbo, a true NOLA nod if ever there was one, contained the vaunted Creole “holy trinity” of celery, bell peppers, and onions at its base. The meaty mélange of pecan shoulder bacon, Andouille sausage, and chicken achieved a perfect balance and nuanced flavor profile, making for a hearty bowl indeed.

For the main courses, we went full NOLA and opted for the étouffée and jambalaya. Both, which arrived steaming hot from the kitchen, remained true to their southern roots, and happily, neither was dulled down for delicate Midwestern palates. This was authentic, traditional fare, one that paid dutiful and faithful homage to regional Cajun and Creole cuisine.

The velvety étouffée was Creole in origin— that is, made with crawfish. The seafood flavor lightly but thoroughly permeated the dish, which was made slightly nutty from the blond roux, and served over a generous helping of white rice. The heat, thanks to a splash of Louisiana hot sauce, was just right and accented and enhanced, rather than overrode, the seafood. Étouffée is French for smothered, and the dish gets its name from its technique: the kitchen simmers the shellfish in a roux with herbs and spices until it is fully cooked and the sauce has thickened—hence the smooth texture.

More crawfish flavor came through in the jambalaya, this time blackened and accompanied by smoky, juicy Andouille sausage. Made with bell peppers, onions, and a NOLA spice blend, this generously filled bowl is a classic Big Easy comfort food for good reason. The savory dish with its layered, complex flavors was more Creole than Cajun—i.e., more red than brown. The cayenne pepper punctuated the dish and made for just the right hit of piquant spice. It’s a stick-to-your ribs kind of dish, a soul food that’s good for mind and spirit.

For dessert, we shared the king cake bread pudding, a Mardi Gras tradition and New Orleans sugary staple. The extra-generous portion of custard-soaked baguette more than lived up to its name. Glazed with pecan brown sugar and nestled on a swirl of crème Anglaise, the piping hot cake was rich, moist, and hit just the right level of sweetness.

But of course, if you’re visiting Herbe Sainte, you also have to pay attention to its origins—that is, to the impeccably and often intricately concocted craft cocktails. Whereas most restaurants hit a 70% to 30% food-to-drink ratio, Herbe Sainte is closer to an even split. For good reason. Like the dishes made from scratch,

the cocktails, too, are created from syrups and other ingredients made onsite. (Where else in town are you likely to get a drink crafted from house-made guajillo-serrano syrup?) The establishment offers a stable of eight regular cocktails, with many of them, like the Vieux Carré, known as Big Easy staples. A rotating roster of another eight seasonal cocktails—original recipes devised by staff— as well as barrel-aged and frozen cocktails amplify the generous drink menu as do seasonal mocktails.

Pours are generous, and the drinks are accordingly boozy. In addition to the refreshing Pimm’s Cup, we opted for the Hurricane, an eye-opening blend of three rums (most places make it with just two), passion fruit, lime juice, grenadine, and simple syrup. Served in the classic curvy glass (which resembles an old-fashioned hurricane lamp), the drink was, by sips and swallows, both tart and sweet—and very satisfying.

The evening was, from start to finish, as enjoyable as they come, complete with friendly, prompt, solicitous service in a bright, convivial atmosphere. The ride home consisted of revisiting the meal and discussing the details of both food and drink, a rarity for us when leaving a restaurant. Herbe Sainte’s menu was a revelation of Cajun-Creole cuisine and craft cocktails, ones we will soon revisit to sample different offerings and harken back to already established favorites. After all, we haven’t even cracked the brunch menu yet.

NEBRASKA BALLOON & WINE FESTIVAL IS A SUMMER MAIN EVENT

E NTERTAINMENT

ew sites are as majestic as a Nebraska sunset. Pair that with the glow of over a dozen hot air balloons ascending in unison, and you have one of the most breathtaking skylines of summer. Add wine, beer, food, and family activities, and it becomes one of the most memorable events of the season. That’s thanks to the Nebraska Balloon & Wine Festival, happening this year at Elkhorn’s Ta-Ha-Zouka Park on August 18 and 19.

The annual affair, held by Mid-America Expositions and now entering its 17th year, attracts thousands of hot air balloon and wine enthusiasts for a reason. Aside from the main attractions in the festival title, the popular event offerings include skydivers, paragliders, a KidZone with pony rides, inflatables, bungee jump bouncing, face painting, and other family-friendly activities, as well as live music that includes the island, rock, funk, and reggae band the Fishheads, the rhythm and blues group Front Ro, and High Heel, a band that covers everything from classic rock to country.

ONYX Automotive general manager

Scott Sutton is proud of the company’s sponsorship of the festival, which is in its third year of involvement, and sees it as an opportunity to showcase just what ONYX delivers.

Noting that the festival is a natural fit for the company, he explained that wine is also something ONYX customers love and appreciate. “The demographic works well with our clients and the interests we see in our dealerships,” he said. “It’s about lifestyle, and the festival appeals to our existing customer base. One of the things that we enjoy doing is to present our own wine, a handcrafted California cabernet branded for us in an etched bottle, to new car owners. It’s a little more elegant and something special for our clients. It’s a nice, little memento—people send us photos enjoying their bottles and raising a toast.”

Wine, of course, is the second anchor of the weekend’s festivities. Chardonnay, pinot noir, cabernet, sauvignon blanc, pinot grigio, merlot, and rosé, predominantly from Nebraska and Iowa, are all showcased as well as more offerings from other parts of the country. Regional wine producers include vineyards like Niobrara Valley, Prairie Creek, Glacial Till, Broken Arrow Cellars, Rich Harvest, James Arthur, Nissen Wine, Soaring Wings, and Little Swan Lake. Big names, too, enter the weekend with Clos du Bois and Lamarca Prosecco featured on the tasting roster.

Mike Mancuso, event manager and president of Mid-America Expositions, said the goal behind founding the festival was simple. “We wanted to put together an event to showcase local wines. When we started, there were about seven wineries in Nebraska. Now, here we are 17 years later, and there are more than 20. It just continues to grow.”

Mancuso added the number is even higher when adding wines from Iowa, South Dakota, and other parts of the country. “Usually, you can taste wines from over 60 wineries. It’s one of the largest wine festivals in the state. It’s perfect for young wine drinkers just getting started to more experienced oenophiles. And there is also beer and other beverages for those who don’t drink wine.”

air balloons.” To create the glow, the pilots ignite their burners simultaneously, which makes the balloons light up against the inky black skies and the reflection of the Lawrence Youngman Lake. The pilots then make the balloons “dance” by igniting the burners, with the band firing up the stage to prep for the hot air balloons’ ascension.

Mancuso said ONYX lends a special experience to the event. “As a luxury car dealership, they’re a great fit for wine drinkers. You’re really close to the field in the ONYX VIP area. Weather permitting, you can get really close and talk to the pilots.”

The event organizer is looking forward to seeing the crowds turn out this year. “It’s just a really neat experience,” Mancuso said. “When you see those balloons with their colorful designs inflated, they’re so huge. It’s almost romantic.”

Ticket prices start at $17, which includes admission for one person, a souvenir wine glass, and five wine-tasting tickets, and go up to $50 for VIP packages, which cover admission for two people, souvenir wine glasses, 10 tasting tickets, and access to the ONYX Automotive VIP area. Helicopter rides, reserved tables, and food and wine experiences with Carrabba’s Italian Grill, Outback Steakhouse, and WineStyles are also on offer throughout the weekend.

BMW XM A WHOLE NEW CHAPTER

FEATURE
Story by Dwain Hebda // Photography Courtesy of Onyx Automotive

In the annals of automotive history, there are few that can rival BMW’s mastery of the car maker’s art. For generations, the German legend has set the standard in engineering, design, comfort, and technology, to say nothing of seamlessly melding form and function into an unparalleled driving experience.

The price for such consistent innovation is high; BMW resides in an elite class where having to constantly improve and surpass the triumphs of the past is a standard, yet daunting, expectation. But as the jaw-dropping XM proves, the company is more than up to the challenge of amazing and delighting even the most discriminating enthusiasts.

“This vehicle is a statement piece. It’s bold, it stands out,” said Daniel Schwartz, client adviser with ONYX Automotive. “The client that drives this wants to be seen, wants to be a little bit different, doesn’t want to have the same vehicle as everyone else. And the XM really emphasizes that point very well.”

The revolutionary elements of the XM high-performance SUV are here for all to see—the hybrid electric power plant, the radical and aggressive body styling, and the signature illuminated kidney grille. There’s more here, however, than meets the eye. Interfusing raw power and futuristic technology without sacrificing luxury and comfort is no small feat, but the XM pulls it off beautifully and in so doing signals a radical new shift in the automotive universe.

“The cool thing about this car is it’s the first car since the ‘70s where the M Division, which is the motor sports division of BMW, has gotten to design it from the ground up,” Schwartz said. “Everything from the drivetrain to the body to the transmission, therefore, is a true M car. At the same time, its unlike anything BMW has ever produced.”

Performance has always come first with BMW, and the XM is no exception. Under the hood lurks a 4.4-liter BMW M TwinPower Turbo V-8 engine paired with a high-performance electric motor. The engine delivers 644 maximum horsepower and 590 ft-lbs of torque. It goes from 0 to 60 mph in a scant 4.2 seconds, yet remains remarkably quick enough to out-maneuver the few things it can’t outrun.

15
“BMW HAS SHOWN IT WILL SPEND THE MONEY AND THE TIME AND THE EFFORT TO DEVELOP SOMETHING NEW AND SOMETHING UNIQUE. AND THE XM IS DEFINITELY ALL OF THAT AND MORE.” DANIEL SCHWARTZ

The electric motor is particularly impressive. Even with the performance demands and all the onboard hardware to support, it still delivers up to 30 miles on pure electric juice.

“They’ve really married the hybrid drivetrain system with the big V8 4x4 liter very, very well,” said Schwartz, who estimated bone-dry-to-full-bars charging time at about three hours. “It’s 644 horsepower, so it gives you the boost you need. And if you don’t want the exhaust for some reason, you can run on pure electric mode. It’s a perfect blend of both worlds.”

Channeling power with precision is another testament to BMW’s engineering chops, and the XM doesn’t disappoint thanks to standard Adaptive M Suspension Professional, an M Sport Differential, and the intelligent all-wheel-drive power of M xDrive.

You don’t house that much good stuff in a plain brown wrapper, and the mad geniuses behind the XM have come up with external styling radical enough to match its guts. While much of the discussion online and in car magazines has focused on the menacing new face, there are plenty of other touches here—from the color scheme to the huge 23-inch wheels to the first-ever vertical quad exhaust—that make it impossible for XM owners to maintain a low profile.

The artistry continues in the cabin, which provides a feast for the senses of both driver and passengers, starting with the sprawling high-resolution curved dashboard display. The panoramic screen stretches across two-thirds of the dash, allowing easy identification of digital gauges and infotainment controls. In engineering the groundbreaking display, designers crafted a critical piece of technology that looks like art and functions like the command center it is. Powered by iDrive 8 Operating System, perks like Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ compatibility come standard.

“The cool thing with BMW is their mindset is very driver-centered,” Schwartz said. “As you sit in the driver’s seat, everything is centered around you. The screens are angled more towards your field of vision. They’re set in a way where you don’t have to look down as far as you do with some other makes and models.”

FEATURE

Other next-level technological amenities include an available Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System with 20 speakers providing 1,475 watts of power and the standard Parking Assistant Plus and Active Driving Assistant Professional that provides smart features like frontal collision warning, active blind spot detection, lane departure warning, and speed limit information. You can even do a status check of the vehicle from anywhere, thanks to the My BMW app.

Fitting that much technology into a confined space could have resulted in a cold, robotic interior, but such is not the case with the XM. BMW balances the environment with the warmth of sumptuous leather and a spectacularly sculptured ceiling reflecting soothing ambient fiberoptic lighting.

As much as the XM package amazes, the ultra-exclusive Label Red model blows the mind, thanks to 748 horses and 738 ftlbs of torque that clocks 0-60 mph in less than four seconds, the most unapologetically powerful M model ever built.

Schwartz predicts that for all the wowfactor punch of the current bad boys of the M Class, this is only the beginning. And while it’s hard to imagine what the company could do to top such a vehicle, that’s what they said before the XM.

“This shows that BMW’s mindset is open to different market segments and to expanding, where a lot of automotive manufacturers, especially post-COVID, have been trying to focus in on what their market share is and just keep making vehicles like they always have,” he said.

“BMW has shown it will spend the money and the time and the effort to develop something new and something unique. And the XM is definitely all of that and more.”

PRESTIGIOUS ACCOLADES

hen OXYX Automotive launched in January 2020, the concept was to showcase four premium automotive brands and bring in the best professionals in the area with expertise in luxury automobiles sales and service. Many satisfied customers can attest that the ONYX model has been a success, but the company has also received prestigious industry recognition as a two-time BMW of North America Center of Excellence Award winner and an inaugural and repeat winner of MINI USA’s Golden Bulldog Award.

In March, BMW of North America announced its annual Center of Excellence (COE) award winners for 2023, recognizing ONYX’s BMW of Omaha as one of only 32 BMW dealers—less than 10% of the total—across the country that deliver “exceptional results in sales, service, and customer experience.” This award is the highest honor a BMW dealer can receive, reflecting both overall customer satisfaction and operational performance. BMW of Omaha also received the honor in 2022, making it a back-to-back winner. It has also has the distinction of being the only winner in the state of Nebraska.

Six key performance indicators were used to measure and compare all BMW centers in the country. Sales and aftersales factors were considered, along with customer satisfaction surveys. According to BMW of North America, winners outperformed their peers across these categories both years.

“As the primary point of contact with customers, our dealers play a critical role in representing our brand and shaping the

Mackensen, BMW of North America’s president and CEO. “On behalf of our entire team, I’d like to congratulate this year’s winners and thank them for their tireless efforts, leadership, and commitment to excellence.”

BMW of North America, LLC has been present in the United States since 1975. The BMW Group sales organization is represented in the US through networks including 350 BMW passenger car and BMW Sports Activity Vehicle centers, as well as more than 140 BMW motorcycle retailers.

“It’s a great honor to be named a BMW North America Center of Excellence,” said BMW of Omaha General Manager Drew Friesen. “BMW is an outstanding brand that we strongly believe in. We believe that purchasing an automobile should be a world-class experience. The Center of Excellence is a reflection of our deep commitment at ONYX to ensure a truly outstanding visit—every time—for every customer.”

Also in March, MINI USA, a division of BMW of North America, announced its second annual Golden Bulldog Award winners. ONYX’s MINI of Omaha was recognized as one of only 11 of MINI USA’s top-performing MINI dealers across the U.S. Like BMW’s COE designation, the Golden Bulldog Award represents a dealer’s exceptional results in sales, service, and customer experience. Not only did MINI of Omaha receive the award in 2023, it was also an award winner in 2022, the year the Golden Bulldog was introduced. MINI of Omaha was the only 2022 and 2023 winner in the state of Nebraska.

The award name is inspired by the bulldog stance and demeanor associated with the modern MINI. For years, MINI’s iconic mascot has been the English bulldog, which has appeared in advertising and even as a plush toy. Not only are the MINI and English bulldog both British, they also share a wide stance and facial profile along with tenacity in a small package.

“Our dealers play a vital role as the primary customer touchpoint in representing our brand with a compelling and uniquely ‘MINI’ customer experience,” said Mike Peyton, vice president for MINI of the Americas. “I, along with the entire MINI team, congratulate this year’s Golden Bulldog winners for their outstanding results and their ongoing dedication, hard work, and commitment to MINI.”

MINI’s 104 United States dealers were measured on the same six sales and after-sales key performance indicators, including customer satisfaction surveys, as their BMW COE counterparts. Like the other winners, MINI of Omaha outperformed its peers across these categories throughout both 2021 and 2022. Only about 10% of American MINI dealers have earned the Golden Bulldog Award in their first two years.

MINI is an independent brand of the BMW Group. In the United States, MINI USA operates as a business unit of BMW of North America. The authorized MINI USA dealer organization is represented by a network of 104 MINI full passenger car sales and service dealers located throughout the US MINI USA began selling vehicles in the US in 2002 with the introduction of the MINI Cooper and MINI Cooper S Hardtops. Since then, the MINI Brand in the US has grown to encompass a model range of five unique vehicles.

“The MINI Golden Bulldog is a new award, and we are pleased to have received it from MINI USA two years in a row including in its inaugural year,” Friesen said. “MINI is a deeply respected brand and to win the Golden Bulldog Award means that we are achieving our important goal of delivering a world-class experience to our customers.”

othing is quite as relaxing as a day at the lake. Fishing, boating, hiking, off-roading, or just plain lounging on a dock in the sunshine—spending time lakeside is a way to decompress, destress, and chill during summer. Whether you’re looking at a weekend getaway or a longer stay, these five lakes provide the back-to-nature experiences that define this time of year. Best part? They’re all within easy driving distance, so pack up your Onyx vehicle—and don’t forget the sunscreen.

LAKE MCCONAUGHY

Affectionately known as “Big Mac” or more simply “Lake Mac,” this lake is as mighty as they come. At 30,000 surface acres, Lake McConaughy is Nebraska’s largest reservoir. Just eight miles northeast of Ogallala, there is plenty to do. Water recreation runs the gamut and includes boating, water skiing, jet skiing, tubing, scuba diving, parasailing, paddle boarding, wind surfing, and, of course, swimming. (The white sand beaches make dipping your toes in particularly popular.) Boating options abound. You can bring your own, with boat ramps available around the lake, or rent a watercraft from a local outfitter.

If getting wet isn’t your thing, there’s more to enjoy in the great outdoors such as camping, hiking, stargazing, birdwatching, hunting, and fishing and angling. Walleye, catfish, Northern pike, wiper, smallmouth bass, and white bass, among other game species, are just waiting for the right lure or fly. Fishcleaning stations are open at Martin Bay, Otter Creek, and Cedar View. Note that camping is by reservation only during peak times, which run May 20 through September 10. Reservations can be made up to 180 days in advance. Numerous cabin rentals are also on offer on and around this vast lake.

LEWIS AND CLARK LAKE

Just behind Lake Mac is Lewis and Clark Lake, Nebraska’s second largest reservoir. The body of water has a venerable history. Situated between the state’s northeast border with South Dakota, the lake is named for the Lewis and Clark Expedition, which stopped nearby during its exploration of the Louisiana Purchase territories. The lake boasts scenic panoramas perfect for hunting, bird watching, cycling, horseback riding, and hiking. Fishing is a major draw with species like large-and smallmouth bass, crappie, sauger, walleye, catfish, and bluegill, which can all be found around the jetties at the Weigand-Burbach area, which improves and promotes habitat and fishing opportunities and has a fishcleaning station.

With access to the Missouri River, boating is a main draw. Speedboats, sailboats, and personal watercraft are allowed with fuel for sale at the Weigand Marina. Both seasonal and daily rental docs are options and can be reserved in advance. Camping is also a consistently favorite pastime at the lake with over 150 campsites offering electricity and another 100 listed as basic sites. (Camping is allowed throughout the year, but electricity and modern showers and bathroom facilities are available April through October, depending on weather conditions.) If you’d prefer not to pitch a tent, 10 fully equipped two-bedroom cabins, which sleep seven people, are also available for $160 a night.

TUTTLE CREEK LAKE

This quaint name belies a reservoir that totals some 5,000 hectares. That’s over 12,000 acres of water, plus 100 miles of pristine wooded shoreline. Situated along the Big Blue River in northeastern Kansas’s beautiful Flint Hills, this lake was originally intended for flood control during the mid-20th century, but it’s since emerged as a popular area for outdoor recreation. It boasts 11 parks: four managed by the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, six by the Corps of Engineers, and one by Pottawatomie County.

N

A whopping 16,000 acres of land ring the lake and offer overnight camping pads, modern log cabins, picnic shelters, a volleyball court, disc golf, utility hookups, beaches, boat ramps, and a full-service marina. Visitors will also find nature, hiking, equestrian, and off-road vehicle trails along with a shooting range. The land is teeming with wildlife and offers premier hunting opportunities, which include pheasant, white-tailed deer, quail, waterfowl, and turkey. Fishing includes the chance to catch crappie, catfish, and white bass, among other species.

LAKE OF THE OZARKS

One of the most popular lake destinations in the entire Midwest, Lake of the Ozarks was famous long before the acclaimed Netflix series Ozark. Located in central Missouri, this lake offers sleeping rough or luxury resort living—and everything in between. Recreation possibilities are practically endless from adventurous outdoor pursuits like boating, fishing, and hiking to more refined escapes like fine dining, shopping, and spa visits. There are even helicopter and airplane tours. So much is possible because of the sheer size; at a mammoth 54,000 surface acres with 1,150 miles of shoreline, it’s one of the largest manmade lakes on the globe.

Not surprisingly, this outdoor attraction includes not one but two state parks: the Lake of the Ozarks State Park and the Ha Ha Tonka State Park. (The former is home to the infamous Party Cove, which The New York Times labeled the “oldest established permanent floating bacchanal in the country” in 2005. Events are an enormous tourist draw. Water lovers congregate on rafts and tubes and boats link up to one another while live music plays during the annual AquaPolooza, scheduled July 15 this year. On August 19, the “Shootout,” or “the largest unsanctioned boat race in the US, and maybe the world” held every year takes place. The powerboat race surges over a three-mile course and benefits various charities. These events are just the beginning of what visitors can indulge in at this lake destination.

LAKE OKOBOJI

Generations have flocked to this beloved glacier-carved, spring-fed lake, technically West Lake Okoboji, known for its clean, clear blue water. The crowning centerpiece of Iowa’s Great Lakes chain, this body of water totals 3,850 acres, spans two miles across, and plummets 136 feet at its deepest. Outdoor recreation is for all ages: pickleball, yoga, disc golf, biking, hiking, golf, beach volleyball, kayaking, paddle boarding, wake boarding, sailing, and much more. Arnolds Park Amusement Park, situated on the lakeshore, also provides old-fashioned family fun with the wooden Legend Roller Coaster and the Queen II lake excursion boat.

For those who want to spend their days on the water, the Okoboji Boat Works Fleet in the Marina District in Smith’s Bay offers daily or seasonal boat slip rentals, an on-water gas dock, boat and watersports rentals, and fishing licenses and supplies. Parks and campsites are also perfect places for land-based activities. Multiple beaches provide plenty of sand ideal for whiling away a sunny day and making summertime memories.
