Gretna started shortly after the Burlington Railroad built a short line between Omaha and Ashland in the summer of 1886.

The name suggests Scotland’s Gretna Green, the ancestral county of some of the earliest settlers.

GOLF

Eagle Hills Golf Course This 18-hole complex comprises two 9-hole layouts: The Links and The Meadows. The Links is an executive course built on a hillside and surrounding flatland. The Meadows is a par-3 course designed like The Links except without the uphill or downhill lies. 501 Eagle Hills Drive, Papillion 402-592-7788 • www.eaglehills.org

Fontenelle Hills Golf Club Carved into the hillsides of the Fontenelle Hills area, this short, aesthetic course challenges golfers’ finesse with wooded, narrow fairways—many of which are ringed by sharp hillside drops. 1102 Country Club Court, Bellevue 402-292-2500

Hidden Valley Driving Range Conveniently located just south of Nebraska Highway 370, the lighted range features mat and grass tees, as well as a practice putting green. 2910 Gilmore Road, Bellevue 402-291-9456

La Vista Falls Golf Course This fine executive course surrounds a bowl-shaped acreage and features a modern design with raised tees, mostly level fairways, and midsize greens. Most golfers will find this course tricky yet enjoyable. 8305 Park View Boulevard, La Vista 402-339-9147 • www.ci.la-vista.ne.us

Papio Greens Golf Course Once Nebraska’s only public 18-hole, par-3 course, Papio Greens is now privately managed by Evergreen Alliance Golf Ltd. Still open to the public, Papio Greens offers a water-engulfed driving range, league play, PGA instructors, junior golf programs, and a full-featured clubhouse. 11050 South 66th Street, Papillion 402-331-4621 • www.papiogreens.com

Platteview Country Club This 18-hole course presents a rewarding challenge via rolling terrain and well-placed water hazards. It’s a welcome retreat for any golfer. Platteview Road, Bellevue 402-291-5927 • www.platteviewcc.com

Tara Hills Golf Course This city-owned course was revamped in the mid-1990s to include a back 9 and an expanded clubhouse. The manicured layout is short but challenging. 1410 Western Hills Drive, Papillion 402-592-7550 • tarahills.org

Tiburon Golf Club Tiburon, meaning “shark” in Spanish, packs a vicious bite if one’s not careful. The 27-hole complex is long, open, and contoured with well-placed fairway bunkers lying in wait for off-line tee shots. 10302 South 168th Street, Omaha 402-895-2688 • www.tiburongolf.com
